Broward County Sheriff’s Office and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue units responded to the scene of the shooting along the 3900 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard, at around 8:30 a.m., Monday.

According to BSO, the shooting happened at the drive-thru. Upon arrival, deputies discovered one individual suffering from a gunshot wound.

“When the shooting occurred, occurred outside, again, in the drive-thru area,” said BSO spokesperson Miranda Grossman. “Now, luckily, during all of this, no one else was injured. This happened at around 8:30 this morning, when people are getting their coffee, getting their breakfast and heading to work, and could’ve been much worse. They located him in the drive-thru area of the Dunkin’ Donuts behind me, so outside of it.”

Paramedics transported the injured individual to an area hospital for medical treatment. Their condition is currently unknown.

Deputies said that the alleged shooter is an employee of Dunkin’ Donuts and has been detained.

It is unclear if charges will be brought against the suspect.

As of Monday afternoon, investigators have not disclosed the suspect’s identity.

Initially, deputies believed the shooter had barricaded himself inside the Dunkin’, so they surrounded it and then went inside. But the suspect wasn’t there.

“They weren’t sure if the shooter had barricaded himself inside the Dunkin Donuts. He did not, and he had actually fled,” said Grossman.

Witnesses described how the incident played out.

“And a guy said that one guy shot another guy, three times, he heard three gunshots,” said one woman.

Authorities said the scene is still active and residents are urged to avoid the area until further notice.

Fort Lauderdale remembers historic 2023 floods that overtook city; Broward House reopens https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/fort-lauderdale-remembers-historic-2023-floods-that-overtook-city-broward-house-reopens/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 21:48:08 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1433166 As South Florida gears up for a sunny weekend ahead, Broward County residents are remembering the catastrophic flooding that overtook their communities one year ago.

Fort Lauderdale residents are remembering the more than two feet of rain that fell in their city in a matter of hours on April 12, 2023.

“It’s really scary. Streets were flooded everywhere,” said one resident.

“I didn’t know the water would keep coming higher and higher and higher,” said another resident.

The bull’s-eye of the rain was Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, but neighborhoods in the area saw historic flooding as well.

“I lost all my albums, four or five drawers of pictures,” said Tammy Green.

7Skyforce flew over the floodwaters as they overtook people’s front yards and driveways.

“You can see water, just water everywhere, in people’s front yard, backyard, and their driveways,” said 7Skyforce’ reporter Ralph Rayburn.

Broward House was one of the buildings that was hardest hit by the floods.

“We service some clients living with HIV, substance abuse, mental health,” said Broward House CEO Nicole Burrell.

The facility, which was home to the people in the community most in need, was damaged due to the flood.

“Two of our buildings, we couldn’t even get into for about four days,” said Stacy Hyde, the former CEO of Broward House

The building was forced to close after more than two feet of water rushed inside. It was ultimately demolished.

“There was water and muck all throughout the building,” said Hyde.

But Broward House was rebuilt, and they hosted a grand opening on Friday night to mark one year of the floods.

“We are just hoping that when clients come in, they can truly feel at home, right?” said Burrell. “For the time that they are here, that they can see it as being a home that they are proud to live in.”

“We were unusable for the past year,” said Matthew Patterson. “We were under construction ever since, displacing 74 individuals.”

Burrell said 30 of the 72 beds are already filled up.

Due to Broward House reopening their doors to the public, many feel a sigh of relief knowing people in need have a place to go.

“This grand opening means a lot to me,” said Patterson. “This place took me when no one else wanted me.”

The residents who experienced the floods will never forget the images and videos of people leaving their homes on boats and air mattresses. Other footage showed people helping each other out of stuck cars near the airport.

On Friday, neighbors met at the American Legion in the heart of Edgewood to reflect on the experience.

“Going forward together is the most important thing to me,” said one participant.

“I thought it was important to bring people together, because this neighborhood really was ground zero for a majority of the flood,” said Kitty McGowan, president of Edgewood Civic Association. “Going forward together is the most important thing to me.”

“The night of the flood, I grabbed my father’s medication, my two dogs and my ferret,” said Tammy. “We didn’t have insurance, so we’re still not completely back together.”

The residents hung pictures of the devastation and shared stories of the historic flooding.

“I spent the entire night in the darkness with water above my knee and trying to keep my dog on the bed so he didn’t jump off and drown, and they rescued us by canoe,” said Thom George.

Some people, like George, only moved back into their homes a few months ago.

Fort Lauderdale officials, including Mayor Dean Trantalis, called the flooding a thousand-year event.

“As this was, some say, a thousand years storm,” said Trantalis.

As a result of the major floods, Fort Lauderdale City Hall was lost in the storm, but a year later, Trantalis is hopeful.

“We’re not 100% there, but where we are, as a city, is moving forward,” he said.

The mayor said that in the next 10 years, nearly 30 neighborhoods will get new storm drains. Some of that installation is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

When asked whether it will be enough to battle the floods, Trantalis replied, “Even the most sophisticated system will only accommodate three to four inches of rain per day. This is 26 inches in five hours.”

Due to those drainages not yet complete, some residents tell 7News they still get nervous anytime it rains.

Residents said they hope to never relive those days again, as the rebuilding of the city continues.

911 calls released as family pleads for more information on hit-and-run that left Miramar woman in coma https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/911-calls-released-as-family-pleads-for-more-information-on-hit-and-run-that-left-miramar-woman-in-coma/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 21:47:09 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1432785 The 911 calls from fellow runners, who found the Miramar woman after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver, have been released.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning just after seven in the morning.

According to Miramar Police, Onyxia Delinois was out for a run Saturday morning, heading eastbound along Miramar Parkway near 183rd Street, when a driver hit her and took off.

The group of women who were running with her dialed 911.

“Tell me exactly what happened,” a dispatcher said.

“Um, we are a group of runners and one of our friends is on the side of the road. It seems that she may have gotten hit,” said a female caller.

Delinois was rushed to the hospital and underwent an emergency brain surgery, but she now remains in a coma.

Doctors say they are very concerned about her recovery and expect her to be in the hospital for weeks or months.

“We are extremely concerned about her neurological recovery,” said Memorial Regional Hospital Dr. Andrew Rosenthal. “I expect that she’ll be in the hospital for several weeks or months.”

Delinois’ husband, Roosevelt Delinois, left devastated by the tragedy as his wife remains on life support in the hospital.

During a press conference on Wednesday, he was joined by Miramar Police and doctors, who have been treating his wife, and left his wife’s bedside for a few minutes to plead to the media for justice.

“My wife is amazing, she does so much for me and our family, She’s selfless.” Roosevelt said. “This is not her fault. She did not do this. Someone else did this to her and just left her there.”

Roosevelt hopes the public can provide additional information to help catch the driver behind the wheel.

“I just want someone to say something, someone to come forward,” said Roosevelt.

Police are now searching for the driver responsible for hitting Onyxia and leaving the scene.

“You have to stop. You have to provide some aid. That can make the huge difference whether that person survives,” said Miramar Police Department Officer Jose Rosales.

GoFundMe was created to assist with Delinois’ medical expenses.

If you have any information on this hit-and-run or the driver’s whereabouts, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

According to Miramar Police, Onyxia Delinois was out for a run Saturday morning, heading eastbound along Miramar Parkway near 183rd Street, when a driver hit her and took off.

“This was a heartless act and we just ask that whoever did this comes forth,” said Jose Rosales, traffic homicide investigator for Miramar Police.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Delinois’ husband, Roosevelt Delinois, was joined by Miramar Police and doctors who have been treating his wife and left his wife’s bedside for a few minutes to plead to the media for justice.

“My wife is amazing, she does so much for me and our family, She’s selfless.” Roosevelt said. “Someone else did this to her and just left her there.”

Onyxia is a passionate runner who is part of a group that runs several times a month.

After being struck, she was rushed to the hospital, where she now remains in a coma.

“She has a very, very serious critical head injury. She underwent emergency brain surgery and since that time, she’s been in a comatose state, I’m hoping that she regains function” said Memorial Regional Hospital Dr. Andrew Rosenthal.

Doctors say they are very concerned about her recovery and expect her to be in the hospital for weeks or months.

Meanwhile, Roosevelt has not left his wife’s side.

“I’m devastated,” he said. “How would you feel if this was your family member? How would you feel if this was your mom, your wife or your daughter?”

Police are now searching for the driver responsible for hitting Onyxia and leaving the scene.

“We’re looking for a vehicle that may have right damage to the vehicle in the front or side,” Rosales said.

Police hope that someone knows something about the person who did this.

“We would like to remind everybody that if this is your family, what would you like to be done,” said Rosales.

“She has helped me tremendously in my life, and I just want someone to say something, someone to come forward and say who did this to her,” said Roosevelt.

‘Don’t bring your trash to our backyard’: Leaders, environmentalists unite against proposed incinerator site near Everglades https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/dont-bring-your-trash-to-our-backyard-leaders-environmentalists-unite-against-proposed-incinerator-site-near-everglades/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 12:45:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1431851 South Florida leaders, along with environmentalist groups, voiced their concerns to the Miami-Dade Commission regarding the proposal of constructing a new incinerator facility near the City of Miramar.

Speaking at a news conference held Tuesday, Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam did not mince words about the possibility of a waste-to-energy facility that would include a trash burning incinerator being built next to the city.

“Our community has been here for decades. Don’t bring your trash to our backyard,” he said.

The county’s search for a new incinerator comes more than a year after a fire destroyed the previous facility in Doral, slashing the amount of trash that the count is capable of processing.

Back in February 2023, firefighters battled a four-alarm blaze for more than a week, causing nearby residents, especially those with respiratory ailments, to refrain from going outside due to the smoky conditions.

Since then, Miami-Dade has shortlisted a few potential sites as of last summer.

While no decision has been made about where to build the new site, Miramar officials fear it will land less than a mile away from West Miramar, at the Opa-locka West Airport, which raised concerns of environmental hazards and health complications in the community.

“There are nearly a quarter million Broward County residents within the direct vicinity that would be impacted by the construction of this site,” said Messam.

Environmentalists against the incinerator’s construction near the Everglades point out the concerns over local wildlife, including protected and endangered species. They also mention the threat to the region’s air and water quality.

“While this is an issue of where to build the incinerator, it’s also an issue of not building the incinerator at all,” said Anagha Iyer with the Broward Juniors Sierra Group.

“Studies have shown that the areas near waste incineration experience higher rates of cancer asthma and reproductive complications,” said Mackenzie Marcelin with Rising Florida, an organization that advocates for marginalized communities. “The burning of trash also releases harmful and toxic pollutants into the atmosphere affecting the respiratory, cardiovascular, immune and, like I’ve mentioned, reproductive and nervous systems of those who live nearby.”

Other municipal leaders in Broward standing alongside the residents closest to the proposed incinerator.

“We have to come up with viable solutions to that dynamic because it’s poisoning our water,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Angelo Castillo. “It’s poisoning our land, our air, our lungs — it’s affecting our health. There has to be a better way to do it.”

“Incineration is not right right across the border. Incineration is not right anywhere,” said Southwest Ranches Mayor Steve Breitkreuz. “We’ve come a long way. There are better solutions and that’s where we need to be going.”

Miramar residents voiced their concerns to local leaders Tuesday morning.

“It’s completely intrusive to our community,” said residents Judy Jawer. “The air, the water, the environment, of course, in terms of the Everglades, but I’m considering what’s really going to happen, from a health standpoint, to the people around me.”

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has advocated for moving the facility to a county-owned airfield several miles from the Everglades, with the alternative locations in Doral and near the existing incinerator in Medley. No final decision on where to build the new incinerator has been made.

“Do the right thing and build this site on a more suitable site,” said Messam. “A site that has less impact on the environment, a site that impacts fewer people and a site that just makes sense.”

“If the waste-to-energy plant is not good for the residents of Doral, it’s not good for Miami-Dade County, then it is not good for the residents of the City of Miramar,” said Miramar City Commissioner Yvette Colbourne.

After the flames demolished the waste plant in Doral, the amount of trash processed by Miami-Dade County has been cut in half. Miami-Dade’s Public Works director resigned following the fire.

Tuesday afternoon, Levine Cava issued a statement about the proposed incinerator site. It reads in part.

“Our priority continues to be to minimize the impact of the facility’s operations to the community and the environment, as we prepare our community and our infrastructure for the future.”

Miami-Dade officials said they may reach a decision about where to build the facility at some point later this year.

