According to Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett, the incident happened Friday evening as the victims were walking north on Harding Avenue, between 90th and 91st streets.

“A car drove by with four individuals, and that car threw a cup of water and a soda can at them while they were yelling ‘free Palestine,'” Burkett said.

Police said the water cup struck one person in the right shoulder, and a second individual was splashed with water.

Burkett said the Surfside Police Department already has a lead on the vehicle that was involved.

“And I think they’ve tracked down the car, actually, so we’re making progress there,” he said. “We take it seriously, very seriously.”

When the suspects are caught, Burkett said, they will likely be charged with battery.

“You don’t throw things at people and not be held accountable for that,” he said. “That’s uncool, it’s not who we are. We want our residents to all feel safe.”

Burkett said witnesses and license plate readers helped officials track down the vehicle. He hopes his police department will make an arrest soon.

Sheriff believes body in burned SUV to be Homestead woman who went missing after carjacking in Seminole County https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/sheriff-believes-body-in-burned-suv-to-be-homestead-woman-who-went-missing-after-carjacking-in-seminole-county/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 14:15:03 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1433015 WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. (AP/WSVN) — Authorities in central Florida said they believe they’ve found the body of a South Florida woman who was taken in a carjacking, and they believe this attack was not random.

Katherine Altagracia Guerrero De Aguasvias, 31, of Homestead, was attacked and kidnapped at gunpoint Thursday afternoon at an intersection northeast of Orlando, Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma said during a news conference on Friday.

“What we are now investigating is a homicide,” said Lemma.

Video showed the moment the victim was hijacked in the Winter Springs area of Seminole County. A man with am automatic 10 mm gun appears to approach the woman’s white Dodge SUV, opens the driver’s door, unlocks the doors and gets into the vehicle with her.

Courtesy Seminole County Sheriff’s Office

A witness called police about the scary sight.

“There’s a guy going down East Lake Drive in Seminole County, he was chasing a car, hit the car, got out of his car wit a hood over his face, and he had a machine gun, it looked like,” said the caller.

Lemma said investigators found what they believe was her burning SUV with her body inside less than two hours later in a rural area of Osceola County, just south of Orlando.

This comes after people nearby heard gunshots and saw smoke.

“Something exploded,” said a woman in cellphone video showing the smoke.

“By the time authorities with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office arrived there, there was so much damage to the vehicle, you could not positively identify the vehicle,” said Lemma. “But they also discovered that one person was deceased and found in that vehicle.”

Near the vehicle, authorities said, they found 12 shell casings of 10 mm rounds.

Investigators will use dental records and DNA to confirm the body’s identity.

Authorities said they are searching to confirm many other details as well, like why was Guerrero De Aguasvias in Seminole County?

“We were told she was here visiting family. We were not able to confirm that she has any family member here,” said Lemma.

Guerrero De Aguasvias was at an intersection just outside of Winter Springs when a green Acura began to ram her SUV prior to the carjacking, Lemma said.

“At that time, she picks up the phone and called her husband, told her husband that she was being rammed, that there was somebody there that was following her,” said Lemma.

Guerrero De Aguasvias’ husband told her not to stop, authorities said.

“To not call 911 is something that, again, I don’t know the answer to that,” said Lemma.

Neither called the authorities, Lemma said. Another motorist called 911 and took a cell phone video of the carjacking. The video shows a passenger from the Acura pointing a gun at Guerrero De Aguasvias and then jumping in the back seat of her SUV before they drive off, followed by the Acura.

Lemma said investigators believe Guerrero De Aguasvias was targeted by the occupants of the Acura, but they don’t have a motive for the carjacking.

“She called her husband; husband said, ‘Don’t leave the car,’ no reports to law enforcement, that this was not a random act of violence, that the perpetrators knew who they were going after,” said Lemma. “Why they were going after them is something that is part of our ongoing, continuing investigation.”

Guerrero De Aguasvias has had no criminal history since moving to the U.S. five years ago, Lemma said.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the green older model Acura sedan to call 911.

Meanwhile, Guerrero’s family members have been gathering at a home in Homestead.

Neighbors said they devastated. One of them spoke to 7News through a translator.

“She was a good person. I went to give the family my condolences, and they are heartbroken, and so am I,” he said.

Family members said investigators have advised them not to speak with the media.

Deputies believe this was a targeted attack, as they continue to investigate.

O.J. Simpson’s controversies followed him to South Florida after being acquitted of murder in ‘trial of the century’ https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/o-j-simpsons-controversies-followed-him-to-south-florida-after-being-acquitted-of-murder-in-trial-of-the-century/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 20:27:05 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1432791 O.J. Simpson was known for making national news, which also included South Florida.

In October of 1995, Orenthal James Simpson was found not guilty of murdering his wife and her friend, in a murder trial watched globally. He left the Los Angeles County Courthouse as a free man but he was not free from trouble.

Simpson would then move to sunny South Florida where he lived with his kids during the period of time between his California acquittal and his Las Vegas conviction.

But even in South Florida, TV cameras and trouble seemed to follow.

While calling Kendall his home in a house on Southwest 112th Street, his residence was raided related to drug a investigation.

There were also controversial calls to 911 and he was also arrested in Miami-Dade County.

“I’m not going to let Mr. Simpson answer any questions about the facts of this case,” said his lawyer.

