Foodies can get a taste of the real thing at a new SoFlo hot spot. No horse or cowboy hat needed here.

When it comes to serving up real Central Texas barbecue, B&D Trap in Fort Lauderdale isn’t just blowing smoke.

Orelle Young: “We are the first authentic Texas barbecue restaurant here in Fort Lauderdale.”

When you get here, get ready for a very tasty ride.

Orelle Young: “B&D Trap barbecue is a journey that we’d like to invite our guests on. We would like to introduce authentic Texas barbecue to South Florida.”

The dishes served up have been around for a long time.

Orelle Young: “I’d say it’s over a century in the making. You had a lot of German immigrants and families that came and opened up grocery stores and meat markets. They had to figure out something to do with their meats, so they did what they knew best. They smoke their meats.”

One trap you won’t fall into is getting your food slathered in sauce. That’s a no-no at B&D.

Orelle Young: “We eat meat because we enjoy the flavor of meat. We don’t want sauce for the same reason we don’t use hickory or mesquite: super strong, overpowering. We don’t want to cover anything up. We’re not masking anything. We want you to enjoy the meat for what it is.”

Their cooking technique will definitely rub you the right way.

Orelle Young: “We have special dry rubs. I call them our signature dry rubs. I have a special dry rub for each type of meat.”

Sauce-heads, you are not excluded. There’s some of your favorite stuff on the sandwiches. The small but mighty menu features two beers and sides like mac and cheese.

If you’re looking for ribs, get ready for a plateful of plenty.

Orelle Young: “But we’re a Texas barbecue, we had to go full-size spare ribs. We want some super meaty ribs, you’re looking at some center cuts that, I guess, sometimes weigh a third to a half-pound each. Yeah, that’s what we’re looking for: large and in-charge ribs.”

B&D is part of the revitalization of Fort Lauderdale’s Sistrunk Boulevard. It sounds like they were made for the neighborhood.

Orelle Young: “There’s parties and people smoking and grilling meats down the block that way. The same thing that way, the culture’s already here. Now we have a place for people to do less work and come and enjoy the food.”

Laura Cugno: “Absolutely amazing! The brisket melted in the mouth, and this spot is pretty dope.”

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-386/ Sat, 13 Apr 2024 01:42:45 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1433296 The weekend’s coming up, and if you’ve got the time, we’ve got the movies. The five films on hand are all different and all extremely watchable … which should come as no surprise, because that’s how we roll on Showtime.

Kirsten Dunst (as Lee): “Every time I survived a war zone, I thought I was sending a warning home: ‘Don’t do this.’ But here we are.”

Kirsten Dunst is a photojournalist who finds herself in the middle of a second American “Civil War.” The film is a frightening look at our country if we can’t resolve our differences.

Jay Hernandez (as JB Peña): “Now, these teams, they’ve had access to a lot of things. You boys haven’t, but the best golfer isn’t the one with the fanciest clubs, it’s the one who can summon the will to keep swinging when things get tough.”

In the mid-1950s, five Mexican boys challenged the idea that golf was a white man’s sport. “The Long Game” is their true story.

Nicolas Cage (as Paul): “There are those who believe they came after the pollution that people caused, and they’re here to cleanse the planet of the human race.”

A bleak future. Monsters that only come out at night. And to top it off, Nicolas Cage in the lead role. “Arcadian” is all that — and a lot more.

Larissa Dali (as Becky): “Hello, I’m Rebecca. I’m one of your new neighbors. Everyone just calls me Becky.”

Folusho Peters (as Joy): “Nice to meet you.”

Everyone might call Larissa Dali “Becky,” but you’ll call her deadly after you check out this story of a neighbor from hell.

Simone Joy Jones (as Tanya Crandell): Morning, Mrs. Sturak. Mrs. Sturak?

Ayaamii Sledge (as Melissa Crandell): “Sweet! My first dead body.”

Miles Fowler (as Bryan): “I’m for sure going to juvie.”

“Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” is a 2024 retelling of the 1991 big screen comedy.

Not much has changed. Mom goes away, babysitter drops dead, and the kids go wild.

Donielle T. Hansley Jr. (as Kenny): “Dishes are done, man.”

Former aerial photographer recounts moment he captured O.J. Simpson’s infamous Bronco police chase in Los Angeles https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/former-aerial-photographer-recounts-moment-he-captured-o-j-simpsons-infamous-bronco-police-chase-in-los-angeles/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 22:10:16 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1432807 O.J. Simpson, who became a household name in the 90s when he was on trial for a double murder, has died at the age of 76 after battling prostate cancer.

Simpson captivated the country when he rode down a Los Angeles interstate in one of the most-watched events in television history as many adults were glued to the screen when that happened.

But no one had their eye on the Bronco more than the photographer, whose video was being broadcasted live.

“And my first thought, certainly as an aerial photographer was, ‘Don’t mess this up. This is, this is an important shot to hang on to here,'” said photographer Jeff Mailes.

Mailes was one of the first to capture a live picture of Simpson as he took police on that slow speed chase in the infamous white Ford Bronco.

Initially, the call from police came out as a fugitive running from the law.

“And at that point, all of the news media helicopters in Los Angeles launched and were looking for that white Bronco,” Mailes said. “I came on at about 3 p.m. in the afternoon and we re-launched the helicopter, and we headed down to Orange County because there was speculation that O.J. had gone to Nicole’s graveside.”

“So, literally, every police officer and federal agent in California, and maybe even the country, were now looking for O.J. Simpson, as well as every reporter,” said Zoey Tur, helicopter pilot during the chase. “So I turned to my crew, we had our helicopter in downtown L.A. and I said that we’re going to go find him.”

Media and police were looking for Simpson on busy L.A. Roads.

Tur, along with her crew, were credited with being the first to find Simpson.

“We launched and flew every freeway in Los Angeles looking for a white Bronco,” he said. “We spotted a couple of them but it wasn’t his and then finally, in south Orange County, at the El Toro Y, we came upon the Bronco that was being followed, I believe at that point by one black and white car.”

Mailes worked for L.A. Television station K-Cal TV, and and it wasn’t long before his local picture went national.

“And as soon as we got the Bronco into our sites, our local station took it live and it was only moments later that we heard over the helicopter radio that ‘You guys keep your shot. CNN is gonna take you live’ and then that lasted for another hour and a half, all the way up to the Rockingham State,” he said.

Tur said that the live coverage changed the landscape for how news is reported.

“I think that news operations realized the power of the live coverage has and, especially with a news helicopter, so it changed the way television coverage happened,” Turr said. “The helicopter became a front line tool in breaking news.”

The live police pursuit of Simpson was watched by over 95 million people.

“I’ve got the door of the helicopter open. I’ve got my feet on the skids. I’m sitting on the floorboards, hand holding the camera and we’re, we’re, we’re going, ‘Hey, we’ve got, we’ve got OJ and the Bronco,” Mailes said.

With no cellphones at the time, people were glued to their radios and televisions as they watched the live coverage preempting regular programming, including the NBA Finals.

“It’s one of those events that you know exactly where you were when it happened,” Tur said. “The country stopped. The country ground to a halt to watch this surreal situation. People poured out to the freeways to watch this weird procession going by. Eighteen helicopters, two airplanes and dozens of sheriffs and highway patrol men all out to get O.J. Simpson.”

“So people were leaving their homes and their work and wherever they were, and they were racing to these overpasses and putting together makeshift banners and things like that,” Mailes said. “So it really began to morph into this celebration of ‘Go, O.J., go O.J.’ But that really when I saw that level of activity with people. That’s when it really struck me that, ‘Hey, this is something, something historical that’s happening right here.'”

Mailes has since retired but said that moment was one of the most significant of his career. As for Tur, she said she went from being somewhat well-known to being extremely well-known overnight.

‘Civil War,’ new action thriller from ‘Ex Machina’ director, explores what a war-torn US could be like https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/civil-war-new-action-thriller-from-ex-machina-director-explores-what-a-war-torn-us-could-be-like/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 01:03:51 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1432126 The United States is waging a battle with itself. Well, at least it is in the new film “Civil War.” The director and cast are giving us a deeper look into the action thriller, and it’s intense.

News Anchor 1: “Nineteen states have seceded.”

News Anchor 2: “The United States Army ramps up activity.”

News Anchor 3: “The White House issued warnings to the Western Forces, as well as the Florida Alliance.”

Journalists try to survive as they cover a collapsing United States in “Civil War,” the latest film from “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation” director Alex Garland.

Wagner Moura (as Joel): “They’re moving to D.C. today.”

Kirsten Dunst (as Lee): “We need to go down there.”

Stephen McKinley Henderson (as Sammy): “They shoot journalists on sight in the capital. Every instinct in me says this is death.”

Alex Garland, director/writer: “Lots of civil wars are just disintegrations, and actually fighting as a means of not being killed, rather than fighting for a cause.”

Wagner Moura (as Joel): “You don’t know what side they’re fighting for?”

Soldier: “Someone’s trying to kill us. We are trying to kill them.”

Kirsten Dunst: “It just shows you what happens when polarization is so extreme.”

Alex Garland: “I was interested in what it is like to be risking your life to present, as much as you can, sort of objective, unbiased reporting, in the old-fashioned sense reporting, and find that the voice is silenced or ineffective within the noise of the broader context.”

Cailee Spaeny (as Jessie): “Why didn’t I just tell him not to shoot them?”

Wagner Moura (as Joel): “They were probably going to kill them anyway.”

Cailee Spaeny (as Jessie): “How do you know?”

Kirsten Dunst (as Lee): “He doesn’t know, but that’s besides the point. Once you start asking yourself those questions, you can’t stop. So we don’t ask. We record, so other people ask.”

Alex Garland: “So I wanted to put those people right in the heart of the narrative and show them as conflicted, compromised people, but performing something that requires courage and is also necessary.”

Cailee Spaeny: “I think he really relies on his audience to be intellectual and to inject their own beliefs.”

Kirsten Dunst: “But the way that Alex handled that through the eyes of these journalists, I think makes it in theory a human story, and what happens when people stop having conversations and treating each other like human beings.”

Kirsten Dunst (as Lee): “Every time I survived a war zone, I thought I was sending a warning home: ‘Don’t do this.’ But here we are.”

“Civil War” opens in theaters on Friday.

‘They will be held accountable’: DeSantis signs bill increasing penalties for retail theft, porch pirates https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/they-will-be-held-accountable-desantis-signs-bill-increasing-penalties-for-retail-theft-porch-pirates/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 00:45:09 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1432096 STUART, Fla. (WSVN)— Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed new legislation cracking down on thieves, including porch pirates.

The governor was in Stuart, Florida, on Tuesday to send a strong message to potential retail thieves and porch pirates.

“They will be held accountable,” said DeSantis.

House Bill 549 stiffens penalties for thieves, especially those who come on people’s property to take packages, known as porch pirates.

“You have a cottage industry of porch piracy where people will steal packages from someone’s front porch,” said DeSantis.

The law’s new penalties for porch pirates include:

  • Making theft of property in an amount less than $40 is a first-degree misdemeanor.
  • A subsequent violation is a third-degree felony.
  • Theft of property valued at $40 or more is a third-degree felony.

7News has reported at length on thefts that took away people’s sense of security, along with their items.

“I had several packages stolen from my front door,” said Miami resident Myron Roberts.

Some video shows packages being scooped up in seconds.

Back in May of 2023, in Northwest Miami-Dade, two women made off with two large packages worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in broad daylight.

“This makes me feel very upset, that that they felt like it was OK to just walk on your property,” said resident Kiana Jackson.

But the thieves aren’t just targeting personal items. Small business owners who depend on delivery to function are also impacted by the thieves.

“I run a company called Urban Troos. It’s a really fine designer pillow decor brand,” said business owner Hannah Gardner.

Thieves in Dania Beach set Gardner’s business back a month in production and $20,000 in the hole.

“We would love for you to return thousands of dollars of inventory that absolutely has no value to you,” said Gardner.

The new law aims to make criminals think twice.

“This is not the place to do it, and if you try to do it in Florida, you are going to regret that you tried to do it in Florida,” said DeSantis.

The law goes into effect on Oct. 1.

2024 Fleet Week to feature massive air carrier USS Harry S. Truman off Miami Beach https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/2024-fleet-week-to-feature-massive-air-carrier-uss-harry-s-truman-off-miami-beach/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 00:37:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1432130 Fleet Week returns in just under a month, and this year, a massive aircraft carrier will sail into South Florida.

Hundreds of sailors will be greeting visitors when Fleet Week sails back from May 5 to May 12.

This year will bring an exciting roster of events to welcome sailors, Marines and Coast Guard officers.

This year, the massive military exposition is moving several miles down, from Port Everglades to Port Miami.

“While we’ve done many weeks with the great hosts at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, this is a first for Miami,” said U.S. Navy Adm. Daryl Caudle.

Around 800 service members are expected to dock in the Magic City with one mission: to teach people, young and old, about the Navy’s importance in the defense of the U.S.

Caudle, a commander at U.S. Fleet Forces Command, explained why Fleet Week is actually quite a big deal..

“That’s the most important part of Fleet Week, is that the folks in Miami get to meet the great Americans that are on our ships, that come from all walks of life,” he said.

Like every year, attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the different ships on display. Among them will be the massive USS Harry S. Truman.

Dubbed the “finest aircraft carrier in the fleet,” this ship extends more than 1,000 feet in length and is as high as a 24-story building.