10-year-old boy shot in drive-by shooting in Pompano Beach speaks out on terrifying moment; new surveillance video released https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/10-year-old-boy-shot-in-drive-by-shooting-in-pompano-beach-speaks-out-on-terrifying-moment-new-surveillance-video-released/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 16:42:12 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1431618 A 10-year-old boy who suffered a leg injury in a drive-by shooting in Pompano Beach is speaking out about the scary moment.

Speaking with 7News on Monday, Noah West described the terrifying moment when he suddenly found himself under fire along the 1700 block of Northwest Fourth Street, March 21.

“I was by myself so, when I was coming, I was walking this way toward right there by the street, and I’m walking, and I see this dude on a scooter with a ski mask on, and I’m like ‘That’s suspicious,'” he said, “and then I just saw him hop off the scooter, pull out a gun and start shooting.”

When asked at what moment he realized he had been shot, West replied, “When I started running, ’cause when I started running, the bullet hit me, and I fell, and then I got back up.”

West said he ran almost all the way home, which is close to the park where the shooting occurred, but stopped when he saw someone with a phone in order to call for help.

Once Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue units arrived at the scene, they transported the 10-year-old to Broward Health Medical Center.

Thankfully, West’s injuries were not life-threatening. He is expected to be OK but is still recovering, as he is walking with a limp.

“When I was in the hospital, I thought I couldn’t walk,” said West.

West has since returned to school and is getting stronger every day.

West’s mother, April Lofton, said her son has been doing better in the weeks since the shooting.

“He’s still shaken up. He still definitely just wants to stay in the house, pretty much stay to himself, but his spirits are pretty good,” Lofton said.

West said he stopped going to the park but just wants to be a kid.

“I just don’t come. I don’t come over here no more,” he said.

When asked whether he will return someday, he said, “Yeah, I’ll come back someday.”

The boy’s comments come as newly released surveillance footage from BSO captured the moment when West was left injured during the drive-by shooting.

The 10-year-old is seen dribbling a basketball while he crossed the street. As he makes his way to the other side, a gray sedan approaches him, and someone inside the vehicle is seen firing shots in his direction.

Several children in the area hit the ground when the shots rang out, and West was seen running away after he was shot in the leg.

Video shows the man on the scooter takes off in the other direction.

The victim’s mother and law enforcement officials believe that he was not the intended target of the shooting.

There was a scooter in the area, which is what Noah’s family believes was the intended target.

Now, the family wants whoever was behind the shooter to be caught.

“We’re getting the word out, just making sure that another parent doesn’t have to experience this. It’s imperative to find these suspects,” said Lofton.

BSO detectives continue to search for the victim and those responsible for the shooting.

If you have any information on this shooting or the whereabouts of the subject or subjects involved, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Fort Lauderdale bridge reopens after deadly crane collapse; investigations underway https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/fort-lauderdale-bridge-reopens-after-deadly-crane-collapse-investigations-underway/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 10:02:30 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1430811 The aftermath of the deadly crane collapse on the Southeast Third Avenue Bridge has left one construction worker dead and two people injured as the structure reopened Friday morning.

The incident, which occurred near the New River around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, also led to the damage of a Tesla SUV and a minivan after debris fell onto the bridge, creating a significant hole on the road that led to the closure of the bridge. Initially, the collapse raised concerns about the bridge’s structural integrity.

“When the piece of crane fell through, it punctured directly through the entire concrete deck and broke through the steel,” said Anh Ton, Broward County Director of Highway and Bridge Maintenance.

While workers focused on the significant hole left by the crane, officials said the drawbridge stayed aligned.

“If alignment is off by half an inch, it wouldn’t work. Fortunately, when we tested the bridge last night, the alignment was still in place,” said Ton.

The bridge, owned by Broward County, had repairs done to it overnight but officials said they are temporary. Crews are set to eventually close down the bridge again for more in-depth repair work, which they said, will occur during overnight hours to minimize disruptions.

“Unfortunately it’s downtown Fort Lauderdale, so that is the sense of urgency, to make sure the bridge is functional,” said Ton.

Officials said it will take four weeks to design the permanent fix and then another couple months to install it.

But for now, Broward County’s structural engineers, who spent most of Thursday night on the bridge, said it is safe for travel.

“I drove through it myself multiple times and I wouldn’t do that unless I felt it was completely safe,” said Ton.

7Skyforce was overhead Friday morning where a steel plate was seen covering the hole made by the collapse. Traffic was moving along the road as investigators gathered at the high-rise under construction where the crane was being used.

“We had a one-inch steel plate that was large. We put it on top of where that hole was, that way when the vehicles go over, it serves as temporary deck to split the load out,” said Ton.

According to fire rescue officials, a man and woman were transported to Broward Health Medical Center in stable condition. Both victims were released from the hospital on Friday morning.

The construction worker killed in this incident fell with one of the loads off the side of the building and succumbed to their injuries, police said. The identity of the deceased worker has not been released.

Mark Cerezin, the Tesla driver, recalled the moments when he narrowly avoided the piece of the crane, crediting the vehicle’s design to his survival.

“It was just an instinct. It was just a reaction, peripheral reaction, slamming on the brakes,” said Cerezin. “I have a Tesla, it’s all glass on top, so I saw here coming down, and that’s when I gauged, I guess, by a split second. Had I not slammed as hard as I had with my foot, I’m not here speaking to you.”

Cerezin did not need to be taken to the hospital but his Tesla was damaged, saying the front of his car didn’t appear to be there.

“I hit the front of my car. It was like slow motion. And then I just saw the front of my car just disappeared. It just, like, sliced it,” he recounted. “Then that piece of metal bounced in the air and then went to the right and landed on another car.”

Experts said that had the Tesla not taken the brunt of the impact, the bridge would’ve been damaged far worse.

After speaking to the crane operator, fire officials said the crane fell in the process of being adjusted.

“It is my understanding from the construction company that they were doing a process at the time called stepping the crane. It was not the crane that failed; it was a platform that they had equipment staged on that had failed at the time of the incident,” said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan.

Witnesses and local residents described the chaos and their shock.

Jason Taub, who was working from his apartment, said he had been watching the crane for about 20 minutes and started to record the crane being hoisted up on his phone, but as soon as he stopped, he heard a strange sound.

“All of a sudden I hear a pop,” said Taub. “And then I see the piece tumbling and tumbling down.”

“It looked like it was falling in slow motion and I screamed ‘Oh, my God’, and I see it fall right on top of the car,” said a woman who lives on the ninth floor of the building in front of the construction site. “Right away, you can see the driver walk away, but you can hear her screaming, but it was so scary to witness.”

Video obtained by 7News shows Cerezin comforting the woman who was driving the minivan, who is seen visibly distraught.

Cerezin said he took off his shirt to help the woman. He is in disbelief that he hit the brakes just seconds before the crane fell down.

“There was a lady that was bleeding, and I took off my shirt and put compression and helped her,” he said.

Cerezin said he feels grateful and lucky to be alive.

“From, of course, this day forward, I’m just happy to go home to my wife. I’m happy to go home to my family and to my friends. I’m just so grateful,” he said.

On Friday, the 911 calls were released showing distressed drivers watching the incident unfold.

“A crane just broke down on a car on the bridge,” said one caller. “Oh my God, I can’t believe what I just saw.”

Fire rescue officials have since secured the crane and the area has been cleared of debris and damaged vehicles as investigations by several agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Florida Department of Transportation, continue.

The closure of bridge caused significant traffic and stopped marine traffic along the New River, but since it’s reopening, all traffic has returned to normal.

KAST Construction, the company working on the high-rise where the crane was being used, has been contacted for comment on this incident.

DeSantis stops in Davie to sign bill that will fund environmental protection projects https://wsvn.com/news/politics/desantis-stops-in-davie-to-sign-bill-that-will-fund-environmental-protection-projects/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 16:52:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1430515 Gov. Ron DeSantis made a South Florida stop to sign a bill that will help fund environmental protection projects.

During Thursday’s stop in Davie, DeSantis described how more money will be coming to Florida from the Seminole Indian Tribe after signing Senate Bill 1638 into law.

The money will be allocated into restoration programs for the Florida Everglades and the South Florida Water Management District. The agency is expected to receive millions of dollars each year.

“For necessary repairs and upgrades to both the Central and South Florida water management systems, so this is a really big deal,” said DeSantis.

The Seminole Indian Tribe fought hard to offer table games in a sports book. In 2021, the tribe entered an agreement with the state to offer sports book gambling through their app at their property in Hollywood.

As part of the agreement, the Seminole Indian Tribe will share upwards of $750 million a year with Florida.

“Historic day indeed, and as a native Floridian, this truly warms our hearts,” said Seminole Tribe of Florida Chairman Marcellus Osceola Jr.

The breakdown of how those funds will be distributed includes the following:

  • $150 million for South Florida Water Management District
  • $100 million for the Resilient Florida Grant Program, which helps residents prepare their homes for storms
  • $100 million for the Florida Everglades to assist with the removal of invasive species

Anything left over will go toward water quality improvement grant programs.

“You’re looking at about $450 million, probably in future years, every year, for quality improvement grant programs,” said DeSantis.

The governor said the signing of this bill will be a win-win for Florida and the programs that will be benefited.

“This bill is going to now dedicate the bulk of the Florida gaming revenue from the Seminole Tribe Compact to conservation efforts, and this is going to be done in ways that are going to be very beneficial,” he said.

Police: Husband accused in murder of wife, 2-year-old son in Plantation suffered from PTSD, had troubled marriage https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/police-husband-accused-in-murder-of-wife-2-year-old-son-in-plantation-suffered-from-ptsd-had-troubled-marriage/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 20:50:12 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1430211 Police have released additional details about the deaths of a woman and her 2-year-old son as, investigators said, they have proof that the father was behind the murders.

Plantation Police said 40-year-old Jean Carlos Aponte killed his wife, Sara, and their young son, Ethan, before he unsuccessfully tried to take his own life.

The young boy was just days away from celebrating his third birthday. A party had been scheduled for this weekend but now, the house is silent and empty.

The gruesome discovery was made last Tuesday by Sara’s parents, who came to the house when they couldn’t get in touch with their daughter.

Investigators said the parents found Sara on the kitchen floor, covered in blood, and stabbed 28 times. They called 911. Police later found the 2-year-old boy in the backyard pool. Both had been stabbed to death.

The parents’ second child, a 4-month-old, was crying but unharmed as she sat in an infant swing.

According to police, Aponte had overdosed and was found unconscious in the bedroom.

New unredacted pages from the arrest report detail how Sara’s father told detectives “that Jean suffered from [post-traumatic stress disorder] from his deployments in Iraq while he was in the Marine Corps. He stated that he believed that Jean managed his “issues” well most of the time but knew him to have a few anger outbursts.”

Sara’s mother also spoke to police, telling them “she knew that Jean suffered from PTSD and had some aggression issues and was taking medication.”

The mother and sister of Aponte also met with police and told them that he “suffered from depression and was recently in constant pain.”

According to the newly released pages, Aponte’s marriage was in trouble. Detectives said that, on the day of the murders, one of the baby monitors recorded an argument between the couple with a woman’s voice saying, “I hope she was worth it. Don’t come after my money.”

An hour earlier, Aponte sent his wife a text message that read “I understand I broke your trust.”

Ninety minutes later, on the baby monitor, police say, a child is heard screaming.

As police investigated, they found a text message from Sara to a contact saved as mom that read “Call 911.” That text was never sent.

While Aponte recovered in the hospital, before he was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, police monitored his recovery and took notes of what he said while in and out of consciousness.

According to the arrest report, at one point, an officer said he admitted to the crime by saying “I did it.”

Aponte has since been discharged from the hospital and is now behind bars at the Broward County Jail.

Crews extinguish fire on yacht in Fort Lauderdale https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/crews-extinguish-fire-on-yacht-in-fort-lauderdale/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 16:12:50 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1430102 A yacht that caught on fire behind a home in Fort Lauderdale prompted a swift response by rescue crews.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue units arrived at the scene on Marathon Lane in Fort Lauderdale’s Riverland neighborhood, Wednesday morning.

Smoke was seen coming from the 110-foot yacht’s lower decks.

7News cameras captured firefighters putting out the fire as they worked to keep the flames from spreading to other boats.

Area resident Scott Garten said his wife alerted him.

“When I was on the boat, my wife called me up, she said, ‘There’s fire trucks in the front,’ from the cameras,” said Garten, “but there’s no electrical, so I don’t know how it caught fire. It’s solar panels on there; I would think it’d be the battery chargers.”