His private life routinely spilled out before the public during ugly exchanges with his then girlfriend, Christie Prody.

In October of 1999, Simpson called 911 and claimed Prody was high and out of control, accusing her of drug abuse.

“She up for two days on pain pills and red bull,” he said.

In May of the following year, police were called to a hotel near Miami International Airport.

“I guess someone evidently felt that they saw her get physical with me, but she didn’t,” Simpson said.

Later that year, Simpson was was back in the news when Prody sold a story to the tabloids, which claimed that he had given her a cocaine fueled confession to the infamous murders.

She also said Simpson was stalking her and that she was living in fear.

He followed up with the media and claimed she made it all up for money.

“For the last two weeks, she’s apologized for having done this story,” Simpson said.

Despite the relationship drama, he was never charged for anything to do with Prody.

“Never in my life have I chased the guy in a car,” said Simpson.

The drama between the two didn’t end there.

In January of 2001, police were called to Prody’s Kendall apartment after a neighbor called 911 about the pair fighting.

A month after that incident, Simpson surrendered at the Miami-Dade County Jail in relation to a road rage incident that happened in December of 2000.

“Reached inside, grabbed the driver’s glasses and tore him off his face,” said an official.

Simpson would stand trial in that case after being charged with burglary and battery.

“Sorry if I cut you off. Stop (expletive) following me!” said Simpson.

The outcome in that trial was the same as his first.

“As for count one of the charge, the defendant is not guilty,” said the judge. “As for count two of the charge, the defendant is not guilty.”

Years after leaving South Florida, his home was renovated.

7News cameras captured the renovation.

When the realtor was asked if it was a brand new floor plan, he replied “Yes.”

His Kendall home was up for sale in 2017 for $1.3M

An old neighbor of Simpson described the ex-football star as the perfect neighbor.

“Never had a problem with O.J.. He was very nice,” said Carlos Perez.

Simpson lived in the Kendall home until his conviction of armed robbery in Las Vegas in 2008. The home was later demolished.

Man left paralyzed following police shooting to be arraigned; attorneys demand all charges be dropped https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/man-left-paralyzed-following-police-shooting-to-be-arraigned-attorneys-demand-all-charges-be-dropped/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 10:47:52 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1431850 The attorneys of Donald Armstrong, a man who was left paralyzed after a police confrontation during a mental health episode, held a news conference after his arraignment in Miami.

The 47-year-old Miami man now faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest without violence. His attorneys, Ben Crump and Larry Handfield, and family members spoke at a news conference following Armstrong’s arraignment to demand all charges to be dropped.

“First of all, it goes without saying what happened in that video is unconscionable,” said Crump. “She only wanted to get him help. She did not expect for him to get six bullets in his torso.”

The civil rights attorneys have been hired to represent Armstrong after an encounter with Miami Police on March 7 at Northwest 58th Street and Seventh Court, where he was tased twice and shot six times. The incident has since led to outrage and calls for justice.

“I just called the police to get him so help. I need y’all just to pray for him please,” said Denise Armstrong, Donald’s mother. “Do that for me, please, Lord.”

Donald, who was experiencing a mental health episode at the time of the police response, was filmed by bystanders during the confrontation. Video evidence showed Donald at the entrance of the home, allegedly holding a screwdriver. In that same video, Donald lifts his shirt to prove he was unarmed before being tased twice and shot six times by officers.

“That’s excessive. That’s the very definition of excessive. A man on the ground and you continue to empty the clip and then you charge him with aggravated assault,” said Crump.

“I think the video shows that the sole basis of filing allegations of aggravated assault was to cover up for the reckless conduct exhibited by one officer,” said Handfield.

He is now experiencing some paralysis and is being held in the jail’s medical ward.

While Denise couldn’t get through many other words, her attorneys did. Donald’s legal team said that the video clearly shows excessive force being used as several shots were fired even after he had already fallen to the ground.

“It is shocking, it’s deplorable, it’s horrific,” Crump said. “It is what you would teach officers if you wanted to show them what not to do.”

“This was a 911 call for a mental health issue crisis, but instead, he received six bullets that could’ve taken his life,” Handfield said.

One day after the shooting, the family’s pastor, the Rev. Dr. Gaston E. Smith, spoke out about the incident.

“I do know that he was dealing with some emotional, perhaps mental concerns, that his mother was concerned about,” he said in an interview with 7News on March 8. “She reached out for help. She did not reach out for her son to be shot multiple times.”

Crump continued to question the officer’s respond during the incident.

“If it was really a dangerous situation, where all those officers felt their lives were in danger, then they should have had everybody shoot,” he said. “But the other officers didn’t shoot because they knew that it wasn’t a dangerous situation to warrant that use of deadly force.”

Miami Police Chief Manny Morales released a statement following the shooting, saying in part, “I pledge to ensure that our department does better in addressing calls involving mental and behavioral issues.”

Now, the Armstrong family wants the charges of aggregated assault to be dropped and for Donald to recover from his injuries at home. His attorneys are also not ruling out a potential lawsuit.

“How many videos like this do we have to see? We’re going to look at exploring every possible legal redress to this injustice,” Crump said. “What happened on that video was excessive and if we don’t hold police officers accountable, it might be your child next, that’s what this is about.”

Miami Police said that the case is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Internal Affairs.

Armstrong is being held without bond in a jail hospital. A hearing has been set for Thursday to address a request for a bond to be set in this case.