The military airplanes on board the Truman are capable of projecting tactical air power over the sea as well as inland.

The ship is the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be brought to any Fleet Week. It will soon sail on a new adventure on the Red Sea.

“She’s in her preparations for deployment, and we’re going to take a departure from that and a little break to get her down to Miami Fleet Week,” said Caudle.

Those interested in joining the U.S. Navy will have some opportunities to apply.

“We’ll have our Navy talent and acquisition teams, which, they are our recruiters, and they’ll be working closely with me and my team to actually make sure that folks who are interested in joining the Navy have all the opportunity to learn about those as well,” said Caudle.

The Truman will anchor off the shore of Miami Beach. Guests will be able take a ferry to and from the ship during Fleet Week. For more information, and how to get tickets, click here.

Bodycam footage shows 2022 strip search of man on side of Jacksonville road; 3 officers reprimanded https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/bodycam-footage-shows-2022-strip-search-of-man-on-side-of-jacksonville-road-3-officers-reprimanded/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 22:41:28 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1432079 JACKSONVILLE, FLA (WSVN)— Three officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office have been disciplined following a controversial arrest that ended in a strip search on the side of a public road.

The incident occurred about a year and a half ago, but new body camera footage, obtained by The Tributary, a nonprofit newsroom, shows a better picture of what happened that day.

“You can’t bend me over like that, bro. I know my rights,” said the man as he was searched by a deputy.

The footage shows officers strip searching the man during an arrest for allegedly selling cocaine in September 2022.

The video shows officers pulling down Ronnie Reed’s pants and underwear, exposing his genitals in front of the public.

Following the incident, three of the officers involved have been disciplined by the department.

“If the individual is concealing contraband, meaning drugs, he will pick up a second charge, which is introducing a controlled substance into a corrections facility. But that’s not the street officer’s concern,” said law and safety expert Dale Carson.

Safety experts like Carson say that since the officers were searching for a $20 bill and narcotics, a strip search in public view was absolutely inappropriate.

“It sends a message to the community that they shouldn’t cooperate at all with law enforcement. That’s the devastating aspect of this circumstance,” said Carson.

Florida Statute does authorize law enforcement to conduct strip searches for narcotics upon receiving written approval from a supervising officer, but the policy only allows corrections officers to conduct the searches.

During the internal investigation, both officers testified they were never trained on the agency’s strip search policy.

“Had you ever had any type of training in the search that was conducted on Mr. Reed?” asked a female officer in the interrogation video of the officers.

“No, not to that extent. No,” said JSO Officer Joel Belgard.

But according to the department, all officers are trained on the strip search policy.

“Bro, listen, bro. You’re doing too much,” said the man being searched on the bodycam footage.

“No, I’m not!” said the officer.

Carson said that at the end of the day, any officer should know the conduct captured in the body camera footage is wrong.

“You don’t need a general order to spell out what is common sense. The key to this is to not treat people like you would not like to be treated,” said Carson.

The three officers involved in the strip search received written reprimands, which is one step below a suspension.

Nicole Coughlan and Lydia West play best friends on Tubi’s new dark comedy show ‘Big Mood’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/nicole-coughlan-and-lydia-west-play-best-friends-on-tubis-new-dark-comedy-show-big-mood/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:24:27 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1431770 Bestie status is on the rocks for two best mates in Tubi’s “Big Mood.” Deco sat down with the stars, who compared sex scenes in this new series versus “Bridgerton” sex scenes. Take a peek.

Nicola Coughlan (as Maggie): “Oh, my God, you shagged Jonah.”

Lydia West (as Eddie): “What?”

Nicola Coughlan (as Maggie): “Oh, Eddie.”

Besties can smell each other’s bad decisions and also be there for all the ups…

Sally Philips (as Dr. Burrows): “You’ve been diagnosed with bipolar two, four, six years?”

…and the downs.

In Tubi’s dark comedy, “Big Mood,” Nicola Coughlan and Lydia West are lifelong friends. But their friendship is tested when Maggie, played by Nicola, becomes manic.

Nicola Coughlan (as Maggie): “We have been chatting on Tinder. For how long has it been?”

Man: “An hour.”

Any real-life experience with app dating?

Nicola Coughlan: “I have none. I’ve never done it.”

Lydia West: “Oh, I have.”

Nicola Coughlan: “Have you?”

Lydia West: “And actually, the bar which Eddie runs, it’s called Big Mood, it’s a real-life pub.”

Nicola Coughlan: “No, it’s called Wet Mouth.”

Lydia West: “Sorry.”

[Nicola laughs.]

Lydia West: “My God, I’m so sorry.”

In the show, Maggie throws a disastrous dinner party, but the actress actually enjoys hosting one in real life.

Nicola Coughlan: “I love to cook for people. I love having people at my house. But, yeah, we once had a dinner party where I fell asleep at the table.”

Lydia West: “Did you?”

Nicola Coughlan: “Yeah, oh, yeah. You weren’t there. You were away. Yeah, yeah, I fell asleep on the table.”

Lydia West: “That’s so funny!”

Woman: “C’mon guys.”

Lydia West (as Eddie): “Oh, my God.”

Woman: “I’m his wife.”

Nicola Coughlan (as Maggie): “Can you please tell your kids to stop filming me?”

Nicola shows a little skin in the series, but how does it compare to season three of Netflix’s “Bridgerton?”

Nicola Coughlan: “I was filming ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Big Mood’ at the same time for, like, three weeks, and the sex scenes in ‘Bridgerton’ were scary and intimidating, but like, you know, a big part of the show. But then, by the time I had to do one in ‘Big Mood,’ I was like, ‘This is fine.’ I was far more clothed in ‘Big Mood’ than I am in ‘Bridgerton.'”

Lydia West (as Eddie): “You’re a nightmare.”

Nicola Coughlan (as Maggie): “But you love me.”

Lydia West (as Eddie): “But I love you.”

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-385/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 00:10:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1431129 Action. Drama. Thrills. And even a little love. Sure, you can find all that and more every night right here on Deco, But if you’re looking to fill the void this weekend, have no fear. Lynn Martinez shows us how this week’s Showtime packs a real punch.

Dev Patel (as Kid): “Just one small ember can burn down everything.

Sobhita Dhulipala (as Sita): “Make them remember your name.”

No monkeying around here. Dev Patel means serious business in the new action thriller “Monkey Man.” The actor, who also co-wrote and directed the film, plays a guy who’s hunting down the men responsible for his mother’s death. Now, he’s using his fists to enact revenge.

Charithra Chandran (as Amelia): “I want to experience things before we finish school, and I haven’t kissed anyone.”

Sebastian Croft (as Archie): “Popular people go for popular people.”

All’s fair in love and war, especially in high school. In “How to Date Billy Walsh,” a pair of childhood friends named Archie and Amelia decide to revamp their image.

But, as she falls for the new transfer student, she has no idea her bestie has always had feelings for her. Ooooo, the drama!

Nell Tiger Free (as Margaret): “There’s this girl at the orphanage. I think that she really needs someone to look out for her.”

Things are getting dark and sinister in “The First Omen.” A nun working in Rome accidentally uncovers an evil plot involving the birth of the Antichrist. Now she’s got to protect the orphan girl at the center of it all from the church itself.

Lynn Collins (as Louise Quinn): “Dawson, you deserve to know.”

Scott Reeves (as Larry Quinn): London was an in-vitro baby. We couldn’t get pregnant otherwise.”

Lynn Collins (as Louise Quinn): “The procedure gave us two embryos.”

And you thought your family had secrets! In “Someone Like You,” a grieving guy goes searching for his best friend’s secret twin after her tragic passing. But tensions rise as the two start falling for each other.

Voice over the radio: “The mystery of the obscene little Hampton letter is causing widespread distress across the nation.”

A little dirty talk never hurt anybody, but in “Wicked Little Letters,” some cheeky mail is making everyone clutch their pearls.

Olivia Colman thinks Jessie Buckley’s character is the potty-mouthed anonymous author. But there’s more to this mystery than meets the eye.

Reconnect with your childhood at ‘Disney Princess: The Concert,’ coming to Broward Center https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/reconnect-with-your-childhood-at-disney-princess-the-concert-coming-to-broward-center/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 01:34:04 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1430707 A dream is a wish your heart makes, at least according to Cinderella, and we’re on the same page when it comes to shoes. If your dream also includes a night of music, you’re in luck! There’s a fun concert coming to town this weekend that’s a real royal affair.

They’ve taken us to new heights, and under the sea.

And this weekend, Disney’s iconic princesses and their musical fairy god-fairy are taking over the Broward Center.

Benjamin Rauhala: “It’s sort of a cross between almost a Broadway show and then almost like the Disney Princess Eras Tour.”

Disney Princess: “‘The Concert’ brings the animated characters you know and love to life on stage, with the help of some Broadway divas.

Like SoFlo’s own Syndee Winters.

Syndee Winters: “I played Nala in Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ on Broadway, and I am celebrating Princess Tiana, Princess Merida, Queen Anna and Queen Nala.”

Syndee Winters (singing): “But I’ve climbed the mountain and crossed the river, and I’m almost there.”

Now, the show is not your typical concert experience.

Syndee Winters: “We get to have a 40-foot giant LED screen that plays the animations in the back while we sing some of these songs.”

Syndee Winters, Alyssa Fox, and Hiba Elchikhe (singing): “Let it go, let it go, and I’ll rise like the break of dawn.”

Alyssa Fox and Hiba Elchikhe are also joining the princess party.

Hiba Elchikhe: “I think that everyone can connect to Disney music generationally, right? So I think there’s something in it for everyone.”

Alyssa Fox: “It’s so amazing getting to connect with audiences in different cities, so we’re excited about joining you over there in Florida.”

And the best part is singing along.

Syndee Winters: “To get to be able to sing this music with the audience and, like, put the mic out and let them sing.”

Benjamin Rauhala: “You are all in the show with us. We love to hear you sing.”

And dressing up is encouraged.

Alyssa Fox: “It’s a really incredible thing to know that you can wear a gown and wear sparkles and wear a crown, even.”

Hiba Elchikhe: “Yeah.”

Alyssa Fox: “And still feel like a strong warrior.”

Downtown Miami really comes alive at night. But what to do if you’re a mad scientist at heart?

OK, let’s not bring Frankenstein’s monster back to life.

Alec Warren: “Being able to drink, have alcohol, have food in a museum without any other children around, this is the first time we’ve done something along those lines. We are Miami’s science museum, after all, and that means we want to serve everyone, including adults without kids, or adults looking to get away from their kids for the night.”

This quarterly event has different themes every time.

Alec Warren: “April 4th is going to be all ocean-themed. We have space-themed events going on later in the year, and even some spooky science in Halloween.”

These big kids appreciate an adult beverage while watching the show.

Elizabeth Ho-sing-loy: “Yes, the drinks definitely help. Makes it a more enhanced experience.

With your ticket you get…

Alec Warren: “Tickets start at $34.95 for adults. That’s general admission. That gets you the planetarium experience, as well as full access to the entire museum and all the experiences. When you enter, you’re going to be greeted with a food and beverage cart. You’re also going to be greeted with a DJ in our ocean gallery.”

Now, if you’re not about looking up, they have fun options, too.

Alec Warren: “Even if you don’t necessarily want to come see an amazing, unique planetarium show, you can still come hang out underneath the oculus. Or see any of our amazing exhibits.”

Kerron Lettman: “All of the fun of the museum, no kids, and alcohol.”

Taylor Smith: “Yes, so far so good. We took the Brightline down to beat the traffic and enjoying everything thus far.”

‘Cuban Cowboy’ Orlando Mendez talks about his career and influences ahead of Miami-Dade CountryFest https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/cuban-cowboy-orlando-mendez-talks-about-his-career-and-influences-ahead-of-miami-dade-countryfest/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 00:18:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1430318 From Miami to the heart of country music, local musician Orlando Mendez is making waves with his soulful tunes, and the music is good, too. In fact, it’s so good that Deco just had to sit down with the rising star at Sergio’s in Doral to get a feel of the musician ourselves.

Orlando Mendez (singing): “So baby hold me tonight. So that I won’t be lonely.”

Miami native Orlando Mendez is heating up the country music scene.

Orlando Mendez (singing): “Some people tell me I’m fine, some people say they don’t know me anymore.”

Orlando Mendez: “I’m a hometown kid from Miami with a big heart and a big love for music.”

A love that Orlando says began years before he stepped into the limelight.

Orlando Mendez: “I always imagined I would be entertaining. You know, since I was a kid I’ve been singing. I’ve always known I wanted to be on a stage, in front of people, touching lives and entertaining.”

And touching lives is exactly what he does on stage. In fact, his fans feel so connected to him that they even gave him a nickname.

“Cuban Cowboy is kind of like a nickname. I got it during a show one time playing here in Miami. I heard someone call from the crowd ‘Cuban Cowboy,’ and I was like, ‘Dang, I kind of like that,’ so it stuck.”

And it’s not just because of the way he sings.

Orlando Mendez: “I guess, you know, how I dress, the boots, and the style in which I sing and play. It made sense.”

But singing the country blues wasn’t always in his plan.

Orlando Mendez: “Well, I was an actor before I was a singer. I had a short stint in acting between Miami in New York, and then, once the pandemic hit, I got into music.”

Orlando credits Hootie & the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker as his inspiration.

Darius Rucker (singing): “I wanna love you the best that I, the best that I can.”

