Foodies can get a taste of the real thing at a new SoFlo hot spot. No horse or cowboy hat needed here.

When it comes to serving up real Central Texas barbecue, B&D Trap in Fort Lauderdale isn’t just blowing smoke.

Orelle Young: “We are the first authentic Texas barbecue restaurant here in Fort Lauderdale.”

When you get here, get ready for a very tasty ride.

Orelle Young: “B&D Trap barbecue is a journey that we’d like to invite our guests on. We would like to introduce authentic Texas barbecue to South Florida.”

The dishes served up have been around for a long time.

Orelle Young: “I’d say it’s over a century in the making. You had a lot of German immigrants and families that came and opened up grocery stores and meat markets. They had to figure out something to do with their meats, so they did what they knew best. They smoke their meats.”

One trap you won’t fall into is getting your food slathered in sauce. That’s a no-no at B&D.

Orelle Young: “We eat meat because we enjoy the flavor of meat. We don’t want sauce for the same reason we don’t use hickory or mesquite: super strong, overpowering. We don’t want to cover anything up. We’re not masking anything. We want you to enjoy the meat for what it is.”

Their cooking technique will definitely rub you the right way.

Orelle Young: “We have special dry rubs. I call them our signature dry rubs. I have a special dry rub for each type of meat.”

Sauce-heads, you are not excluded. There’s some of your favorite stuff on the sandwiches. The small but mighty menu features two beers and sides like mac and cheese.

If you’re looking for ribs, get ready for a plateful of plenty.

Orelle Young: “But we’re a Texas barbecue, we had to go full-size spare ribs. We want some super meaty ribs, you’re looking at some center cuts that, I guess, sometimes weigh a third to a half-pound each. Yeah, that’s what we’re looking for: large and in-charge ribs.”

B&D is part of the revitalization of Fort Lauderdale’s Sistrunk Boulevard. It sounds like they were made for the neighborhood.

Orelle Young: “There’s parties and people smoking and grilling meats down the block that way. The same thing that way, the culture’s already here. Now we have a place for people to do less work and come and enjoy the food.”

Laura Cugno: “Absolutely amazing! The brisket melted in the mouth, and this spot is pretty dope.”

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-386/ Sat, 13 Apr 2024 01:42:45 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1433296 The weekend’s coming up, and if you’ve got the time, we’ve got the movies. The five films on hand are all different and all extremely watchable … which should come as no surprise, because that’s how we roll on Showtime.

Kirsten Dunst (as Lee): “Every time I survived a war zone, I thought I was sending a warning home: ‘Don’t do this.’ But here we are.”

Kirsten Dunst is a photojournalist who finds herself in the middle of a second American “Civil War.” The film is a frightening look at our country if we can’t resolve our differences.

Jay Hernandez (as JB Peña): “Now, these teams, they’ve had access to a lot of things. You boys haven’t, but the best golfer isn’t the one with the fanciest clubs, it’s the one who can summon the will to keep swinging when things get tough.”

In the mid-1950s, five Mexican boys challenged the idea that golf was a white man’s sport. “The Long Game” is their true story.

Nicolas Cage (as Paul): “There are those who believe they came after the pollution that people caused, and they’re here to cleanse the planet of the human race.”

A bleak future. Monsters that only come out at night. And to top it off, Nicolas Cage in the lead role. “Arcadian” is all that — and a lot more.

Larissa Dali (as Becky): “Hello, I’m Rebecca. I’m one of your new neighbors. Everyone just calls me Becky.”

Folusho Peters (as Joy): “Nice to meet you.”

Everyone might call Larissa Dali “Becky,” but you’ll call her deadly after you check out this story of a neighbor from hell.

Simone Joy Jones (as Tanya Crandell): Morning, Mrs. Sturak. Mrs. Sturak?

Ayaamii Sledge (as Melissa Crandell): “Sweet! My first dead body.”

Miles Fowler (as Bryan): “I’m for sure going to juvie.”

“Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” is a 2024 retelling of the 1991 big screen comedy.

Not much has changed. Mom goes away, babysitter drops dead, and the kids go wild.

Donielle T. Hansley Jr. (as Kenny): “Dishes are done, man.”

The Black Keys talk about new album ‘Ohio Players,’ new documentary and working with Beck https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/the-black-keys-talk-about-new-album-ohio-players-new-documentary-and-working-with-beck/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:29:37 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1431773 The Black Keys are bringing it all back home. The superstar duo have dropped a new album and a documentary that celebrates their rise to the top of the music scene.

Patrick Carney: “I’m gonna take you to where like Dan and I started the band.”

The Black Keys’ latest release, “Ohio Players,” is a tribute to their home state.

It’s also a snapshot of what the band’s into these days.

Dan Auerbach: “I think it’s a reflection of where we’re at at the moment. We get extra extra picky about the music we’re making. We started traveling around and working with different people, you know, spinning records with different friends, and then writing songs with different friends.”

Singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney reunited with their fellow musician Beck to cut some tracks, including their party anthem, “Beautiful People Stay High.”

The Black Keys (singing): “All the beautiful people say ‘hey,’ all the beautiful people stay high, all the beautiful people say ‘Hey,’ I’m tellin’ you why.'”

Making music with Beck was a no-brainer.

The boys go way back.

Patrick Carney: “Beck, who’s a guy we’ve been a fan of for a long time, and a guy who gave us our first real big break, taking us on the road 21 years ago to open for him.”

“Ohio Players” comes on the heels of the release of the Keys’ career-spanning documentary, “This is a Film About the Black Keys.”

The doc shows them starting out, jamming and recording in an Ohio basement.

Dan Auerbach: “Right away, Pat and I totally bonded over that love of recording. Dan would come over, honk his horn to wake me up, and we would make coffee, and go down and start messing around with the sounds.”

It follows their journey from two guys jamming in a basement to becoming one of the biggest bands around.

Patrick Carney: “We wanted to create a document that could demonstrate, you know, all the luck and fate and hard work that played into the band, and also show, you know, what it takes to kind of maintain a creative partnership that, you know, has this type of longevity.”

Aries Spears ready to bring his raw and uncut brand of comedy to Fort Lauderdale’s Parker Playhouse https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/aries-spears-ready-to-bring-his-raw-and-uncut-brand-of-comedy-to-fort-lauderdales-parker-playhouse/ Sat, 30 Mar 2024 00:51:50 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1428731 These days, we’ll literally take any opportunity to laugh.

I know I will, at anyone’s expense.

Comedian Aries Spears is coming to South Florida, which means there’s gonna be plenty of chances to bust a gut.

Aries Spears: “Hey, yo, one, two, three and to the four, Snoop Doggy Dogg takin’ condoms out the door.”

Aries Spears is bringing his unique brand of comedy to Fort Lauderdale’s Parker Playhouse next weekend.

He’s ready to tell you what’s on his mind.

Aries Spears: “I try to stay a little bit topical in terms of what might be going on in the news.”

The funnyman really isn’t worried about being politically correct. He figures folks can make up their own minds about what’s funny.

Aries Spears: “People want to be able to make adult decisions on their own. I think we’re all capable of being able to do that.”

Times change, and so does the stuff he wants to talk about.

But Aries’ style is gonna stay the same. He knows what works, and he’s sticking with it.

Aries Spears: “Growing up as an ’80s baby, and coming from that era, I don’t know how to do anything else but stay true to the formula.”

One thing everybody can agree on: Aries does some dynamite impressions.

His Jay-Z is spot on.

Aries Spears (as Jay-Z): “Hova, homie, I told ya, the game’s over.”

Pushing the envelope comes naturally to Aries Spears. If you make it to his gig, you’re in for one heck of a ride.

Aries Spears: “Dave Chappelle said, ‘You don’t know where the line is in comedy until you cross it,’ George Carlin said, ‘You should know where the line in comedy is and deliberately cross it,’ and then Patrice O’Neal said, ‘Great comedy leaves half the audience laughing and the other half horrified.’ I live by those three credos.”

Aries Spears hits the stage at The Parker Playhouse on Friday, April 5.

Fort Lauderdale hops into Easter early with Spring Fling featuring 3 egg hunts, arts and crafts, music and more https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/fort-lauderdale-hops-into-easter-early-with-spring-fling-featuring-3-egg-hunts-arts-and-crafts-music-and-more/ Sat, 23 Mar 2024 01:04:10 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1426249 Spring has come to South Florida. The brutal winter weather is finally behind us. OK, I’m stretching things a bit, but it is spring, and an annual shindig is about to go down this weekend. It’s time for Spring Fling.

Beach Boys (singing): “For their hearts were full of spring.”

On Sunday, the sweet sounds of the season will fill the air when the fourth annual Spring Fling goes down at Las Olas Oceanside Park in Fort Lauderdale. And everyone is invited.

Arianne Glassman: “This is an event you can bring your children to, the grandparents to, your friends, your extended family, just for a wonderful day to celebrate the season here on Fort Lauderdale Beach.”

Your kids can get a jump on Easter, thanks to a trio of egg hunts.

Arianne Glassman: “We have three egg hunts timed out for the little ones: at 10 o’clock for those 5 and under, at 10:30 for those 6 to 9, and at 11 o’clock for your children that are 10 to 13.”

No need to stress. There’ll be plenty of yolks for everybody.

Arianne Glassman: “There are 12,000 eggs that are going to fill our 20,000-square-foot main lawn.”

Speaking of Easter, a certain bunny will be hanging around, ready to pose for photos with everyone.

The young ones won’t run out of things to do.

Arianne Glassman: “We have arts and crafts for the kids, as we are celebrating Youth Art Month.”

That’s just part of the party. There’ll be tons of vendors, performers and loads of music all day long.

And, when it’s time to chow down, you’ll have plenty of places to choose from.

Arianne Glassman: “And our farmer’s market is going to take over the perimeter of the park, so if you’re looking for some kind of wonderful picnic fare that you can enjoy and spend this glorious day here on Fort Lauderdale Beach, we have a little bit of something for everyone.”

Spring Fling is a chance to ring in the new season in a very cool way.

Arianne Glassman: “So everyone has been celebrating spring break here on Fort Lauderdale Beach. This really gives our locals and those still visiting the area an opportunity to take a break for themselves.”

The Mavericks return to Miami for a musical homecoming event at the Arsht Center https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/the-mavericks-return-to-miami-for-a-musical-homecoming-event-at-the-arsht-center/ Fri, 15 Mar 2024 00:29:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1422567 Miami’s known for turning out some of the best hip-hop and reggae ever made. Don’t forget country rock with a Latin flair. That’s really big, too!

That’s exactly what The Mavericks, a legendary local group, have been playing for a long time. Deco sat down with frontman Raul Malo to talk about the band’s big gig in the Magic City this weekend.

Raul Mano (singing): “Here comes my happiness again, right back to where it should have been.”

The Mavericks are coming home. The band started out in Miami over three decades ago. On Friday, they’ll be hitting the stage at the Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall.

Raul Malo: “Every time you come back here, it’s a homecoming, you know. It’s great to see old friends, family, the city.”

The show’s a one-off before they start their big tour next month.

Raul Malo: “I would officially say this is the pre-kickoff, you know. This is almost like a really important exhibition game.”

Exhibition or not, the music still counts. Fans will hear all the big tunes, plus new stuff from their upcoming album, “Moon and Stars.”

Raul Malo: (singing): “Heaven’s got the moon and stars, funny how they always are.”

Raul Malo: “We’re trying out new songs. We haven’t really played them out on tour for months, kind of thing.”

The Mavs have come a long way since their first gig at Churchill’s Pub in Miami. That was back in 1989.

Raul Malo: (singing): “Well I hope you find a better way to get through my front door.”

Looking back, paying their dues in the Magic City has made for great memories.

Raul Malo: “Those days were a lot of fun, and I remember them fondly. I’m sure that there was bad stuff and whatever, but you always forget that.”

The band’s love of Latin music comes directly from Raul.

Raul Malo: “The Cuban culture, I grew up in it, I’m a product of it. I’m a product of my parents’ American dream.”

The Mavericks are ready to rock your world Friday night.

Raul Malo: “And hopefully touch a nerve or remind somebody of something.”

Raul Malo (singing): “Right now tomorrow’s looking bright.”

If you want to dance the night away with The Mavericks on Friday, you’ll need tickets.

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-381/ Sun, 10 Mar 2024 01:18:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1420949 Here’s the bad news: we lose an hour of sleep this weekend.

Here’s the good news: there are six cool movies coming out, so who needs to nap?

These half-dozen hot new releases will keep your eyes open, for sure. Check ’em out in this week’s Showtime.

Jack Black (as Po, voice): “What is this place?”

Awkwafina (as Zhen, voice): “The best crooks and criminals live here.”

Jack Black (as Po, voice): “You’re a wanted criminal?”

Awkwafina (as Zhen, voice): “You sound surprised. Is it surprising?”

Po is in for a big surprise in “Kung Fu Panda 4.”

The big guy, voiced by Jack Black, thinks all will be well when he’s named the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace. Oh, how wrong he is.

Pyper Braun (as Alice): “Maybe we shouldn’t play together anymore, Chauncey. Maybe we shouldn’t be friends! No, no, no, no, no!”

If there’s one thing to be learned from watching “Imaginary,” it’s this: don’t leave behind the teddy bear you had as a kid. It won’t end well if you do.

Angela Bassett (as Lady Bayfort): “I need you to listen to me now: I don’t trust them. They may be royalty, but that doesn’t make them good people.”