Pastor fatally stabbed at NW Miami-Dade church remembered as kind leader; suspect charged with murder https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/pastor-fatally-stabbed-at-nw-miami-dade-church-remembered-as-kind-leader-suspect-charged-with-murder/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 22:50:41 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1431759 A devastated South Florida community of faith is mourning their pastor after he was stabbed to death, as the man accused in the crime faces a murder charge.

Police said Pastor Antwane Lenoir from Westview Baptist Church in Northwest Miami-Dade was murdered on church property, Saturday afternoon. He was 41 years old.

“He was a very nice man, and he would give you the shirt off his back,” said Yovonka Bryant, the victim’s cousin. “He was so generous and so kind to a lot of people.”

Investigators identified the suspect as 44-year-old James Dawkins.

“It’s crazy that you can be the helping to someone, and they end up turning on you,” said Bryant.

Byrant said her cousin had been helping Dawkins, allowing him to live inside the house of worship, located in the area of Northwest 24th Avenue and 133rd Street.

But for some reason, Bryant said, Lenoir decided to end that arrangement, and he went to the church with a locksmith to change the locks.

“And the guy got wind that he wouldn’t have anywhere else to go, so he actually showed up to the church, and I think things got to be heated between he and my cousin, and [Dawkins] ended up stabbing him,” said Bryant.

Police said Lenoir suffered multiple stab wounds to the neck and died in the church parking lot. Dawkins, who played the keyboard at Westview Baptist, was arrested on Sunday.

Monday morning, the suspect appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer.

“He stabbed the victim in the neck,” said Glazer. “So, unprovoked, he just stabbed the victim multiple times and killed him.”

Lenoir was a husband, father of four and beloved member of this community.

Darryl Tomas said the pastor was like a brother to him.

“It’s just going to be a major major loss for this community,” he said. “Well loved, well liked, always out doing the best that he can possibly do for his family, for his community.”

While family and friends grieve a tremendous loss, the man accused of killing Lenoir remains locked up without bond.

“I hope that he someday has peace in his heart, and he comes to the realization of what he took away from us,” said Bryant.

Dawkins faces one count of first-degree murder.

James Peter Tidot was charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm and culpable negligence charges, Friday morning.

The incident happened on Wednesday in a family member’s home in North Miami Beach.

According to the arrest report, Tidot “did leave a loaded firearm unsecured and unholstered within reach of his son.”

The report states that North Miami Beach officials found the child “in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to his head and a firearm on the floor next to his body.”

He was taken to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for treatment. Family members said he is expected to be OK.

Family members did not want to go on camera but told 7News that Tidot is a police officer in South Carolina with the Columbia Police Department.

The Columbia Police Department in South Carolina released the following statement:

A Columbia Police Department (CPD) officer has been placed on investigatory suspension after being arrested by the North Miami Beach Police Department this week.

CPD was notified by the arresting agency of charges stemming from allegations of negligence after an incident involving his 4-year-old son and an improperly secured and loaded duty weapon assigned to Peter Tidot.

Per protocol, Tidot who has been with CPD since April 2023 will remain on investigatory suspension until the disposition of criminal charges in Florida and administrative investigation by CPD’s Internal Affairs Unit under the Office of Professional Standards.

Columbia Police Chief W.H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook says, “We are praying for the speedy recovery of the child and everyone impacted by the incredibly unfortunate incident. Let this serve as a reminder about the importance of gun safety and proper gun storage.”

CPD will continue to work with the North Miami Beach Police Department regarding the case

CPD

CPD Chief W.H. Holbrook also released the following statement:

“We are praying for the speedy recovery of the child and everyone impacted by the incredibly unfortunate incident. Let this serve as a reminder about the importance of gun safety and proper gun storage.”

Tidot appeared in bond court on Thursday.

“Good afternoon sir,” said Judge Mindy S. Glazer. “I’m allowing you to have supervised contact with your child. I hope your child is OK and you cannot possess a gun.”

Tidot has since been released on bond and spent the day at the hospital.

Parents furious after 13 students left behind by school bus after field trip to Youth Fair https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/parents-furious-after-13-students-left-behind-by-school-bus-after-field-trip-to-youth-fair/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 16:28:51 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1430530 Several parents are furious after, they said, their children were forgotten at the Youth Fair while on a field trip. In total, 13 students were left behind.

“I was so scared,” Jahkeam Moore said. “My teacher was gone,” he said.

Six-year-old Jahkeam was safe and sound Thursday morning, one day after he was forgotten on that field trip.

His kindergarten class from Charles R. Drew K-8 Center in Northwest Miami-Dade on Wednesday made their way to the fair on the bus for some food and fun.

Jahkeam’s godmother, however, told 7News that 13 students were also left at the fair when the school bus initially took off.

“The school bus did turn around and pick up eight of them,” she said. ” A parent did leave with two, and then my godson and two others in the vehicle with this one parent.”

A bus returned to pick up eight kids, but five other students found their own way back to the school.

“There’s many red flags with this, and it’s totally unacceptable,” said the godmother.

The parent who drove Jahkeam back to campus told 7News that she was not an approved chaperone for the trip, and she simply went to the fair on her own account to watch her son, who was also on the field trip.

She said, at some point, the teacher left Jahkeam with her.

Latasha Jones, Jahkeam’s mother, said she wants answers on how the bus left her child behind.