Orlando Mendez: “I first started listening to Darius Rucker, and I remember hearing some of his songs. That song, “Dolphins Make Me Cry,” had been like an anthem for me, so he was like my gateway, and then I found a bunch of other country artists that I love.”

Orlando’s newest single, “Motherland,” is an ode to his Cuban roots.

Orlando Mendez (singing): “The island where I came from, that’s still a part of me.”

Orlando Mendez: “‘Motherland’ is real close to my heart. It’s my family story, the story of my connection to Cuba.”

You can catch Orlando on April 21st for the Miami-Dade CountryFest. Square dance over to get some tickets.

Medical miracle: Mother tells story of premature baby who spent over 100 days at Jackson Memorial Hospital https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/medical-miracle-mother-tells-story-of-premature-baby-who-spent-over-100-days-at-jackson-memorial-hospital/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 21:46:21 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1430209 He’s a medical miracle: a premature baby who spent more than 100 days in the hospital. Now his mother is sharing her gratitude with the South Florida hospital staff who saved his life.

The Jackson Health System does amazing life-saving work like this every day.

Patricia Fusco spoke with 7News, just in time for an annual event that she hopes will encourage people to help them save even more lives.

“I always say that I see many, many miracle stories at Jackson. Never did I think that I would be one of them,” Patricia Fusco said.

Loved ones describe 2-year-old Joseph Patrick, nicknamed J.P., as a vibrant and curious baby, but he’s had a long journey.

“We thought it was going to be a regular pregnancy, We didn’t think there were going to be any bumps along the road,” Fusco said, “but very early on, we discovered that things weren’t ideal.”

It all started when Fusco found out she wasn’t able to have children.

“Ever since I was in high school, I knew that I couldn’t have kids,” she said. “My best friend, Katrina Webman, offered to be our surrogate.”

Webman, who already had two children of her own, expected it would be another easy pregnancy.

It turned out to be anything but.

At 23 weeks, Webman suffered from terrible headaches and high blood pressure.

“It’s a really scary situation to be in,” Fusco said.

As a Jackson Health System employee, Fusco knew first hand the quality of care at Jackson’s neonatal intensive care unit.

Webman was admitted, and that’s when she was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication associated with high blood pressure.

Two weeks later, doctors also found the placenta was no longer providing critical nutrition to the baby.

That’s when everyone came together to make a difficult decision.

“So that day, we all sat together with Dr. [Felipe] Tudela. I will never forget that day, being in Katrina’s hospital room, and made the decision to bring Joseph into this world,” Fusco said.

On May 27, 2021, at 25 weeks and five days old, J.P. was born, weighing just 1 pound, 4 ounces.

But it would be a long time before he would be able to go home.

“On Sept. 24, 2021, Joseph came home after 123 days,” Fusco said.

It’s stories like J.P.’s that established the One Day for Jackson, a day dedicated to raising funds for Jackson Health System, so they can continue help to save lives.

Today, J.P. continues to grow and thrive.

His family is grateful for their miracle baby.

“I have the blessing of getting to celebrate my miracle, Joseph Fusco, every single day of my life,” Fusco said.

The Jackson Health Foundation will host various events for One Day for Jackson on Thursday.

All proceeds go toward funding more miracle stories just like J.P.’s. For more information, click here.

South Florida’s own Gabriel ‘G-Rod’ Rodriguez talks about acting in ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/south-floridas-own-gabriel-g-rod-rodriguez-talks-about-acting-in-bad-boys-ride-or-die/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 00:33:54 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1429851 Funny guys Will Smith and Martin Lawrence came and went to film “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” right here in the 305.

That was so fun, those road closures.

One cast member who stayed is Gabriel “G-Rod” Rodriguez. Well because SoFlo is his home.

Deco got down and dirty with the actor to give us the exclusive on the action flick, at least we hoped.

Martin Lawrence (as Marcus Burnett): “C’mon Mike slow down.”

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” kept the Miami spice going.

The action movie filmed everywhere in SoFlo. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence sightings hit all over social media.

One local bad boy you might also recognize in the flick is Gabriel “G-Rod” Rodriguez.

Now the actor is pretty easy to track down, he loves his ice cream at “Spiked Rich Nitrogen” in Davie.

So tell us everything G-Rod, tell us.

Gabriel Rodriguez: “Very excited about “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” that’s coming out in theaters June 7 (whispers) not much I can say.”

What about the meaning of the title at least?

Gabriel Rodriguez: “It’s like you’re my guy. You’re my ride-or-die. You’re my ride-or-die. You guys, Deco Drive is my ride or die.”

Very true! So spill the tea.

Gabriel Rodriguez: “(acting out fight scene) Phew, yeah that’s everything about the movie.”

Just kidding, he’s very tight-lipped but getting the call from the director was like.

Gabriel Rodriguez: “‘You want to be in the movie?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I want to be in the movie. What is wrong with you? Yes!’ He was like ‘alright this is all you have to do, just grow everything out.'”

Then the filmmaker told him the inspiration for the character, “presidente.”

Gabriel Rodriguez: “I came across a picture of President Salinas from Mexico and don’t show a picture of him…don’t do it.”

Gabriel Rodriguez: “His vision was Presidente Salinas and 55-year-old me version of him. And of course, I’m not 55. Of course, 25. That’s on my Tinder profile right now. Swipe right.”

One profile “Grey’s Anatomy” fans would swipe right on is Eric Dane’s.

Gabriel Rodriguez: “My boss in the movie, which is McGrath, who is played by Eric Dane. It was interesting to see him, my boss in the film you know bad guys, to see him play a bad side because he’s a total sweetheart, heartthrob in ‘Grey’s Anatomy.'”

Returning to the scene is Vanessa Hudgens as Kelly.

Gabriel Rodriguez: “I put my whole body through it. You guys are gonna see what I do for the love of the art. This is what I do for you guys. Agh, sheesh, my back is…gimme a second. Ugh!”

Sheila E. and friends Gloria Estefan and Tony Succar ready to rock The Fillmore Miami Beach https://wsvn.com/uncategorized/sheila-e-and-friends-gloria-estefan-and-tony-succar-ready-to-rock-the-fillmore-miami-beach/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 00:32:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1429414 Legendary musician and undisputed queen of percussion Sheila E. is hitting the road, and she making a stop right here in the Magic City.

She’s also bringing some friends along for the ride. Deco sat down with the incomparable drummer to hear all about it.

Sheila E.: “I am strong, I am fearless, I am courageous.”

Sheila E. marches to the beat of her own drum.

And now she wants you to march over to the Fillmore this Wednesday to check out her show, “Sheila E. and Friends.”

Sheila E.: “Really excited about it. Like, this is going to be crazy.”

Sheila can’t wait to hit the stage with her dad, Pete Escovedo.

Sheila E.: “No one can match up me playing with my dad, no matter who and how popular. My dad is, like, number one, he’s the man.”

The drummer is also getting help from friends like Tony Succar and Gloria Estefan.

Gloria Estefan: “We will be rocking the house with Sheila E. She’s going to have an amazing night presenting her record ‘Bailar,’ of which I’m a part of.”

Sheila E.: “The initial idea was to try to get as many of the artists that performed on my record, and I wanted to do it here in Miami. It’s special because I recorded 90% of the record here. The vibe is just, it’s dance, it’s like, put on your dancing shoes.”

And, when it comes to songs…

Celia Cruz (singing): “Pa’ mi, tú no eres na’. Tú tienes la Bemba Colorá.”

Sheila E.: “‘Bemba Colorá’ is a famous Celia Cruz song, and I always wanted to do a song of hers.”

Gloria Estafan (singing): “Pa’ mi, tú no eres na’. Tú tienes la Bemba Colorá.”

Sheila E.: “Gloria Estefan is the only person I could think of to sing that song, paying homage to an incredible queen, Ms. Celia Cruz.”

Sheila’s version of “Bemba Colorá” is the first single from her album.

Sheila E.: “It’s like a perfect time to bring in salsa with different elements, which is Bay Area, Oakland, a little bit of the funk element, a little bit of Creole in there, and it’s just that mixture with that, with salsa. It’s a new little flavor, you know.”

Legendairy Milkshake Bar in SoBe offers delicious twists on classics and specials locals will love https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/legendairy-milkshake-bar-in-sobe-offers-delicious-twists-on-classics-and-specials-locals-will-love/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 00:20:18 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427904 Things are shaking up on Miami Beach!

That’s right, a new milkshake bar is now in the 305. It’s called Legendairy, and their milkshake is bringing everyone to the yard, not just the boys.

Are you in the mood for something sweet? Don’t be silly! Of course you are.

Which is why you need to get to the all-new Legendairy milkshake bar in Miami Beach.

Christina Barnett: “Legendairy Milkshake Bar is a fast-casual ice cream and milkshake experience.”

She is not joking when she says it’s an experience, because these are not your ordinary sweet beverages.

Christina Barnett: “We take these incredible milkshakes, and we top them with these crazy desert toppings, like cheesecakes and brownies and all kinds of amazing desserts.”

Now with three locations in the U.S., Legendairy says it was only fair to bring its talents to SoFlo.

Christina Barnett: “For Miami Beach, we wanted to have a location that was catering to the tourists, but also, I wanted to have a location where the locals could feel welcomed to come here and have milkshakes.”

The word of this is already spreading.

Lea Stevenson: “So I was actually scrolling on TikTok, trying to find a sweet treat, like, you know locally, because I’m here on vacation. Their shakes look absolutely insane, and I was like, ‘I got to check that out.'”

So, what’s first on the menu?

Christina Barnett: “One of our most popular milkshakes amongst all three of the locations is our Oreo Galoreo.”

This delicious treat is a cookies-and-cream-based milkshake topped with crushed Oreo and marshmallow cream.

Christina Barnett: “I think people really love it because they are just comfortable with Oreos and cookies.”

People seem to also love this monstrosity of a treat. Feast your eyes on “The Bananas Foster.”

Legendairy customer: “Like a kid in the candy store.”

Think banana split, but slightly better. First, you drizzle caramel, then add brown sugar before finally setting the banana ablaze, and voilà. Banana goodness!

Legendairy customer: “Mmm, delicious.”

The Milkshake Bar is also offering up something special for the locals.

Christina Barnett: “Here in Miami Beach, we actually have a Miami exclusive shake. It’s called ‘Mermaid in Miami.'”

Faena Theater in Miami Beach launches ‘Masters of Comedy,’ a monthly comedy series https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/faena-theater-in-miami-beach-launches-masters-of-comedy-a-monthly-comedy-series/ Wed, 27 Mar 2024 00:13:54 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427566 There’ll be no “shushing” here. Faena Miami Beach is inviting everyone to laugh out loud inside their theater. They’re launching an exclusive monthly comedy series called “Masters of Comedy”.

To start off the roar of laughter tomorrow night is Bill Bellamy. Deco got the low down on what to expect from the master player himself.

Bill Bellamy: “Mike Tyson calls the honey from the hotel room at 2 o’clock in the morning. Is that or is that not a booty call? Can you help me?”

Comedian, Bill Bellamy made “booty call” a thing. But now it’s taking on a new sound with the youngins.

Bill Bellamy: “Like a booty call sounds like you getting a snack, like you’re really getting something. Sneaky link sound like it might be in the wrong packaging or it might not smell right, you know what I mean? Like it doesn’t sound like it’ll be good for you. You know what I’m talking about?!”

Bill Bellamy: “Be normal. But today? Just ain’t the day!”

Bill starred in the 90’s hit ‘How To Be a Player?’ and seems like he’s aging like a fine wine, what’s the secret?

Bill Bellamy: “Coco butter and laughter, that’s my one, two, three. All jokes aside, I think when you’re happy and you’re doing something that you love it keeps you youthful.”

Bill Bellamy: “I took a bath last week.”

Stand-up is his jam! This is why he’ll be coming to Miami Beach’s Faena Theater to kick-off his “Masters of Comedy.”

Bill Bellamy: “The thing I like the most about it is the masters of comedy. I feel like I’m a master of comedy. I get an opportunity to show you why I’m there and I get to enjoy my Miami, Florida fans. I’m excited to perform there. It’s a beautiful theater. Beautiful!

This lively 305 stage known for Allura Cabaret, now welcomes laughter.

Brian Forti, executive producer of Faena Theater: “Faena Theater is a wonderful intimate theater inside Faena Hotel. It’s been designed after a European opera house. We have performers coming from everywhere and they interact with the guests. The guests are eating and drinking and suddenly there’s an artist coming and sitting next to them dancing.”

Mrs Maisel: “You made a mistake calling a comedian. My refrigerator is not running sir. Bye now.”

The new monthly series was inspired by Prime Video’s hit “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

Brian Forti: “The art director said we cannot duplicate this look anywhere. We must put her in this theater. It was a great experience and if you watch the episode that is the reason why we have now moved on to presenting comedy series.”

Bill will launch the series, followed by funny guy, Adam Ray and jackass Brad Williams and you better come dressed to impress.

Brian Forti: “It’s unlike the other venues around town where you see comedy. It’s a great experience when you need to get away from work or all the things in your life that are bringing you down at the moment. It’s an escape and it works.”

“Masters of Comedy” premieres Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.

Children with autism sharpen swimming skills, surf during Spring Surf Camp https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/children-with-autism-sharpen-swimming-skills-surf-during-spring-surf-camp/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 23:42:34 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427538 The University of Miami and Nova Southeastern are teaming up for Spring Surf Camp, which gives back to children with autism.

“I’m super duper happy,” said Adam, Surf Camp participant.