No one was on board the yacht when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Dashcam video shows the hours-long pursuit on I-95 that left many stranded for hours https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/dashcam-video-shows-the-hours-long-pursuit-on-i-95-that-left-many-stranded-for-hours/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 22:36:03 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1429819 New dash camera video from the Florida Highway Patrol shows a new look at a Friday afternoon pursuit on Interstate 95 that left many people stranded during rush-hour traffic.

The video, from the point of view of the troopers involved, shows how troopers used one of their tactics to bring the pursuit to an end.

The driver, identified as 34-year-old Jacqueline Marie Maxson, is seen dangerously weaving through traffic as troopers follow right behind her.

Moments later, a trooper used a PIT maneuver to bring the speeding car to a stop, but not before it crashed into another SUV.

The hours-long pursuit was a nightmare for commuters trying to get home on Friday night. Some of them were stuck on the highway for most of the evening.

“Three hours,” said a driver.

“An hour and a half, two hours,” said another driver.

“About an hour and a half,” said a third driver.

The chase began as troopers tried to conduct a traffic stop on the BMW coupe in Northwest Miami-Dade near 103rd Street. It ended near Hollywood Boulevard.

7News cameras captured the occupants of the red Jeep that was hit by Maxson getting out of the car. The occupants were seen comforting each other after the commotion. One of them was transported to the hospital.

Maxson was arrested. She appeared in bond court on Saturday.

“First appearance of the felonies at this time being in a moving, or attempting to flee or elude a police officer,” said Judge Carmen R. Cabarga.

As she was in the back of the cruiser, footage shows she complained about being hot.

“Can I please get a little bit of air?” Maxson said.

Maxson attempted to get comfortable in the back seat after her dangerous driving brought I-95 to a screeching halt on a busy Friday afternoon, endangering thousands of drivers.

7News cameras captured Maxson walking into jail after her wild ride on I-95.

“Maxson, I found probable cause on both counts and am granting a bond of $7,500 on count one and I’ll give $500 on count two,” said Cabarga.

Maxson was taken to jail but has since posted bond and was released.

South Florida locations providing free protective glasses and hands-on activities for upcoming solar eclipse https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/south-florida-locations-providing-free-protective-glasses-and-hands-on-activities-for-upcoming-solar-eclipse/ Mon, 01 Apr 2024 22:16:19 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1429375 As South Florida prepares for next week’s partial solar eclipse, officials are stressing safety first.

Millions will experience a total solar eclipse, and millions more, including people in South Florida will see it partially.

As exciting as it may be to witness an eclipse with your own eyes, not wearing protected glasses could cause permanent vision damage.

South Florida organizations, including the Frost Science Museum in Miami and Broward County Libraries, are providing free protected glasses and hosting special activities.

“We have a planetarium show, which will explain what is happening with the eclipse. We’ll have hands-on activities,” said Douglas Roberts with the Frost Science Museum.

At the Broward County Main Library, children are welcome to watch the eclipse from their location and learn more about what is happening.

“What the eclipse is, how often they happen. If they have their glasses, they can go out on a terrace and take a look at it,” said Jill Sears with the Broward County Library.

The total eclipse will cut across Texas and head northeast.

States in the direct path will see almost total darkness for more than four minutes, as the moon passes between Earth and the sun.

“It’s gonna be a little longer, because the moon is closer in its orbit to Earth,” said Heather Futrell, NASA’s Heliophysics Program Executive.

If you can’t get a pair of protected glasses before the partial eclipse, officials say, it is safest to stand under a tree and look down.

“The way the leaves cover up each other make pinhole cameras, and you’ll see projections of millions of little crescents on the ground,” said Roberts.

7News live coverage of the total eclipse will begin Sunday with Jack Royer in Dallas, TX.

ATV driver arrested in Fort Lauderdale after cross-county police chase appears in court https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/atv-driver-arrested-in-fort-lauderdale-after-cross-county-police-chase-appears-in-court/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 16:29:34 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427316 An 18-year-old ATV driver who was taken into custody following a nearly hour-long police chase that began in Miami-Dade and ended in Broward appeared in court.

Anthony Angel Perez faces several charges, which include resisting an officer, moving traffic violation and fleeing police.

During his court appearance on Tuesday, a judge set his bond to $5,500 and ordered that he cannot drive without a court order.

“I’m ordering no driving of any vehicle, of any nature, whatsoever without a court order,” said the judge.

Perez’s attorney describe him an ambitious young man.

“2.3 GPA, advising he will be graduating, wants to go to college and study engineering,” his attorney said.

Police on Monday attempted to pull over Perez for a traffic stop.

When he refused to stop, Perez led officers on the wild hour-long cross-county chase.

“He’s traveling northbound. All those cars are traveling southbound,” said 7Skyforce Reporter Ralph Rayburn from up above. “Right, there he goes, on cue. And around those vehicles that are stopped at the intersection.”

He was eventually taken into custody in Oakland Park after his ATV ran out of gas.

“Officers getting him to stop, now they are gonna knock him to the ground and secure him and make sure he’s not carrying any weapons,” said Rayburn.

His joyride was over as FHP troopers took him to his next stop: jail.

Perez has since paid his bond and bonded out of jail.

ATV driver taken into custody in Fort Lauderdale after cross-county police chase https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/atv-driver-taken-into-custody-in-fort-lauderdale-after-cross-county-police-chase/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 15:52:03 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1426900 An ATV driver was taken into custody following a nearly hour-long police chase that began in Miami-Dade and ended in Broward.

7 Skyforce hovered over the scene Monday morning in Miami, where the driver first eluded Miami-Dade Police after being told to stop.

The pursuit continued throughout Miami as the driver weaved in and out of traffic.

“As you see him go on the wrong side of the roadway there. Police officers corralling him,” said 7Skyforce Reporter Ralph Rayburn.

Officers decided to follow the ATV driver from a safe distance to protect other drivers on the busy road.

“They are following now and what we heard them say is ‘We’ll just follow him until he runs out of gas'” said Rayburn.

The driver was then seen heading northbound on Interstate 95.

At one point, 7News cameras captured the driver appearing to check how much gas he had left.

Several police helicopters were also above the scene as they continued their pursuit and three police cruisers were also seen following the driver on the highway.

The Florida Highway Patrol was notified about the incident, as well as the Broward Sheriff’s Office, as the driver made his way towards Broward County.

As the rider continued his trek, at one point he exited I-95 and headed eastbound on Stirling Road.

“He goes through the intersection, now he’s going to be coming westbound underneath us,” said Rayburn.

7Skyforce continued to follow the driver as he returned to I-95.

“He’s gonna have the upper-hand as far as wheeling through and around traffic with that ATV. He’s going off road there. Right, there he goes, on cue. And around those vehicles that are stopped at the intersection,” said Rayburn.

An FHP trooper could also be seen pursuing the rider.

The rider was seen riding through big trucks and driving the wrong way on I-95.

“He’s traveling northbound. All those cars are traveling southbound,” said Rayburn.

The driver is seen driving over express lane poles and crossed through incoming traffic.

He then exited West Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. He drove on the sidewalk until he finally stopped and put his hands in the air.

“Looks like he’s going to give up the ghost here,” said Rayburn.

The driver eventually stopped in Fort Lauderdale and was swiftly taken into custody.

“Officers getting him to stop, now they are gonna knock him to the ground and secure him and make sure he’s not carrying any weapons,” said Rayburn.

7News cameras captured the suspect being handcuffed.

Drivers on their morning commute described the Monday madness they witnessed.

“I was so shocked. I just stood there in silence,” said Shamari Nelson. “Everything happened so fast.”

Nelson said the officers did their job.

“Impressive how policemen did their jobs,” said Nelson.

No injuries were reported.

FHP has identified the suspect as 18-year-old Anthony Angel Perez. He faces multiple charges including resisting an officer, moving traffic violation, and fleeing police.

Tornado watch issued for South Florida as stormy weather pummels region; flood advisory issued for parts of Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/tornado-watch-issued-for-south-florida-as-stormy-weather-pummels-region-flood-advisory-issued-for-parts-of-miami-dade/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 19:41:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1426141 South Florida experienced severe weather on Friday as heavy rain and gusty winds rumbled through parts of Miami-Dade, and conditions only worsened after the sun went down.

Friday night, the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Miami-Dade, Broward, Collier and mainland Monroe counties until 3 a.m. on Saturday, as the conditions are present for twisters to occur.

A tornado warning was later issued for a small portion of coastal Miami-Dade. It has since been allowed to expire.

Hours earlier, 7News’ Stormtracker showed one round of rain moved through the region from the Gulf of Mexico, with most of the heavy activity already moved offshore and a second round is expected on Friday night.

As of 9 p.m., heavy rain was moving across the Florida Keys and through Southwest Florida with sporadic thunderstorms through the area.

A flood advisory is in place for parts of Miami-Dade County along Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, Downtown Miami, and Coral Gables until 1 a.m. on Saturday.

Another flood advisory for places like Surfside, Little River, North Miami is in place until 12:45 a.m.

A flash flood warning was in place for Miami Beach until 10:45 p.m.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials urge drivers to remain off the roads due to the severe weather. Motorists who have to be on the road are advised to drive with caution and keep a distance between vehicles.

7News cameras captured the wheels of some cars submerged in the water as the rain went on into the night. Restaurants placed sandbags at their entrances to prevent water from coming in.

People walking out of restaurants had to take off their shoes to walk through flooded areas. Some places across the Miami Beach area had ankle-deep floods.

“These are pretty new shoes, so we decided not to waste them,” said one person.

Stubborn Seed, a restaurant located along the 100 block of Washington Avenue, had to close for the night and cancel reservations because water was entering the business.

People who spoke to 7News said the flooding occurred fast.

Diners said they walked into Stubborn Seed at 8 p.m., and when they left the restaurant at 9 p.m., they were met with area flooding.

Cameras captured a few guys walking home on foot as the floods caught them by surprise.

“We were just at dinner and sort of got caught up in this mini storm,” said the man.

“Was it not flooded when you got to dinner?” said 7News’ reporter Samantha Sosa.

“Yeah, it was absolutely normal,” said the man.

“It was just raining and then you came out to this?” said Sosa.

“Yes, it was less than one hour, I would say,” said the man.

The storm created traffic in downtown Miami near the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Meantime, over at the Health District, the visibility was tough for drivers in the area, as lightning lit up the night sky.

The forecast expects Miami-Dade and Broward to see two to four inches of rain through Saturday evening. Strong winds are expected through Saturday at 8 p.m. Some places could see wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour.

In Broward County, a street flood advisory was issued from Fort Lauderdale all the way south to Hallandale Beach until 10:30 p.m.

7News cameras in Hollywood captured minimal rain and flooding in the area. City officials said they have their water pumps ready to move any of the flooding water if necessary, but have not needed to use them as of 10 p.m.

As for the Florida Keys, the area is expected to receive three to five inches of rain through Saturday evening.

As of 10 p.m., moderate to very heavy rain was still being monitored across the Keys.

All of South Florida is under a flood watch and a wind advisory.

As for total rainfall, North Key Largo reported over four inches of rain in the past 24 hours. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport set a new record with over two inches of rain in the past 24 hours.

The forecast for Saturday is for downpours in the morning. Some lingering rain will stick around for the rest of the day.

10-year-old boy stable after being shot in Pompano Beach neighborhood https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/10-year-old-boy-stable-after-being-shot-in-pompano-beach-neighborhood/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 02:12:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425860 Authorities are investigating a shooting in Pompano Beach that sent a 10-year-old boy to the hospital.

Broward Sheriff’s Office and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue units responded to the scene along the 1700 block of Northwest Fourth Street, just after 6:30 p.m., Thursday.

Paramedics transported the patient to Broward Health Medical Center with injuries listed as not life-threatening.

Speaking with 7News hours later, the victim’s mother, April Lofton, identified him as Noah West.

“He’s doing good. Basically, the doctors assessed him. He’s doing really good; he’s in stable condition,” she said.

Lofton said Noah was walking his friend home after playing basketball at nearby Hunters Manor Park when a teenager drove by on a scooter.

“This guy is on a moped, a scooter, with a face mask on and just started shooting,” she said.

Lofton said the gunman fired a buckshot that hit her son multiple times in the leg and butt.

The concerned parent said deputies knocked on her door.

“BSO came to my home and said that, ‘Your son was involved in a shooting,'” she said.