“I want to know how did my child get left at the fair,” said Jones. “When I signed that field trip form, he was supposed to stay with his teacher, not go off with a parent that’s not even a chaperone on a field trip. I’m still angry.”

Jahkeam’s godmother told 7News that Jahkeam was up at 4 a.m. thinking about the incident. She also said that there were red flags regarding the situation, and several unanswered questions remain.

“He just embraced me, he told me and said how scared and afraid he was because, even though he knows the parent’s son, he did not know the parent at all. That was his first time,” said Jahkeam’s godmother.

She now wants those responsible for leaving her godson and those 12 other students to he held accountable.

“Just from one parent to another, I just think the proper protocol was not done when it comes to doing head counts, when it comes to ensuring that every child is on the bus,” she said. “They basically just told the bus driver, you know, gave the clear, the OK, and they left.”

The school district released a statement following the incident.

“Miami-Dade County Public Schools is deeply concerned to learn that several students from Charles R. Drew K-8 Center returned to their school from a field trip with a parent instead of their assigned bus. We are looking into the matter and will take appropriate action.”

MDCPS

For now, Jahkeam’s family is happy that he is OK, but his mother wants to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“This is very frustrating because what if my son never made it back to me. Then, what answers would they have for me?” said Jones.

As of Thursday afternoon, no action has been taken by the school district related to the field trip.

South Miami assisted living facility shuts down after owner arrested on elderly abuse charge https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/south-miami-assisted-living-facility-shuts-down-after-owner-arrested-on-elderly-abuse-charge/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 21:24:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1428205 A South Miami living facility has surrendered its license just one day after the owner was arrested for alleged elder abuse of one of its residents.

7News cameras on Thursday captured three agents of the state regulations department entering 77-year-old Josephine Gurri’s home and exiting as they continued their investigation of the incident.

According to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, The Good Family Home Inc. assisted living facility surrendered their license to the agency on Thursday.

All residents living at the facility have been removed, and the families are working with the agency to relocate them.

7News cameras captured family members moving their loved ones out of the home, Thursday afternoon.

South Miami Police confirmed families have removed their loved ones from the home following news of the incident.

Gurri was arrested on Tuesday after, police said, the victim’s granddaughter told them her 84-year-old grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s, was “abused and physically beaten by the suspect.

The granddaughter told police that a video, recorded by a previous caretaker earlier this month and sent to her, shows Gurri “striking (the victim) in the buttocks and lower back area.”

“What I saw, what I witnessed was rough,” said the granddaughter.

In the cellphone video, obtained by 7News, the screams of the 84-year-old are heard while she is in the restroom with Gurri. Then the sound of a slap is heard.

“She grabs her like a – and she smacks her purposely, like hard,” said the granddaughter.

The granddaughter shared photos of the bruises on her grandmother’s face and legs.

Gurri appeared in bond court on Wednesday.

“All right, ma’am, you need to get yourself a lawyer if you can afford one,” said Miami-Dade Dade Circuit Judge Leon M. Firtel.

In addition to running the living facility for 20 years, Gurri was also listed as a staff member with the job title of nursery caregiver at Riviera Presbyterian Church. She has since been removed from the church’s website.

South Miami Police are now focused on finding out whether Gurri’s behavior caught on camera was a common occurrence at the facility.

“It’s stomach-turning to see that video,” said South Miami Police Sgt. Fernando Bosch. “Our concern is that there are other victims that haven’t come forward yet.”

Bosch said the actions on the video have no place in society, especially at an assisted living facility.

“This shouldn’t be happening at an assisted living facility where you expect your family members to be taken care of. This shouldn’t be happening,” said Bosch.

The grandmother victim has been moved in with family members.

Gurri bonded out overnight after a bond court judge set her bond at $1,000. She was also ordered to stay away from the victim.

7News cameras captured Gurri opening the door to investigators and exiting her home. 7News reporters knocked on her door to see if she would like to make an on-camera statement, but Gurri wasn’t interested in talking.

Caretaker, 77, arrested for allegedly hitting 84-year-old woman at assisted living facility in South Miami https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/caretaker-77-arrested-for-allegedly-hitting-84-year-old-woman-at-assisted-living-facility-in-south-miami/ Wed, 27 Mar 2024 21:15:03 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427782 A caretaker has been arrested after, police said, she abused and hit an elderly woman under her care at a South Florida senior living facility.

Miami-Dade Police responded on Tuesday to the Good Family Home, located along the 6800 block of Southwest 79th Terrace in South Miami.

According to police, the victim’s granddaughter told them her 84-year-old grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s, was “abused and physically beaten by her caretaker,” who has been identified as 77-year-old Josephine Gurri.

“I saw her mishandling my grandmother. I saw her hitting my grandmother, I saw her verbally abusing my grandmother,” said the granddaughter. “And my grandmother was just standing there in despair, saying ‘What’s going on here, what’s going on here.’ My grandmother has severe Alzheimer’s, she’s helpless.”

The granddaughter shared photos of the bruises on her grandmother’s face and legs.

Police entered the facility and arrested Gurri. She faces an elderly abuse charge.

Gurri appeared in bond court on Wednesday.

“Ms. Gurri’s present,” said a court official.

“I don’t see any criminal history,” said a court official.

“All right, ma’am, you need to get yourself a lawyer if you can afford one,” said MIami-Dade Dade Circuit Judge Leon M. Firtel.