That’s because Adam is trying something new.

“What did I do today? I surfed today,” said Adam. “At first I thought I was bad at it but turns out, I’m pretty good at it.”

Adam like other children has autism in this annual Spring Surf Camp on Miami Beach, through the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University, they’re doing things they’ve never done before.

“And we teach them how to surf and how to have fun,” said Adam.

The children sharpen their swimming skills, learn about oceanography, and develop their own abilities, regardless of what challenges they face.

“Have them feel they can do things that are challenging and conquer their fears,” said Sara Dajer, who is with Nova Southeastern for Autism and Related Disabilities.

The program said the children who participate are building confidence and trust in the ocean and themselves.

Ariana Grande gives fans new upbeat break-up song ‘We Can’t Be Friends’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/ariana-grande-gives-fans-a-new-upbeat-break-up-song-we-cant-be-friends/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 01:36:06 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427158 Ariana Grande says “We Can’t Be Friends,” in her new song of the same name.

But don’t let the title fool you. It’s upbeat, it’s poppy, and it’s meant to make you happy, even after you break up and are really, really sad. Don’t take our word for it. Hear it directly from Ari herself.

Ariana Grande (singing): “I don’t wanna tiptoe, but I don’t wanna hide.”

Ariana Grande: “We’re shooting a music video today, for ‘We Can’t Be Friends,’ the second single from ‘Eternal Sunshine.'”

Ariana Grande (singing): “But I don’t wanna feed this monstrous fire.”

Ariana Grande is stepping into a new story with “We Can’t Be Friends.”

Ariana Grande (singing): “You cling to your papers and pens. Wait until you like me again.”

Her new music video is a take on the Jim Carrey movie, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”

Jim Carrey (as Joel Barish): “My name is Joel Parish. I am here to erase the emotional core of each of our memories.”

Ariana Grande: “It’s just kind of about erasing the pain and only wanting the best for someone, even if it means not each other.”

Ariana Grande (singing): “But I feel so seen in the night, so for now, it’s only me.”

Ariana tweaked the movie ending a little bit, leaving fans with a happier message.

Ariana Grande: “This ending is quite different. Both of the characters end up discontinuing the cycle of their own toxic pattern.”

Ariana Grande (singing): “You got me misunderstood, but at least I look this good. We can’t be friends.”

Chris Breslauer: “It’s all about new beginnings and finding that both people can be happy in the end, and it’s not like one person wins in this case.”

Ariana Grande: “And it’s not like one person is wrong or the enemy or anything.”

Ariana Grande (singing): “I’ll wait for your love, I’ll wait for your love, I’ll wait for your love.”

Chris Breslauer: “And this song is so special, and it fits the storyline like a glove.”

Ariana Grande (singing): “I’ll wait for your love.”

Ahead of new album, DJ Frank Walker spins his magic at Ultra Music Festival https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/ahead-of-new-album-dj-frank-walker-spins-his-magic-at-ultra-music-festival/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 00:47:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425830 The Ultra Music Festival kicks off on Friday in Miami’s Bayfront Park, and DJ Frank Walker is gearing up to spin his magic. With a new album in the works, he’s set to take the crowd on a journey through EDM history and into the future of beats and bass.

If you live for the bass and the beats of electronic dance music, this is your time to shine! It’s Ultra time.

And before he hits the main stage this weekend, Deco huddled with DJ Frank Walker.

Frank Walker: “Super excited for Ultra. It’s one of the best dance festivals in the whole world, so it’s a super fun one to perform at.”

And he couldn’t be happier about playing in the 305.

Frank Walker: “Miami just has such a good energy. I think it’s, like, the weather’s so nice, sun beating on that main stage. Fans are having a good time, there’s so much energy.”

He also got a few surprises up his sleeve.

Frank Walker: “Might be debuting a couple singles that aren’t out yet on the main stage and have some singers out to perform. A little wink, wink, nudge, nudge.”

When he’s not whipping crowds into a frenzy, Frank can be found working on his new album, “Origin.”

Frank Walker: “It’s kind of a journey back to the sounds that inspired me to get into EDM in the first place. Right now, I’m finishing up my final album. It’s kind of inspired by throwback EDM, sounds lot of like Avicii, Alesso, Swedish House Mafia.”

You can catch DJ Frank Walker on the main stage on Saturday at 1:50 p.m.

‘Palm Royale’ stars Kristen Wiig and Josh Lucas discuss recreating 1960s SoFlo high society for Apple TV Plus miniseries https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/palm-royale-stars-kristen-wiig-and-josh-lucas-discuss-recreating-1960s-soflo-high-society-for-apple-tv-plus-miniseries/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 00:30:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425841 The 1960s were good times. The party decade! Not for the rest of the world, just the lucky few in “Palm Royale.”

Character in “Palm Royale”: “How did you get past security?”

Kristen Wiig (as Maxine Simmons-Dellacort): “I came in the back.”

Character in “Palm Royale”: “There are no doors on the back of the Palm Royale.”

Kristen Wiig is climbing Palm Beach’s social ladder in Apple TV Plus’ “Palm Royale.”

Kristen Wiig (as Maxine Simmons-Dellacort): “Evelyn? You are the woman to know in Palm Beach.”

Allison Janney (as Evelyn Rollins): “I don’t like you, Maxine.”

But winning over Palm Beach high society is not easy.

Kristen Wiig: “She becomes obsessed with it.”

Allison Janney (as Evelyn Rollins): “You know my name.”

Kristen Wiig (as Maxine Simmons-Dellacort): “Of course I do. I read about you every day.”

Kristen Wiig: “She will do anything.”

Kristen Wiig (as Maxine Simmons-Dellacort): “You are too good to me, Norma.”

Joining Maxine and her shenanigans is her hubby, Douglas, played by Josh Lucas.

Kristen Wiig (as Maxine Simmons-Dellacort): “Well, we should be preparing.”

Josh Lucas (as Douglas): “Clearly you have been. You’ve bought out half of our worth, haven’t you?”

Josh Lucas: “He’s also not the brightest guy in the whole world, and he’s willing to kind of go on any adventure with her, a little but a humorous Bonnie and Clyde.”

Unlike Bonnie and Clyde, there isn’t much of a gunfight happening, just a battle for superiority.

Josh Lucas: “There’s this wonderful battle between all of these houses for who’s the reigning, most wealthy, fabulous mansion in town.”

The show is pure fiction, but Josh told Deco that what he finds outrageous is how the Palm Beach partying never stopped in the ’60s.

Josh Lucas: “The fact that it’s actually something that actually really happened during that period of time in America, particularly when the civil rights movement was going, and the country was on fire with civil unrest, and these guys were just living in this, like, ultra-rich party life.”

Kristen Wiig (as Maxine Simmons-Dellacort): “You were born for this!”

Josh Lucas (as Douglas): “Awww.”

The costumes were not an exaggeration for the show, either.

Josh Lucas: “The costumes that Kristen and Allison and Laura and everyone are wearing are either true vintage from Chanel and all these incredible designers from that period, and then also things that they would recreate.”

Even with the glitz and glam of high society life, the residents at Palm Royale have lots of secrets to keep.

Kristen Wiig (as Maxine Simmons-Dellacort): “Let’s hear it for Palm Beach!”

The first three episodes of “Palm Royale” are now streaming on Apple TV Plus.

Life ring installed at Vizcaya Park as part of initiative honoring teen who drowned trying to save another https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/life-ring-installed-at-vizcaya-park-as-part-of-initiative-honoring-teen-who-drowned-trying-to-save-another/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 21:17:11 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425709 A life preserver ring was installed in Miramar in honor of a teen who lost his life.

7News cameras captured the moment that the ring was unveiled in Vizcaya Park, Thursday.

City officials are hoping that by installing life rings along several waterways lives will be saved.

Charmaine Fenton, who lost her 18-year-old son, Linnon Latham, spoke during the ceremony.

“He drowned right here,” she said.

Charmaine shared her account of the day Linnon died and spoke about the device that might have saved him.

“It’s a bittersweet moment for me, because maybe if there was a life ring, and someone saw my son in distress, it could have helped him,” she said.

Linnon drowned in a Miramar canal in 2023 after going missing.

The life ring that was installed at Vizcaya Park is part of an initiative brought on from Sarah Perry, whose son, Aden Perry, lost his life trying to save a driver who went into the water.

She believes a life ring would have made a difference.

“They have been proven to save lives for many years,” Sarah said. “They just have to be available to be used to save a life.”

Officials with Miramar Fire Rescue said the idea behind the life safety tool is for someone who is on the shore to throw it to the person in distress in the water, while keeping one end of the rope with them and pulling the person to shore.

Aden’s mom said she’s on a mission.

“One life ring, one city at a time. We’re going to make a difference,” she said.

To date, Sarah Perry’s organization has donated more than 300 life rings in different South Florida cities.

Model Volleyball returns to Miami Beach for 2-day event; Miami Beach Fire, Police to join in this year’s game action https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/model-volleyball-returns-to-miami-beach-for-2-day-event-miami-beach-fire-police-to-join-in-this-years-game-action/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 00:07:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425440 Model Volleyball is exactly what it sounds like: hot models playing on Miami Beach. Who doesn’t want to watch that? This is their 14th year, and they’ve included the law and firefighters into the game. Sun’s out, buns out, baby!

Models have a lot on their shoulders — from trying to look comfortable on the runway to looking sexy during photo shoots.

Model Volleyball is their time to let loose.

Brooke Lily Brazelton: “It’s all beautiful people. Everyone just gorgeous.”

This two-day tournament full of good-looking people has been around for 14 years.

Olivia Ormos: “It’s an invitational to the modeling agencies, so we invite the agencies to put together teams of co-ed models. Day one, nobody gets eliminated. Everybody gets to play each other for fun. Day two, where you get to see really kind of serious game play. Only the best players are on the court.”

These firm bods will battle it out on the sands of Miami Beach on March 30 and 31 and kicking off the event this year will make you do a double take.

Olivia Ormos: “This will be the first time we see the City of Miami Beach’s Fire and Police Department go head to head against each other playing in a beach volleyball tournament on the best beach in the world. So we’re excited to see who wins that.”

One veteran team captain is ready to kick some buns.

Brooke Lily Brazelton: “I am super competitive naturally. I still love to have fun, though. So I’m captain of my team.”

Whoever you’re cheering for, you won’t pay a penny to watch the pretty people play, ’cause it’s free!

Brooke Lily Brazelton: “It’s the best people-watching. Especially too when, like, the people visiting, like, for spring break and stuff, and they’ll end up staying the whole time. Like, I’ll see them at all the little booths and checking out the rock wall. Even if you don’t know about model volleyball, if you pass by it, I feel like it’s, ‘Wow!'”

Another wow factor is the Monkey Shoulder whisky. It’s a mixer truck that they’ll have on-site along with other activities. There’s also celeb sightings, from athletes to stars like Vince Vaughn.

Olivia Ormos: “Over the years, we’ve had everyone from Travis Scott to Joe Jonas to Jamie Foxx, Calvin Klein, tons of people that really just have accidentally either stumbled upon the event or have planned to come, and you never know who you’re going to see at model volleyball.”

The cast of ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ discuss the movie and teaming up with the original cast https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/the-cast-of-ghostbusters-frozen-empire-discuss-the-movie-and-teaming-up-with-the-original-cast/ Wed, 20 Mar 2024 00:15:04 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1424901 Ghostbusters, who’s calling? Maybe they have the wrong number? No, it’s the old guys and the new guys. They have to join forces in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”. That’s because they have their biggest challenge yet! Fighting a very powerful, death-chilling adversary.

Somebody’s going back to an old haunt in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.”

The movie brings the franchise back to where ghostbusting started: New York City.

Stars Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd were psyched about shooting in the same place as the 1984 original.

Carrie Coon: “When we think of the 1984 Ghostbusters, we think of the firehouse and we think of the OG’s, and here we were inside the firehouse with the OG.”

Paul Rudd: “It’s so kind of central to this story and the movie. It was all very exciting and a bit surreal.”

How’s this for surreal: Just when we’re sweating global warming, an evil force is threatening to plunge the world into an ice age. This netherworld nemesis is so great, the original Ghostbusters are called in for duty.

Carrie Coon: “The death chill. I mean is there anything scarier than that?”

Paul Rudd: “Even those words.”

The cast was excited to work with the OG’s of the franchise.

Finn Wolfhard: “Dan and Ernie and Bill, I mean, it’s just like, it’s so incredible to get to know them and, they’re so warm and nice to talk to.”

Mckenna Grace: “It’s like, when people are like, don’t meet your heroes, but, meet your heroes if you’re heroes are the Ghostbusters because they’re fantastic.”

Mckenna Grace says spending time with Dan Aykroyd made her a believer in the supernatural.

Mckenna Grace: “Just the way that he talks about them and his stories. Whenever I’m with Dan Aykroyd, like ‘yes, I wholeheartedly believe in ghosts.'”

Paul Rudd: “That’s one of the things that is really, kind of, fun about the Ghostbusters franchise. I remember seeing it as a kid and it’s like, ‘Wait a minute. This movie’s really funny, but, it’s also kind of scary,’ and there are ghosts on different levels. You get some a ghost-like slimmer, but, then you have a ghost that’s actually quite terrifying, like garraka, in this film.”

Holi Miami is set to bring a colorful celebration of dance, food, music, and more to Wynwood https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/holi-miami-is-set-to-bring-a-colorful-celebration-of-dance-food-music-and-more-to-wynwood/ Wed, 20 Mar 2024 00:10:09 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1424916 If you think So-Flo is vibrant enough, think again.