A security camera in the neighborhood shows Noah running from the park to his house nearby.

Lofton said this was the worst news she could have ever expected to hear.

“I was traumatized, I was definitely traumatized. As a parent, my worst nightmare was that, you know, what’s going on with my child,” she said.

7News cameras captured a group of deputies gathered at the scene.

Deputies cordoned off a portion of Northwest Fourth Street while they investigated. Most of the crime scene tape focused around two homes.

Noah continues to recover in the hospital. More than anything, his mother is just happy that he’s going to be OK.

“We’re just waiting for everything. They’re going to keep him overnight just to make sure none of the buckshots went to any vessels or any arteries,” said Lofton.

Noah, a fifth grader, will be home from school next week for spring break, but instead of having fun, he’ll be recovering from a gunshot wound.

BSO’s Violent Crimes Unit detectives continue to investigate this incident.

“I feel like this is a great community. The kids should be able to come outside and play and be children, and then you have these other younger adults that are doing these types of things,” said Lofton.

If you have any information on this shooting, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Suspect dead after police-involved shooting at Fort Lauderdale hotel; officer shot to make full recovery https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/suspect-dead-after-police-involved-shooting-at-fort-lauderdale-hotel-officer-shot-to-make-full-recovery/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 13:31:19 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425601 A police-involved shooting at a Holiday Inn Express hotel in Fort Lauderdale left a man from Margate dead and sent an officer to the hospital, police said.

Aerial footage from 7Skyforce showed a heavy police presence surrounding the hotel along Southeast 17th Street, just west of the causeway, approaching 15th Avenue, Thursday morning.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police Chief William Schultz, the incident began around 7:39 a.m. when police were notified via a text to 911 of a suspicious incident.

“The caller reported that he had killed someone inside the hotel room,” said Schultz.

When officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, investigators said, they were met with gunfire.

“Shots were fired at the officers at that time. Our officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, at which time the suspect barricaded himself in that same room,” said Schultz.

Investigators said an officer was hit and rushed to the hospital.

“Coming in as a shooting call. It’s gonna be for an officer down,” a dispatcher was heard saying in radio transmissions.

“Look at this [expletive], bro. Like, look,” a man is heard saying in cellphone video showing a Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue ambulance pulling into the hotel.

Thankfully, the officer’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Back at the hotel, police called in the department’s SWAT unit.

“A SWAT call was initiated and entry was made. The suspect was discovered dead inside the room,” said Schultz.

FLPD identified the suspect as 46-year-old Karl Chludinsky of Margate.

Police said that no one else was inside the room at the time of the shooting.

https://twitter.com/JackRoyer/status/1770810299261563208?s=20

The injured officer was transported by FLFR to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was treated and released. A second officer suffered minor injuries unrelated to gunfire and was treated on the scene by FLFR. Both officers are adult males.

The shooting takes place as college students descend on Fort Lauderdale Beach to enjoy spring break. The hotel, located blocks away from the sand, was far from empty at the time of the incident.

Two young men who are staying at the hotel spoke with 7News hours after the incident.

“We thought that someone was banging on our door. We heard it, we jumped on the floor, and we just laid there,” said a guest.

“Just gunfire, just, ‘boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,'” said the other guest.

Before they cleared and reopened the busy road, police towed a white pickup truck from the hotel’s parking lot.

In total, three Fort Lauderdale Police officers fired their duty weapons in response to the incident. All three will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the incident.

2 pepper-sprayed employee, fled with $12K in purses from Neiman Marcus at Sawgrass Mills Mall, police say https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/police-subjects-pepper-spray-employees-flee-with-purses-from-neiman-marcus-at-sawgrass-mills-mall/ Tue, 19 Mar 2024 21:56:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1424866 Police are on the search for two men who, they said, stormed into a Neiman Marcus at Sawgrass Mills Mall, smashed a glass display and made off with pricey purses before pepper-spraying an employee during their escape.

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Neiman Marcus Last Call inside the shopping center, located at 12801 W Sunrise Blvd. in Sunrise.

According to Sunrise Police, the subjects went inside the store, looked around, came up to a case that had expensive purses, broke the glass case, took the purses and ran out of the store.

Investigators said the subjects, who covered their faces, fled in an unknown vehicle after the robbery.

The Sunrise Fire Department responded to the mall to treat the employee hit with the pepper spray.

7News cameras shows the security gates of the store were activated, closing the store for the day following the robbery.

Police are now looking at surveillance video from around the mall.

Further details regarding the suspects’ descriptions and the vehicle are currently unknown as the investigation continues.

Employees and customers described how the incident played out.

“An alarm went off. People coming out coughing, saying there is like a weird smell, and then later on a lady said, ‘You’re right. That was mace’,” said Adi Alic, a security guard.

A couple and their children who are visiting the area from Kentucky said they were turned away when they tried entering the store.

“Employees sent home. Nobody can go in there. I just think that’s absolutely crazy. This is the first I’ve ever heard of it,” said Kimber Rednour.

The family said that Neiman Marcus is their favorite store, and they’ll have to come back tomorrow.

“Cops was zooming up and down,” said Larry Wilson. “Every day that, bad people.”

Detectives said the stolen purses have an estimated value of $12,000.

Alic said bold incidents like these are a concern for him.

“I don’t like seeing that kind of stuff. It just worries me, you know?” said Alic.

No injuries were reported. Sunrise Police said they don’t know what the subjects look like.

If you have any information on this robbery or the subjects’ whereabouts, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Bodycam footage released after man killed in police-involved shooting in Davie https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/bodycam-footage-released-after-man-killed-in-police-involved-shooting-in-davie/ Mon, 18 Mar 2024 21:48:51 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1423509 Newly released body camera footage captured the moment, police said, officers were forced to fire on a man in Davie.

Davie Police and fire rescue responded to the scene at the 14500 block of Southwest 24th Street on Friday, where there were reports of an unresponsive man.

911 calls of that report were also released by police.

“Tell me exactly what happened,” said a dispatcher.

“I woke up in the middle of the night to go to my dad’s room and I found him face planted on the floor and he doesn’t have a pulse,” said the caller.

While paramedics were attending to that person, who, according to his family also died, the man appeared on the front porch.

A loved one told 7News that the man who was fatally gunned down by Davie Police officers following the confrontation was 39-year-old Steve Amann.

The body camera footage obtained by 7News showed Amann approaching officers after he was loitering in the area.

“This guys showed up out of nowhere,” said an officer. “Apparently he’s a friend of him. He went with him earlier. The guy upstairs is a recovery addict. These two did fentanyl and heroin today.”

Family members said that Amann was friends with the man who was unresponsive at the home and was called to go check up on him.

At one point, officers asked Amann if he is caring any weapons.

In another part of the footage, Amann was seen reaching for something behind his pants and then making a shooting stance towards officers. The object that Amann pointed was a confirmed by officers to be a cellphone.

Police then drew their weapons and shot him.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Amann’s family said that he lost his mother days before he was shot.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is normal whenever there is a police-involved shooting.

Mother critical of deputies’ use of Taser on knife-wielding 11-year-old son; BSO say deputies had no choice https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/mother-critical-of-deputies-use-of-taser-on-knife-wielding-11-year-old-son-bso-say-deputies-had-no-choice/ Thu, 14 Mar 2024 23:55:54 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1422574 Authorities said they were forced to take down an 11-year-old boy with a Taser inside a Pompano Beach apartment, but his mother said the responding deputies’ actions were unnecessary and have caused lasting effects on her son.

Surveillance video from inside the unit along Ocean Boulevard captured the moment Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies deployed the Taser, then approached and surrounded the child, Jan. 20.

Investigators said the boy had threatened himself and his 10-year-old sister.

Speaking with 7News on Thursday, the children’s mother, Samantha Hinton, shared her account of the tense moments that preceded the encounter with deputies.

“That day, my son had got really mad, and he had grabbed a knife, and he was going after my daughter,” said Hinton.

Wesley he was mad at his sister about a video game.

“I got upset because my sister was antagonizing me, so I did grab the knife, got upset,” he said.

Despite deputies’ efforts to disarm the boy without using force, authorities said, deputies shocked him with a Taser.

Hinton said the incident harmed her son.

“Ever since that day, my son, he doesn’t sleep much, he doesn’t eat much, and he’s very disturbed by this,” she said.

Hinton said she is still upset with the agency and doesn’t agree that deputies should have used a Taser on her child.

But BSO spokesperson Carey Codd said they did exactly what needed to be done.

“Our deputies who responded saved the life of this juvenile male and prevented anyone else who was inside that residence from being injured,” said Codd.

A 911 call appears to have come from within the home.

“He has a knife!” said the caller.

“Is anybody injured?” asked the dispatcher.

“Nobody is injured yet!” said the caller.

On the call, deputies can be heard pleading with Wesley to “put the knife down.”

In their report, deputies wrote, “This would go on for between 30-40 minutes.”

When asked whether he complied with deputies, Wesley replied, “Well, yeah, kind of.”

Hinton said her son did followed the deputies’ orders to drop the weapon, and he was still shocked.

“He trusted them. You know, he throws his hands up in the air, he says, ‘I trust you,’ he backs away from the weapon, and then they Tased him,” she said.

However, surveillance video shows Wesley appearing to almost immediately reach for the knife after he initially put it down, and that’s when when deputies deployed the Taser.

This is not the first time that deputies have been called due to Wesley’s behavior.

“Yes, 13 times,” said Hinton.

In their most recent report, deputies wrote, Wesley “has been placed under a Baker Act 10 times previously.”

The child was Baker Acted following the Jan. 20 incident as well. Neither of his parents rode with him, but BSO took him to the hospital.

“And hopefully started the process where this male juvenile can get the appropriate care and connected to the resources that he desperately needs,” said Codd.

Hinton said she is sharing her story in hopes that deputies can undergo further training, but BSO officials said it was their training that kept everyone safe.

17-year-old charged with trespassing at Coral Springs Charter School after being expelled https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/17-year-old-charged-with-trespassing-at-coral-springs-charter-school-after-being-expelled/ Wed, 13 Mar 2024 20:20:47 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1422039 A 17-year-old boy was arrested after, police said, he trespassed into a South Florida school following his expulsion, triggering security concerns among students, parents and officers.

According to police, the teen entered Coral Springs Charter School, located at 205 N. University Drive, during a fire drill and went into a classroom with other students.

The teen was not wearing a uniform and did not have an ID. It’s unclear how he went into the school undetected.

Video recorded by a student in the classroom showed the teen standing at the front of the class and talking with other students. The school’s principal and a school resource officer then entered the classroom where the boy was arrested.

“They discovered the guy within three minutes, that was pretty impressive,” said a parent.

The principal, Gary Springer, was heard scolding the teen in the video.

“You must be crazy right now!” Springer said.

When the student started responding to the principal, Springer screamed, “Enough!”

Moments later, Springer is heard saying, “We ain’t going to see you for a while.”

7News spoke with several students at the school who said the teen was a student at the school before he was expelled, adding they don’t know why he choose to enter the school without permission.

“I don’t know, like, you don’t need to sneak in to come in the school? You can, like, go in and you can get, like, a pass, and you can talk to everybody,” said a student. “If you, like, graduated, most people that graduated, they come back with a pass, and you just talk to everyone, but he just snuck in.”

At one point, the teen was seen in the video writing on a board in the classroom. In another video clip, he is seen sitting in the front row as a teacher walked past him.

Police said he was not armed and did not make any threats while he was at the school.

“Sometimes things happen. I’m sure whatever happened, they will review what caused it and try to fix that so that kind of thing doesn’t happen again,” said a parent.

Springer credited the students for alerting adults about the incident. He released the following statement:

“We are very proud of the quick action our safety team took to remove him within minutes of us being alerted to his presence. We have already taken important measures to address this and all procedures and protocols with our staff and will continue to implement ways to ensure our campus remains safe.”

The teen was charged with one count of misdemeanor trespassing. As of Wednesday night, his identity has not been disclosed.

South Florida family of 3 among 5 killed in Virginia plane crash https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/south-florida-family-of-3-among-5-killed-in-virginia-plane-crash/ Mon, 11 Mar 2024 16:54:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1421326 Five people, including a child, were killed in a plane crash that took off from South Florida.

A private jet left Fort Lauderdale and crashed in Hot Springs, Virginia, Sunday afternoon.

The plane went down in a wooded area near a small airport and burst into flames.

One of the victims has been identified as Alfredo Diez, a flight school owner in South Florida.