Robin Wright (as Queen Isabelle): “Your hand, child.”

Nick Robinson (as Prince Henry): “Close your eyes. I’ve got you.”

[Prince Henry throws Elodie into the chasm. Elodie screams.]

Millie Bobby Brown gets lied to in a big way in “Damsel.”

The handsome prince she marries turns out to be a bad, bad man, and she’s got to fight to stay alive.

Cristiana Dell’Anna (as Cabrini): “We have to show America we are all people of dignity.”

Giampiero Judica (as Father Morelli): “Be careful, Mara. This place will eat you alive.”

She beat the odds. “Cabrini” is the true story of the Italian missionary who succeeded in creating better conditions for the poor kids of New York at the turn of the 20th century.

Danny Glover (as Jerry): “What kind of moron buys a house under such circumstances?”

[Dr. Phil Loder sobs.]

Danny Glover (as Jerry): “Are you crying?”

Peter Dinklage (as Dr. Phil Loder): “Sorry.”

Peter Dinklage has every right to shed some tears. In the dark comedy “American Dreamer,” his plan to finally become a homeowner turns into a full-blown nightmare.

Jermaine Fowler (as Wes): “This is a really bad idea.”

[Rod Rimestead throws up.]

Zac Efron (as Dean): “Aww, Jesus!”

John Cena (as Rod Rimestead): “I’ve been cold turkeying the booze. Ricky Stanicky’s in the program, remember?”

Andrew Santino (as JT): “Oh, Rod.”

John Cena (as Rod Rimestead): “It’s not what you think it is.”

John Cena plays a washed-up actor who gets the role of a lifetime in “Ricky Stanicky.”

Actually, he gets the role of somebody else’s lifetime. Sounds confusing? It’s not — but it is really funny.

Heather Mitchell (as Leona): “I want you to admit that Ricky Stanicky does not exist.”

John Cena (as Rod Rimestead): “Hey, mishpocha!”

Andrew Santino (as JT): “Stanicky!”

John Cena (as Rod Rimestead): “Oh, yes!”

Inner Circle to headline star-studded concert honoring Bob Marley’s legacy at Club M2 Miami https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/inner-circle-to-headline-star-studded-concert-honoring-bob-marleys-legacy-at-club-m2-miami/ Sat, 09 Mar 2024 01:59:56 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1420785 These are good days for Bob Marley. The reggae legend is the subject of a hit movie, “Bob Marley: One Love,” and this weekend, his life and music are being celebrated with a star-studded concert.

Bob Marley (singing): “No woman no cry.”

There’ll be no crying at Club M2 Miami on Sunday, just plenty of good vibes.

Reggae Revolution honoring Bob Marley will be going down, and Inner Circle is topping the bill.

Roger Lewis (singing): “People walking up to ya, singing glory hallelujah, then they’re tryin’ to sock it to ya, in the name of the Lord.”

Their connection with Bob goes back a long, long time.

Roger Lewis: “You know, we grew up with Bob, played on his first album, ‘Catch a Fire.'”

Shining a spotlight on Mr. Marley also means bringing Jamaica forward.

Roger Lewis: “Always important to celebrate a man who provides the front line of a culture and a country and a genre of music.”

Inviting the Circle to head up the party was a no-brainer.

Roger Lewis: “We’ve been living in Miami for 20, 30 years, so we figure out, we’re like the elder statesmen here so, you know, like the Mafia. Nuthin’ can come into town unless we control it.”

Third World will be bringing their sweet island sounds to the event.

Third World (singing): “Now that we found love, what are we gonna do with it.”

The band knows that celebrating Bob is also a way to give people a chance to appreciate the music they love.

Norris Webb: “To be a part of anything like this is always great, because it means that you’re keeping reggae music and the roots and the foundation of it alive.”

Every musician who takes the stage will be showing their love to Bob Marley: the man who brought reggae music to the world.

AJ Brown: “It’s an honor a privilege and a treat for me to be able to be part of what’s happening now, in terms of celebrating the life and times of our beloved Robert Nesta Marley, Bob Marley.”

Tickets are going fast for Sunday’s Reggae Revolution.

Asian dishes, a three-course meal: Local restaurants have sweet deals for Leap Day https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/asian-dishes-a-three-course-meal-local-restaurants-have-sweet-deals-for-leap-day/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 01:25:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1417155 Twenty-nine. That’s a very special number. It only comes around once in a lifetime, and if you happen to be the month of February, once every four years.

Twenty-nine is also the price of some special meals on Thursday. Deco’s got the deets that’ll have you leaping all these deals.

Getting engaged on Leap Day sounds nice, but there are other ways of celebrating Feb. 29 — like taking in the tasty deal at Sriracha House in Miami Beach.

Emilio Benzadon: “We’re gonna give our customers that order one of the house favorites — one of Build Your Own Wok — we’re gonna give them a free milk tea and a free spring roll.”

The House prides itself on whipping up fast, casual, healthy Asian dishes. In this place, you take a wok on the wild side.

Emilio Benzadon: “We have egg noodles, rice noodles, glass noodles, udon noodles. You can add protein to that; it can be a regular protein like chicken breast, shrimp, steak, pork, but also, we have two vegan options.”

FYI, the spring roll that’s part of the deal? That’s vegetarian-friendly, too, and your thirst will be handled properly.

Emilio Benzadon: “We have two different types of milk teas, which is taro milk or golden milk tea.”

Natalie Macadar: “I love the vibe here. The flavors are bold, hot. It’s definitely healthy.”

Twenty-nine dollars also buys you some Leap Day love at S3 on Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Chef Carlos Rodriguez: “S3 stands for the name, ‘Sun, Surf and Sand,’ and also for ‘Steak Seafood Sushi.'”

Those last three dishes — steak, seafood, and sushi — are at the heart of the restaurant’s one-day deal.

Chef Carlos Rodriguez: “We’re gonna start with sushi, which is tuna, spicy tuna roll. The second one we’re gonna have is a noodle wok, which is lo mein noodles with shrimp in it, and then at the end we have steak, four ounces of churrasco steak, black garlic glaze on top.”

There’s actually a fourth “s” word involved in all this. They might have to change the joint’s name for a night.

Chef Carlos Rodriguez: “We’ll also have a special sake that day, so, yeah, I guess we’re becoming S4 that night.”

You get an 24 hours this year. Spending time at S3 sounds pretty good.

Chef Carlos Rodriguez: “Sushi, seafood, steak, ocean view, fire pit, sake. Why not?”

Lexi Heath: “I think it’s amazing. We are at S3, so to get steak, seafood and sushi all in one plate is perfect.”

You know you want to dive into one of these Leap Day deals.

Kiss frontman Paul Stanley discusses artistic impulse behind his paintings, now on display at Wentworth Gallery https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/kiss-frontman-paul-stanley-discusses-artistic-impulse-behind-his-paintings-now-on-display-at-wentworth-gallery/ Sat, 24 Feb 2024 05:35:28 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1416027 After 50 years of rocking the world, Kiss called it quits in December. The band’s frontman, Paul Stanley, isn’t looking for a hobby. He’s kicked his art career up a few notches. Deco got a look at his latest work at the Wentworth Gallery inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

As a member of Kiss, Paul Stanley conquered the universe with a guitar in his hands. These days, he creates with a paintbrush and lets his artwork do the talking.

He says he never knows what’s going to happen.

Paul Stanley: “Picasso said that if he had to describe himself as an artist, he would say he’s an artist without a style, and I love the idea, that that’s always morphing into something else.”

Whether it’s his earlier, portrait-based work or his current impressionistic paintings, one characteristic has always connected Paul’s work.

Paul Stanley: “I’ve always loved color. To me, color is a way of affirming life. Life should be colorful.”

What the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer is looking for in the painting process is simple. He’s searching for spontaneity.

Paul Stanley: “I want to get further and further away from planning something out and letting it be completely organic. That, to me, is the purest sense of who I am.”

Kiss was always known as a band who put their fans ahead of their critics. As a visual artist, Paul is sticking to that belief.

Paul Stanley: “You don’t need to be told what’s good. Innately, you know what’s good. Good is what emotionally moves you in terms of art or music.”

You may think creating a painting and recording a song have a lot in common. That’s where you’d be wrong.

Paul Stanley: “For me, music and art are almost the antithesis of each other. Music is much more structured. As I approach art, it’s not structured.”

Paul has a special message for all his SoFlo fans.

Paul Stanley: “I’m so happy to be down in South Florida. I’ve spent so much time down here. I’ve been here since the days of jai alai, and I love South Florida, and I love you, and come see me.”

Paul Stanley was on hand at the Wentworth Gallery at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino until 9 p.m. on Friday. He’ll be at the Wentworth Gallery in Boca Raton on Saturday.

New exhibition in Miami dives into the life of painter and inventor Leonardo da Vinci https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/new-exhibition-in-miami-dives-into-the-life-of-painter-and-inventor-leonardo-da-vinci/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 02:15:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1412822 The Mona Lisa. The Last Supper. Just those two works alone would secure Leonardo da Vinci’s place in history as an artist.

But he was so much more than a painter. A new exhibition in SoFlo reveals what an amazing inventor he also was.

Yeah, that’s right, da Vinci! You won’t need a special code to check out the great man’s talents in “Da Vinci: Machines and Robotics,” an exhibition making its U.S. debut in Miami’s Security Building.

Geoffrey Bash: “This exhibition are on loan from the da Vinci museum of Florence, Italy.”

There are copies of the Italian genius’ many inventions scattered around the world. The ones in this exhibit are considered the most authentic because of who constructed them.

Geoffrey Bash: “It’s the only da Vinci exhibition that is actually built by artisans of Florence.”

Da Vinci was obviously a workaholic. He created hundreds of inventions. The cream of the crop is here.

Geoffrey Bash: “You’re going to see and experience and interact with more than 60 of them here in our exhibition.”

You can really get a hands-on feel for Leo’s creations.

Geoffrey Bash: “Each exhibit has a label. Wherever the label is a green heading, ee encourage you to put your hands on it with care, operate the invention.”

That means you can use the flywheel thing for continuous rotary motion; the Archimedes screw, a hydraulic machine that lifts water; or a drum that, well, does what a drum does.

The guy was so far ahead of his time, it’s kind of frightening. He invented the first car, the first helicopter and the first robot. My God, he’s exhausting.

Here’s a big reason why this exhibit is so important.

Geoffrey Bash: “Leonardo built, actually, only very few of his inventions, and none of those have survived today.”

From his artwork to his inventions, “Da Vinci: Machines and Robotics” shows the vision of a most creative man.

Geoffrey Bash: “His artwork, however, is survived, and this is why we know da Vinci more for his art, generally speaking, than all of the inventions and genius things that he designed.”

“Da Vinci: Machines and Robotics” is happening right now.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a tropical twist at Sweet Aloha Ice Cream in Davie https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/celebrate-valentines-day-with-a-tropical-twist-at-sweet-aloha-ice-cream-in-davie/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 01:50:23 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1411202 If you’re looking to do something different for Valentine’s Day, listen up. There’s a place in Davie that’s got something sweet and cool waiting for you. We’re talking about Valentine’s Day, Hawaiian style.

Give your baby a rockin’ Valentine’s Day experience at Sweet Aloha Ice Cream.

Jimmy Anderson: “For Valentine’s Day, we’re hosting Aloha Always, a Valentine Romantic Rendezvous.”

You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the islands for the night.

Jimmy Anderson: “We are bringing the spirit of aloha to Valentine’s Day and allowing valentines to come and enjoy an appetizer together and a specially prepared menu flight of mini ice cream cakes.”

The aloha spirit starts as soon as you walk in. A lei is placed around your neck as Brother Derek serenades you.

Brother Derek (singing): “On a white sandy beach of Hawaii.”

Your evening kicks off with a special drink.

Jimmy Anderson: “The cocktail is the Paradise Passion Mimosa. It’s made up of brut Champagne. It’s also made with our handmade POG juice, passion orange guava juice. It’s one of Hawaii’s specialty fruit drinks.”

You can start sharing your love when the appetizer hits the table. It’s good — berry, berry good.

Jimmy Anderson: “Strawberries and cream with a special fruit dip, a family recipe that we prepared.”

Now comes the triple threat entrée: the flight of mini ice cream cakes.

Jimmy Anderson: “The first is raspberry cheesecake, the second is chocolate-covered strawberry, and the third is chocolate haupia pie.

We’ll give you a little help with that last one.

Jimmy Anderson: “So haupia is a coconut flavor that’s kind of halfway between a pudding and a flan.”

Everything being served has been made specifically for Valentine’s Day. So, treat yourself and your special one to a night to remember.

Pedro: “Because I think Valentine’s Day is typically supposed to be atypical, so I think this experience is quite unique.”

You’ve got to make reservations for your Valentine’s Day ice cream dreams come true at Sweet Aloha.

Check out this Italian-style pizza place in Fort Lauderdale’s Yacht Haven https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/check-out-this-italian-style-pizza-place-in-fort-lauderdales-yacht-haven/ Wed, 07 Feb 2024 01:03:48 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1409631 Finding a pizza place in South Florida is like finding a gecko in your backyard. In other words, they’re everywhere. But if you’re looking for the kind of pizza they serve over in Italy, you’ll have to search a little harder. Deco’s found the real deal in a most unlikely place.

Fort Lauderdale’s Yacht Haven Park and Marina is home to some tasty motor coaches. There’s one four-wheeled machine, that’s the tastiest of all: Saverio’s pizza trucks.