This Saturday Holi Miami is bringing out the festival of colors to Wynwood. It’s an Indian holiday that welcomes spring by dance, food, drinks, and getting dirty.

Priyanka Chopra: “I’m from India, rich in culture, in music, in entertainment, so clearly the Jonas Brothers didn’t make it over there.”

Priyanka Chopra loves teaching her hubby, Nick Jonas, about her country’s culture. One vivid Indian festival is Holi.

Dean Patel: “Holi the actual holiday itself is a celebration of releasing all your inhibitions and starting fresh in the beginning of spring.”

And you celebrate by exploding color in the sky.

Dean Patel: “There’s different ways to use the color. You can either sprinkle it in your hand and you wipe on peoples faces. Or you can put it on hand and throw it in the air or you can take the packet and just throw it around.”

Holi Miami is a family friendly event happening outside of Wynwood’s “fun dimensions,” it gets beautifully messy with color drops throughout the day.

Dean Patel: “It resembles an acrylic painting like an abstract painting. Multiple bright neon colors. All mixing together in that one instance. It’s a wow moment and it just drops and everybody’s with their phones out, their cameras out taking pictures, also dancing and partying.”

Ravi Jhangimal: “The way it’s done in Miami, in Wynwood, is bigger, better, and colorful. It’s a free-for-all all. It’s a concert. It’s not normally a concert down here in other places you go to. Here, we make it a concert because people want to hear the Indian music.”

Hear and see.

Dean Patel: “There’ll be performances by Nara. We have DJs, we do coordinated dances, and some of the dancers go out into the crowd.”

There’s also merch but let’s get to the good stuff…the food!

Ravi Jhangimal: “We actually have this year Ashoka Miami. We’re going to have three stations, one being the dosa station, which I know that line is going to be huge. We’re going to have a chaat line, which chaat is basically Indian street food, and then we’re going to have our main course line, which is where you’re going to find your butter chicken, butter paneer, all the main food.”

Tickets come with unlimited drinks. There’s a VIP option as well.

Ravi Jhangimal: “Everybody that’s coming, make sure you dress in all white. And make sure to wear something you don’t want to not get dirty because you’re gonna come out looking like a rainbow.”

Doors open at 2 p.m. this Saturday.

2 neglected bulldog pups looking for new forever home after being dumped https://wsvn.com/news/local/2-neglected-bulldog-pups-looking-for-new-forever-home-after-being-dumped/ Tue, 19 Mar 2024 23:02:26 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1424874 Two abandoned and neglected bulldog pups are receiving a second chance to find a new fur-ever home.

The two pups, Vinny and Frankie, were found in dire conditions on a street in Pembroke Pines by good samaritans. The pups were found sick, covered in rashes, and even had blood on their paws.

The pups were taken to Poochies in Pines, where they received treatment for their skin conditions.

“Vinny was found laying on the side of the road, basically just chilling out on the grass,” said Angela Goodwin, president of Poochies in Pines. “Frankie was found a little bit later in the day, in the same area, just crossing exactly University, and almost got hit by a car. So another good samaritan, separate from them, picked him up and also brought him here.”

Things are already taking a turn for the better as the pups are on the road to recovery. Despite their ordeal, the pups are in good spirits and are seen wagging their tails as they continue to recover.

Officials don’t know who is behind this cruel act but they do have some guesses.

“We think they’re probably from a backyard breeder and possibly from the same breeder because they are a similar breed…and they’re about a similar age,” said Goodwin. “Both vets think they are between a year and 18 months old. So possibly someone was breeding them, not taking care of them and just dumped them on the street.”

Currently, Vinny and Frankie are receiving more care at a volunteer foster family. The shelter is still working to find them a new home.

“Of course these dogs need a lot of care…both of them have to be bathed several times a week in a special bath and a dip,” said Goodwin. “They’re both very friendly, this was their first time meeting together today. They seem very trusting considering the condition that we found them in.”

If you are interested in adopting the pups or like to volunteer at Poochies in Pines, you can visit them here

Annette Bening, Sam Neill star in Peacock’s new mystery limited series ‘Apples Never Fall’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/annette-bening-sam-neill-star-in-peacocks-new-mystery-series-apples-never-fall/ Sat, 16 Mar 2024 00:11:10 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1422936 How well do you know your family? A new mystery series on Peacock explores the secrets we hide from those we love most.

Alison Brie (as Amy Delaney): “Happy retirement, Mom and Dad.”

Conor Merrigan Turner (as Logan Delaney): “We love you!”

Everything is not what it seems in Peacock’s newest drama, “Apples Never Fall.”

Annette Bening (as Joy Delaney): “You can spend a lifetime with someone as a wife or as a mother, but you can never really know who they are.”

Joy and Stan Delaney are set to enjoy their golden years, after selling their respected South Florida tennis academy, but their idyllic life is quickly disrupted.

Essie Randles (as Brooke Delaney): “Something bad has happened to Mom. I’ve left five messages. If she’s not returning our calls or texts, it’s because she can’t.”

Officer on TV: “Joy Delaney, mother of four, has gone missing.”

The list of suspects includes her husband. Of course.

Alex McTavish (as reporter): “Stan Delaney, did you kill your wife?”

Her children. I knew it.

Jake Lacy (as Troy Delaney): “You think we’re, like, this big, happy family?”

And a young woman who mysteriously entered their lives and then disappeared. Of course.

Conor Merrigan Turner (as Logan Delaney): “I said to my parents, ‘Don’t trust her.’ They wouldn’t listen.”

Star Annette Bening says there’s more to her character than meets the eye.

Annette Bening: “There’s a lot of secrets, and that has led to a kind of festering under the surface, that it sort of leads us to this moment that we find ourselves in as a family.”

Essie Randles (as Brooke Delaney): “You are an emotional chaos sinkhole, Amy, and I’m sick of it!”

Annette Bening: “That’s why I jumped in, because I thought, ‘Oh, this is gonna be a delicious bit of storytelling that has some edge to it, but it is also kind of satisfying.'”

Sam Neill plays the family patriarch.

Sam Neill: “He’s an alarming character. He has been known to have tendencies of a bully, but he loves his family ferociously.”

Annette Bening (as Joy Delaney): “Secrets can poison any family, and what you don’t know can hurt you.”

“Apples Never Fall” is now streaming on Peacock.

The Mavericks return to Miami for a musical homecoming event at the Arsht Center https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/the-mavericks-return-to-miami-for-a-musical-homecoming-event-at-the-arsht-center/ Fri, 15 Mar 2024 00:29:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1422567 Miami’s known for turning out some of the best hip-hop and reggae ever made. Don’t forget country rock with a Latin flair. That’s really big, too!

That’s exactly what The Mavericks, a legendary local group, have been playing for a long time. Deco sat down with frontman Raul Malo to talk about the band’s big gig in the Magic City this weekend.

Raul Mano (singing): “Here comes my happiness again, right back to where it should have been.”

The Mavericks are coming home. The band started out in Miami over three decades ago. On Friday, they’ll be hitting the stage at the Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall.

Raul Malo: “Every time you come back here, it’s a homecoming, you know. It’s great to see old friends, family, the city.”

The show’s a one-off before they start their big tour next month.

Raul Malo: “I would officially say this is the pre-kickoff, you know. This is almost like a really important exhibition game.”

Exhibition or not, the music still counts. Fans will hear all the big tunes, plus new stuff from their upcoming album, “Moon and Stars.”

Raul Malo: (singing): “Heaven’s got the moon and stars, funny how they always are.”

Raul Malo: “We’re trying out new songs. We haven’t really played them out on tour for months, kind of thing.”

The Mavs have come a long way since their first gig at Churchill’s Pub in Miami. That was back in 1989.

Raul Malo: (singing): “Well I hope you find a better way to get through my front door.”

Looking back, paying their dues in the Magic City has made for great memories.

Raul Malo: “Those days were a lot of fun, and I remember them fondly. I’m sure that there was bad stuff and whatever, but you always forget that.”

The band’s love of Latin music comes directly from Raul.

Raul Malo: “The Cuban culture, I grew up in it, I’m a product of it. I’m a product of my parents’ American dream.”

The Mavericks are ready to rock your world Friday night.

Raul Malo: “And hopefully touch a nerve or remind somebody of something.”

Raul Malo (singing): “Right now tomorrow’s looking bright.”

If you want to dance the night away with The Mavericks on Friday, you’ll need tickets.

‘She’s a scumbag’: Key Biscayne Police detective under fire for comment about mother of child sex abuse victim https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/shes-a-scumbag-key-biscayne-police-detective-under-fire-for-comment-about-mother-of-child-sex-abuse-victim/ Thu, 14 Mar 2024 02:24:41 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1422251 A Key Biscayne Police detective is under investigation after he was accused of making a controversial and demeaning comment about the mother of a child sex abuse victim.

Audio obtained by The Miami Herald appeared to show Key Biscayne Police Detective Fernando Carvajal insulting the mother of an alleged child molestation victim.

“She’s a scumbag. She actually screwed up the first [inaudible] case,” Carvajal is heard saying.

According to the Herald, the recording was taken about a month ago when Carvajal was conducting a formal interview on his cellphone.

The detective was investigating allegations against gymnastics coach Oscar Olea, who is accused of sexually assaulting minors he was instructing.

Adriana Alcalde, a former Broward County prosecutor, told 7News on Wednesday that comments like this could hurt the case against 38-year-old Olea.

“Calling her a scumbag, it’s just uncalled for. There’s no need for him to say that, there’s no need for him to comment like that,” she said.

Alcalde said that Carvajal’s comment may give the gymnastics instructor’s defense a leg up.

“They are going to question [Carvajal], why is he questioning the mother’s credibility?” she said. “It seems like he’s thrown a monkey wrench into this entire case, which seems to be a pretty solid case.”

Carvajal was on the stand days ago, providing insight into the case.

Key Biscayne’s police officer is now on the defense. The department’s chief, Frank J. Sousa, acknowledged the recording. In a statement, he wrote:

We have taken immediate action and began an administrative review, which is underway. The comments made do not reflect the values and hard work of the Key Biscayne Police Department.

When it comes to Carvajal, Sousa wrote:

Detective Carvajal immediately addressed this with me and was contrite, remorseful, and embarrassed.

The words nevertheless still sting in a serious situation.

Olea is due in court next Wednesday to face a judge for his arraignment.

South Florida gears up for St. Patrick’s Day weekend celebrations in Miami, Coral Gables https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/south-florida-gears-up-for-st-patricks-day-weekend-celebrations-in-miami-coral-gables/ Thu, 14 Mar 2024 00:34:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1422206 If you’re looking to party this St. Patrick’s Day weekend, then you’re in luck, because Miami is a pot full of gold-filled events.

I-rish we could attend them all, but maybe you can? Take a look!

Are you ready to paint the city green?

Irish eyes will be smiling upon Miami, as the St. Patty’s Day celebrations begin.

Michael Davidson: “It’s going to be a full night of live music.”

Wynwood Marketplace wants you to party with them!

Michael Davidson: “This Sunday, March 17th, from 2 p.m. to 3 a.m., we are going to be having the biggest Saint Patrick’s Day block party in Miami.”

He’s not kidding when he says the biggest.

Michael Davidson: “We are going to have 50,000 square feet fully activated — live music, an artisan market. We’re going to have a bunch of different food concepts out here, unlimited green beer.”

Best part: admission is free, and the first 500 people to RSVP get a free green beer before 9 p.m.

Michael Davidson: “This is a Saint Patrick’s Day tradition; people come back every single year. We are going to be packed again this year. Come check it out.”

Biscayne Bay Brewing Company, downtown’s first and only brewery, is also serving up St. Patty’s Day vibes.

Walter Harrison: “This is our first Saint Patrick’s Day celebration, so we want to make sure it’s an awesome one.”

And their happy hour is sure to leave you feeling lucky.

Walter Harrison: “The happy hour is going to $6 beers from 2 until 6 pm, $7 wines and $9 cocktails.”

But that’s not all.

Walter Harrison: “We’re going to have whisky flights, Irish nachos, we’re featuring our bay gimlet cocktail, as well as green beer all day long.”

Come prepared for fun, because…

Walter Harrison: “It’s going to be a Saint Patrick’s Day party like no other, so everybody, come, wear your green and come celebrate with us.”

Don’t stop the party, because John Martin’s is back for its annual Saint Patrick’s Day Festival.

Emi Guerra: “For the last 31-plus years, John Martin’s has closed down several streets in Coral Gables and celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day like no other.”

But this year is a little different.

Emi Guerra: “This year we are doing it two days: March 16th and the 17th.”

Two days of green fun, so take your vitamins, because you will need them.

Emi Guerra: “We close down four city blocks, we put live music show on. There are bars all over the place where we have incredible specials. There’s food for everyone as well. Everyone is welcome, and we look forward to having you.”

Brightline launches happy hour series with ‘Wine Wednesdays’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/brightline-launches-happy-hour-series-with-wine-wednesdays/ Wed, 13 Mar 2024 00:09:31 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1421845 For some people, the commute to and from work is the worst part of the day. The brightline train is looking to change that with its new happy hour series and it’s nothing to whine about.

All aboard or should we say all enjoy?!

Brightline has officially launched its new happy hour series called “Wine Wednesdays”.