She was ordered to stay away from the victim.

Gurri remains behind bars at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Her bond was set at $1,000.

Norka Rodriguez, a caretaker who works at the facility and is a friend of Gurri spoke highly of her to 7News and said she didn’t believe Gurri was capable of hurting anyone.

“She’s a very caring woman, very calm person, I don’t understand what happened here to tell you the truth,” said Rodriguez.

The granddaughter of the 84-year-old victim said she doesn’t understand either.

“It’s, it’s there,” said the granddaughter. “The proof is in the pudding. It’s there and I really thought that she was in good hands, I really truly did. It’s crazy to even think that somebody can treat another human being like that.”

The grandmother victim has been moved in with family members.

On Thursday afternoon, the media was outside Gurri’s home which prompted someone inside to call the police.

Three agents of the regulations department went into Gurri’s home to do their investigation of the incident.

New surveillance video captures 2 alleged arsonists attacking Hialeah barbershop; 1 still at large https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/new-surveillance-video-captures-2-alleged-arsonists-attacking-hialeah-barbershop-1-still-at-large/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 20:44:27 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427365 Newly released surveillance video captured two alleged arsonists going to a Hialeah barbershop as they attempted to burn the business down. Hialeah Police arrested one of the suspects but the second one is still on the run.

On Friday, at 3:40 a.m., Hialeah Firefighters were called to the barbershop at 60 W. 49th St.

Once they arrived at the scene, they found the inside of the shop engulfed in flames.

As firefighters worked to keep the blaze from spreading to neighboring businesses, witnesses told police that the fire was not an accident.

Surveillance video confirmed it was a case of arson.

In the video, one of the suspects was seen smashing the front window with a wrench. The second suspect then came up behind him with two molotov cocktails and threw them inside the building. Video shows one of them didn’t even bother to cover up his face.

A camera from a neighboring building captured the dirty work from a distance.

The shop was gutted and the owner was left heartbroken.

The owner said when he saw the video, he told police that he knew the men as he used to work with one of them and gave investigators their names.

Speaking in Spanish, Ariel, the owner of the barbershop, said the attack on his shop was unexpected.

“All I want to say is this is something I didn’t expect. I ask God for strength to get through this problem,” he said.

Police arrested 38-year-old Miguel Reyes Jr., who appeared in bond court over the weekend.

“Burglary of a dwelling count 1, arson first degree count 2, bomb destructive device count 3,” said the judge.

As Reyes Jr. sits in jail, his partner, 56-year-old Alberto Gonzalez, remains a wanted man accused of torching a Hialeah barber shop.

The motive remains unclear.

If you have any information on Gonzalez’s whereabouts, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

The 1001 Nachts Ride at the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair suffered a mechanical failure on Sunday.

Video posted to social media captured a rod coming loose while the ride was in motion and filled with passengers. The large metal pole was seen bouncing back and forth as the ride came to a halt.

The operator caught the malfunction and shut down the ride before anyone got hurt.

7Skyforce captured the ride out of commission on Monday afternoon as it flew over the fairgrounds.

Tony Diaz, the general manager for North American Midway Entertainment, said that while the ride malfunction may have looked scary, the riders were never in danger.

“Our team did exactly what they were trained to do,” said Diaz. “This device is designed where there’s redundancies and safety. When that drive line loosened, it could go nowhere. No customers were in harm.”

Repairs will be done and inspectors will check out the machine before any passengers can ride it again.

“This device will be repaired. It will be inspected by our team and it will be inspected by the State of Florida’s Department of Agriculture before it’s put back in service,” said Diaz.

The Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition released the following statement:

Today, on March 24th, 2024, during operation of the 1001 Nachts Amusement ride, the ride experienced a mechanical issue. In response, the ride operator promptly initiated the emergency stop procedure, bringing the ride to a halt in accordance with established safety protocols. We can report that all guests were promptly evacuated and there were no injuries sustained. Following this incident, the ride will undergo repairs and will be subjected to thorough
inspection by the State of Florida ride inspectors before resuming operations.

Fairgoers reacted to the news on Monday.

“That’s scary. As a parent, I would’ve been concerned,” said one woman.

“What do you think it would’ve been like to have been on that ride?” asked 7News’ reporter Jessica Holly.

“Psst. Terrifying,” said one man.

“I think it was very scary,” said another woman.

Diaz said the rides are thoroughly vetted by the State of Florida, by a private company hired by the entertainment group, and by the operators on a daily basis.

Police investigating after barbershop in Hialeah set ablaze https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/police-investigating-after-barbershop-in-hialeah-set-ablaze/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 16:25:08 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425984 Authorities are investigating after a barbershop in Hialeah went up in flames, and police are looking into whether two men are responsible.

The blaze at 60 W 49th St. reportedly started at 3:40 a.m. on Friday.

Hialeah Fire Rescue officials said nearby businesses were also impacted by smoke emanating from the blaze.

According to police, they were told by eyewitnesses that two men were seen igniting the fire. Authorities have not yet confirmed that information.

However, surveillance video obtained by 7News from a smoke shop across the street appears to show two individuals setting the barbershop on fire and then fleeing.

Speaking in Spanish, Ariel, the owner of the barbershop, said the attack on his shop was unexpected.

“All I want to say is this is something I didn’t expect. I ask God for strength to get through this problem,” he said.