Emily Cataldo: “Saverio’s is bringing authentic pizza Napoletana, to South Florida, to the lovely Fort Lauderdale area.”

Here’s the lowdown on what the Long Island-based business is serving up.

Emily Cataldo: “Authentic pizza Napoletana means we abide by certain regulations that make it as authentic to the region of Naples as possible, using only the finest imported and fresh ingredients.”

That covers everything from the dough to the tomato sauce to anything that’s placed on the pie.

Emily Cataldo: “We’re very proud Italians and we want to hold to our roots and our heritage. Being an authentic Neapolitan pizza maker gives us a little bit of a niche and it introduces our heritage to lovely families that we have around our table.”

Julia Roberts: “I’m in love. I’m having a relationship with my pizza.”

There is so much to love here. You can go traditional with the Margherita pie. That’s just cheese, sauce, and dough or you can dare to dive into something special, like the speck pizza.

Emily Cataldo: A mozzarella base topped with spec which is smoked prosciutto. It’s put over the mozzarella and baked in the oven when it comes out it’s topped with hand-shaven Parmigiano Reggiano and your choice of either truffle oil or Mike’s hot honey.”

Vegetarians will be thankful for the mozzarella-based alina. You get thin-sliced fried eggplant topped with ricotta cheese and sweet honey.

Emily Cataldo: “Hot pizza with cold dollops of ricotta and that sweetness of the honey. It’s just really delicious.”

You might think placing a pizza truck in a motor home park is a strange move. It’s all part of a bigger plan.

Emily Cataldo: This is our test kitchen. The future holds probably a few brick-and-mortar stores here in South Florida.”

You’re probably wondering: Can anybody come to get a pie at Saverio’s? We think you’ll like the answer.

Emily Cataldo: “You do not need to be a resident of Yacht Haven you’re more than welcome to come up to the gate, press the button, and just let the gatekeeper know that you’re here to enjoy our pizza.”

Donnie Ganong: “We learned you know from research that these guys kinda big-time in New York and they’re great. They’re as good as advertised.”

Okay. So why is there a top-shelf pizza truck hidden away in yacht haven? We were told the guy who owns the park is partners with the pizza people. He asked them to come down from New York. So they did.

Turn back the clock to the 1920’s with a secret speakeasy in Brickell https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/turn-back-the-clock-to-the-1920s-with-a-secret-speakeasy-in-brickell/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 01:09:43 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1408912 Phone booths. You don’t see many of them nowadays. If you spot the red one in Brickell, you know you’re in the right place. Deco’s Alex Miranda is all dialed in for a great night out.

Mark Williams (as Mr. Weasley) “I’ve never used the visitor’s entrance before. Should be fun.”

Trust us. The red Phone Booth is a lot of fun.

Stephen de Haan: “We are a 1920’s speakeasy. We’re a classic prohibition experience, turn back time a hundred years.”

Your time machine is, you guessed it, a red phone booth.

Stephen de Haan: “Guests step into a London red phone booth that we import from London, England. They dial our 1930’s rotary phone, back of the phone booth opens, and then they’re transported back in time.”

They have a big time membership program here. You don’t have to join, but the perks are impressive.

Stephen da Haan: One of the main benefits honestly is that you can reserve couches. As a member, there’s not a lot of places that you can have cocktail reservations without minimums and bottle spends. This is all about a family.”

It really is all about family at the Red Phone Booth.

Stephen da Haan: “The entire Red Phone Booth Experience is a homage to my grandfather. He was a pharmacist prescribing whiskey during prohibition for medicinal purposes.”

Grandpa also loved to smoke cigars, which are easy to come by in this joint. The old man knew the secret to a tremendous drink, as well.

Stephen da Haan: So then he pulls out a cocktail book written in 1941 called “Here’s How” and so that’s really that’s where all this comes from, that’s where our cocktails come from.”

All the cocktails are worthy of your interest. One stands above the rest, though.

Stephen da Haan: “Our top-selling cocktail is our traditional smoked fashioned”

Bitters and sugar are muddled together. 8-year-old Bourbon follows. Hickory wood chips are lit and smoked. Check out how they chill your drink too.

Stephen da Haan: “They are going to hand-chip the ice and prepare it on an ice ball so we use a Tarzan ice press, eight pounds, copper insulted.”

All this hard work is worth it.

Stephen da Haan: “And it really is about achieving the proper balance of dilution with stirring the ice, not over-diluting the cocktail, allowing the bourbon to shine through.”

The upstairs lounge is known as the mafia room. Play pool, play poker, or catch a game on one of the flat screens.

The folks at the Red Phone Booth believe their first-ever Florida location is calling your name.

Stephen da Haan: “We are going to do nothing less than blow your mind.”

There are two ways to get the phone number that gets you into the Red Phone Booth. You can become friends with someone who is already a member or ask any of the concierges in the Brickell neighborhood. Memberships begin at $400 a year.

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-376/ Sat, 03 Feb 2024 01:44:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1407937 It’s a brand-new month, with a bunch of brand-new movies. Now that the South Florida winter is in full swing, why not stay warm and watch a few flicks? We’ve got five for you to choose from. Get a taste of them all in this week’s Showtime.

Sam Rockwell (as Aidan Wilde): “What you wrote in your new book actually happened, and you kicked a hornet’s nest you didn’t know existed.”

Bryce Dallas Howard (as Elly Conway): ‘I’m in some really big trouble, Mom.”

All Bryce Dallas Howard does in “Argylle” is write a novel about a secret agent out to bust an international spy ring. When fiction begins turning into reality, well, that’s when the action starts.

Leah McKendrick (as Nellie Robinson): “I’m thinking about getting my eggs frozen.”

Yvonne Strahovski (as Sara): “That’s amazing,”

Leah McKendrick (as Nellie Robinson): “Maybe I should have a baby shower.”

Emily Chang (as Michelle): “But you’re not having a baby.”

The clock is ticking, and a woman in her mid-30s has a big decision to make: whether or not to give herself the chance to have kids later in life. No wonder she’s feeling so “Scrambled.”

Paul Walter Hauser (as Dark, voice): “Orion, I’m gonna get you to overcome your fears if it kills me.”

Jacob Tremblay (as Orion, voice): “Whoa.”

Paul Walter Hauser (as Dark, voice): “My job is the most fundamental. I show up every night, and I bring it.”

Jacob Tremblay (as Orion, voice): “Bring what?”

Paul Walter Hauser (as Dark, voice): “Dark.”

When you’re a young kid, the nighttime can be pretty scary. In “Orion and the Dark,” the creature who brings the midnight hours helps a boy get over his fear of the evening.

Thomas Jane (as Hunt): “Congratulations, Adams. You are a father. Nobody told you? You’re gonna spend the rest of your life in here. You ain’t never gonna see that.”

[Adams screams, throws punch.]

“Bosco” is the true story of a guy sentenced to 35 years in prison. When he finds out he’s going to be a dad, he won’t let anything stop him from being at the birth of his first child.

Henry Golding (as Hu/Tiger, voice): “Your grandmother was a guardian sworn to protect humanity. Now the duty of protecting it is yours.”

Brandon Soo Hoo (as Tom Lee, voice): “Ha, ha, very funny. Right?”

Hey, if some guy suddenly showed up and told you your grandma used to protect the world and now it’s your turn, you’d be skeptical, too. “The Tiger’s Apprentice” is a tale of how a young boy learns to accept his fate, thanks to a talking tiger.

[Hu roars.]

Brandon Soo Hoo (as Tom Lee, voice): “Whoa.”

Henry Golding (as Hu/Tiger, voice): “I know it’s cool.”

Black History and Reggae Month events in SoFlo to be filled with music, fashion and food https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/black-history-and-reggae-month-events-in-soflo-to-be-filled-with-music-fashion-and-food/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 01:48:42 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1407461 February has got to be the coolest month of the year, and we’re not talking about the weather. When you mix Reggae Month and Black History Month together, some great stuff is about to happen. There’ll be parties, food, dancing, fashion and music … a lot of music.

Shaggy (singing): “You’re a queen, and that’s how you should be treated, though you never get the loving that you needed.”

For Shaggy, the celebration of the music he loves is a full-time gig, especially during Reggae Month.

Shaggy: “I think our job as artists and people who are within the music, and it’s our lifestyle, and it’s really – we serve as ambassadors, you know, to bring people in to come within the culture itself.”

Reggae legends Inner Circle are at the heart of the month-long celebration.

Abebe Lewis: “Well, we got a bunch of different events happening on the fourth. We’re kicking it off at Blue Martini, where we’re doing an Inner Circle meet and greet.”

The Blue Martini soiree is just the start. Don’t miss the Reggae Genealogy Concert at the Island SPACE Caribbean Museum in Plantation, Rastafari Day in North Miami, and Praise on the Green in Miramar.

Not only is February Black History Month, but it’s also Alvin Ailey’s 65th anniversary, and they are giving you the gift of dance at the Arsht Center.

Suzette Espinosa Fuentes: “We’re really excited about kicking off Black History Month with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. Audiences love them. We’re gonna see athleticism, beautiful music, and of course, gorgeous choreography.”

Dancer Constance Stamatiou can’t wait for the audience to experience the Alvin Ailey masterpiece “Revelations.”

Constance Stamatiou: “He wanted to give dance back to the people, and that’s his mantra: dance came from the people, and it should be given back.”

And “Ode,” a piece from Miami native Jamar Roberts.

Jamar Roberts: “‘Ode’ is an ode to victims of gun violence in America. It’s basically a piece where I wanted to definitely address a very hard issue, but I wanted to do it with as much love as I possibly could.”

There’s gonna be all types of food and great music at this year’s Afro Carib Festival in Miramar.

Alexandra P. Davis: “We have salsa, we have kompa, reggae and Afrobeats all in one place, as we celebrate the African diaspora. We are very diverse, and we want to make sure folks know about the culture of the Caribbean.”

Fireboy DML headlines the event, and Grammy winner Kabaka Pyramid will hit the stage, too.

Kabaka Pyramid: “I am very excited to be performing. Being able to represent the culture here is important for me.”

The festival is also adding some local musical flavor to the mix. How ya feel about that, Yung Wylin’?

Yung Wylin’: “It’s an amazing opportunity to perform in front of a huge crowd like that and to open up for the other artists.”

The Afro Carib Festival takes place Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater.

Party on the sand as the Seaglass Experience takes over Fort Lauderdale Beach https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/party-on-the-sand-as-the-seaglass-experience-takes-over-fort-lauderdale-beach/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 01:40:20 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1404693 Think pink! Seaglass: A Fort Lauderdale Rosé Experience is going down on the beach this weekend. There is so much to do!

Deco made it up to Vitolo restaurant in Fort Lauderdale to get the deets on this year’s shindig.

Luca Alex (singing): “You’re my rosé wine, I sip you all the time.”

Everything’s coming up rosé at this year’s Seaglass Experience.

Stephanie Toothaker: “We are wider, bigger, better. We have more experiences, we have more wines.”

It’s not just the wine that separates Seaglass from other happenings. See, you party right on the beach.

Stephanie Toothaker: “I think one of the things that makes Seaglass so incredibly exciting and different is that it happens in the sand.”

You’ll have your pick of over 30 varieties of rosé and it’s not the only beverage on hand, but it’s the one that best sums up our South Florida lifestyle.

Stephanie Toothaker: “Rosé, I think, just speaks to putting your toes in the sand and enjoying the experience.”

Just because you may have attended Seaglass in the past, doesn’t mean you’re in for the same old, same old this time around.

Stephanie Toothaker: We’ve added different chefs, we’ve added more food experiences, we’ve added different kinds of music.”

One thing that hasn’t changed is the suggested color of your attire. Thanks to a certain movie, pink really is where it’s at.

Stephanie Toothaker: “With Barbiecore, you get to wear your best pink, get really in the mood, get really into the whole Seaglass theme.”

While you’re sipping and sliding the day and the night away, you’re also supporting a good cause.

Stephanie Toothaker: “We’re very proud of our partnership with the Pink Angels Memorial Foundation that gives a portion of the proceeds to breast cancer.”

Two final words about Seaglass: be there. I will!

Stephanie Toothaker: “It’s just such an incredibly fun experience. It’s just one not to be missed.”

The three-day Seaglass Experience kicks off on Friday on the beach across from the Bahia Mar Hotel.

From Deerfield to Hallandale, 6th Lauderdale Art Week ignites cutting-edge creativity across Broward https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/from-deerfield-to-hallandale-6th-lauderdale-art-week-ignites-cutting-edge-creativity-across-broward/ Thu, 25 Jan 2024 01:21:08 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1404266 Lauderdale Art Week is back in Broward. Prepare to be amazed. Cutting-edge creativity is everywhere. Deco’s Alex Miranda is right in the middle of IGNITE Broward, the week’s big event.

Creation is literally at your fingertips at the Sixth Annual Lauderdale Art Week. It exists for one reason.

Andrew Martineau: “To be able to highlight all the incredible things art has to offer from an arts and culture standpoint.”

Good stuff is going on all around Broward this week.

Andrew Martineau: “There’s several events going on throughout the county, in multiple cities, from Deerfield all the way down to Hallandale.”

The presentations go on indoors and outdoors. It’s a unique way to experience the talents of your neighbors.

Andrew Martineau: “The week is really gonna give you an opportunity to be able to, like, really take a bunch of different opportunities and exhibits and events that really focus on all the incredible art and artists that we have here throughout the county.”