Michael Merry: “For the month of March, every Wednesday we are going to do a happy hour from four to seven. It’s 50 percent off all of our glasses of wines”

That’s right! Guests can now enjoy wine at the Mary Mary bar inside any brightline station for as little as five bucks.

Michael Merry: “I wanted to celebrate with our commuters because we always have sold-out trains and it’s a great time for them to enjoy a little drink before they travel home to their loved ones and families.”

Or before you head out!

Wednesday, happy Wednesday!

But wine isn’t the only thing on the happy hour menu.

Michael Merry: “For our wine Wednesdays, we also curated some pairings to go with all of our wines. Things that are not traditional on our menus”

He means food. Compliment your white wine with a nice meat and cheese board. Your red wine with shrimp cocktail or mix and match!

Michael Merry: “It’s a great place to grab a snack on your way home, or on your way up to your flight out.”

But if you are in a rush and can’t stop at the bar. Be sure to grab a wine sample from the pink flamingo.

Michael Merry: “Here at the Miami station, we’ve partnered with the rosé pop-up. And they are going to travel from the Miami station, up to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm ending in Orlando on the last Wednesday of the month”

Elizabeth Dasch: “This is so much fun. I’m really excited that they are doing this on Wednesdays now. I love stopping by the station and getting a drink before I head home, but this takes it up a notch. This is really cool”

Mark Wahlberg talks about his role in the inspiring movie ‘Arthur the King’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/mark-wahlberg-talks-about-his-role-in-the-inspiring-movie-arthur-the-king/ Tue, 12 Mar 2024 23:54:41 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1421840 Mark Wahlberg is spreading “good vibrations” with a new flick. In “Arthur The King,” he plays the ultimate athlete, who meets a dog who’s the ultimate friend.

It’s based on true events where this dog follows him through an adventure race for days and miles. Marky Mark broke down what to expect. Check it out. Come on, come on. Sit … watch!

Running, climbing and kayaking for 10 days is adventure racing. Sounds tiring just thinking about it. Same for Mark Wahlberg.

Mark Wahlberg: “I was very excited about the opportunity to play the part of Michael. But then I realized how difficult and challenging it would be to make this film, physically to make this film. I’m a little older, and I don’t know how many more rounds I got left in me, but it was too good of an opportunity to pass up, that’s for sure.”

Juliet Rylance (as Helena Lindnord): “Just remember, Mikael, this race doesn’t define you.”

“Arthur the King” is based on the true story of a very determined racer and his new bestie, Arthur.

Mark Wahlberg: “This is basically his last chance at winning a world championship, and he’ll do anything to achieve that. He is probably a guy who is so focused and so committed that you can actually say he was selfish until he met Arthur and was faced with this choice and did the most selfless things.”

This stray dog followed the team for 435 miles through rain and shine.

Mark Wahlberg (as Mikael Lindnord): “Hey, what happened to you, boy? You don’t look so good.”

Simu Liu (as Liam): “Meatball? Look, somebody likes my meatballs. Hey, PAW Patrol, we have a race to win.”

The inspiring movie also attracted actors like Simu Liu.

Mark Wahlberg: “Simu’s fantastic. I mean, he plays Leo. You look at the guy, he looks like a movie star, so to be able to get somebody who has that much buzz in a part like this and really bring it to the table is fantastic.”

But the main star is this lovable and very loyal pup.

Mark Wahlberg: “So many people will hopefully find so many different things to be inspired by throughout the film. I think you’d be surprised by what you can accomplish if you’re willing to do the work, and you never know what you’ll find. Somebody or something will change your life forever, and certainly for the better.”

Local designer presents spring, summer collection during Stitch Lab Miami https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/local-designer-presents-spring-summer-collection-during-stitch-lab-miami/ Tue, 12 Mar 2024 00:06:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1421444 Women who love fashion want to stand out with one-of-a-kind pieces and Stitch Lab is the place to find them. The three-day event returns to the Miami Design District just in time for Women’s History Month. Let’s go shopping!

Tropicana vibes are on at Stitch Lab Miami! Celebrating it’s seventh birthday

Karina Rosendo, founder Stitch Lab: “Every year we pop up at the design district for an amazing shopping experience that lasts three to four days where you can actually meet over 40 designers from all over Latin America.”

This free spring fashion event is happening from March 15 through the 17.

Karina Rosendo: “Obviously we’re going to have swimwear, we’re gonna have a lot of resort wear.”

The marketplace showcases mainly female-owned collections.

Women empowerment, yeah!

Karina Rosendo: “Many of these designers are newcomers. The vibe is very much unique pieces, handmade, everything with a purpose. This year we’re also working with Shantall Lacayo.”

Miami local, Shantall, was the winner of Bravo’s “Project Runway” season 19.

Shantall Lacayo: “In this stitch lab season, I’m going to be presenting my latest collection biloho, spring summer 2025.”

Her shirts, skirts, and pants, are inspired by artist Salvador Dalí and the buttons, oh the buttons, are everything.

Shantall Lacayo: “You can find this artwork from Dalí in our prints, our details, our buttons, our cuts. The egg meant birth, love, and hope, that’s why the collection is called biholo.”

She’s repping Nicaragua.

Shantall Lacayo: “I like to design that women, make them feel unique. That women can go outside and feel like everybody’s looking at them, but at the same time it’s something that’s timeless.”

Speaking of timeless, over at the iconic Biltmore Hotel, Colombian designer, Renata Lozano is trying to make a statement.

Renata Lozano: “Most important thing in the world is to be comfortable. I love green, I love blue, like the sky, and I always try to use very organic fabrics.”

Now 305 based, you can mix and match her nature-inspired pieces.

Renata Lozano: “I call it a small, black sexy, not so sexy, have everything in one dress. You can take off the sleeves or put it on. I love what I do, this is my passion. I try to be fun and I try to find a place to connect with people.”

Stitch Lab is at Paradise Plaza on the third floor between Gucci and Chanel.

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-381/ Sun, 10 Mar 2024 01:18:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1420949 Here’s the bad news: we lose an hour of sleep this weekend.

Here’s the good news: there are six cool movies coming out, so who needs to nap?

These half-dozen hot new releases will keep your eyes open, for sure. Check ’em out in this week’s Showtime.

Jack Black (as Po, voice): “What is this place?”

Awkwafina (as Zhen, voice): “The best crooks and criminals live here.”

Jack Black (as Po, voice): “You’re a wanted criminal?”

Awkwafina (as Zhen, voice): “You sound surprised. Is it surprising?”

Po is in for a big surprise in “Kung Fu Panda 4.”

The big guy, voiced by Jack Black, thinks all will be well when he’s named the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace. Oh, how wrong he is.

Pyper Braun (as Alice): “Maybe we shouldn’t play together anymore, Chauncey. Maybe we shouldn’t be friends! No, no, no, no, no!”

If there’s one thing to be learned from watching “Imaginary,” it’s this: don’t leave behind the teddy bear you had as a kid. It won’t end well if you do.

Angela Bassett (as Lady Bayfort): “I need you to listen to me now: I don’t trust them. They may be royalty, but that doesn’t make them good people.”

Robin Wright (as Queen Isabelle): “Your hand, child.”

Nick Robinson (as Prince Henry): “Close your eyes. I’ve got you.”

[Prince Henry throws Elodie into the chasm. Elodie screams.]

Millie Bobby Brown gets lied to in a big way in “Damsel.”

The handsome prince she marries turns out to be a bad, bad man, and she’s got to fight to stay alive.

Cristiana Dell’Anna (as Cabrini): “We have to show America we are all people of dignity.”

Giampiero Judica (as Father Morelli): “Be careful, Mara. This place will eat you alive.”

She beat the odds. “Cabrini” is the true story of the Italian missionary who succeeded in creating better conditions for the poor kids of New York at the turn of the 20th century.

Danny Glover (as Jerry): “What kind of moron buys a house under such circumstances?”

[Dr. Phil Loder sobs.]

Danny Glover (as Jerry): “Are you crying?”

Peter Dinklage (as Dr. Phil Loder): “Sorry.”

Peter Dinklage has every right to shed some tears. In the dark comedy “American Dreamer,” his plan to finally become a homeowner turns into a full-blown nightmare.

Jermaine Fowler (as Wes): “This is a really bad idea.”

[Rod Rimestead throws up.]

Zac Efron (as Dean): “Aww, Jesus!”

John Cena (as Rod Rimestead): “I’ve been cold turkeying the booze. Ricky Stanicky’s in the program, remember?”

Andrew Santino (as JT): “Oh, Rod.”

John Cena (as Rod Rimestead): “It’s not what you think it is.”

John Cena plays a washed-up actor who gets the role of a lifetime in “Ricky Stanicky.”

Actually, he gets the role of somebody else’s lifetime. Sounds confusing? It’s not — but it is really funny.

Heather Mitchell (as Leona): “I want you to admit that Ricky Stanicky does not exist.”

John Cena (as Rod Rimestead): “Hey, mishpocha!”

Andrew Santino (as JT): “Stanicky!”

John Cena (as Rod Rimestead): “Oh, yes!”

OK, not really, but what’s not made up is the new show “Supa Girlz.” Deco dropped by Miami Northwestern Senior High for a dance lesson.

You’ve probably seen them go viral on social media. Big name celebs have copied their every move, but you have never seen the G-Girls of Miami Northwestern Senior High like this.

Traci Young Byron: “Every single girl who’s trying out for the team is brand-new. don’t think they really realize how much hard work it takes to become a G-Girl.”

The high school dance team, led by Ms. Traci Young Byron, is spilling the tea on what it’s like being a G-Girl in their new show AMC Networks show, “Supa Girlz.”

Traci Young Byron: “‘Supa Girlz’ is a show about a day in the life of a G-Girl,” said Young Byron. “It goes into their personal lives, it goes into their academic lives. It’s not just about what they do on the dance floor or at football games.”

But before the docuseries drops Thursday, the G-Girls showed off their best moves today at their school.

Destiny Goodman: “I’m super excited. I’m ready for the world to see Miami Northwestern G-Girls and our lives on and off the field.”

It’s not easy to join this team of scholars, either.

Traci Young Byron: “In order for the girls to be eligible to audition for my team, you have to have at least a 3.5 GPA.”

And that’s just the academic side.

Traci Young Byron: “Being a G-Girl is hard work. It’s even harder to remain a G-Girl. The level of excellence that is expected of these young ladies is through the roof. I make no apologies for that.”

Fortunately, the girls do not mind a little discipline.

Jaida Sumler: “It definitely challenges me to make sure I complete all of my school work, that I’m able to do all of the extracurricular activities I want to participate in.”

There’s a method to Ms. Tracy’s way of teaching.

Traci Young Byron: “My goals for the G-Girls is to become professional dancers. For those who don’t want to become professional dancers, it’s to be successful at whatever career they decide.”

But structure is not all you are going to see from this new show.

Traci Young Byron: “In ‘Supa Girlz,’ you can expect high energy, you can expect a little bit of drama, you can expect to see beautiful, young, talented ladies.”

The girls also have advice for any young ladies who want to join the team.

Destiny Goodman: “I would definitely say you need to work out, you have to be open-minded, you have to be persistent, you can’t give up.”

You can catch “Supa Girlz” when it premieres Thursday on AMC Networks’ ALLBLK streaming service.

Philanthropist awards UM medical center with $50 million gift to enhance their fight against cancer https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/philanthropist-awards-um-medical-center-with-50-million-gift-to-enhance-their-fight-against-cancer/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 00:18:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1419552 A South Florida medical center is getting a generous gift in its mission to fight against cancer.

A philanthropist, who has made South Florida his new home, made a transformational gift of $50 million that could make South Florida the epicenter of cancer treatment in the nation.

“Thank you for your commitment in winning the war against cancer,” said philanthropist Kenneth C. Griffin.

Doctors, scientists, and others working in the healthcare industry gathered on Tuesday at the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center to say thank you to Griffin whose donation will change millions of lives.

“This man has made such an incredible mark on this community,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

Griffin’s gift to the University of Miami will go towards enhancing research efforts to find the cure against cancer.

To support this institution was one of the easiest decisions that I’ve made in recent history,” said Griffin.

Levine Cava described the impact of the gift.

“It will double Sylvester’s research footprint as South Florida’s only national cancer institute designated research center. It will accelerate our efforts to care for patients with new therapies, clinical trials, that will likely be offered only here at Sylvester,” said Levine Cava.

The new facility includes a state-of-the art equipment, that is being constructed at UM’s medical campus, where innovative research will be taking place.

The goal of the research is to develop new therapies and expand ongoing clinical trials.

“With this team, we are leading the way to being one day closer to achieving our shared gold of ending the threat of cancer in our lifetime,” said Griffin.

The efforts will bring much needed hope to more than 12,000 South Florida families that are currently battling this devastating disease.

“The people in this room represent, in my view, the generation that will end this disease in america and in the world,” said Griffin.

“So within these walls, there will be breakthroughs foraged, and lives will be saved and futures will be re-written,” said Levine Cava.

The state-of-the-art facility is set to open its doors in 2025.

South Florida theater company unveils an Elvis experience at a secret location https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/south-florida-theater-company-unveils-an-elvis-experience-at-a-secret-location/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 01:17:50 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1419170 Elvis lives! Juggerknot Theatre Company is calling on the spirit of rock and roll through “conjuring the king”. It’s a one-person immersive show about an ultimate Elvis Presley fan, named Avery. Get ready to be all shook up. Here’s a sneak peek.

“Are these yours honey? screams”

Elvis Presley fandom started the underwear-throwing trend in the 60’s.