7News cameras captured the owner and others sifting through the charred remains of the business on Friday morning.

Those who work in the area said they’ve seen the surveillance video from cameras at the barbershop, and it shows the faces of the two men responsible.

Investigators advised the owner against releasing the video. However, the video from next door confirms the blaze was not an accident.

Still, the owner said he doesn’t suspect anyone in particular.

“We can’t suspect anyone at this time because, really, I don’t have a way to know the reality,” said Ariel. “This is being investigated and will be resolved by investigators.”

Fortunately, no one was inside the building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

The subjects are still on the loose. As of Friday afternoon, no arrest has been made.

Hialeah Police Department, Hialeah Fire Prevention Bureau and the State Fire Marshal’s Office continue to investigate.

If you have any information on this arson crime, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

FBI offers $10K reward for arrest of South Florida murder suspect https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/fbi-offers-10k-reward-for-arrest-of-south-florida-murder-suspect/ Wed, 20 Mar 2024 17:12:19 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425114 The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of a South Florida murder suspect.

Joshua Ismael Campos, 22, is accused of fatally shooting a man at an apartment complex on Southwest 270 Street in Miami on July 25, 2021.

Allegedly armed with a firearm, Campos fired at least 18 rounds at Demetrius Harris while Harris’ girlfriend and 5-year-old son were nearby. Police said it was the result of a fight over a parking spot.

Campos was charged with second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and firearm possession by a convicted felon or delinquent on July 26, 2021, by the 11th Judicial Circuit in Miami-Dade County and a state warrant for his arrest was issued.

On Feb. 23, 2024, a federal arrest warrant was issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, charging Campos with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

“He should be considered armed and dangerous and an escape risk,” said FBI’s Mark McCormick.

Authorities said that he should be considered armed and dangerous, and an escape risk.

It’s believed that Campos may be accompanied by Maxine McCord, who is not wanted by law enforcement.

“Additional information has been obtained that he has left the State of Florida,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Oscar Adino.

At the Wednesday news conference, the victim’s family was present.

“You killed my grandson for nothing. You understand what I’m saying? He wasn’t a bad kid, he wasn’t, what did you do? Why? Why?” said the victim’s grandmother.

Maxine McCord

The family has a message for the accused killer.

“You need to turn yourself in. It’s been a long time, it’s going on for three years, and I need justice for my son,” said Demetrius Harris Sr, the victim’s father.

They are also asking the public for help in finding the subject that took the young kid’s life.

“I really need justice in this case, thank you,” said Harris Sr.

“And I pray every night before I go to bed that justice is served,” said the grandmother.

Campos reportedly has known ties to Miami, Fort Pierce, and Tampa in Florida. Investigators said the latest information they have points to Georgia, Alabama, and Texas.

Campos is described as standing at 6 feet, weighing 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Individuals with any information regarding this case are urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit tips online at tips.fbi.gov.

2 adults arrested after allegedly fighting child at Poinciana Park Elementary School in Miami https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/2-adults-arrested-after-allegedly-fighting-child-at-poinciana-park-elementary-school-in-miami/ Tue, 19 Mar 2024 16:25:53 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1424690 Two adults were arrested on Tuesday, accused of fighting a child at a South Florida school.

Germikia Denise Freeman, 32, and Charles Nathaniel Webb Jr., 37, were charged with child abuse with no great bodily harm, trespassing on school grounds after being given a warning and education institution interference.

Freeman and Webb both appeared before a judge.

“Ma’am, if you’re going there to pick up your children, you better just go there and pick up your child and not have any problems, OK?” said Judge Mindy Glazer. “If you see someone fighting with your children, you need to go to the office and report it to the administration. Remember, don’t pick up any new law violations because if you do, you’ll be locked up in jail until your trial. If you see someone jumping your kids, make a complaint in the office, call the school resource officer. But don’t get involved yourself as much as it may hurt you.”

According to the arrest report, the incident happened on Friday at Poinciana Park Elementary School, located at 6745 NW 23rd Ave., when a witness told an officer that Freeman was fighting a student in the school’s parking lot.

The report stated that Freeman was picking up her sons in the school’s parking lot when she saw one of her sons fighting a classmate there. She then ran to where her son was fighting the classmate, grabbed the student and, “violently thrust him back and forth causing the victim to fall to the ground.”

Webb was also at the scene and police stated that he grabbed a student, “by his shirt and pinned him to the hood of a vehicle,” that was in the parking lot. He proceeded to, “turn to another kid and punched him in the nose area.”

Freeman, the report said, was given several verbal requests to leave the school but she did not comply and was yelling loudly in front of the parking lot, which disrupted the daily school dismissal.

The school’s administration and security left their posts to investigate the incident.

Freeman, her sons and Webb then walked to their vehicle and left the scene.

When the two returned to the school on Monday, both of them were taken into police custody and were transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Webb told Glazer that his kids are being bullied. At least one parent, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she has seen the couple’s kids get jumped repeatedly by other students.

“This is happening so many times,” said the parent. “They’re scared to walk home because how bad these kids bully them.”

Glazer told the parents instead of them, the school should had been more involved to stop the fight.