His wife and his child, along with two other crew members, were also on board and died.

According to officials, the pilot had reported an emergency on board.

Diez runs two flight schools in South Florida. His flight school at North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines was closed on Monday.

7News cameras captured a sign at the door of the flight school telling students that they will communicate with them in due time.

The family lived in a home in Cooper City.

Neighbors were stunned to learn of the tragedy.

“I’m in shock when that happened, ” said Angela Pereyra.

Pereyra had fond memories of the family.

“They have a little girl and they always like, nice family, you know?” said Pereyra.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the deadly.

“Essentially, everything is on the table, until we slowly and methodically remove each component off the table and rule it out as a factor,” said NTSB’s Adam Gearheart.

Victim speaks out following arrests of 7 burglary suspects accused of targeting Asian residents in Coral Springs https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/victim-speaks-out-following-arrests-of-7-burglary-suspects-accused-of-targeting-asian-residents-in-coral-springs/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 22:58:54 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1420735 One of the victims targeted by a group of burglars who were later arrested is speaking out after, he said, his Coral Springs home was broken into.

The victim, who spoke to 7News on Friday, said that his house was robbed because his wife is Asian.

“Her being the target, presumptively, she’s obviously a little bit more worried about that,” said the victim, who did not want to be identified.

The comments come days after Coral Springs Police arrested a group of bandits that, they said, targeted Asian homeowners because they thought they would have a lot of money in their homes.

Police believe the group committed at least 10 burglaries in Coral Springs over the last few weeks.

“This is a trend that we’ve seen in South Florida that has occurred more and more,” said Coral Springs Police Chief Bradley McKeone. “When they are at work, they are trying to go about their day to make a living, these individuals will break into their house or commit crimes against them.”

The seven burglars were arrested Wednesday after police began surveilling their movements in a joint operation between the Coral Springs Police Department, Broward Sheriff’s Office and Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators credited the relentless task force for making the arrest.

“They’re relentless. They work all hours of the day, seven days a week. They’re out there early in the morning, late at night, as you heard,” said McKeone, “and again, they’re gonna find you, and they’re going to catch you.”

Cellphone video captured by a neighbor of one of the victims shows the burglars stealing a safe from a home.

“They actually were unable to get into it, but they took the safe and stole the whole safe. It’s not a small object,” said the victim.

The victim said he wants his peace of mind back.

“Anytime there is an invasion of your personal space, it makes you feel a lot less safe. You know where you are, you have young kids, and they’re scared and worried,” he said.

Following their arrests, the suspects appeared in court and were charged with burglary and grand theft.

“Burglary, unoccupied dwelling unarmed. Count two is grand theft. Count three is criminal mischief over $1,000,” said the judge.

The seven suspects will remain behind bars until they get their immigration status sorted out.

Hollywood smoke shop owner opts not to prosecute teenage girls behind break-in https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/hollywood-smoke-shop-owner-opts-not-to-prosecute-teenage-girls-behind-break-in/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 21:58:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1420332 The owner of a smoke shop in Hollywood has chosen not to prosecute three teenage girls who, he said, targeted his business and stole thousands of dollars in merchandise, days before he was set to open to the public for the first time.

Hollywood Police confirmed a big break in Tuesday’s break-in at the shop, located along the 2300 block of Hollywood Boulevard. Investigators said they identified the three teens who were captured on crystal-clear surveillance video.

Shomo Poston hadn’t even had a chance to open up his smoke shop before one of the crooks literally smashed her way inside.

“We’ve been working on opening the shop. We’ve been working on it for the past two months,” he said.

The owner hoped to open in about a week, but he said he may have to delay the grand opening.

One of the girls is seen breaking a side window with what appears to be a steel rod.

The security footage shows one of the teens helping another climb through the window.

Once inside, she helped herself to merchandise, filling her bag with whatever she could grab.

Poston said he saw the girls outside the business through his security camera, but thought nothing of it since they were so young.

“I didn’t call the police. I just saw a few girls playing outside of my shop,” he said. “I didn’t think that they had any bad intentions.”

As it turns out, their intentions were to steal.

When the shop’s security alarm went off, the girl jiggled the front door and got out.

Hollywood Police officers arrived shortly after, but the trio were long gone.

“As an entrepreneur, it’s really hard. You know, you’ve put in a lot of time, effort and money into this, as we’re really hoping to have a successful business,” said Poston.

Detectives said it did not take them long to identify and locate the teens.

Hollywood smoke shop owners say 3 teenage girls targeted business, took off with at least $5K in merchandise https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/hollywood-smoke-shop-owners-say-3-teenage-girls-targeted-business-took-off-with-at-least-5k-in-merchandise/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 03:25:59 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1420016 The owners of a South Florida smoke shop are reeling after, they said, three teenage girls smashed their way into their business, days before they were set to hold their grand opening, and took off with thousands of dollars in merchandise.

The perpetrators, seen on surveillance video carrying backpacks, look like they should be in school, but the business owners said that on Tuesday night, they were focused on matters other than homework.

“OK, just go,” one of the girls is seen telling another.

One of the teens is seen using what appears to be a steel rod to break a window at the shop, located along the 2300 block of Hollywood Boulevard. Moments later, the teen is seen climbing into the business.

Once inside, the thief acts like she owns the place. She is seen helping herself tobacco products — making plenty of noise along the way.

But when the store’s deafening burglar alarm went off, the teen saw it as her cue to get going. She bolted for the door and jiggled the handle until she got out.

The surveillance video later showed two Hollywood Police officers entering the shop with their guns drawn, but the smoke shop bandits were long gone.

The owners of the shop gave an estimate of the stolen goods and overall damage as being anywhere between $5,000 and $10,000. They said they were planning to hold the grand opening this coming Wednesday, but at this point, they’re not sure whether or not it will happen on that date.

“As a young entrepreneur, it’s really hard to put in a lot of time, effort and money into this, and we really hoping that I have here a successful business,” said Shomo Poston, the owner.

The broken window was later boarded up with plywood.

As of Wednesday night, the subjects remain at large, as police continue their search.

If you have any information on this burglary or the subjects’ whereabouts, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

The crash happened early Tuesday morning.

According to police, the driver of the car hit a scooter rider from behind as they both were traveling west on Pembroke Road.

“We’ve got Hollywood Police investigating. Early this morning, a man was riding a scooter and apparently hit by a vehicle that has fled the scene,” said a 7SkyForce reporter.

Detectives said the driver never stopped and fled the scene following the crash.

“And you can see, there is a lot of destruction from whatever vehicle hit this scooter here,” said the 7SkyForce reporter.

The surveillance video is short and the subject’s car is hard to make out. Police believe the car is a white Honda Civic with tinted windows and a damaged front end.

Police hope someone knows something about this crash and comes forward to help in finding the driver.

Crews extinguish house fire in Hollywood; no injuries reported https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/crews-extinguish-house-fire-in-hollywood-no-injuries-reported/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 16:25:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1419321 A home that caught on fire in Hollywood was extinguished by rescue crews.

Hollywood Fire Rescue arrived at the home in the area of Raleigh Street, Tuesday morning.

7Skyforce hovered over the scene, where smoke billowed from the home.

Crews made entry into the home as they searched for any people inside.

Neighbors said two people were inside the home when it caught fire. Both of them were able to safely get out.

Officials confirmed that there were no injuries as a result of the fire.

A water source was established and the fire was knocked down.

7News cameras captured several firefighters as they assesses they situation.

Right next door to the home that went up in flames, 13-year-old Joshua De-Jesus is confined to his bed.

“He’s quadriplegic. He has cerebral palsy and he has seizures,” said Lissette Reeve, Joshua’s mother.

Reeve said her son requires 24-hour care so moving him from the home would’ve been tricky.

“That’s the first thing I thought about was my son and how to get him out of here,” said Reeve.

Reeve said firefighters quickly evaluated the situation and determined it was safe for him to stay.

“They wanted to make sure that he was going to be OK and that we didn’t have to move him,” said Reeves. “The smoke was high and I was afraid that perhaps it was going to go it might go to this house because we are very close..

She is thankful that the firefighters extinguished the fire before it spread to her home.

“The firefighters were excellent, really grateful to the City of Hollywood,” said Reeves.

The home is expected to be to a total loss

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Disaster Action Team from the local American Red Cross responded to the home fire on Tuesday afternoon. They said they helped coordinate emergency aid to an adult that was affected by the fire.

For now, the two residents of the burned home will have to find a new place to live.

Fort Lauderdale officials discuss plan to keep the peace as spring breakers arrive https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/fort-lauderdale-officials-discuss-plan-to-keep-the-peace-as-spring-breakers-arrive/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 17:37:49 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1418167 As Miami Beach officials begin to enforce measures to deter danger during spring break, officials in Fort Lauderdale also discussed their plans to keep the peace.

During March, several safety measures will be in effect.

7News cameras captured beachgoers on Fort Lauderdale Beach, Friday afternoon.

“Man, I love the weather, the beach, the people, being here with my girl,” said a man.

City officials said they’re ready for the influx of spring break crowds.

Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Bill Schultz said the safety measures on Fort Lauderdale Beach are not exclusive during spring break. In the past, officials have utilized these measures for festivals and large concerts.

“This is not any different than any other year,” he said. “We always heighten the number of officers that are going to be out here. It’s not only during spring break, it’s holiday weekends, it’s during our large festivals and events.”

Beachgoers are expected to see more officers in and out of uniform.

“You’re going to see a very heightened increase of officers,” said Schultz. “We never really release the exact amount of officers, but you’re going to see a substantial amount of officers that will be present throughout the weeks to come.”

What’s different this year is that Miami Beach is trying to cancel their spring break after years of unruly crowds.

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said they are ready if the steps Miami Beach officials are taking this year yields larger crowds north of the county line.

“It’s not a question of the number of people, but the attitude of people,” he said, “and as long as people come here with the right attitude, to enjoy themselves and allow other people to enjoy the beauty that we have here, it’s going to be a great season.”

Officials said beachgoers should also expect to see more rescue crews as well.

“Additional rescues on the beach, as well as lifeguards, and our Jet Skis will be deployed offshore as well,” said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan.

Police are encouraging people to use rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft to avoid the congestion of vehicles, and to utilize a buddy system when people are in the entertainment district to watch for their friend’s drinks to make sure everything remains safe.

“We always make sure that no one’s alone. If someone gets lost, we immediately go find them,” said a woman on the sand. “We always make sure that we’ve got each other’s locations.”

Officials said they also have the option to increase parking fees if they feel things are becoming too crowded on the beach.

Experts are also cautioning beachgoers who are heading to the beach this weekend to look out for rip currents.

‘He said this place belongs to him’: Deputies arrest man caught on video vandalizing Lauderdale Lakes church https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/deputies-arrest-man-caught-on-video-vandalizing-lauderdale-lakes-church/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 00:10:47 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1417571 Authorities have arrested a man who, they said, desecrated and damaged a church in Lauderdale Lakes.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies on Wednesday responded to the All Nations New Testament Church of God after, they said, a man stormed the property.

“I heard a noise on the outside, but when I came out, I saw this man with an iron in his hand demolishing the property,” said Hanies Brown, an associate pastor at the church.

Brown said she was inside the church with another member when they heard a loud noise coming from the outside.

“When we spoke to him, he said this place belongs to him, so immediately I went back inside and asked the secretary to please call the police,” said Brown.

Surveillance video from the church shows the suspect calmly destroying church property, breaking windows, lights and shed doors with what looks like a microphone stand.

“We were scared because he started demolishing the church itself. At first, when I saw him, he was on the outside, but then he began to attack the building that we were in,” said Brown. “I don’t know why this young man seem to come into the property to destroy God’s work.”

At one point in the surveillance video, the suspect attempted to open the door. When he wasn’t successful, he stormed the back sheds and threw the food the church distributes, like potatoes, on the ground.

Brown showed 7News the aftermath of the destruction.

“He pried this door open. This door was open. He knocked the lock,” said Brown. “We were so scared for our lives.”

As the man wreaked havoc on the outside of the church, the women were inside terrified as they waited for deputies to arrive.

“This [window], this one, and then he turned to this section when, maybe, he saw he couldn’t get to those, he turned to these [windows] down here,” said Brown as she showed the broken windows.

BSO deputies found the man on the property and arrested him.

Officials identified him as 41-year-old Jerry Ordely. He’s facing multiple charges including criminal mischief.

“I do find probable cause on count one, criminal mischief,” said the judge.