Ideas from around the world are on display at Mad Arts in Dania Beach. It’s the home of the week’s crowing event: IGNITE Broward.

Phillip Dunlap: “IGNITE itself is a five-day and night, free, family-friendly festival that showcases the greatest art at the intersection of art and technology, featuring local and international artists.”

Your mind will be blown by what you see, and that’s a good thing.

Phillip Dunlap: “They’re going to see a ton of great art installations that feature both digital technology, analog and digital technology, projection mapping, light sculptures, interactive elements.”

It’s not hype to say that Fort Lauderdale itself is a big part of IGNITE Broward.

Buildings and outdoor spaces aren’t scenery. They’re part of the exhibits.

Phillip Dunlap: “We’ve got everything from large scale works, to sculptural elements, to interactive elements, to small immersive art installations. It’s varied, it’s diverse, and it showcases the best art that utilizes technology.”

With so much art to take in, make sure you make time to be a part of IGNITE Broward.

Phillip Dunlap: “I think, when people come to IGNITE, they’re going to be surprised at the breadth and the depth of the art that we have here.”

Lauderdale Art Week runs through Sunday.

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-373/ Fri, 12 Jan 2024 02:39:45 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1399718 OK, listen up. Maybe you’re gonna watch football this weekend, maybe you’ve got other plans. That’s fine, but you know you have a duty to watch some movies as well, right? We’ve got a half-dozen cinematic wonders for you to check out, courtesy of this week’s Showtime.

Tina Fey (as Ms. Norbury): “We as women have to be able to support each other.”

Reneé Rapp (as Regina George): “Get in, loser.”

Busy Philipps (as Mrs. George): “Welcome, Cady.”

It’s not a reboot. It’s not a sequel. It’s not a film version of the Broadway musical.

“Mean Girls” is a little bit of all of those things rolled into one, which means it’s a gas.

Jason Statham (as Adam Clay): “I protect the hive. When the system is out of balance, I correct it.”

Emmy Raver-Lampman (as Agent Verona Parker): “We have laws for these things!”

Jason Statham (as Adam Clay): “Until they fail. Then you have me.”

This time, it’s personal. Jason Statham is out for revenge in “The Beekeeper.”

When his close friend kills herself after she’s ripped off of all her savings, Jason jumps into action.

LaKeith Stanfield (as Clarence): “Oh, dead one. Open your eyes. Elijah.”

A down-on-his-luck contemporary of Jesus Christ pretends he’s a new messiah, in order to better his life. “The Book of Clarence” is a comedy with some deep, deep thoughts.

David Oyelowo (as Dave Brackett): “You kill people?”

Kaley Cuoco (as Emma Brackett): “It’s over. I never wanted to lie to you. I just wanted a normal life and have a family to protect.”

Kaley Cuoco is not what she seems in “Role Play”: a faithful wife, a loving mother … and a contract killer who’s trying to leave her bloody past behind.

Charlie Weber (as Peter): “Tell me about the people who came to kill me.”

Jon Voight (as Byrne): “She thinks that you’re in possession of something that poses a major threat to our national security.”

“The Painter” is the story of a former CIA operative who gets pulled back into his old gig when enemies from his past target him for death.

Kevin Hart (as Cyrus): “If we don’t do this, we go to jail.”

Gugu Mbatha-Raw (as Abby): Plus, it’s about saving lives.”

Úrsula Corberó (as Camila): “I don’t appreciate the emotional blackmail.”

Kevin Hart (as Cyrus): “This is not emotional blackmail. This is blackmail blackmail.”

Don’t get “Lift” confused with a ride-sharing service. It’s a heist flick starring Kevin Hart.

Kev and his band of fellow thieves set out to steal half a million dollars in gold from a plane in mid-flight. Not an easy thing to do.

Úrsula Corberó (as Camila): “We’re taking the plane?”

Yun Jee Kim (as Mi-Sun): “The whole plane?”

Kevin Hart (as Cyrus): “It’s kinda hard to take half a plane.”

Dania After Dark Art Festival: Brand-new event shines spotlight on local artists https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/dania-after-dark-art-festival-brand-new-event-shines-spotlight-on-local-artists/ Fri, 12 Jan 2024 02:09:02 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1399680 It’s no secret that lots of interesting things happen in South Florida after the sun goes down, especially up in Dania Beach. A brand-new festival is set to take place there. Its purpose is to shine a light on the creations of local artists.

Turn down the lights and open your eyes. The first annual Dania After Dark Art Festival is ready for its close-up.

Cassi Waren: “The Dania After Dark Art Festival is part of a larger series of events called Dania After Dark, which is a new, rebranded, revitalized event series here in Dania Beach.”

Rarely has a government site been so hip.

Cassi Waren: “Attendees will be able to see art from all over the place. They’ll be able to go to a glow museum, art museum, inside of our City Hall.”

What’s hanging on the walls is meant to provoke and energize you.

Maddison Newbold: “My artwork is generally a representation of myself. I’m a very bright, eccentric person. I like to reflect that in my art, which is why use the neon.”

The festival is the perfect place to display artwork bursting with bright colors.

Maddison Newbold: “I’ve never lived somewhere that is so accepting of art in every shape and form, and I’m just very excited to be a part of that.”

City Hall is also home for Dania After Dark’s “Mosaic Activation” display.

Photo Booth Coordinator: “So what you’re going to see is something that is new to South Florida. Our static photo booth in place will take those photos of everyone’s pictures throughout the event and in the end create one large art piece of artwork.”

You’ll be spending time outside under the stars, too. Look on and wonder as surrounding structures become canvasses for moving images.

Marc Aptakin: “We are taking video art and projecting it onto a building we map and make the building come alive.”

All artists who call Dania Beach home are jazzed about the art festival.

Marc Aptakin: “It’s a new experience, and it will continue to grow from here, and we get to see it from the beginning.”

You don’t think we’d send you anywhere without food, do you? We wouldn’t do that to a dog, and speaking of dogs, you’ll find some tasty ones between your buns.

Bobby Gonzalez: “We specialize in the Chicago menu. I make a fantastic hot dog, but I gotta tell ya, my daughter makes them pretty. She makes ’em pretty. She lines the mustard up like art.”

The free event is happening this Saturday at the Dania Beach City Hall Plaza.

YOLO’s CAM the Caviar Butler: A high-tech twist on champagne and caviar dining https://wsvn.com/entertainment/yolos-cam-the-caviar-butler-a-high-tech-twist-on-champagne-and-caviar-dining/ Tue, 09 Jan 2024 21:42:03 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1398770 Our definition of the good life? Having champagne and caviar served to you by a butler darling. Nothing but the best, even if that butler is a machine.

One Las Olas Restaurant provides a top-shelf dining experience thanks to a very stylish and very obliging Mr. Robot.

CAM the Caviar Butler is rolling out a meal to remember at YOLO in Fort Lauderdale.

Chef Miguel Casanova: “CAM is always ready to deliver a champagne and caviar service to any table.”

Why CAM you might be asking?

The name stands for Caviar Accoutrements Mobile Butler.

It’s Yolo’s latest move to stay one step ahead of the competition.

Chef Miguel Casanova: “We kick off the New Year’s with CAM. You’re always trying to do something new, so CAM is our latest feature. It’s a modern approach of a classic parry of champagne and caviar.”

Mr. Bot will come scooting over to your table with his top hat and bow tie, but he won’t be alone.

Chef Miguel Casanova: “CAM is always accompanied by a beautiful hostess.”

They’re bringing the good stuff and a few extras like Honey Truffle Chicken Tenders. They’re also part of the deal.

Chef Miguel Casanova: “Anybody come place an order for CAM and then we’re going to prepare the robot with the champagne, caviar, Beef Tartar Cones, and Crispy Tuna Rice Cakes. Caviar is the main guy, and the other ones are the friends.”

The Golden Osetra Caviar comes with a serving of mini pancakes and Manchego cheese foam. Open the mini bottles of Malay Shandong and unleash the bubbly because there’s plenty of both to go around.

Chef Miguel Casanova: “Normally serve two to four people depending on how many people we have at the table but you can always upgrade to a bigger size. CAM can handle it all.”

The whole process starts at $150.00. The food and drink are only part of your evening though.

Chef Miguel Casanova: “People are interested in new things, so I think we can deliver a different experience. It’s a fun introduction to caviar.”

Rose Aharonian: “The whole experience was great. It’s new, it’s different. You’ve never seen it anywhere. The caviar, the champagne, everything that comes with it.”

Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival returns for 5th year, providing a week of culinary wonder https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/visit-lauderdale-food-wine-festival-returns-for-5th-year-providing-a-week-of-culinary-wonder/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 01:42:03 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1397109 Foodies of Fort Lauderdale, it is that time of year again. The city is about to become the center of the SoFlo food scene.

Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival is back with a week of culinary wonder. And the star of our show: wine!

Things will be sizzling in Broward next week at Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival.

Rory Cooksey: “The 2024 Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival is Broward County’s largest food and wine event.”

That’s no hype. Eateries from all around will be showing off their stuff for you to enjoy.

Rory Cooksey: “You’re experiencing culinary creations from all over Broward County, so it’s not just Fort Lauderdale. It’s literally every city in the county.”

This is the festival’s fifth year. It keeps growing, bringing in big names and showcasing big events.

Rory Cooksey: It’s big enough for people like Aarón Sánchez from ‘Celebrity MasterChef’ to come out here and be one of our headline chefs. We’ve added additional headlining events like Wok ‘n Roll at Backyard.”

Wok ‘n Roll shines a spotlight on the different Asian tastes available in the area.

Diego Ng: “We’re gonna be traveling from east to west, all over Southeast Asia, through all the restaurants that are here in Fort Lauderdale.”

You’ll really get the best of what each place has to offer, and a lot more.

Diego Ng: “Every single restaurant is gonna be showcasing one of their signature dishes. Some of them are gonna be coming up with a lot of fun things.”

Here’s a tip. Do not miss the Kalua pulled pork bao buns. This bit of Polynesian perfection starts with juicy shredded pork.

Diego Ng: “And then we’re gonna put it on a bao bun and serve it with just a little pickled vegetables and a little bit of our very signature gochujang cream.”

Favorite events, like the Barbecue Battle, will be going down once again.

The festival peaks in Las Olas Oceanside Park, where the grand tasting goes down. As always, The Restaurant People, or TRP , will be there.

Chef Martin Verano: “We’re showcasing our restaurants, and we’re showcasing the best dishes of every restaurant. We’re also showcasing a lot of the best cocktails from mixologists in our restaurants.”

TRP is going in a new direction this year.

Chef Martin Verano: “We are doing what we call a beach fireplace style of cooking.”

A prime example of that style is the seafood paella from Boatyard. It’s filled with shellfish, vegetables and rice. It’s a perfect dish for a beach blowout.

Chef Martin Verano: “We’re super excited about the Food & Wine Festival happening again for the fifth time. We’re very excited to be part of it, and now getting bigger and better things going,”

Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival kicks off Monday and runs through Jan. 14.

Musical mystery guessing game ‘I Can See Your Voice’ returns for 3rd season on Fox https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/musical-mystery-guessing-game-i-can-see-your-voice-returns-for-3rd-season-on-fox/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 01:18:50 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1396697 If you like guessing games, listen up! The coolest guessing game on TV is ready to kickstart a brand-new season.

Deco caught up with one of the stars of “I Can See Your Voice.” What we found out will sound like music to your ears, hopefully.

Contestant (singing): “But I said no, no, no, no, no, no.”

Looks can be deceiving in “I Can See Your Voice.” People who look like they couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket turn in terrific performances. While others, not so much.

Woman (singing): “Black velvet and that little boy smile.”

Good or bad, contestants can win big bucks if they guess if someone is a good singer without ever hearing their voice.

Celebrity detective Adrienne Houghton filled us in on how the show works, so we wouldn’t have to guess.

Adrienne Houghton: “The fact that, like, you are kind of judging a book by its cover, in this case you’ve been told not to do that your whole life, and now this just might win you $100,000.”

Houghton went into the gig thinking she could see right through the fakers and pick the true talents. It didn’t work out that way.

Adrienne Houghton: “I thought that that seems so fun, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m gonna be so good at this,’ and then I forgot the fact that there are incredibly talented people who are great at acting and fooling us.”

As a celebrity detective, she tries to pick up on any clues that she can find to help the contestant crack the case.

Adrienne Houghton: “I pay attention to all the small, tiny details of breath placement, to even simple things like how they pronounce certain words.”

Adrienne Houghton (during show): “The sound we heard was so roundm and yet the mouth was giving Brice. It was like an ‘aww’ but she was giving ‘ehh.'”

There’s a real connection between the on-camera panel and fans of the show. They’ve become detectives in their own right.

Adrienne Houghton: “So I feel like our audience that’s been with us now, third season, they’ve been with us for all this time, they’re catching on, too. I mean, I’ve seen people watching the show with a pen and paper because they see that we’re taking notes.”

“I Can See Your Voice”‘ is hosted by Dr. Ken Jeong.

Ken Jeong: “Life is all about big swings, and you’re taking a big swing.”

Ken brings the laughs and much, much more.

Adrienne Houghton: “Obviously, we’re having fun and it’s hysterical, but the heart of the show is the contestant, and the way that he connects with the contestant is absolutely beautiful.”

Adrienne loves her gig, but one part of the show is her absolute favorite.