“Unfortunately it was a school fight and the school should have been more involved to stop the fight,” said Glazer.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools released the following statement:

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is aware of an incident involving students and other individuals at Poinciana Park Elementary after school hours last week. The students involved were disciplined according to the Code of Student Conduct and the other individuals have been arrested. M-DCPS works diligently to promote core values such as respect and integrity among students. We urge parents to do their part by acting responsibly and serving as good role models for their children. Students are also reminded that negative behaviors may result in life-altering consequences.

M-DCPS

Freeman and Webb will be released from jail while they wait for their next day in court. Both parents were ordered to stay away from the students involved.

According to the parents, they have reported the bullying several times to the school but it has continued. They plan on relocating their sons to another school.

‘She could have got killed’: Mother outraged after 14-year-old daughter beaten at Thomas Jefferson Middle School https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/she-could-have-got-killed-mother-outraged-after-14-year-old-daughter-beaten-at-thomas-jefferson-middle-school/ Fri, 15 Mar 2024 21:35:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1422834 A South Florida middle school student was attacked in a vicious bathroom brawl, and now the mother of the 14-year-old girl who was filmed being beaten is speaking out.

Felicia Jones, the mother of the girl seen in the video being repeatedly pummeled by another girl, spoke with 7News on Friday. She said she’s concerned for her daughter’s safety.

“She could have got hurt, she could have got killed in that bathroom,” she said.

Jones said her daughter was being bullied and was lured into a girls bathroom at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Northwest Miami-Dade, where was forced to fight.

“As a mother, it hurt me inside to watch this video, to see my daughter fighting in the bathroom, somebody planning to ambush her and sending her to the bathroom to fight her,” she said. “That’s wrong, and it’s not right.”

The incident happened on Thursday at the school, located at 525 NW 147th St.

“They’re not watching these kids,” said Jones.

Jones said her daughter, who is an honor roll student, was told that the girls needed to talk. But when the teen got into the bathroom, she saw something else was being planned.

In the video, Jones’ daughter was seen waving her hands, as if to say “no,” and tried to avoid a fight by saying, “We can talk, let’s not fight.”

The other girl in the video responds with, “Yeah, come on.”

The three girls in the bathroom were ready with their cellphones to capture video of the whole thing.

They start throwing punches, and the 14-year-old was thrown into the wall, then repeatedly punched in the head.

According to Jones, those girls have been hateful to her daughter for years, and they have since posted the video on social media.

The concerned mother said the school needs to do more in order to protect students.

“That’s not safe. Y’all say this is a good school. Y’all say you have a good security. That’s not good security, that’s not safe,” she said. “Come on, you’ve got three girls against one. One recording, she in there fighting, like cats and dogs. These young ladies are supposed to be getting an education, not fighting.”

Jones went to the school on Friday to meet with the administration. She said they were not aware that the fight happened.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools later released the following statement:

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is aware of a video clip involving students from Thomas Jefferson Biscyane Gardens K-8 Academy engaging in a physical altercation on campus yesterday. We are also aware of an altercation caught on video involving these same students at a park last night that occurred off-campus and after school hours. The school’s administration has reviewed the matter and the students involved will be disciplined according to the Code of Student Conduct. At M-DCPS, the well-being and safety of our students is of the utmost importance. This school district goes to great lengths to promote the values of restraint and respect as well as using social media responsibly. We ask that parents reinforce these principles at home.

M-DCPS

Jones said she will back at the school next week for another meeting.

39-year-old Hollywood middle school teacher charged with molestation of a minor https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/39-year-old-hollywood-middle-school-teacher-charged-with-molestation-of-a-minor/ Thu, 14 Mar 2024 16:06:49 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1422387 A Hollywood middle school teacher was arrested on Wednesday, accused of inappropriate behavior with a student.

Felicia Sharonda Smith, 39, was charged with molestation of a child between the ages of 12 and 16 and lewd and lascivious conduct.

During her court appearance on Thursday afternoon, a judge set her bond at $150,000.

“I realize the charges are serious,” said the judge.

Smith paid the bond and is expected to be released soon.

If Smith pays her bond, she must be fitted with a GPS ankle monitor. She was also ordered to not have any contact with the victim or any minors and cannot step foot on any school’s campus in the tri-county area.

According to Hollywood Police, officers were made aware of inappropriate contact between a teacher and a student at Driftwood Middle School, located at 2751 N. 70th Terrace.

During their investigation, detectives questioned Smith, and she was arrested. She admitted to police that at the beginning of the year, she and a student developed a maternal relationship. Smith also admitted that she kissed the student on school grounds.

“The teacher did admit to having a maternal relationship with the student since the beginning of the year and then did admit that there was kissing involved after that,” said Hollywood Police spokesperson Deanna Bettineschi.

The victim, police said, told officers that she was forced to inappropriately touch Smith.

The victim’s family began asking questions after the young victim came home with marks on their body.

“They realized that something just wasn’t right and continued pushing for answers,” said Bettineschi.

Police said the child claimed the marks on the their body were from injuries with a football at school.

“But through further investigation, they were able to identify that it was from kissing and it did look like a hickey on the student,” said Bettineschi.

The teen later admitted that she had been skipping her sixth period class since February and spent that time in Smith’s classroom and her classroom closet during Smith’s planning period.

Smith was a Language Arts teacher at the school.

According to the arrest report, the teen saw Smith “as someone who was loyal and faithful and thought of her as a mother figure.”

The victim told detectives that Smith told her to “not tell anyone because she could lose her job if people found out.”