On Thursday, Ordely refused to appear in court.

“Jerry Ordely?” the judge said.

“Judge, I’ve been advised, he’s refused,” said the bailiff

A judge gave him a no bond hold and ordered that he could not have contact with any victims, could not return to the church and could not have any weapons.

“This building belongs to God, and we are here to worship,” said Brown.

Pastor Evan Grant described the aftermath of the incident after the man was taken away.

“This window here. About 10 windows, he hit out, pried the door. He climbed over the fence and broke it. When I came and saw it, my heart bleeds,” said Grant. “These were impact windows, and he hit them out. I have to search my heart to see if I can find forgiveness for a wicked act like this.”

Now church officials wonder how they’ll recover from this damage.

“If anybody out there can help us — donate windows, doors, lights, fixture — I need help,” said Grant. “This is really the act of the enemy. I don’t even know where the money is going to come from to put in those windows.”

Grant said Ordely’s time in jail helps him find God.

“Let’s hope that he repents and turns over his life to God,” said Grant.

The church has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the repairs. If you would like to help them out, click here.

4 dogs abandoned by owner at Pembroke Pines vet clinic find foster homes https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/4-dogs-abandoned-by-owner-at-pembroke-pines-vet-clinic-find-foster-homes/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 22:05:36 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1417464 Four dogs have found new homes after they were abandoned at a Pembroke Pines animal clinic.

Pembroke Pines Police said the four female dogs were left at the front door of Pasadena Lakes Animal Clinic on Wednesday morning with a note from the owner.

The note read “Doctor, I got evicted yesterday, have nowhere to go, please take care of them.”

“Fortunately, there was staff that arrived early in the morning and reported it to law enforcement, so we were able to make sure the animals got out of harm’s way and were properly treated,” said Pembroke Pines Police Department Sgt. Jason Palant.

According to Florida law, it is illegal to abandon animals in this way.

“Although sometimes financial impacts do affect everyone, there are ways we can properly reunite or rehome these animals,” said Palant.

Moments after the dogs, who are approximately 1 year old and weigh 40 pounds, were abandoned, the vet’s office found foster homes for three of the dogs almost immediately.

One of the dogs was briefly taken to the kennel at the police station but then found a foster home as well.

The fourth dog is at Pooches in Pembroke Pines as it looks for a new home.

Police said they have found the owner, who may face charges.

“These animals were left in two separate cages with minimal space, no food, no water,” said Palant.

This is not the first time dogs have been abandoned in the Broward County area.

Last year, a similar situation occurred in Margate when a woman tied her dog to the door of the United for Animals Adoption Center and drove away.

Fortunately, that abandoned dog found a new home quickly.

Police said that while they understand that people face economic hardship, abandoning pets at a veterinarian is not a solution.

“We want to encourage people that if you find yourself no longer able to care for your pets that you make sure you safely turn them over to make sure they can receive the care and treatment that they deserve,” said Palant.

There are multiple animal rescues throughout Broward County that can offer assistance if a person feels they can no longer take care of their pet, including the Broward County Humane Society and the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center.

Crucifix damaged at All Saints Mission in Oakland Park https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/crucifix-damaged-at-all-saints-mission-in-oakland-park/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 21:44:51 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1416968 A Fort Lauderdale church and soup kitchen has been hit with hate once again after two crucifixes were damaged.

“I just came out and I saw this one down here and then I saw him, this was under a bench over there, and then I saw the cross down and I was like ‘Wow,'” said Father Bob Caudill.

The All Saints Mission Church, located at 3460 Powerline Road, has dealt with several incidents of vandalism in the past.

Last year, one day before Thanksgiving, someone stole a figurine of Jesus Christ that was on a cross outside of the church.

Despite the unholy act against the church, it’s doors were opened on Thanksgiving day, providing food for less fortunate residents of the Oakland Park community.

In 2018, 7News reported another incident that took place at the church in Oakland Park, along Powerline road, when a homeless man knocked over the Virgin Mary.

“You know, there’s just a lot of upset people right now, I think, in the world. Just lots of stuff going on, you know, and that’s why we need to have more positivity of helping people to combat that,” said Caudill.

During that same year, the church faced an a tough legal battle with the city after it augured that the church’s feeding program violated an ordinance that was passed in 2014 banning parish houses.

But despite the attack on his church, doors will remain open to continue serving breakfast and lunch to over 200 people a day as part of Caudill and his volunteers’ soup kitchen that has been open for 30 years.

The good gesture began with a single meal.

“Then it was four, then I put up a table, a refrigerator, a stove, and told everyone to bring me food. That’s how it started,” said Caudill.

Father Bob said he took down the two damaged crucifixes and that he forgives whoever did this and will continue to focus on his work.

If you would like to help, Caudill said he needs volunteers and food to give away.

Broward County prepares for possible spring break influx, implements measures to curb chaos https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/broward-county-prepares-for-possible-spring-break-influx-implements-measures-to-curb-chaos/ Mon, 26 Feb 2024 11:49:48 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1416364 With spring break just weeks away, Broward County officials are taking measures to manage an influx of visitors. In the wake of Miami Beach’s crackdown, cities like Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood are preparing for potential challenges during the holiday season.

Over the last few weeks, Miami Beach has been public about keeping spring breakers at bay, which includes implementing some heavy restrictions like closing city parking lots, having check points on beaches, higher toll fees and even curfews.

“We’ve tried very, very, very hard to mitigate some of the issues with spring break,” said Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones.

These new measures have led to concerns that the usual chaos might shift to Broward County.

While Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood beaches are typically not as rowdy as South Beach during spring break, officials are not letting their guard down.

“I don’t believe that the spring breakers, who are looking to party it up at night and act unruly, would want to ever come here,” said City of Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy.

Levy said Hollywood always increases their police presence during spring break and they’ll do it again this year.

To discourage any bad behavior, Fort Lauderdale will reserve the right to increase parking fees up to $100 a day during spring break and the city has approved higher parking violation fines, with an increased fine of $125 for expired meters.

Broward County officials are on high alert, especially during last year’s Memorial Day shooting that happened on the Broadwalk in Hollywood, which injured nine people.

But even though the month of March is still a few days away, some vacationers are already in town.

“I think it’s fabulous and we are really enjoying walking on the Broadwalk,” said a tourist.

“We’re here till Thursday so we’re just going to relax. We need a break,” said another tourist.

Still, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis is also confident that the crowd can be controlled.

“We feel that the crowd will probably migrate more towards other party areas in Miami like Wynwood or so forth,” said Trantalis.

In anticipation of an influx during spring break 2024, Broward County is expected to step up its security. These include higher parking fees, enhanced law enforcement presence, license plate readers and closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras.

Additionally, Fort Lauderdale is reserving the right to close sidewalk cafes if things get hectic in the area and Hollywood Police officials said there will be a ban of alcohol, smoking, and single-use plastic, canopy and cooler rules, and prohibition of animals on the Broadwalk.

Although Miami Beach plans to “break-up” with spring break this year, places like Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood are welcoming all spring breakers, but they all have to behave.

BCPS provide free vaccinations at Manatee Bay Elementary following 6 confirmed cases of measles https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/bcps-provide-free-vaccinations-at-manatee-bay-elementary-following-6-confirmed-cases-of-measles/ Wed, 21 Feb 2024 17:22:23 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1414818 Broward County Public Schools are providing protection to children and their families after several students got sick with measles at Manatee Bay Elementary School.

Medical personnel provided free vaccinations to students at the school, Wednesday afternoon.

Parents and students spoke with 7News after classes let out.

“I think it’s a great step for those that hadn’t contemplated or hadn’t vaccinated their kids before,” said parent Oscar Perez-Aybar.

“Yeah, we’re kind of worried, but the kids are vaccinated, so everything should be fine,” said another parent.

“It’s kind of worrying, but since my brother and me have the vaccines, but like they say, hand sanitizer, no touching,” said student Emilia Agudelo.

According to the district, roughly 97% of the school is vaccinated against measles.

“I’m a pediatrician, so I think it’s very important we continue to vaccinate our children,” said a parent.

But less than three dozen students are not vaccinated.

“Currently, there are 33 of 1,067 Manatee Bay students that do not have an MMR vaccine for various reasons,” said Broward County Schools Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata.

The outbreak of measles at the school was first reported on Friday after one student contracted the disease. That number then increased to four students over Presidents’ Day weekend. On Tuesday afternoon, the district confirmed two additional cases, raising the total to six.

Licata walked the halls of the elementary school on Tuesday to thank teachers and staff.

“We know what goes on in schools is so important. We can never forget that you are the front line for educating our children,” he said.

Licata said that if a child is vaccinated, they are safe to go to school.

“It’s safe. It’s safe if your child is vaccinated,” Licata said.

“Thankfully, mine are, so we made the decision to bring them to school,” said Perez-Aybar.

But many parents have chosen to keep their children home this week, about 200 on Tuesday and nearly 175 on Wednesday.

“But I think the school has done a great job in trying to mitigate things, putting information out so we can make wise decisions,” said Perez-Aybar.

The Florida Department of Health released a letter on Tuesday detailing how easily measles spreads. They said that up to 90% of people who don’t have immunity and who are exposed will get it.

“The principal remains in close contact with the families, and we will continue to provide timely updates for the entire community,” said Licata.

Health officials said that if people are vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella, they’re about 98% percent protected from the highly contagious disease.

“The hallmark of measles is the rash, though, and that occurs a few days later,” said Dr. Ron Ford, chief medical officer at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “The rash is red, dotted rash that starts on the face, around the hairline, behind the ears, and then spreads to the trunk and then to the extremities. That’s one of the unique features of the measles rash, is where it starts and the way it spreads.”

Health officials urge anyone who is showing symptoms to call their healthcare provider first before showing up.

Students return to Manatee Bay Elementary following 6 confirmed cases of measles https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/students-return-to-manatee-bay-elementary-following-6-confirmed-cases-of-measles/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 16:11:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1414438 As students returned to classes on Tuesday, several parents are reacting to six cases of measles that were confirmed at Manatee Bay Elementary in Weston.

“He’s vaccinated, everything is OK,” said a parent. “So just following all the procedures.”

The outbreak of measles at the school was first reported on Friday after one student contracted the disease. That number then increased to four students over Presidents’ Day weekend. On Tuesday afternoon, the district confirmed an additional measles case.

Broward County Schools Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata walked the halls of the elementary school on Tuesday to thank teachers and staff.

“We know what goes on in schools is so important. We can never forget that you are the front line for educating our children,” Licata said.

Licata said that if a child is vaccinated, they are safe to go to school.

“It’s safe. It’s safe if your child is vaccinated,” Licata said.

The district said they are working closely with state health officials. They said any big decision, including temporarily closing down the school, will be made by the state.

“We are not allowed to keep children from coming to school but if the state feel it’s the best interest, they’ll deem that as a state of emergency for the school,” Licata said.

The superintendent’s visit comes as Broward County officials said another measles case in the county was detected on Tuesday. The update, provided by BCPS spokesperson John J. Sullivan, brought the total number of measles cases reported at Manatee Bay Elementary to six.

“This evening, Tuesday, February 20, Broward County Public Schools was notified of one additional confirmed measles case at Manatee Bay Elementary School. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to six. We expect to receive further guidance from the Florida Department of Health tomorrow and will continue to keep the school and its families updated with the latest information,” said Sullivan.

The Florida Department of Health released a letter on Tuesday detailing how easily measles spreads. They said that up to 90% of people who don’t have immunity and who are exposed will get it.

During the weekend, some parents were debating whether to send their child back to school.

“All weekend, we were back and forth to, ‘Are we going to take them,’ so we’re taking them, but I’m nervous because of the measles breakout,” said a parent.

School administrators spent the holiday weekend deep-cleaning every classroom at the school in hopes to stop the spread.

“They just disinfected everything, so it’s all clear, it’s all nice,” said a parent.

When asked if they’re afraid of the outbreak, one parent said that it was nothing to worry about, while others felt differently.

“Listen, he’s got to get to school, but at the end of the day, it’s nerve-racking,” a parent said.

On Tuesday, 200 students were absent from school.

The district said they will be offering free vaccination for students and their family at the elementary school on Wednesday. They said 92% of the students at the school are vaccinated for measles.

Health officials said that if people are vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella, they’re about 98% percent protected from the highly contagious disease.