Adrienne Houghton, your best guess: “The best, best part is that on every single episode we have a musical guest, a singer, a celebrity singer, and they end up doing a duet at the end of the show.”

She got to be the celebrity singer on one show. Let’s just say things worked out quite well that night.

Adrienne Houghton (singing): Everybody cut, everybody cut, everybody cut, everybody cut, everybody cut footloose.”

The third season of “I Can See Your Voice” premieres Wednesday at 8 p.m., right here on 7.

Films to look forward to in 2024 https://wsvn.com/entertainment/films-to-look-forward-to-in-2024/ Tue, 02 Jan 2024 01:03:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1395966 Everybody’s making plans for the new year. You’d better leave time for some serious movie-watching.

A bunch of big films are coming out in 2024 and Rotten Tomatoes has the lowdown on them for you right now.

Dune Part 2

Are you ready for “Dune 2?”

It’s one of Rotten Tomatoes’ can’t miss movies of the new year. And there’s plenty more where that came from.

Naz Perez: “I’m so happy to be here and talk to you guys about the most anticipated films of 2024 on RottenTomatoes.com. It’s a list you guys can reference all throughout the year if you don’t know what to watch.”

We know we’ll be watching the sequel to “Dune.” It’s due in March and it sounds amazing.

Nat Paz: “It’s one of the most star-studded films coming out next year. Timothée Chalamet is back as Paul Atreides. He’s reuniting with Zendaya’s Chani, his love interest, to seek revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.”

Gladiator 2″

Russell Crowe as Maximus in “Gladiator”: “Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”

That’s a clip from the original “Gladiator,” back in 2000. There’s no trailer yet for the sequel. That’s because “Gladiator 2” won’t be out until November.

Naz Perez: “Which I am so excited to see. It stars Pedro Pascal, Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, I mean talk about a trifecta.”

We won’t be seeing Russell Crowe or Joaquin Phoenix this time around. But a very important player is coming back.

Naz Perez: “Ridley Scott, who directed the first one, is directing this one, which I’m really excited about.”

“Inside Out 2”

A new emotion joins the party in “Inside Out 2,” scheduled for a June release.

Reilly turns 13 in the animated sequel. The innocence of childhood is starting to fade.

Naz Perez: “But this time, they added a new character called anxiety. I just love that Disney and Pixar are tackling this topic because I feel like a lot of us as a collective have just felt anxiety or just heard of anxiety in the last three years, and seeing a Pixar film in theaters is like free therapy.”

Mean Girls”

“Mean Girls” hits theaters next month. It’s a special kind of movie.

Naz Perez: “Is this a sequel, is this a prequel? I’m here to tell you it’s neither. This film is not a remake of the original and it’s also not a straight adaptation of the broadway musical. It’s a mix and a hybrid of both, which I think is really cool.”

Grammy-nominated comedian Nate Bargatze to ring in 2024 with big show at Amerant Bank Arena https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/grammy-nominated-comedian-nate-bargatze-to-ring-in-2024-with-big-show-at-amerant-bank-arena/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 01:48:30 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1395439 Whoever said nice guys finish last has never met Nate Bargatze. Deco talked with the down-to-earth comedian before his big gig in SoFlo this weekend.

Nate Bargatze, comedian: “I’m 44. My daughter’s 11. When she’s my age, it’ll be 2057. I don’t even believe that’s a real year.”

Nate Bargatze has a favorite comedy target: the people he loves the most.

Nate Bargatze: “So I try to make fun of myself or my family, You know, we’re kind of the butt of the jokes. People can tell that, like, I love my wife and I love my family”

His self-deprecating style has earned him the title of “the nicest guy in stand-up.” It’s a label he’s proud of.

Nate Bargatze: “I don’t think I set out to be it but, you know, I wasn’t gonna – it’s one of those, I’m not gonna fight it, so I’m glad that I’m perceived as that.”

There’s a reason why he’s the butt of so many of his own jokes.

Nate Bargatze: “I enjoy doing it this way. I think I can go the farthest, and I’m just keeping it. It’s easier to write when you’re making fun of yourself. We’re doing homework. Our daughter’s starting to bring it all home. First and second grade was awesome. Third grade you’re like, ‘OK,’ then throw some stuff in, you’re like, ‘Oh, OK.'”

The Grammy-nominated performer has been making people laugh for two decades. He thinks now is a golden time for his profession.

Nate Bargatze: “And stand-up is, you know, it’s not completely there, but it’s close to being there, more than it ever has been, to be looked at as an art form. It’s a Golden Globe Award this year. People have more eyes on it than they ever have.”

Like most comics, Bargatze started out playing clubs. Now his “Be Funny” tour is packing arenas.

Those gigs are two different animals.

Nate Bargatze: “An arena, it’s bigger, things can be a little slower, you can sit on stuff a little longer ’cause there’s so many people.”

But things move a lot faster when you’re onstage in a packed club.

Nate Bargatze: “Where you just gotta be just kinda like on top of it and get to the jokes a lot quicker.”

Punch lines are going to be flying around the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise on Sunday, when Bargatze and his pals ring in 2024, laughing style.

Nate Bargatze: “We’re very excited to come down there for New Year’s Eve. That show, it’s gonna be an awesome show. I mean, I will say it’s one of the better comedy shows you could possibly see.”

Nate Bargatze: “How am I gonna talk to somebody from 2057? I have more in common with a Pilgrim.”

Here’s your chance to welcome 2024 in between big-time laughs.

Emmy Squared Pizza opens new spot in Fort Lauderdale bringing Detriot-style twist to South Florida
Baoshi Food Hall + Bar, new Pembroke Pines spot, houses 5 Asian restaurants under one roof https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/baoshi-food-hall-bar-new-pembroke-pines-spot-houses-5-asian-restaurants-under-one-roof/ Sat, 16 Dec 2023 02:54:54 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1391827 There’s lots of great Asian food to be had in Broward County, if you’re willing to look for it. You can spend hours searching for spots that serve up glorious grub — or you can go to a place that’s New in Town and has it all under one roof.

If you’re thinking of making it over to Baoshi Food Hall + Bar, here’s some good advice: keep your mind open and your stomach empty. You’re gonna have to make some tasty decisions before you chow down.

Filbert Ip: “Baoshi is the first Asian food hall in Pembroke Pines. We have five different restauants and also a full bar.”

This seems like the perfect time to reveal the culinary quintet.

Filbert Ip: “So the five restaurants that are within baoshi are Temple Street Eatery, GangNam Chickn, Gold Marquess, Poke OG and Boba Street Cafe.”

Each restaurant offers up its own specialty items. No matter what you’re up for, you can find it here.

Filbert Ip: “Variety is what we offer here at Baoshi and, of course, it’s an Asian cuisine, but within the Asian cuisine, there’s so many different options, and that was the purpose of opening this food hall.”

You can get a massive bowl of ramen, a bunch of steamed dumplings, sushi to die for, creative Cantonese creations or some bubbly boba tea.

And that’s not all.

Alex Kuk, Temple Street Eatery: “This brings culture — you get to have Chinese, Japanese, Korean drinks, food, desserts. It brings out excitement with energy.”

All that excitement and energy can make a person mighty thirsty. That’s where the bar comes in.

Filbert Ip: “So, at our full bar, people will be able to order Japanese whiskey, Suntory. They’ll also be able to order sake. We have many flights available from sake, as well as draft beer.”

Another cool area is the little marketplace.

Filbert Ip: “Once you walk in our food hall, the first thing you’ll see is our market, which we sell some candies that are from Asia, imported from Asia. We also sell some plants that you can take home.”

Baoshi is happy to bring Asian flavors to the folks in South Florida.

Filbert Ip: “I thought that it would be nice to explore that avenue and share this type of cuisine with the local crowd.”

Diner: “I think it’s great. There’s so many different places to choose from.”

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-370/ Sat, 16 Dec 2023 02:22:26 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1391810 Christmas is coming early for movie fans. A half-dozen films are yours for the viewing this nasty, dreary weekend. You’ll get a taste of all of ’em, because that’s exactly what’s coming on this week’s Showtime.

Mark Wahlberg (as Dan Morgan): “Before I met your mom, I was a covert assassin. I escaped that life, and now they found us.”

Van Crosby (as Kyle Morgan): “Dad, you are like the biggest wimp on the planet.”

Mark Wahlberg has some surprises in store for his family in “The Family Plan.” Hey, it’s bound to make the ride a lot more interesting.

Ben Foster (as Tom): “We’re going to Canadian waters.”

Ismael Cruz Cordova (as Costa): “What happens if we get caught?”

Ben Foster (as Tom): “Getting caught is not an option.”

But they do get caught, and that’s just the start of a family’s downward cycle in “Finestkind.” Ben Foster and Jenna Ortega star in it.

Dermot Mulroney (as Harry): “Before I leave tonight, I’m definitely breaking your right arm.”

Mauricio Mendoza (as Tom): “I dare you.”

[Harry breaks Tom’s arm.]

Dermot Mulroney (as Harry): “See you at school, kiddo.”

You don’t want to get Dermot Mulroney mad. “Ruthless” is story of a troubled high school coach, played by Dermot, who takes on sex traffickers after they kidnap his student.

Dan Thiel (as Justin): “You all right?”

Isabel Cueva (as Val): “Yeah, just got dizzy.

Isabel Cueva (as Val): “Is there something I should know about this house?”

Chris Browning (as Frank Scathrowe): “No.”

He’s lying. The house in question in “Angel Baby” was the site of something horrible … and there’s unfinished business to take care of.

Emile Hirsch (as Walden Dean): “You should never have gotten away with what you did.Quite frankly, sir, you have to pay for that.”

Character in “Walden”: “Let me go!”

Emile Hirsch is “Walden.” He’s a dying court stenographer who’s out to punish people who got away with some terrible crimes.

Thandiwe Newton (as Ginger, voice): “The truck’s taking chickens to some kind of farm.”

Zachary Levi (as Rocky, voice): “Well, hey, that doesn’t look so bad.”

The wait is over. “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” is the sequel to 2000’s “Chicken Run.” Was it worth it? You bet! Stop-motion animation has never been lovelier … or more fowl.

Thandiwe Newton (as Ginger, voice): “Last time we broke out of a chicken farm. Well, this time we’re breaking in.”

Jason Momoa, ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ co-stars talk about reprising roles in action-packed sequel https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/jason-momoa-aquaman-and-the-lost-kingdom-co-stars-talk-about-reprising-roles-in-action-packed-sequel/ Fri, 15 Dec 2023 03:13:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1391438 Things are about to get wet, and I’m not just talking about the weather. “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is almost here. The stars told Deco what to expect from their newest wet and wild film, so get ready to take the plunge.

Patrick Wilson (as Orm/Ocean Master): “We need to find Manta.”

Jason Momoa (as Arthur Curry/Aquaman): “He’s different now. He’s stronger than before. It’s the Black Trident.”

There’s plenty going on above and below the surface in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.”

Big changes have taken place since 2018’s “Aquaman,” especially for the film’s star, Jason Momoa.

Jason Momoa: “A lot has happened. I am king now, and I have a lot of responsibilities — not only to my family, but to the Kingdom of Atlantis.”

This time around, Jason’s character, Arthur Curry, does indeed have a full plate. Besides his royal duties, he’s a daddy.

Jason Momoa (as Arthur Curry/Aquaman): “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Playing a papa was a big kick for Jason.

Jason Momoa: “It’s one of the better parts of the script that I love the most, ’cause you just get to see him being a dad, which I like being a dad and a husband.”

The film does have its lighter moments.

Patrick Wilson (as Orm/Ocean Master): “A true king builds bridges, right?

[Aquaman topples a statue, turning it into a bridge.]

Jason Momoa (as Arthur Curry/Aquaman): “A true king builds bridges.”

Nobody’s laughing when Black Manta returns.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (as David Kane/Black Manta): “I’m gonna kill Aquaman and destroy everything he holds dear. I’m gonna murder his family and burn his kingdom to ash.”

Yahya Abdul Mateen II is back as Aquaman’s nemesis. He’s still coming for the king of the sea but this time, he’s not coming alone.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II: “Black Manta still has this mission of finding Aquaman, destroying Aquaman, so he spent a lot of time, a lot of resources building together and putting together a badass crew.”

The ruler of the ocean won’t be going into battle by himself. He gets back together with his half-brother Orm, the former ruler of Atlantis.

Their reunion gets off to a rough start.

Jason Momoa (as Arthur Curry/Aquaman): “Good job, little brother. High-five.”

Patrick Wilson (as Orm/Ocean Master): “Do not call me brother.”

For Patrick Wilson, returning for Round 2 of the “Aquaman” saga was a chance to kick it up a few notches.

Patrick Wilson: “Look, you come back for a sequel, you want to make it bigger and better and funnier and darker and more emotional. With our stunts, you want them even bigger and bolder.”

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” swims into theaters Dec. 22.

Chef Anthony Vitolo opens first South Florida eatery ‘Vitolo’ at Conrad Hotel in Fort Lauderdale https://wsvn.com/entertainment/chef-anthony-vitolo-opens-first-south-florida-eatery-vitolo-at-conrad-hotel-in-fort-lauderdale/ Wed, 13 Dec 2023 01:00:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1390619 These days, all eyes are on Taylor Swift. That’s truth.

Even her choice of restaurants makes news. So when one of her very favorite New York city chef’s opened his first South Florida spot, we had to check it out.