“Every scrapbook, every little clip, and everything of Elvis Presley. He’s got it all.”

The burning love for the king is still alive and kicking today.

“Singing the brain is flaming, I don’t know which way to go.”

Juggerknot Theatre company took the “stuck-on-Elvis” feels and turned them into a play called, “Conjuring the King”.

Tanya Bravo: “The audience is invited in as fan members. There are only 15 people that show up at a time. They get an email from Avery asking them to come to a secret location here in Miami.”

This intimate immersive show centers around, Avery.

Susie K Taylor: “Avery is a beautiful woman who’s obsessed with Elvis.”

And you’re not going crazy.

June Raven Romero: “We’re both very. Avery one and two. Avery 1, 1.5. Avery a and b.”

These two talents alternate between two shows, Wednesday through Sunday night and they make people dig deep to become an ultimate fans.

June Raven Romero: “There are certain things about Avery that are out of this world, and some could say crazy, but there are more things about Avery that are identifiable and universal.”

The multiple sets are total Elvis shrines to get you to rock and roll the night away.

Susie K. Taylor: “They’re having the best time. They’re like screaming, they’re dancing. They’re participating in everything Avery is doing.”

Tickets are $77 with a VIP option for a complete Elvis experience.

Tanya Bravo: “There are a lot of different surprises. There’s music. There’s a little bit of eating. There’s a little bit of drinking. There’s a lot of storytelling. There’s a lot of backstory of who she is. Hopefully, the message is that really at the end of the day you are the king.”

You’ll get the deets on the hidden Miami location once you buy tickets, which is available until April 28th.

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-380/ Sat, 02 Mar 2024 05:40:00 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1418403 Sometimes we all need a great escape, but vacations are expensive. Plus you have to pack, and that is so annoying. This week’s Showtime is filled with options that’ll help you escape reality from the comfort of home … or the comfort of your favorite movie theater.

Zendaya (as Chani): “What we do, we do for the benefit of all.”

Timothée Chalamet (as Paul Atreides): “I would very much like to be equal to you.”

Zendaya (as Chani): “Maybe I’ll show you the way.”

All’s fair in love and war — especially when it’s all happening in the highly anticipated blockbuster “Dune: Part Two.”

Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya are joining forces and fighting for their future. The star-studded sequel also stars Josh Brolin, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh.

Emily Tunon (as Lady Doppler, voice): “Megamind, is that any way to welcome your old crew?”

Trouble is brewing in “Megamind vs, The Doom Syndicate.” The former-villain-turned-hero has sworn to defend Metro City, but his old crew shows up and wants to launch the whole place to the moon. Now he’s gotta pretend to still be bad, while figuring out how to stop them.

Jeff Goldblum (as Jeff Harris, voice): “Who’s Tenorio Junior?”

Character in “They Shot the Piano Player”: “Tenório was one of the top figures of samba jazz during the bossa nova years.”

Jeff Goldblum (as Jeff Harris, voice): “What happened to him?”

Character in “They Shot the Piano Player”:(as voice): “Very strange story. He disappears just like this.” (snaps fingers)

Jeff Goldblum is getting animated in the docudrama “They Shot the Piano Player.” The film explores the real-life disappearance and presumed murder of a famous Brazilian piano player in the ’70s. Jeff voices an American music journalist who’s trying to get to the bottom of what happened.

Robbie Amell (as Connor): “I have to get someone out of the city tonight, a friend. If you do that for me, we’re even.”

Stephen Amell (as Garrett): “I’ll help you. But quick question first: what is it about me?”

It’s not Code Red, it’s “Code 8: Part II.” Stephen and Robbie Amell reprise their roles in the sci-fi sequel about a fictional city where having superpowers is against the law. And this time, they’re teaming up to help a young girl who’s being tracked and targeted by corrupt cops.

Paul Dano (as Hanus, voice): “I am like you, an explorer. Your loneliness intrigued me.”

Adam Sandler (as Jakub Prochazka): “Why are you here?”

Adam Sandler is questioning his sanity in “Spaceman.” No funny business here, ’cause this movie, starring him and Carey Mulligan, is a drama.

Adam plays an astronaut on a lonely mission, whose life back home is falling apart, and the only thing that can seemingly help him is a mysterious creature he discovers aboard his ship. Sounds totally safe and normal.

Adam Sandler (as Jakub Prochazka): “I just want to come home.”

Kate Winslet details new role in satirical HBO limited series ‘The Regime’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/kate-winslet-details-new-role-in-satirical-hbo-limited-series-the-regime/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 01:23:04 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1417965 Kate Winslet is definitely a queen in our eyes, but in the new HBO series, “The Regime,” she’s definitely taking on a different title. Kate is playing Chancellor, and you could say she totally rules.

Kate Winslet (as Elena Vernham): “Since I became your chancellor, we have grown considerably as a country. It is time to show America and the world precisely what we are worth.”

Kate Winslet is leading by example in the new HBO limited series, “The Regime.”

Kate Winslet (as Elena Vernham): “Have some pride. Let me do my work and be grateful, OK?”

Kids: “OK, sorry.”

Or is she?

Kate Winslet: “Elena Vernham wants to create change. She doesn’t always know exactly what to do other than to get people to love her, and she absolutely is delusional and believes that they really do love her.”

Uh-oh. That can’t be good.

Kate Winslet: “I had to kind of sift through the sort of crazy emotional rubble of her to find things that I found redeeming about her. I mean, I can honestly say I’ve just never come across a character like this in my life before.”

OK, OK, here’s the deal. Elena is the chancellor of a fictional European nation that’s falling apart behind its palace walls.

Kate Winslet (as Elena Vernham): “Who the [expletive] are all these people?”

Matthias Schoenaerts: “I took the liberty of inviting our people from the countryside.”

And, as she becomes increasingly paranoid about her position, she turns to an unlikely confidant.

Helper: “Madame Chancellor, Corporal Zubak.”

Kate Winslet: “Zubak comes into her life because she has a system within the palace of employing a protector.”

Kate Winslet (as Elena Vernham): “You’re here because you’re a nobody, do you understand? And that means I can trust you.”

Matthias Schoenaerts: “He’s in the process of transformation, and he’s discovering the world of power and how it works.”

Kate Winslet: “Elena and Zubak, they’re kindred spirits in some way.”

Matthias Schoenaerts: “However dysfunctional their relationship is, I think it’s probably one of the only places he truly felt safe and motivated to live with a purpose.”

Guillaume Gallienne (as Nicky): “I’d like to see her.”

Matthias Schoenaerts (as Corporal Zubak): “Is she expecting you?”

Guillaume Gallienne (as Nicky): “I’m her husband.”

Matthias Schoenaerts (as Corporal Zubak): “Is she expecting you?”

The dysfunction between the two characters only makes their interactions more fun.

Kate Winslet: “I’ve never laughed so much at the material that was in front of me as we did every single day.”

Kate’s co-star, Hugh Grant, agrees.

Hugh Grant: “It has brilliant humor and profoundly silly comedy that made me laugh a lot. “

Kate Winslet (as Chancellor): “Love this kingfisher blue. Try not to the blood on it.”

Kate Winslet (as Chancellor): “And so I bless you all, and I bless our love, always.”

“The Regime” debuts on HBO on Sunday at 9 p.m. and will be available to stream on Max.

Asian dishes, a three-course meal: Local restaurants have sweet deals for Leap Day https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/asian-dishes-a-three-course-meal-local-restaurants-have-sweet-deals-for-leap-day/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 01:25:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1417155 Twenty-nine. That’s a very special number. It only comes around once in a lifetime, and if you happen to be the month of February, once every four years.

Twenty-nine is also the price of some special meals on Thursday. Deco’s got the deets that’ll have you leaping all these deals.

Getting engaged on Leap Day sounds nice, but there are other ways of celebrating Feb. 29 — like taking in the tasty deal at Sriracha House in Miami Beach.

Emilio Benzadon: “We’re gonna give our customers that order one of the house favorites — one of Build Your Own Wok — we’re gonna give them a free milk tea and a free spring roll.”

The House prides itself on whipping up fast, casual, healthy Asian dishes. In this place, you take a wok on the wild side.

Emilio Benzadon: “We have egg noodles, rice noodles, glass noodles, udon noodles. You can add protein to that; it can be a regular protein like chicken breast, shrimp, steak, pork, but also, we have two vegan options.”

FYI, the spring roll that’s part of the deal? That’s vegetarian-friendly, too, and your thirst will be handled properly.

Emilio Benzadon: “We have two different types of milk teas, which is taro milk or golden milk tea.”

Natalie Macadar: “I love the vibe here. The flavors are bold, hot. It’s definitely healthy.”

Twenty-nine dollars also buys you some Leap Day love at S3 on Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Chef Carlos Rodriguez: “S3 stands for the name, ‘Sun, Surf and Sand,’ and also for ‘Steak Seafood Sushi.'”

Those last three dishes — steak, seafood, and sushi — are at the heart of the restaurant’s one-day deal.

Chef Carlos Rodriguez: “We’re gonna start with sushi, which is tuna, spicy tuna roll. The second one we’re gonna have is a noodle wok, which is lo mein noodles with shrimp in it, and then at the end we have steak, four ounces of churrasco steak, black garlic glaze on top.”

There’s actually a fourth “s” word involved in all this. They might have to change the joint’s name for a night.

Chef Carlos Rodriguez: “We’ll also have a special sake that day, so, yeah, I guess we’re becoming S4 that night.”

You get an 24 hours this year. Spending time at S3 sounds pretty good.

Chef Carlos Rodriguez: “Sushi, seafood, steak, ocean view, fire pit, sake. Why not?”

Lexi Heath: “I think it’s amazing. We are at S3, so to get steak, seafood and sushi all in one plate is perfect.”

You know you want to dive into one of these Leap Day deals.

4 local designers take center stage at the first-ever Women’s Fashion & Design Week https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/4-local-designers-take-center-stage-at-the-first-ever-womens-fashion-design-week/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 01:31:42 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1416697 The first day of spring is just a few weeks away, but you can get a head start right now by springing forward into fashion. Deco’s checking out a SoFlo event that’s celebrating girl power in the 305 by showcasing local designers.

Lady Gaga had the right idea. So did RuPaul.

From March 8 through 10, SoFlo styles will be front and center at the first-ever Women’s Fashion & Design Week.

Tayo Ishola: “Women’s Fashion & Design Week is a fashion week that is really just centered on women that have a voice, that have stories to tell through design.”

This celebration is all about girl power. That’s why it’s happening during Women’s History Month.

Tayo Ishola: “This is powered by the Wonder Woman initiative. It was very important to us to do it in a month that is already identified and dedicated to honoring women worldwide.”

The main event is the fashion show at the Betsy Hotel South Beach featuring four South Florida brands.

MoLuxe wants you to get all tangled up in their resort wear.

Ashlee Monroe: “Someone may look at my pieces and think it’s crochet, or they may think it’s knitting, but it’s actually knotting. Every knot is something that I actually did with my physical fingers and hands.”

These pieces can be rocked with swimwear or dressed up with pants.

And speaking of pieces you can transition. House Twenty Two is all about mixing comfort with style.

Melissa Ledezma: “What sets our loungewear apart from other brands is that we’re 100% silk. When we say loungewear, we mean pieces that are basic pieces — joggers, shorts but some statement pieces as well. You have a blazer, you have a suit. We want you to take the comfort of home with you wherever you go.”

Speaking of going places, you’re sure to turn heads by rocking these dresses from I Am Eido and Ayeakah.

Aryea Kolubah: “The brand is very inspired by bold colors and prints, silhouettes that accentuate the woman’s body, making her feel comfortable “

Not to mention, sexy!

Aryea Kolubah: “When she wears it, she just feels like a goddess, so it’s just about radiating power, empowerment, strength.”

I Am Eido is also keeping things colorful.

Tayo Ishola: “You’re gonna be seeing lots of color, for sure, from my designs. You’ll be seeing lots of prints — I’m really inspired by the African print — and then I’m very inspired by Miami. I’m bringing in some Spanish influence with the ruffles.”

Four local designers being highlighted at the show? I guess you could say it’s all by design.

Tayo Ishola: “I’m excited about just the aesthetics and just the beautiful designs that people have come up with for the show.”

The fashion show is going down March 9 at the Betsy Hotel.

‘Drive-Away Dolls’ stars Qualley, Viswanathan and Feldstein dish on making lesbian road comedy https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/drive-away-dolls-stars-qualley-viswanathan-and-feldstein-dish-on-making-lesbian-road-comedy/ Sat, 24 Feb 2024 01:46:00 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1415972 It’s drive time, baby. There’s a new movie out this weekend that’ll make you wanna hit the gas, all the way to your local movie theater. Deco’s getting behind the wheel with the cast of “Drive-Away Dolls” in the Big Apple.

Geraldine Viswanathan (as Marian): “I’m leaving down.”

Margaret Qualley (as Jamie): “I am, too. That’s my plan. Where are you going?”

Geraldine Viswanathan (as Marian): “Tallahassee, Florida. I’ve been unhappy.”

Margaret Qualley (as Jamie): “That’s why we take this trip together, honey babe. We get our act together, together.”

From heartbreak to road hazards.

Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan are hitting the road in the lesbian road comedy “Drive-Away Dolls.”

[Jamie opens car trunk.]

Margaret Qualley (as Jamie): “What?”

Geraldine Viswanathan (as Marian): “We should see what’s in here.”