“The hallmark of measles is the rash, though, and that occurs a few days later,” said Dr. Ron Ford, chief medical officer at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “The rash is red, dotted rash that starts on the face, around the hairline, behind the ears, and then spreads to the trunk and then to the extremities,” he said. “That’s one of the unique features of the measles rash, is where it starts and the way it spreads.”

According to experts, the transmission period is roughly four days before the rash is visible and four days after the rash appears.

The latest outbreak of measles is not exclusive to South Florida. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention said there are at least 20 measles cases in 11 other states.

The latest case in Broward comes as a House subcommittee on the COVID pandemic talked about lower rates of vaccinations last week.

Precautionary waterway advisory in effect in Fort Lauderdale following sewage spill at George English Lake https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/precautionary-waterway-advisory-in-effect-in-fort-lauderdale-following-sewage-spill-at-george-english-lake/ Fri, 16 Feb 2024 17:25:08 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1413461 A Fort Lauderdale park is caught up in a stench after a nasty sewage spill, prompting officials to issue a precautionary waterway advisory while crews work to clean it up.

Cellphone video recorded by a resident in the area on Friday captured the sewage in George English Lake.

“Dude, that’s disgusting. Look at that,” a man is heard saying in the video.

City officials said crews were working on fixing a pipe collapse north of George English Park, located at 1101 Bayview Drive. It’s a job that requires removing sewage from this area and disposing of it into a different sewage pipe.

Alan Dodd, director of Public Works for the city, said that didn’t happen.

“[The truck driver] opened up a stormwater manhole, and the sewage went into that instead, which ended up going into the water at George English Park,” he said.

Dodd said cleanup is underway.

“Well, we have a contractor who is coming, they’ll be using chemicals agents to clean up the materials, so they’ll be going on the shoreline and using other methods to clean it up, Vactor trucks, to get as much out of the waterways as possible,” he said.

But until then, Dodd said, this water isn’t safe.

“We don’t want anybody going into the water, touching it until the cleanup is done and done testing to make sure that there is no bacteria that’s still present.”

Officials have also outlined several other areas where residents are being urged to avoid water-related recreational activities like swimming, fishing, jet-skiing, paddle-boarding, kayaking and canoeing.

The following areas include the following:

  • North: North of NE 12th Street
  • South: South of Sunrise Boulevard
  • West:NE 20th Avenue
  • East: Bayview Drive

Due to the park’s closure, business owners, like Lauren Ridley, who operates Blue Moon Adventures, are losing a lot of money.

“I already refunded over $1,000 for today,” she said.

Ridley said her paddleboard and kayak rental business is closed until further notice.

“We’ve been having probably the worst winter for weather, and it’s our first good weekend. The beach is actually full of people, and now we can’t operate,” she said.

The precautionary advisory will be lifted once officials obtain satisfactory test results. For more information, click here.

Personal watercraft rider hospitalized after being found underwater in cardiac arrest off Fort Lauderdale https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/personal-watercraft-rider-hospitalized-after-being-found-underwater-in-cardiac-arrest-off-fort-lauderdale/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 21:09:26 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1413125 A woman who went missing in the water after she took off her life vest and either fell or jumped off a Yamaha watercraft was located and transported to the hospital, officials said.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue units responded to the scene, off 4060 Galt Ocean Drive in Fort Lauderdale, Thursday afternoon.

According to witnesses and detectives, the woman did not resurface after she jumped in the water.

Rescue units were dispatched to the scene, where they found the woman underwater in cardiac arrest.

“Respond to 4060 Galt Ocean Drive, open water. They saw a renter jump from the Jet Ski, and they cannot find her. It’s been 10 minutes, and she’s under the water. Everyone is trying to find her,” a dispatcher said.

Cellphone video recorded by a witness shows rescue boats circling an area on the beach.

“I got three Jet Skis that are out there working, and I got a guy with binoculars. The last point is around those three Jet Skiers,” another dispatch call said.

Witnesses said the woman wasn’t too far from shore, only 50 to 60 feet out into the ocean.

“I don’t know if she was dizzy, she got drowsy, a wave took her. Those guys ran,” said Vincent Thompson. “One guy ran and about five minutes later, he kept going up and down to the beach, and he screamed, ‘Call the Coast Guard.’ Two of them got on the Jet Skis, and they could not find her.”

Thompson said he noticed something strange moments before the incident occurred.

“She had a heavy backpack. That’s what it looked like; that’s what they said, too. It was a backpack, and it was really, really heavy,” said Thompson.

“I got binoculars, and I was looking out there, and we saw something orange floating there, but you don’t know,” said Steve Mann.

But that turned out not to be the missing woman.

“They lost her. They lost eyes on her. There is a Jet Ski out there right now searching,” a first responder said in radio transmissions.

But several minutes later, beachgoers were relieved to learn rescue crews had found the missing woman.

“Target in the water, doing the surface rescue,” a first responder said in radio transmissions.

“One of the signals, they had her, brought her out, and we could see them doing CPR on her on the boat,” said Mann.

“Everybody’s here with their families, their kids, enjoying themselves on vacation. It’s a terrible, terrible scene to see. Nobody wants to see something like that,” said Thompson.

Paramedics transported the patient to Holy Cross Health Fort Lauderdale. As of late Thursday night, officials have not provided an update about her condition.

7Skyforce hovered over the hospital when the woman arrived in the ambulance.

Investigators have not identified the woman, and they have not specified how long she was underwater.

Plantation High School teacher, 25, accused of engaging in sexual conduct with 15-year-old https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/plantation-high-school-teacher-25-accused-of-engaging-in-sexual-conduct-with-15-year-old/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 17:16:08 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1412633 A Plantation High School math teacher went from the classroom to the courtroom after he was arrested for allegedly soliciting an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

Gabriel Abraham Mohammed was taken into custody in Tamarac on Monday. According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, he had a warrant out from Plantation Police.

The 25-year-old appeared before a judge, Wednesday morning.

“He’s a teacher. He’s hired in a position of trust over these student. He violated that position of trust,” said a prosecutor.

Mohammed faces a charge of soliciting or engaging in sexual conduct with a minor by an authority figure.

“Your Honor, Mr. Mohammed doesn’t have any history, which is to be expected. He’s a teacher, but that’s what makes this aggravating,” said a prosecutor.

Plantation Police said the crime started earlier this year. Detectives said they found voicemails on the teenager’s phone from Mohammed.

In one of the voice messages, investigators said, Mohammed told the girl, “You were put in my life. I appreciate everything you mean to me. Have a good night baby girl I love you.”

In another voicemail, police said, Mohammed told the girl, “I don’t give [expletive] about how that sounds, if I’m 25 and you’re 15. We know how we felt about each other. That [expletive] was real.”

Rumors began to fly on campus, students said.

“Oh, I heard that he was doing stuff with a girl inside his class,'” said a student.

Word of possible misconduct made its way to the administration.

Broward County Public Schools confirmed that the suspect worked at Plantation High School, located at 6901 NW 16th St. An investigation was launched after the school’s principal found out about some inappropriate conversations the teacher had.

Mohammed was then removed from his position.

BCPS released the following statement, which reads as follows:

The safety and well-being of students are always the highest priority. Upon learning of the allegations, the school’s leadership immediately notified the proper authorities to investigate. The teacher involved was also reassigned away from students and the school pending the outcome of the case. The school continues to work closely with law enforcement regarding this situation. Due to the ongoing law enforcement investigation, we are not able to provide additional details. We defer to BSO and Plantation Police Department.

BCPS

Prosecutors said that the victim’s family was concerned by these revelations.

“They’re very concerned about their daughters well being, they’re very concerned that their teacher, when they send their child to school everyday, they don’t expect any of her teachers are trying to solicit her in a romantic or sexual relationship,” said a prosecutor. “And that trust was violated by Mr. Mohammed. And he made comments, I believe he made statements, ‘Oh, it was just a joke.’ That’s not really believable either.”

During his court appearance, a judge set Mohammed’s bond at $30,000. Once he pays his bond, he is not allowed to return to any school in the tri-county area, cannot have any contact with minors and is not allowed to have any devices that could be used to access the internet.

He has since paid his bond, but as of late Wednesday night, he was still in jail.

55-year-old man reported missing identified as subject killed in deputy-involved shooting in Weston; investigation underway https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/55-year-old-man-reported-missing-identified-as-subject-killed-in-deputy-involved-shooting-in-weston-investigation-underway/ Mon, 12 Feb 2024 15:40:30 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1411883 An investigation is underway after, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said, one person was fatally shot by a deputy in Weston. The man who was killed was reported missing by his family on Saturday.

BSO deputies arrived at the scene at 1449 Capri Lane, Monday morning.

According to deputies, they responded to a suspicious call. There was then an altercation with someone inside a vehicle and shots were fired.

When fire rescue crews arrived at the scene, at around 9 a.m., one person was pronounced dead on the scene.

“Shortly after 9 a.m., the Broward Sheriff’s Office received some information that there was a suspicious individual in a vehicle parked in the 1400 block of Capri Lane in an apartment complex in Weston,” said BSO Spokesperson Veda Coleman-Wright. “Deputies responded, they made contact with this individual. He got out of his car, he was armed with a weapon, they gave him verbal commands to drop the weapon. Unfortunately, he did not, causing one of our deputies to fire his weapon.”

The deceased was identified as 55-year-old Mario Bonilla.

On Monday, someone saw Bonilla’s car at an apartment complex and contacted BSO with the information. Deputies said that Bonilla’s family also saw the social media post.

“She said her husband’s vehicle is on Twitter at an address and she wants the address checked,” a dispatcher is heard saying.

Coleman-Wright said no other injuries were reported. She also confirmed that Bonilla charged at deputies.

“He did charge at the deputies, so I’ll give you that information,” she said.

Bonilla’s mother-in-law, Wanda Cordero, was also at the scene and said that he may have been struggling with mental health issues, which could have led up to the deputy-involved shooting.

“I really don’t know what happened,” Cordero said. “He’s been missing and I don’t know if it was a mental issue, but he had no signs at all, at all. He was the happiest man in the world.”

Cordero said that Bonilla did not live at the apartment complex where his vehicle was.

“For some reason, we don’t know why, we don’t know why,” she said. “He didn’t say he was upset at all. He said, ‘I’m sorry. I love you, I love you, I love Casper,’ that’s a dog, ‘I love my family. Everybody.'”

According to Cordero, he left a suicide note behind when he went missing.

Monday’s commotion woke up neighbors.

“The thing that woke me up was the yelling, then I heard a gunshot,” said a neighbor.

The deputy who shot Bonilla was placed on administrative assignment.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation, which is standard whenever there is a police officer or deputy involved in a shooting.

Woman dead after being allegedly stabbed by husband who barricaded self inside Pembroke Pines home https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/woman-dead-after-being-allegedly-stabbed-by-husband-who-barricaded-self-at-home-in-pembroke-pines/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 12:34:23 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1410324 Police are investigating a stabbing in a Pembroke Pines neighborhood that, they said, left a woman dead and led her husband to barricade himself inside their Pembroke Pines home.

Pembroke Pines Police officers surrounded the residence, located along the the 1400 block of Lacosta Drive, Thursday morning.

SWAT teams also arrived at the scene at around 7:45 a.m. to aid in the situation.

A live shot of the area showed many police cruisers parked on the grass surrounding the property, as officers blocked off the community.

Hours later, when SWAT teams made entry into the garage, they found the man injured and transported him to the hospital.

Officials posted on X regarding this incident.

https://twitter.com/ppinespd/status/1755670856942883313?s=46&t=NJAMcCre9kVljosLDT5I5Q

7News cameras captured first responders placing the husband into an ambulance. The woman was also transported to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

According to investigators, the couples’ five children, whose ages range from 3 to 16, were also home at the time of the stabbing but were not physically injured.

“Our police department and the men and women who work for our agency are doing everything possible to offer resources and services for these children because of the situation that they are about to face,” said Pembroke Pines Police Capt. Adam Feiner.

Residents in the neighborhood were shocked when they heard what happened.

“I can’t believe it. I mean, it’s not something I could’ve seen happening. It’s still a shock for me,” said Peter Robinson, a family friend. “I can’t picture the reason for that. I can’t picture what would spark something like that, because they were such a loving family.”

Robinson, who is the godfather of one of the five children, said he’s known the family since the 1980s. He said he is the owner of the home that the family was living in.

“My wife already said, ‘If we, let’s say, for some reason, the parents can’t take care of them, and there is nobody else, we will take care of the kids,'” said Robinson.

The huge perimeter that was set up in the neighborhood was slowly disbanded.