Chef Anthony Vitolo is the talent behind “Vitolo,” the Conrad hotel’s latest addition to the Fort Lauderdale food scene.

Anthony Vitolo: “‘Vitolo’ is a family restaurant here in Fort Lauderdale that is bringing our traditional family recipes from New York.”

Chef’s Manhattan eatery is called “Emilio’s Ballato.” It’s a celebrity hot spot, with top shelf Italian food lovers like Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade, Tracy Morgan, Al Pacino and Owen Wilson is also popping in sometimes.

Taylor Swift was turned on to it by a celebrity friend.

Anthony Vitolo: “Sophie Turner, she’s been coming in for five six years and she brought Taylor Swift as part of her party.”

This was no one-night fling. Taylor dug it so much, she brought her bff’s.

Anthony Vitolo: “Taylor obviously loved the food and she just wanted to come back for a girl’s night with all her girlfriends.”

What’s not to love. Neapolitan-Italian cuisine doesn’t get more authentic than this.

Anthony Vitolo: “Neapolitan is simple ingredients but the best ingredients like simple San Marzano tomatoes, good olive oil, good pasta.”

You want good pasta? Dig into a bowl of this bad boy.

Anthony Vitolo: “I have a tagliatelle bolognese, which is a pork veal and beef ragu that I cook for seven hours, slowly cooked.”

There’s also a massive chicken parmigiana, veal chop parmigiana and chef Anthony’s take on an old favorite.

Anthony Vitolo: “Like basically, it’s an Italian-American grilled cheese but fried and then you have mozzarella cheese inside, and you serve it with tomato sauce.”

The kitchen’s not the only place where the magic goes down.

The folks at the bar can be very crafty when it comes to making cocktails.

Anthony Vitolo: “So one of our top sellers is Emilio’s Manhattan, which is a tribute to my father. It’s a whisky drink that’s smoked in cherry oak.”

If that’s not your style, try the lena limon-a.

Anthony Vitolo: “It’s made with eleven vodka. It’s basically a lemon drop martini.”

Don’t expect any bells and whistles at Vitolo. You’re getting the kind of food that’s honest and tasty.

Just ask Taylor Swift.

Anthony Vitolo: “And Italian food is meant to be simple. It’s not meant to be complicated. Simple ingredients like I said but done the right way.”

Jesslyn Wade: “The food, the ingredients, you can tell it was very fresh and it’s made with lots of love.”

Fort Lauderdale lawyer talks about competing on Netflix’s ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/fort-lauderdale-lawyer-talks-about-competing-on-netflixs-squid-game-the-challenge/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 00:51:12 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1385480 Being a lawyer, we understand, is a daily challenge on the brain. You have to use all your skills up there to get the job done.

One local legal eagle did just that, but instead of a courtroom, he showed his stuff on “Squid Game: The Challenge.”

Chad Van Horn: “Don’t consume yourself with unnecessary stress from debt. If you’re dealing with any debt-related issues, Van Horn Law Group has you covered.”

We know what you’re thinking, “what’s bankruptcy attorney Chad Van Horn doing on Deco?

What if we told you this was the reason.

Chad made the cut.

He’s one of 456 players on the Netflix reality show, “Squid Game: The Challenge.”

We sat down with number 286 in his Fort Lauderdale office and found out how this entire experience happened.

Chad Van Horn: “I sent in a one-minute video. I’m like, ‘There’s no way they’re gonna pick me. I’m a bankruptcy attorney in Fort Lauderdale. Who wants to see me on the show?’ And I got a phone call.”

Getting accepted to the show, that was the easy part.

Chad Van Horn: “They said that I could be gone for weeks. No internet, no cellphone, no TV, and I need to speak to my employer, which I needed to speak to the people in my office and my family.”

Chad shouldn’t have worried. Everyone he cared about was totally behind him.

Chad Van Horn: “I got really nervous towards the end and almost backed out, but luckily, my wife, my work family, my mom, it was like, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, make sure that you go.”

So he went and tried to win the $4.5 million prize.

The weeks Chad spent on the London set weren’t exactly what you’d call a tourist’s dream.

Chad Van Horn: “They told us to expect that we weren’t gonna have the best food or sleeping arrangements and we should get used to that, and wean ourselves off caffeine.”

Things got off to a bang, pardon the pun, with the first competition; Red Light, Green Light.

Nope. Nobody gets shot during the game, but that doesn’t mean it was easy-peasy.

Chad Van Horn: “Red Light, Green Light actually started off really rough for me because one of my friends that lined up next to me, he was one of the first to go out and basically it was too cold in there for him. His knees locked up and he fell.”

Chad has nothing but respect for his fellow players.

Chad Van Horn: “I saw incredible people, anywhere from 18 years old to 70 years old, finish this and really, not only was it physically, but mentally taxing.”

Coming home with the big money would be amazing, but whatever the result, Chad already feels like a winner.

Chad Van Horn: “This was some of the biggest surprises in the game for me, is the relationships that I built. These are lifelong relationships.”

Episodes six through nine of “Squid Games: The Challenge” are set to drop on Wednesday on Netflix.

2nd Pompano Beach Drone Show Extravaganza to take over skies above Fisher Family Pier https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/2nd-pompano-beach-drone-show-extravaganza-to-take-over-skies-above-fisher-family-pier/ Sat, 11 Nov 2023 05:28:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380066 This weekend, Pompano Beach is gonna be lit. The sky over the ocean will be filled with lights — and not the kind supplied by stars. Drones will dance above your head, and you will be thoroughly amazed.

Man in “Superman” show: “Look up in the sky! It’s a bird!”

Woman in “Superman” show: “It’s a plane!”

It most certainly is not. It’s the second annual Pompano Beach Drone Show Extravaganza at Fisher Family Pier.

Sandra King: “It’s a night of family fun, cool entertrainment.”

This Saturday’s event is bound to be twice as nice as last year.

Sandra King: “We added a show, so we have two shows, one at 7 p.m., one at 9 p.m.”

You want more? You got it. More shows, more lights.

Sandra King: “Not only are we doubling up on shows, but we’ve added another 100 drones to each show. It was 200 drones, which was amazing. Now it’s gonna be 300 drones. It is such a cool thing to watch.”

Getting the full impact will require getting your eyes and ears involved.

Sandra King: “And it’s all choreographed to music. It’s a futuristic music.”

There’s a special theme to this year’s show. Actually, there are two themes that are sharing the evening.

Sandra King: “Because we’re doing the drone show annually on Veterans Day, or Veterans Day weekend, basically, we decided this year it was going to be a patriotic theme, mixed in with a nautical theme.”

But not all the entertainment will be going down over your head.

Sandra King: “We are putting a band on the pier and a DJ, so starting at 5:30, people can get here early and enjoy the vibe, listen to the music.”

Don’t worry. You and yours won’t be hungry.

Sandra King: “People can eat right here in the Fishing Village. We have restaurants like Oceanic, where we’re at now, right on the ocean. We have Beach House, we have Lucky Fish.”

Here’s a important tip. If you want to really see the light show in all its glory, listen up.

Sandra King: “Three hundred drones are all staged north of the pier. They’re on tarps, and they go out over the ocean and over the pier, and then they face south, so everybody needs to be south of the pier to get a good look at this incredible drone show.”

Zen Mystery, cafe and cultural event center in Dania Beach, invites you to chill and unwind https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/zen-mystery-cafe-and-cultural-event-center-in-dania-beach-invites-you-to-chill-and-unwind/ Thu, 09 Nov 2023 05:33:22 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1379327 We all have plenty on our plates these days. Sometimes you just need to chill and unload. There’s a South Florida spot that knows how to help you do exactly that … and how they do it is no mystery.

Not many local places have songs written about them. Then again, Zen Mystery isn’t like most places.

Denis Soukhanov: “Zen Mystery is a community space where we host a bunch of eclectic events, from spiritual to cultural to musical.”

This husband-and-wife operation has been a fixture on the Dania Beach scene for over a decade. It’s come a long way since its early days.

Denis Soukhanov: “We didn’t really know what we were doing, so originally, it was supposed to be a little yoga meditation spot, and it kind of evolved over time to people from all walks of life supporting art, original art.”

You’re guaranteed to decompress before the work week gets too heavy.

Denis Soukhanov: “We start the week with Monday night yoga, then we continue into Wednesday meditation.”

You can unblock your chakras and pick up some tchotchkes while you’re there.

Denis Soukhanov: “We just offer people small gifts — crystals, little knickknacks from all over the world. We have a lot of books, people come play games, too.”

Games aren’t the only things people play at Zen. The place is known for its Friday open mic night.

You might hear some heartfelt poetry…

Poet: “You’re my lost love, I don’t know if I’ll ever find you again.”

Check out a sensitive singer-songwriter…

Matthew Auerbach: “I think of you by candlelight, when memory grows soft.”

Even a tune about the Corleone family isn’t out of the question.

Singer-songwriter: “Singing about the Godfather blues.”

Denis Soukhanov: “It’s all local, original acts. It’s amazing.”

Food also plays a big part in Zen’s identity.

Denis Soukhanov: “And we do offer organic, gluten-free cuisine. We might be the longest-running vegan restaurant in Broward and Dade County.”

There are dishes here that demand your attention.

Denis Soukhanov: “People say we have one of the best vegan pad thais in the world — top five, somebody said. Now we just added vegan crab cakes.”

Do not — I repeat, do not — leave without trying their special dessert. They won’t serve you a piece of vegan pie they wouldn’t eat themselves.

Denis Soukhanov: “We only make what we like, because if the people don’t eat it, we’ve gotta eat it, so we only offer the best.”

Irina Samarkina: “I love it, and I love the atmosphere. It feels like home, and it’s so chill and relaxing.”

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/showtime-365/ Wed, 08 Nov 2023 00:47:12 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378795 What goes on in the mind of a murderer, the results of a wish gone wrong, the journey of history’s most famous parents and sisterhood is truly powerful.

All this, and more, is coming your way on this week’s Showtime.

The Marvels

Girls may rule the world, but “The Marvels” can save the universe.

Brie Larson’s back as Captain Marvel in this latest MCU offering that proves three super-powered females are better than one.

“It’s a Wonderful Knife”

“It’s a Wonderful Knife” is just the kind of Christmas slasher movie you’ve been waiting for. The film’s a gory retelling of the holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” — except this time around, angels don’t get their wings, they get cut to pieces.

“Journey to Bethlehem”

The story of Joseph and Mary and the birth of Jesus Christ is retold with lots of music in “Journey to Bethlehem.” You hear a mix of modern pop songs and classic Christmas melodies as you watch the greatest story ever told.

“Rumble Through the Dark”

Just when Aaron Eckhart thinks he’s through fighting, he gets pulled back in. “Rumble Through the Dark” is the story of one man’s struggle to save his family home.
Bella Thorne co-stars.

“The Killer”

Being a murderer for hire takes a certain mindset. Michael Fassbender has it down in spades. In “The Killer,” he plays a hit man on a mission to right a job gone wrong.

Dance to the beat all night long at Kemistry Nightclub in Fort Lauderdale https://wsvn.com/entertainment/dance-to-the-beat-all-night-long-at-kemistry-nightclub-in-fort-lauderdale/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 01:03:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378492 This is music to our ears. A new club has opened its doors in SoFlo.

In this joint, the beat goes on forever and the party never ends. It’s a perfect example of what happens when you create the right “Kemistry.”

Fort Lauderdale night life just got a big shot in the arm. Kemistry Nightclub is ready to do business.

Angel Candelaria: “Kemistry Nightclub is the newest nightclub in Fort Lauderdale. We’re very focused on electronic music.”

The guys in charge really know what you want when it comes to late-night action.

Angel Candelaria: “What’s gonna separate us is our attention to detail since all the partners are promoters, we’re all about the experience customers will have an immersive experience.”

Other clubs play electronic dance music, but you’ve never heard or felt EDM the way you will at Kemistry.

Angel Candelaria: “Our sound lights and production is the best in Fort Lauderdale, bar none.

Kemistry was created to shine a spotlight on EDM and return it to its former glory as the music of the night.

Angel Candelaria: “That is what my partners and I we all love, we’ve been doing it for a lot of years and we feel like Fort Lauderdale needs a club that is more focused on that than anything else. But lately, it has kinda fallen off so we feel like we can bring that back.”

The idea is to make the Fort Lauderdale music scene as good, if not better, than its neighbor to the south.

Angel Candelaria: “I think Miami has kind of taken the reins for electronic music now and the Fort Lauderdale thing kinda fell off. The people in Broward are dying for a place where they don’t have to drive to go hear world-class deejays.”

You’ll dance, you’ll party, you’ll drink. There are specialty cocktails waiting for you here.

Angel Candelaria: “The Big Bang is our mango margarita with tequila and fresh ingredients. The Pink Molecule has Mezcal, cilantro and watermelon.”

They also offer up a smokey concoction named after a notorious television character.

Angel Candelaria: “The Walter White contains gin fresh cucumber and fresh mint.”

Whether you brave it out on the dance floor or hang out upstairs above the action, you’ll get the Kemistry Nightclub experience full-on.

Angel Candelaria: “Our venue, it may seem large, but it’s very intimate. Also, no matter where you are in the club, you get to have a good sight line of the deejay, you’ll get to hear the deejay and you’ll be close enough where you can feel like you’re part of the party.”

Meg Ryan steps behind the camera and stars in new rom-com ‘What Happens Later’ opposite David Duchovny https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/meg-ryan-steps-behind-the-camera-and-stars-in-new-rom-com-what-happens-later-opposite-david-duchovny/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 01:28:20 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377427 Meg Ryan is back where she belongs: starring in a romantic comedy.