Margaret Qualley (as Jamie): “I bet it’s locked.”

[The lock opens.]

But their trip to Tallahassee takes a crazy turn when they find a mysterious briefcase in their car.

Wait, wait … Tallahassee?! Why not Miami?

Geraldine Viswanathan: “I don’t understand it.”

Margaret Qualley: “Yeah, I don’t, either! I don’t have any problems with Miami. Doesn’t everybody get a tax break?”

Beanie Feldstein: “I’m going to Miami on Saturday. There you go.”

See? Their co-star, Beanie Feldstein, gets it.

Margaret Qualley (as Jamie): “I’m gonna help you break a big murder case.”

Beanie Feldstein (as Sukie): “That is about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. And I’m a cop.”

OK, OK, so the movie isn’t set in the Magic City, Boooo! But what would it look like if it was?

Geraldine Viswanathan: “Sorry I just like, like bikinis. And heels. Bikinis and high heels. I hear Miami and I kind of go, tut-tut.”

Margaret Qualley: “Miami is more of like a club vibe. It’s like, you’re going, you’re going out.”

Going out implies good driving music to get you hyped along the way, am I right?

Margaret Qualley: “Lana Del Rey. Jack. Bleachers. Shout out.”

Jack Antonoff (singing): “Friday night, killer queens. Hop a train, on the scene.”

Spoiler alert. “Jack” is Jack Antonoff from the band Bleachers — and he also happens to be Margaret’s husband! We love a supportive spouse.

Geraldine Viswanathan: “Miley.”

Margaret Qualley: Miley Cyrus.”

Beanie Feldstein: “My wife and I listen to Sirius XM The Bridge, which is all, like, ’70s folk rock.”

Geraldine Viswanathan: “Oh, my God!”

Beanie Feldstein: “A little Joni Mitchell.”

Geraldine Viswanathan: “Yes, Joni.”

Beanie Feldstein: “A little Carole King. Carly Simon.”

Margaret Qualley: “Taylor Swift.”

Taylor Swift: “Nice!”

“Drive-Away Dolls keeps things short and sweet, with the film clocking in at only 84 minutes. That is waaaay shorter than your average road trip.

So we wanna know, which of their past characters do the girls think would be fun to go on a vacay with?

Margaret Qualley: “Pussycat would have a good vibe. Like the Quentin Tarantino part.”

Geraldine Viswanathan: “Oh, yeah.”

Brad Pitt (as Cliff Booth): “Hello, hot stuff.”

Margaret Qualley (as Pussycat): “Looks like third time’s the charm.”

Geraldine Viswanathan: “I think maybe my character from ‘Blockers.’ She’s kind of a – she’s a party girl.”

Margaret Qualley: “I love that character. If I could chose one of theirs, yeah, that would be yours.”

Beanie Feldstein: “Well, I know Monica [Lewinsky]. And I love Monica, so why don’t I say Monica, and then we could go together? There you go.”

Beanie Feldstein (as Sukie): “Well, you’ve had a full day.”

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-379/ Fri, 23 Feb 2024 05:12:40 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1415592 Shook, bussin’ and salty are all slang terms that the young’uns use nowadays, and they perfectly describe the new flicks coming out this week. But ask Google what they mean, because we don’t have time to explain. All we can say is sit back, relax and cover yourself with a fuzzy blankie. Here’s this week’s Showtime.

Margaret Qualley (as Jamie): “They opened the box.”

Gordon MacDonald (as Cicero’s Waiter): “The case.”

Margaret Qualley (as Jamie): “And it was like really, really bad.”

Two besties go on a road trip to Florida for a change of scenery. On the way south, they get mixed up with some dummy criminals and somehow end up with a mysterious case. Ooo!

“Drive-Away Dolls” is an action-packed, raunchy comedy featuring A-listers like Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal.

One of the film’s stars, Margaret Qualley, told Deco why she thinks this movie is so important for young women.

Margaret Qualley: “I think being a woman dealing with sexuality and being in your young 20s can be kind of like embarrassing, and I feel like this is such a shameless take on that.”

Alan Ritchson (as Ed Schmitt): “I met this woman. She’s a mess.”

Nancy Travis (as Barbara Schmitt): “Perfect. She’ll fit right in.”

Hilary Swank is that messy woman in “Ordinary Angels.” This heartfelt movie is based on a true story about a hairdresser who helps a dying little girl.

She gets a whole community involved to raise money and even shovel snow. Talk about being an extreme influencer!

Hilary Swank: “I completely believe that angels are amongst all of us.”

Trevante Rhodes (as Zyair Malloy): “Mea is longing.”

Kelly Rowlan (as Mea Harper): “Mr. Malloy, I am your attorney. I am not your friend.”

Kelly Rowland is trading in her microphone for a briefcase in Tyler Perry’s “Mea Culpa”. She takes on a criminal murder case to defend a charming artist accused of killing his girlfriend. Umm, red flag.

But Kelly’s ambitious character falls for him, which isn’t a good thing.

Kelly Rowland: “Just that title alone made me nervous, to be completely transparent. But I like the fact that it made me get outside of the comfort zone.”

3 local fashion designers talk about SHEIN’s program allowing them to build their own brands https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/3-local-fashion-designers-talk-about-sheins-program-allowing-them-to-build-their-own-brands/ Thu, 22 Feb 2024 01:58:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1415057 The fashion industry is ever-changing, and the latest styles cost an arm and a leg. What better way to keep up than designing your own threads?

That’s what the fashion site SHEIN is aiming for through its program called SHEIN X. Deco sat down with some local designers to hear all about it.

For the global retail company SHEIN, “empowering creativity” is not just a slogan. It’s a lifestyle.

The fashion site is helping local designers reach their full potential, thanks to its SHEIN X program.

Emily Workman: “We launched the SHEIN X designer incubator program back in 2021, really as a way to empower independent designers to build their own brands and to remove some of the barriers that are typically associated with the fashion industry.”

And these Miami creators are taking full advantage.

Bojana Brown: “I heard about the program last year, so I decided to apply, and I was very happy when they contacted me and offered me to work with them.”

Bojana Brown has been creating her knitwear line, MyWayInStyle, since 1996. Now she does it on a global scale.

But she isn’t the only one.

Lala Beltrán: “When I got my first collection with SHEIN, I had people from Panama texting me like, ‘Hey, this is cute. What is this?’ I’ve been walking around and sometimes see people wearing my clothes, and I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, that’s mine.'”

SHEIN X guides all of its participants through the process of bringing their designs to life, and the support from such a massive fashion outlet is worthwhile, they say.

Dayana Rosario: “It feels really rewarding, Especially when you launch a collection, and then you see the reviews under every style and you see people like it. I think it’s just so rewarding to see people actually like what I make.”

This isn’t just a one-off, either.

Emily Workman: “With our three designers here in Miami, they all have multiple collections with us. They have been with us for a couple of years.”

And you may be wondering: how do you get in on this program? Well, listen up.

Emily Workman: “Some of our designers find us through the online application process, and some we find through social media platforms or sometimes fashion career websites.”

Think you have what it takes?

Emily Workman: “We are looking for designers who reflect our diverse customer base and who connect with our customers, so we really are open to all kinds of designers with all different visions.”

To find out how you can support the Miami designers featured in this story and how to apply to the SHEIN X program, the links are posted below this story.

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-378/ Fri, 16 Feb 2024 02:21:13 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1413256 If you want a suggestion of what to do this weekend, we recommend sleeping in, but if you want catch a movie, we suppose you can do that, too. There are a ton of new movies out, and we are giving you the lowdown in this week’s Showtime.

Subway commuter: “New York City is a whole new level of crazy these days.”

Dakota Johnson (as Cassie Webb/Madame Web): “This is an emergency! Get off the train! That man is trying to kill you.”

Dakota Johnson is out to save lives in “Madame Web.” In the Marvel movie, Dakota’s a paramedic who develops psychic powers.

But she must use her new powers for good. Apparently, she can’t just pick winning lottery numbers. Bummer.

Jennifer Lopez (as Artist): “What are you guys doing here?”

Alix Angelis (as The Quiet One): “We think you may be a sex addict.”

Jennifer Lopez (as Artist): “What?”

Brandon Delsid (as The Lover): “Maybe.”

Jennifer Lopez is spilling the tea. Well, sort of.

Her new musical film, “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story,” is a reimagining of the superstar’s highly publicized — and often scrutinized — love life.

Liam Hemsworth (as Kinney): “Reaper, you there? Reaper?”

Russell Crowe (as Reaper): “We’re here, playboy. You’ve got to get your ass on the move, son.”

Character in “Land of Band”: “Come on, soldier!”

Russell Crowe is the eyes in the sky in “Land of Bad.”

When a Delta Force team is ambushed in enemy territory, a rookie officer, played by Liam Hemsworth, must rely on an Air Force drone pilot to guide him and his team to safety.

Caleb Bellavance (as Franklin Armstrong, voice): “Do you want to have…? Excuse me. Making new friends can be hard. I’m Franklin Armstrong.”

Etienne Kellici (as Charlie Brown, voice): “My name is Charlie Brown.”

The Peanuts gang is back in “Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin.”

Newcomer Franklin is having trouble fitting in. Not to worry, though, because his new pal Charlie Brown knows just the way to help him make friends: winning the soap box derby race.

Kingsley Ben-Adir (as Bob Marley): “Reggae’s the people music.”

Character in “Bob Marley: One Love”: “You know you’re a superstar?”

Kingsley Ben-Adir (as Bob Marley): “I ain’t a superstar.”

Don’t worry about a thing, because the Bob Marley biopic is here.

“Bob Marley: One Love” follows the life and career of the legendary reggae artist. But in the movie, everything was not all right.

James Norton (as Chris Blackwell): “Not everyone likes what you’re saying. For you own safety, you need to stop.”

Miami Dolphins, Nike team up to give gear to girls flag football team at Dr. Joaquín García High School in Lake Worth Beach https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-dolphins/miami-dolphins-nike-team-up-to-give-gear-to-girls-flag-football-team-at-dr-joaquin-garcia-high-school-in-lake-worth-beach/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 22:15:11 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1413136 LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — A girls flag football team received a big donation from the Miami Dolphins, and a major sports brand is also helping the girls gear up.

The Dolphins and Nike paid the new Dr. Joaquín García High School flag football team a visit in Lake Worth Beach.

“Having a chance to receive that ourselves, especially as a new school, is a great opportunity,” said Camila Carmona, the flag football team’s running back. “The stuff is super amazing, so I think it’s super cool.”

Since West Palm Beach is where girls flag football all started, it was only right to help out the Bulldogs.

“We chose Joaquín García High School because this is the first year that they’re having a girls flag football program,” said Rashauna Hamilton, senior community relations director for the Dolphins. “Here in South Florida, Palm Beach County is where girls flag football started, and so it’s really important, when we get a new program in a new school, that we do all that we can do to encourage girls to play the game.”

Being a new team will come with some challenge, but the new Dolphins and Nike gear will help boost morale.

“Most have never played this sport before, so they are a little nervous going into the sport, but I think this actually motivated them,” said Carmona. “[They] saw what good can come out of this sport, the fun, cool things you get to experience.”

As the first game of the season closes in, the Bulldogs now feel like they’re ready for any challenge.

“This is a boost. This is truly a boost for them, because they still don’t know and understand what this is all about,” said Carlton Smith, the team’s coach.

The team will have their first game Thursday night.

New exhibition in Miami dives into the life of painter and inventor Leonardo da Vinci https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/new-exhibition-in-miami-dives-into-the-life-of-painter-and-inventor-leonardo-da-vinci/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 02:15:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1412822 The Mona Lisa. The Last Supper. Just those two works alone would secure Leonardo da Vinci’s place in history as an artist.

But he was so much more than a painter. A new exhibition in SoFlo reveals what an amazing inventor he also was.

Yeah, that’s right, da Vinci! You won’t need a special code to check out the great man’s talents in “Da Vinci: Machines and Robotics,” an exhibition making its U.S. debut in Miami’s Security Building.

Geoffrey Bash: “This exhibition are on loan from the da Vinci museum of Florence, Italy.”

There are copies of the Italian genius’ many inventions scattered around the world. The ones in this exhibit are considered the most authentic because of who constructed them.

Geoffrey Bash: “It’s the only da Vinci exhibition that is actually built by artisans of Florence.”

Da Vinci was obviously a workaholic. He created hundreds of inventions. The cream of the crop is here.

Geoffrey Bash: “You’re going to see and experience and interact with more than 60 of them here in our exhibition.”

You can really get a hands-on feel for Leo’s creations.

Geoffrey Bash: “Each exhibit has a label. Wherever the label is a green heading, ee encourage you to put your hands on it with care, operate the invention.”

That means you can use the flywheel thing for continuous rotary motion; the Archimedes screw, a hydraulic machine that lifts water; or a drum that, well, does what a drum does.

The guy was so far ahead of his time, it’s kind of frightening. He invented the first car, the first helicopter and the first robot. My God, he’s exhausting.

Here’s a big reason why this exhibit is so important.

Geoffrey Bash: “Leonardo built, actually, only very few of his inventions, and none of those have survived today.”

From his artwork to his inventions, “Da Vinci: Machines and Robotics” shows the vision of a most creative man.

Geoffrey Bash: “His artwork, however, is survived, and this is why we know da Vinci more for his art, generally speaking, than all of the inventions and genius things that he designed.”

“Da Vinci: Machines and Robotics” is happening right now.