Crime scene technicians were seen collecting evidence on the ground.

The husband has not been charged and remains at the hospital. His condition is unknown.

Police said no arrest has been made, and they are not looking for a suspect.

Student arrested after at least 1 knife found in purse at Miami Carol City High School, sources say https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/student-arrested-after-being-found-with-knife-at-miami-carol-city-high-school-sources-say/ Wed, 07 Feb 2024 18:22:47 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1409900 A female student was arrested after at least one knife was found at Miami Carol City High School in Miami Gardens, sources said.

According to Miami-Dade County Public Schools, school officials received an anonymous tip by other students about the presence of weapons on the campus, located at 3301 Miami Gardens Drive, and notified Miami-Dade Schools Police.

Following a comprehensive investigation, police successfully identified and confiscated the weapons, leading to the student’s arrest.

7News sources said the weapon or weapons in question were a knife or knives that were found in the purse of the student who was arrested. Sources said the girl had been involved in a previous fight.

Authorities said that all students and staff are safe.

A spokesperson for M-DCPS issued a statement that reads in part.

“This serves as a reminder about the importance of reporting suspicious activity. Together, we can continue to ensure our schools remain the safest place for children.”

Jaquelyn Calzadilla Diaz, Miami-Dade County Public Schools

Students reacted to the news of a student being arrested.

“Is it scary to think someone might have knives on them in school?” asked a reporter.

“Oh, yeah, most definitely. I mean, ’cause I haven’t experienced that in my life, so if I would’ve seen that, yeah, it would’ve been scary for me,” said a student.

Some students said they felt out of the loop with what was going on.

“Everyone keeps making up stories. I couldn’t really see, but I did see the police officer going up the stairs and figuring it out,” said a student.

One student said the subject was quietly approached.

“They didn’t announce nothing, but they sent a message because they didn’t want to alert her more,” said a student who did not want to be identified.

“They were just saying we went on lockdown. Everyone was confused, kinda, from what I heard, like, they were asking if we were in a lockdown, ’cause we didn’t know what happened,” said another student.

Man dead following police-involved shooting in Lauderhill https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/man-dead-following-police-involved-shooting-in-lauderhill/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 12:34:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1407591 A man who, police said, fled from officers and attempted to take an officer’s gun, has died after being rushed to the hospital following a chaotic chain of events that ended in a police-involved shooting in Lauderhill.

The incident happened near Northwest 31st Avenue and Northwest 16th Street, where Plantation Police and Lauderhill Police officers were still on the scene around 7 a.m., Friday.

According to Plantation Police, at 4:54 a.m., they responded to a call of a domestic disturbance at a gas station at 10261 W. Broward Blvd.

Investigators said a 31-year-old woman was attempting to get away from her 32-year-old boyfriend.

Surveillance footage showed the woman inside the gas station and locking the door.

“Hello?” the store clerk is heard saying.

“Hi, can you hide me?” asks the woman.

Seconds later, her boyfriend begins banging on the door, and the store’s clerk shows him that he was on the phone with police.

“Please don’t open the door,” the woman said.

The store clerk led the woman into a back room as they waited for police to arrive. At one point, the store clerk even tries to block the front door of the gas station.

Moments after, the boyfriend is seen attempting to ram the gas station’s doors with his vehicle. Once he broke the door, he squeezed his way in, but immediately after, he turns around and runs off as he hears police sirens approaching.

When police arrived at the scene, the suspect fled in his vehicle, and a pursuit ensued.

During the pursuit, detectives said, the suspect rammed into a police cruiser, and his vehicle was damaged when he struck a median on the 1600 block of NW 31st Ave. in Lauderhill.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot, and police followed briefly.

Police said that when they attempted to subdue the suspect, he tried to forcibly take an officer’s gun, and he was shot.

A neighbor in the area told 7News that he heard gunshots.

“A quarter to 5, I just heard like six gunshots, and the best thing I did was like drop down,” said the neighbor, who asked not to be identified or show his face on camera. “It was so close to how I heard it, and then, when I finally got up, I heard the screams. That’s when I seen the lights. I decided, ‘OK, the police here. Let me go check what’s going on.'”

Other residents heard the commotion.

“Not used to this where I live, especially a shooting,” said one resident.

“It just sounded like a war zone,” said a woman.

“He said, ‘Mommy, mommy,,” said a woman. “Across the street, they were laying down face down, and officers was going back and forth.”

Video footage of the scene showed a gray vehicle with its driver door and driver’s side back door left open.

Evidence markers were also placed at the scene.

7News cameras captured agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives at the scene with K-9 units. Agents took a jacket that was on a fence as evidence.

Paramedics with Lauderhill Fire Rescue transported the man to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition.

The girlfriend and the store clerk who helped her remained safe with police.

Neighbors said they were shaken up by the incident.

“I was woken up of me sleep; it was pretty traumatic,” said a woman. “My children were walking everywhere. They were walking about their sleep, too.”

“I knew they were some action going on and something that I wanted to stay away from,” said neighbor Lina Hankerson.

The suspect was facing charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, depriving an officer of their weapon and resisting arrest.

Their identity has not been disclosed.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident, which is standard whenever there is a police officer involved in a shooting.

Cutler Bay, Hallandale Beach homes go up in flames; no injuries reported https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/cutler-bay-hallandale-beach-homes-go-up-in-flames-no-injuries-reported/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 13:09:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1406725 There was double trouble in two South Florida neighborhoods when house fires forced two families to run out of their homes.

A destructive blaze in Hallandale Beach consumed a home, leaving it in ruins and affecting power lines in the overnight hours.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue units responded to the scene on the 600 block of Northwest Third Street, just after 11 p.m., Tuesday.

Ring camera video from a neighboring home showed thick, black smoke billowing into the air from the engulfed house.

Another area resident captured the house fully engulfed in flames on their cellphone.

The fire intensified, leading to part of the roof collapsing during the firefight.

Fire officials declared the house a total loss.

Although nearby structures were not affected by the fire, residents in neighboring homes said they were forced to escape.

Barbara Lovett described the chaotic moments.

“We were in bed, and we heard a loud boom, and the police [yelled], ‘Get out, get out!'” she said.

Lovett said she crawled out of a window, injuring her arm in the process.

“I jumped out of there. I had to, I had no choice. I was running for my life,” she said. “I was scared, you know? That time of night, unexpected

Lovett showed 7News the exact spot where she escaped.

“I’m still living,” Lovett said. “Feel good. Still living.”

Firefighters said three people and two homes lived in the home, but neighbors told 7News it was abandoned.

“Empty for some time, since I’ve been living here, five years,” said a woman.

The incident also resulted in downed power lines, disrupting electricity to the affected area. Neighbors said power was restored to the area around 3 a.m. Wednesday.

It took fire crews about 40 minutes to completely put out the house fire.

No injuries or damage to other nearby homes were reported.

7News cameras captured police officers at the charred property, Wednesday afternoon. A propane tank was seen below a window.

Firefighters have also returned to the home a few times throughout the day to check on hotspots.

About 30 miles south, a house in Cutler Bay also caught fire on Wednesday, leaving a family without a home.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the property in the area of Belmont Drive and Southwest 198th Street, just after 3:30 a.m.

7Skyforce captured the aftermath of the flames as it left a giant hole on the roof of the house.

No injuries were reported, but the family cat did pass away as a result of the fire.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire.

The cause of both fires are currently under investigation.

Broward County superintendent focused on increasing security following recent concerns at two schools https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/broward-county-superintendent-focused-on-increasing-security-following-recent-concerns-at-two-schools/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 17:41:19 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1406417 Broward County Superintendent Peter Licata said the safety of its students remains one of his top priorities, following two school incidents in the past week.

“I just want to make sure parents are aware that our schools are safe, our schools are very very safe,” said Licata.

Licata’s comments come after deputies discovered two guns, loaded magazines, and illicit drugs in the parking lot of Deerfield Beach High School on Monday.

Two students were detained and were identified as 17-year-old Turell Persuad Ali and 17-year-old Kameryn Miclaughlin.

The two are facing several charges, which include possession of weapon on school property, and possession of illicit drugs. Ali is facing an additional charge of trespassing because he is not a student at the school.

Ali and Miclaughlin both appeared in court on Tuesday and were ordered to remain in jail for 21 days until prosecutors decide whether to prosecute them as adults.

According to students, it all began with a bloody fight.

“Two females were fighting like way earlier. They got in a fight way earlier. Girl broke her nose and they had to call an ambulance to come get her,” said one student. “She called her people. Her people came around here, I guess that is her brother or whoever they are but they came around here they talking about ‘Oh yeah they finna shoot up the school.’”

While there was no immediate threat to students, the school went into lockdown as a precautionary measure.

“They had us on lockdown since 3:06 p.m. They were saying there were people out there with stuff in their bags, they were checking everybody’s cars,” said another student.

“I’m sitting there, calling my mama, I’m telling her ‘Man, I’m scared. Mommy, I’m scared.’ They had me locked in there,” said one student.

According to the arrest report, a Broward County Public Schools security specialist noticed a person sleeping inside a running car on the school’s parking lot on Monday. The discovery of the sleeping person led to a administrative search of the car where officials located a gun inside a backpack.

“A further investigation and search of the vehicle by Broward Sheriff Office deputies revealed two loaded handguns, several loaded magazines, a drum magazine and illegal narcotics including MDMA, mushrooms and cannabis.”

The Deerfield incident is the latest school scare for Broward County.

On Friday, an 18-year-old was arrested for bringing a loaded handgun to Stranahan High School, causing chaos on campus and leaving parents worried.

“Kids can’t get an education these days. You gotta worry about them getting killed in school,” said one concerned parent.

“I’m kinda nervous because I can’t get my child,” said one parent.

Before a scheduled school board meeting on Tuesday, Licata told 7News that these incidents are life-changing events.

“We as educators have to show and make sure our kids understand this is a life-changing event when you bring a weapon to school. It impacts the rest of your life, especially if you are 17 or 18 because now you are being charged as an adult.”

Following the Deerfield Beach incident, the school district called parents on Monday night to assure them they were implementing additional safety measures.

“We’re implementing additional safety measures. This includes an increase in random screenings using handheld metal detectors across district schools,” said an automated message from the Broward County Superintendent.

The superintendent said the district was “expediting the purchase of metal detectors”. The district confirmed that the purchased metal detectors will be walk-through metal detectors. They hope to install them across all Broward high schools, upon school board approval.

“This is not something to play around with, it’s not show-and-tell. Even these fake airguns, that look so much like real weapons, don’t bring them,” said Licata.

As for parents, the superintendent said creating safe schools requires their help.

“What’s in their backpack? You have a responsibility to make sure your child goes to school with the right things in their backpack,” said Licata.

Licata said they are working closely with the Miami-Dade County Public School Board to ensure the safety of all students in South Florida.

“We have to address this comprehensively,” said M-DCPS Superintendent Dr. Jose Dotres. “Metal detectors on their own, I believe, they’re not the only solution.

Metal detectors could end up in high schools around Broward County as early as August.

“I’m not even on duty”: Newly-released 911 call from the man accused of impersonating a Pembroke Pines police officer https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/im-not-even-on-duty-newly-released-911-call-from-the-man-accused-of-impersonating-a-pembroke-pines-police-officer/ Mon, 29 Jan 2024 23:26:01 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1406144 The 911 call from the Miramar man who, police said, was pretending to be a Pembroke Pines police officer shows 29-year-old Davonte Thompson calling police after he had pulled a person over.

“What’s your name,’ the dispatcher said.

“Davonte,” said Thompson.

“It’s non-emergency. I actually had a car, um, serving out of lanes and like almost caused an accident,” said Thompson.

Deputies said Thompson pulled a driver at a TD Bank in Pembroke Pines and then called 911 himself.

“I was able to make him stop with my old badge,” said Thompson.

“OK,” said the dispatcher.

“I used to be in law enforcement,” said Thompson.

Investigators said the badge Thompson is referring to, is a stolen badge from Louisiana.

“He was driving very reckless. Right now, he’s here at the bank,” said Thompson. “We don’t need people on the road like this. I’m not even on duty.”

When police arrived at the parking lot of the bank, they arrested Thompson, charging him with impersonating a police officer.

The next day, when Thompson bonded out of jail, he did not deny that he pulled someone over, just like he had told police when he was arrested.

“I was just trying to get somebody off the street,” said Thompson.

Part of Thompson’s release from jail is on the condition that he undergoes a mental evaluation within 10 days.