Meg shares the screen with David Duchovny in “What Happens Later.” Deco sat down with the pair, who play ex-lovers given the chance by Mother Nature to revisit their relationship.

David Duchovny (as Bill): “How’ve you been?”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “Oh, for the last 20 years?”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “Twenty-five, maybe.”

You never know who you’ll bump into in an airport. In “What Happens Later,” former couple Meg Ryan and David Duchovny run into each other and are stranded when a massive storm grounds their flights.

Airport employee on intercom: “Attention, Boston and Austin passengers. Those flights have been delayed until further notice.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “Just those two flights?”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “Just us.”

Airport employee on intercom: “Yes.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “That’s…”

Meg Ryan (as Willa) and David Duchovny (as Bill): “Unbelievable.”

The film marks Meg’s return to acting after an eight-year break, and it was this story that pulled her back in.

Meg Ryan: “I feel like maybe there’s maybe some kind of universal fantasy about it — someone from long ago, you have some unresolved stuff with, you’re stuck with them. Will you resolve those things or not?”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “When people break up, there’s the thing that they tell each other, and then there’s the truth, which you never told me.”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “I was in love with you, and I couldn’t turn that on and off like a switch.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “I know.”

Meg was originally brought in to direct the movie, which she did. She was searching for the perfect actress for the role of Willa. Then she looked in the mirror.

Meg Ryan: “I tried not to cast myself like crazy, but then I had to. But thankfully I did, because then I was, ‘Who would I be good with?’ And I thought of David.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “Relax. You’re already living out your worst-case scenario.”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “What, being stuck here with you?”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “Yeah.”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “You make a good point.”

“What Happens Later” is basically a dialogue between Meg and David, who plays Bill.

David told Deco he knew it would be a challenge to make this work.

David Duchovny: “I said yes to Meg, you know. I said yes to the script, it was all good, and then I realized, ‘Holy hell, it really is just us two having a conversation for the whole movie. That’s gonna be a ballsy thing to try to pull off.'”

But pull it off they did … and David gives Meg a ton of credit for always keeping the conversation moving.

David Duchovny: “And I think that Meg as a director, doing the pace of it, creating the pace, was able to do that.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “I’ve been 49 forever and ever and ever.”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “Wow, lucky you. I feel like I’ve been in my 50s since my 20s.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “That’s so true.”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “You don’t have to agree with me.”

We had to ask Meg and David one question: who would you most like to be stuck with in an airport?

David Duchovny: “Overnight? A pilot.”

Meg Ryan (laughing): “David Duchovny.”

“What Happens Later” flies into theaters this weekend.

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “If we could see our memories in advance, would we do anything different?”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “Please don’t ruin this.”

Tasty bargain: Sérêvène in Miami Beach is extending Miami Spice dinner deal https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/tasty-bargain-serevene-in-miami-beach-is-extending-miami-spice-dinner-deal/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 02:36:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377111 SoFlo foodies are ecstatic when Miami Spice rolls around … and really sad to see it go. It’s hard to say goodbye to one of the best dining deals in town.

Good news! One South Beach restaurant thinks Spice is so nice, they’re keeping it around for a little longer.

Sérêvène, the French-Japanese fusion eatery in the Hotel Greystone, just can’t let go of Miami Spice.

Cullen Santos: “We’re extending the opportunity for more locals and new diners to come and visit and experience our cuisine.”

Extending the $60 meal deal through November was a no-brainer for the restaurant. They knew they had something worth repeating.

Cullen Santos: “Given that the reviews that we had, the interaction with our guests at the tables, a lot of, like I said, the locals that came here, their expression overall saying that they really enjoyed the experience.”

This is a perfect opportunity to feast on the foods of award-winning Chef Pawan Pinisetti, or, as he’s known by the staff. Chef P.

You can taste Chef P’s vision in every bite.

Cullen Santos: “And this goes around Chef P’s cuisine, which is simplicity done right. It’s very inticate, but yet fun.”

Intricate simplicity. That pretty much describes your choices that are going to come out of the kitchen, starting with the green pea bisque cappuccino.

Cullen Santos: “Which we’ll warm up, put into a rocks glass, and we’ll put a scoop of minted peas in there, which is a blend of peas, mint, onions.”

That’s topped with a light Alfredo sauce.

Once you’ve downed that, you can dig into an old favorite: beef tartare.

Cullen Santos: “But it’s our take on beef tartare.”

It’s made tableside with chives, red onion, caper berries and garlic aioli.

Or you can go for a forkful of roasted cauliflower in green curry sauce.

What comes next — well, that’s going to knock you out.

Cullen Santos: “Then we’ll do the lobster uni Alfredo: bucatini pasta cooked al dente with butter-poached lobster claw and knuckle meat.”

With a crown of black caviar and sitting in a lake of light Alfredo sauce, it’s heaven on a plate.

The ending of your evening is sweet: foie crème brûlée, fired up to perfection.

Sérêvène’s Miami Spice deal is the tastiest bargain around.

Andrea: “Everything, really, was put together really well. There’s a lot of flavors and things that I wouldn’t naturally expect to go together, and somehow it worked.”

Chelsea Baum: “I think it’s amazing that you’re able to do a date night and do Miami Spice, and I’m so excited that they decided to continue to do it.”

Exclusive Manhattan restaurant Rao’s gives South Beach a taste of authentic Italian cuisine https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/exclusive-manhattan-restaurant-raos-gives-south-beach-a-taste-of-authentic-italian-cuisine/ Wed, 25 Oct 2023 00:14:45 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1374443 There are some restaurants that are so popular, it’s almost impossible to get a table — even if you know a guy, who knows a guy, who says he knows the owner. You know how that goes.

A legendary New York Italian eatery with a waiting list longer than Interstate 95 has opened its doors in SoFlo. Quick, everybody mangia!

What do stars like Jimmy Fallon, Fran Drescher and Sting have in common? They’re all famous enough to have eaten at Rao’s in Manhattan.

Salvatore Viscomi: “To get in is impossible if you don’t know someone. If you don’t know someone, and that someone’s got a table that will call for you, you won’t be eating here soon in New York.”

But you won’t have to worry about that, now that Rao’s has settled into the St. Moritz Tower at Loews Miami Beach.

Salvatore Viscomi: “So it’s the perfect opportunity to get a reservation down in South Beach.”

Up north, the 127-year-old restaurant has to be exclusive — it only has 10 tables.

You won’t lose that feeling of intimacy down here.

Salvatore Viscomi: “We treat all our guests as family members in here. You really feel at home.”

Roseline: “I’ve always been dying to go to this restaurant, and the fact that it’s open here finally in the Miami location, I’m very thrilled.”

You’ll be thrilled at what’s offered up here. When it comes to Italian cooking, this is as authentic as it gets.

Salvatore Viscomi: “They’ve always kept their original recipes, their traditional ,simple food, South Neapolitan food, and they’ve always done great service, great ambiance.”

The chicken parm, the pasta with clams and Rao’s famous “meatball” are three of the signature dishes that made it down from the Big Apple.

The seafood tower is something they came up with just for the South Beach location.

Salvatore Viscomi: “We got the lobster, crab, oysters, you can’t miss out on.”

Your appetite for cocktails has been well attended to.

Try a negroni or a coffee martini to get your night started.

Salvatore Viscomi: “So we have amazing cocktails, craft cocktails from our great bartender here.”

OK, so we’ve established that celebrities get into Rao’s pretty easily. Their photos line the walls here.

But that hasn’t worked for everyone.

Salvatore Viscomi: “Keep in mind that Leonardo DiCaprio had to call someone else to get a table in New York. True fact.”

At Rao’s Miami Beach, there’s enough room and enough food for everyone.

Brandon: “Very rich, very flavorful. It was great to get a chance to experience a very historic restaurant that’s outside of New York City for once.”

Rao’s Miami Beach is now officially open for business. Reservations are highly recommended.

Dress in your best costume for the Headless Horseman Halloween Party at Gulfstream Park https://wsvn.com/entertainment/dress-in-your-best-costume-for-the-headless-horseman-halloween-party-at-gulfstream-park/ Mon, 23 Oct 2023 23:31:23 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1374085 Getting ready for Halloween can make someone lose their minds. The costumes, the candy, the parties, it’s a lot to take on.

But one guy’s actually lost his head over the spooky soiree and he’s coming to Hallandale Beach to find a new one. Maybe yours.

The Headless Horseman is the guest of honor at Gulfstream Park’s Halloween party on Oct. 28.

Alex Schreer: “Headless Horseman Halloween is a safe and fun environment without the neighborhood trick or treating.”

Actually, you will see your neighbors at the event, if you can recognize them.

Alex Schreer: “So we’re able to close our streets, bring in everyone in the entire neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods to come in and have a great time all in their costumes.”

And you won’t be able to miss a certain fella on horseback.

Alex Schreer: “The Headless Horseman is really our main event.”

He won’t be hard to find.

Alex Schreer: “The Headless Horseman will come through the village and he’ll make some passes. He’s looking for someone else’s head to replace his that was taken unfairly.”

While he’s searching for a head, you’ll be happily filling up on the sweet stuff.

Alex Schreer: “We have six candy stations, over two thousand pounds of candy. At each of the candy stations, it’s all free.”

Your eyes and ears will be hard at work taking everything in.

Alex Schreer: “We have a lot of lighting, we have a lot of sound, so you’re gonna see a lot of dark lights, bright lights, orange lights and really decorate the park, so it’s really gonna be a nice scene.”

Don’t take your Halloween costume for granted, it could get you a really nice pay day.

Alex Schreer: “We have a thousand dollars up to a thousand in different cash prizes. So we start with the children and we go all the way to the adults so come dressed come ready for a great evil costume contest.”

To really get into the Halloween spirit, make it on over to Gulfstream for their annual happening.

Alex Schreer: “This is the one that people want to come to. It is a scene, it is a place to be seen in your costume.”

Speaking of costumes, the folks at Gulfstream had a question for me and Shireen.

Alex Schreer: “What are you wearing this Halloween and are you coming?”

The Headless Horseman Halloween is open to the public and free to attend.

It runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Instrumental rock band Violectric to bring blend of classical and contemporary styles to Pompano Beach Cultural Arts Center https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/instrumental-rock-band-violectric-to-bring-blend-of-classical-and-contemporary-styles-to-pompano-beach-cultural-arts-center/ Sat, 21 Oct 2023 01:30:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1373410 There’s classical music, and then there’s pop music. Two different styles with two different fan bases … but don’t tell that to Violectric. The instrumental group is mixing the two genres and bringing their special sound to SoFlo.

The hits of The Who, Fleetwood Mac and Bruce Springsteen. Their music and hits from other legendary artists are coming together in a new light, thanks to Violectric.

Michelle Jones: “Violectric is a string rock band, it’s all instrumental, and there are no vocals, no guitars. Everything is covered by one of the people you see in this picture.”

Their repertoire is constantly expanding from suggestions by the players — and the fans who listen to them.

Michelle Jones: “A lot of it comes from the band members — they say, ‘Ooh, I think we should play this song,’ ‘OK, let’s play that song’ — and then some of it comes from the audience. We love hearing from our fans.”

Using classical instruments for contemporary music may have seemed strange years ago. But not anymore.

Michelle Jones: “I think that as times and technology have evolved, so has the need for different instruments and musicians and where they belong.”

A Violectric show is not just for your ears only. There’s a lot to see, as well.

Michelle Jones: “There is a light show that goes with it, it goes with the stage lighting, it goes with the instruments. Our bows light up, our instruments light up, our harp lights up.”

Be prepared to get up close and personal with the members of Violectric. They will literally bring the music right to you.

Michelle Jones: “We are wireless, and we can actually come stroll and walk out into the audience and interact with the guests while we’re there.”

Violectric will be performing at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center next Thursday, Oct. 26.

‘Nyad,’ starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster, brings inspiring true story of long-distance swimmer to the screen https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/nyad-starring-annette-bening-and-jodie-foster-brings-inspiring-true-story-of-long-distance-swimmer-to-the-screen/ Thu, 19 Oct 2023 23:53:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1373029 For most people, going for a swim means doing a few laps in the pool. Diana Nyad is not most people.

Annette Bening stars as the marathon swimmer in “Nyad.” Jodie Foster plays her best friend and trainer who helps her fulfill a lifelong dream.

Jodie Foster (as Bonnie Stoll): “No, no, no. That’s insane, Diana. You tried that when you were 28, and you did not make it when you were 28. You’re 60.”

Annette Bening (as Diana Nyad): “I don’t believe in imposed limitations. The only one who gets to decide if I’m through is me.”

“Nyad” tells the story of long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad, who attempts to swim from Cuba to South Florida at age 60 after four failed attempts.

Annette Bening (as Diana Nyad): “OK, it’s just a little swim.”

Annette Bening plays the champion athlete who’s determined to show the world what she can do.

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi: “It’s a vehicle for understanding what this woman dreamt of and what she endured, and the journey she had to go on emotionally to almost be free enough to achieve her dream,”

Annette Bening (as Diana Nyad): “You said I needed something to get out of my funk.”

Jodie Foster (as Bonnie Stoll): “I meant you should sign up for speed dating or get a therapist.”

Jodie Foster is Bonnie Stoll, Nyad’s skeptical confidante and coach.

Diana knows there’s no way that she can get the job done without her BFF.

Annette Bening (as Diana Nyad): “I just know I can do it, and I couldn’t do it without you.”

Jodie Foster (as Bonnie Stoll): “All right, OK.”

Annette Bening (as Diana Nyad): “Ow, ow, owwwww!”

Bonnie Stoll: “Jodie and Annette just captured the essence of Diana and myself, really.”

Annette’s performance focuses on Diana’s battles with public perception. They think she’s a woman past her prime.

Annette Bening (as Diana Nyad): “I know the world wants me to shut my mouth and sit down and wait to die, but I can’t.”

Jimmy Chin: “I think both Chai and I were jaw-dropped and blown away at what she brought, that you see on screen. It was so real and so vulnerable.”

Of course, completing a 100-mile swim carries with it an ocean full of risks.

Annette Bening (as Diana Nyad): “We’re 60 hours of constant swimming, but what I’m most afraid of is sharks and man o’ war.”

The film is an ode to perseverance and the power of friendship.

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi: “It was seeing a woman in her full splendor and complexity, but also the depths of a chosen family, like the depths of a friendship that can exist.”

Jodie Foster (as Bonnie Stoll): “Diana, you got this! There’s no one more Nyad than you.”

“Nyad” hits theaters this weekend and will be available to stream on Netflix starting Nov. 3.

Spook yourself with John Carpenter’s ‘Suburban Screams’ series now on Peacock https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/spook-yourself-with-john-carpenters-suburban-screams-series-now-on-peacock/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 01:13:45 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1371918 Some people move to the suburbs to get away from the stress of city life and apparently, that could be a big mistake.

According to horror master John Carpenter’s new series, terror is hiding behind every corner of the ‘burbs.

You’ll never look at your comfy little crib the same way again, thanks to John Carpenter’s “Suburban Screams”.

John Carpenter: “People think of dark houses and dark places and scary stuff it’s places that we all live where the danger exists, that’s even scarier.”

The true-horror series isn’t simply the product of Carpenter’s spooky imagination.

John Carpenter: “The show’s a hybrid show it’s both scripted and unscripted.”

The stuff you’ll see actually happened to people. That’s what makes it extra scary.

John Carpenter: “True events that terrify communities and people.”

Carpenter personally directed an episode about a woman dealing with a phone stalker. She’s interviewed on camera.

Not every situation has a happy ending.

John Carpenter: “Everything is real and everything is based on what this woman went through and I suppose still going through. It’s not resolved by any means. That’s crazy, six years, six years this has been happening.”

When it comes to freaking audiences out, John Carpenter’s credits can’t be questioned.

He was the mastermind behind “the thing.”

Carpenter also introduced Michael Myers to the world in “Halloween”.

“Suburban Screams” gives him the chance to use real events to frighten the you-know-what out of viewers.

“I’ve never done anything like this before and it sounded really interesting to do.”

John Carpenter’s “Suburban Screams” is streaming on Peacock now.

Reggae legend Shaggy, soca king Kes debut new song ‘Mood,’ their first collab, ahead of Miami Carnival https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/reggae-legend-shaggy-soca-king-kes-debut-new-song-mood-their-first-collab-ahead-of-miami-carnival/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 03:59:53 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1368661 It’s time to party! Carnival’s coming to Miami this weekend. The music, the costumes, the food — they all celebrate Caribbean culture to the max.

Deco checked in with Shaggy and Kes — two guys who are all about keeping the island feeling going all year round.

“Mood” is the first collab between Shaggy and Kes.

The reggae legend and the soca king have been planning on working together for a long time. “Mood” is the song that made it happen.

Kes: “For one, this is exactly how I’m feeling, like, exactly what I’m feeling.”

To Shaggy, the vibe of the tune had to reflect this weekend’s big bash.

Shaggy: “When you think of Carnival, you think of smiles, you think of joy, you think of culture, you know what I mean? And I think, with this song, we really tried to capture all of that, which is the mood.”

It’s the mix of musical styles — reggae and soca — that gives “Mood” its unique feel.

Shaggy: “When Kes came aboard, he brought, you know, what was really needed to bring that soca element to it, to really bring it back to the vibe of what soca and Carnival music is about.”

Kes: “It’s a perfect blend between Jamaica and Trinidad, and I always said, you know, if a Jamaican and a Trini come together, that’s an unstoppable human being, so it’s always a good idea.”

It’s an even better idea when people from all over the islands get together in the Magic City for Carnival.

The best way to get pumped for the party? Put “Mood” on auto-repeat.

Kes: “I feel as if this song feels like Miami, like, the touch of the Caribbean, the touch of – ’cause we’re all there — Trinidad, Jamaica — everybody’s there in Miami, you know.”

Reach inner peace at Soulful Steep in Pompano Beach https://wsvn.com/entertainment/reach-inner-peace-at-soulful-steep-in-pompano-beach/ Mon, 02 Oct 2023 23:53:47 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1367534 “The world is too much with us.” The poet, William Wordsworth, said that.

“I am so stressed out, I need to chill.” I said that.

Luckily, Deco’s found a place where you can do just that. It’s cool, calm and extremely soulful.

Your inner hippie will rejoice at the Soulful Steep in Pompano Beach.

Christina Abresch: “So the Soulful Steep is a tea house, coffee house, salt cave and emporium. It’s a bohemian place to kind of escape from the world.”

Actually, it only came to be because of the owners’ experiences around the globe.

Christina Abresch: “We traveled all over the world and we found all these amazing places that when we stepped in, we kinda stepped out better human beings. So we wanted to give that to people. We thought the community needed it and we kinda wanted to enjoy it as well.”

The vibe of the place brings you back to a time when hippies took over.

Christina Abresch: “We’re all about peace and love and that was the whole 60s/70s movement and we really want every human who walks in here to feel really loved, really special and seen.”

What really sets the Steep apart its salt cave.

Christina Abresch: “This is a room with 8,000 pounds of Himalayan salt on the walls. People enjoy this room with eye pillows on, with blankets and they recline in these zero gravity chairs for 45 minutes.”

Stress doesn’t stand a chance when cave dwellers settle in.

Christina Abresch: “There’s calming music and we also do meditations in here.”

Once the cave has worked all its magic on you, it’s time for tea.

Christina Abresch: “We carry over fifty different organic teas. A lot of the time we make custom blends for people and we have single origin teas from Taiwan and China and Nepal.”

If you’re in the mood for a little something-something, the pastries are a must.

Christina Abresch: “All of our baked goods are made by local bakers. We don’t use any preservatives or any garbage.”

There’s a cute, little emporium right in the middle of the place. It’s part of the charm of the Steep.

Christina Abresch: “People have just fallen in love with the items.”

If the Soulful Steep has a mission, it’s to make people feel good so they can do good.

Christina Abresch: “The world is crazy nowadays and you have to find a place where you can really let go of that so you can go out in the world and create magic for yourself.

Tom Moore: “The people here are fantastic. Service is good man. It’s just a great place to chill out and have a cup of tea.”

If you want to experience the salt cave, and you know you do, you’ve got to book it in advance.

Songwriter Ivory Scott grabs the microphone with new single ‘Just Like Me’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/songwriter-ivory-scott-grabs-the-microphone-with-new-single-just-like-me/ Mon, 18 Sep 2023 23:57:48 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1360767 Some people are born to write, like Ivory Scott. The 27-year-old has written for some of the biggest names in pop. Now, he’s ready for his moment in the spotlight.

“Thique” by Beyoncé. “Peru” from Ed Sheeran and Fireboy DML. “Baddest” featuring 2 Chainz.

That trio of hits has one thing in common: They were all written by Ivory Scott.

Deco caught up with the music man at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach to find out about his big career move.

Ivory Scott: “I’ve been writing songs since I was a small child. Started writing songs when I was about 9 years old, and ever since, I’ve just been locked into it. I knew it was what I always wanted to do.”

Working with some of the mega-stars in music taught him an unexpected lesson.

Ivory Scott: “I find that the biggest stars are the most, like, friendliest people. Like, it’s the people that are, like, in the middle or about to become a big star that their head gets bigger.”

The connection for a successful collab has to be real.

There’s a definite method to the musical magic.

Ivory Scott: “Especially with the bigger artists, like, they have, like, you know, a list of things they want to talk about or that they don’t want to talk about or that song concepts that they want to express.”

One thing’s for sure: Success has made it easy for him to get gigs.

Ivory Scott: “You have records that come out, people hear those records, they want big records, everybody wants a big record in this business, so that’s what brings work to you.”

Speaking of records, Ivory just dropped his new single, “Just Like Me”, from up his upcoming EP, “Before Ebony.”

This is the first collection of songs to feature him as a performer, and it’s just a taste of what’s to come.

Ivory Scott: “The EP, it’s really an introduction, it’s the first half of my album. Like, my album is named ‘Ebony,’ but the EP has come before it, ‘Before Ebony.'”

Ivory’s making his move to be out front for one simple reason.

Ivory Scott: “In music, now, you know, that we listen to every day, like there’s an opening for Ivory Scott, and I feel like it’s just my time. It feels right.”

Guitarist Joe Satriani’s out-of-this-world artwork on display at Wentworth Gallery locations https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/guitarist-joe-satrianis-out-of-this-world-artwork-on-display-at-wentworth-gallery-locations/ Sat, 09 Sep 2023 01:38:18 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1357523 Some people make art with an instrument in their hands. Others use a paint brush. Joe Satriani can do both. The guitarist is in town this weekend to display his talents, which are truly out of this world.

Joe Satriani’s known for his incredible guitar playing, but now he’s showing off a different kind of art at Wentworth Gallery in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Joe Satriani: “These are my paintings. Can you believe it? I mean, wow.”

The master shredder created visual art long before he ever picked up a guitar.

Joe Satriani: “So there was art materials in the house as I was growing up. My brother and I were forced into drawing and painting just to keep us out of trouble, and I just kept doing it.”

It took a while for him to put his ideas down on any kind of canvas.

Joe Satriani: “I started doing guitar picks, CD covers, merchandising, T-shirts, and so, it’s been about eight years now of just really working hard to transfer all that other stuff I did for years and put it directly on a canvas or a guitar.”

Joe gets a ton of inspo from the possibility of interplanetary visitors coming to Earth. No surprise, since his biggest hit is called “Surfing with the Alien.”

He’s ready for a cosmic meet-and-greet.

Joe Satriani: “At night I look up, and I go, ‘I’m waiting for a visitation.’ It hasn’t happened yet. I feel like they’re avoiding me for some reason. I’m not really sure, so if they’re watching this, I’m ready.”

Joe’s artwork, whether it’s hanging on a wall or dressing up an electric guitar, is up for sale this weekend.

And, if you happen to purchase a six-string Axe, you’ll get the opportunity of a lifetime: a chance to jam with the master.

Stephen DeLeon: “I couldn’t pass up the chance to get a guitar and play with the man, the one and only Joe Satriani.”

We couldn’t pass up the chance to hear Joe’s version of the “Deco Drive” theme.

Joe’s gonna be at the Wentworth Gallery in Boca on Saturday and the Las Olas Boulevard location on Sunday. For more info, click here.

Gabby B gives her breast impression in new single ‘Leche,’ a collab with fellow SoFlo artist Vikina https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/gabby-b-gives-her-breast-impression-in-new-single-leche-a-collab-with-fellow-soflo-artist-vikina/ Fri, 08 Sep 2023 00:14:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1356901 If you’re thirsty for some new music, let Gabby B fill your cup. She just dropped a new track that celebrates a particular part of the female anatomy. Which part are we talking about? Deco’s Alex Miranda has never wanted to answer a question more.

The eyes, the hair and the derriere have all inspired songwriters, but now, translated into English, the title of Gabby B’s new song is “Milk.”

Gabby B (singing): “The way that I’m movin’ my body, I see that it’s turning you on, set the world on fire.”

The song’s called “Leche,” and Gabby B wrote it because she felt another area of a woman’s body was getting too much attention.

Gabby B: “There’s so many songs about booty, you know, dancing, twerking, and I’m like, ‘Why can’t we do a song about boobs?'”

Fair enough. “Leche” is a collaboration between Gabby and another local artist, Pitbull protégée Vikina.

The lyrics came together spontaneously when the two ladies were hanging out in the studio, vibing to an instrumental track.

Gabby B: “It was so, like, not planned at all. Vikina wrote hers on the spot, and I wrote mine on the spot, and we all, like, contributed.”

After that, everything fell right into place, and “Leche” was born.

Gabby B: “It was so natural. Once we wrote down lyrics, and it caught on to the beat, we just recorded right there, and we finished the song right there. It was probably the quickest song I’ve done.”

Gabby B (rapping): “Leche, leche, leche, leche, leche, leche, leche, leche. Toma, toma, toma, toma, toma.”

Gabby’s hoping the song will help her accomplish one of her goals: catching the attention of Latin listeners.

Gabby B: “With Vikina being on the track also, and her being a Miami girl and Hispanic, I just thought it’s just like the perfect song for the introduction to Latin world.”

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that there’s already a “Leche Dance Challenge” on TikTok.

And, Gabby B says, you don’t have to be a woman to do the “Leche Challenge.”

Gabby B: “The dance to ‘Leche’ could be shimmy, you know, it could be anything you want. It could be – you could put a milk cup on your head and dance.”

Gabby B says that she wrote “Leche” to empower women to not be ashamed of their bodies. Who’d be ashamed of her body?!