On her Facebook page, she posted pictures that were taken inside the school and wrote that some of the pictures were taken by her students.

A parent told 7News many students at the school are upset because they liked Smith and trusted her.

“Seeing my daughter in tears over something that she doesn’t fully understand,” said a concerned parent. “She is emotionally not OK and I’m not OK cause she’s not OK.”

The parent, who chose to remain anonymous, said her daughter is devastated as Smith was one of her favorite teachers.

“I don’t think she’s ever been hurt like this before,” said the concerned parent. “She’s more upset that her teacher is gone. She doesn’t really understand the depth behind it.

The Broward County Schools Board released the following statement:

The safety of our students is always our top priority. Broward County Public Schools is fully cooperating with the Hollywood Police Department in its investigation. The teacher has been reassigned away from the school and students pending the outcome of the case.

BCPS

Hollywood Police are working closely with BCPS as they continue to investigate.

According to the school district, Smith worked as a substitute teacher from mid-2019 to 2022. In July 2022, she became a permanent teacher at Driftwood Middle.

Sunny Isles Beach traffic stop leads to woman’s arrest for counterfeit diplomatic tag https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/sunny-isles-beach-traffic-stop-leads-to-womans-arrest-for-counterfeit-diplomatic-tag/ Wed, 13 Mar 2024 10:33:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1421888 A routine stop by Sunny Isles Beach Police officers led to the arrest of a woman for driving with a counterfeit license plate, leading to social media attention after a video of the interaction was posted online.

The incident, captured in cellphone video sent to 7News, has prompted the police department to clarify the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

Cecilia Mercado, 32, was pulled over by police officers for ignoring a “Right Turn Only” sign in a high-traffic area known for frequent accidents. The video showed the officer forcibly pulling her out of the car, Tuesday, after she didn’t cooperate.

“Please bring your supervisor now!” the man who was in the car with Mercado said in the video. “I feel threatened.”

Despite initially being stopped for traffic violations, the situation escalated when Mercado claimed to have “sovereign citizenship” and refused to comply with the officers’ request for her identification and insurance documents.

A video circulating online shows a portion of the interaction, missing the critical moment when Mercado rolled up her car window as officers were asking for her ID and insurance, police said. This led to the police legally taking her from the vehicle and placing her in handcuffs.

“She is not a United States citizen. They have no jurisdiction over you,” continued the visibly irate man. “You are going to get fired from your job and she’s going to get $250,000 for winning in court. If you want to play, I will see you in court.”

Footage of the arrest exhibited Mercado falling to the ground as officers continued to pull her out of the car. She appeared visibly shocked.

“Cessy, I’m sorry,” said the man.

The man behind the camera is Mercado’s boyfriend. He also claims to be a non-citizen national with “diplomatic immunity.”

“All you had to do was comply,” said one officer.

“I did, I gave you my…” said Mercado.

“No, you did not. No, you did not,” said the officer.

Mercado said she gave them her passport, but an officer stated that was not a driver’s license.

Officials said she was originally cited for a traffic violation and was then released, but further investigations revealed that she had a counterfeit diplomatic tag. This led police to put out a “be on the lookout” alert for Mercado, leading to her subsequent re-arrest.

“The City of Sunny Isles Beach Police Department remains committed to making our streets safe for drivers and pedestrians,” stated the department in a release.

7News was the only station there as Mercado was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade. She faces felony charges related to the counterfeit license plate, with a bond set at $2,500.

Scott Huss, the man who recorded Mercado’s arrest, spoke to 7News outside of the jail.

“He unlocked the car, opened the car door, and grabbed Cessy by the arm,” he said. “Her immunity is 100% authentic. The specifics can’t be disclosed on public interview, however, the court case and the federal lawsuit will be public. They have no jurisdiction over you. She is not a United States citizen.”

Huss continued to comment on Mercado’s arrest saying, “Nothing should get to the point where somebody is dragging somebody out of a vehicle for a wrong left turn.”

The 32-year-old woman, born in New York, has since posted bond, and was released from jail on Wednesday, where 7News cameras captured Mercado walking out of jail.

“They are not fake. They are completely registered to my private trust and my vehicle, which by law, you are allowed to have a vehicle underneath the trust,” said Mercado.

According to the arrest report, the U.S. Department of State told police that Mercado’s car had a fake diplomatic license plate. When asked about her claims to diplomatic immunity, Mercado doubled down.

“I’m a non-resident alien, and there was nothing wrong with my plates. They have unlawfully detained me,” said Mercado.

Fresh off her bond out, the couple took another ride as they left TGK in a Mercedes Maybach with an unusual looking tag.

But before they could get home from jail on Wednesday afternoon, Mercado had another encounter with police, minutes after she appeared on an Instagram Live where she spoke to her fans from the backseat of the Mercedes Maybach.

“This is why you have to become a non-citizen national, so you don’t have to worry about paying taxes, and you get your business right,” said Mercado on social media.

The Maybach also had a diplomat-labeled license plate. Police stopped the car along the 300 block of Sunny Isles Boulevard.

Video posted by Only In Dade shows the driver of the Maybach being arrested for allegedly driving with a fake license plate.

Another video shows the second encounter with police from inside the Maybach , which was posted on social video Wednesday. It shows police, with their guns drawn, telling the driver of the Maybach to step out of the car. Police told 7News the driver didn’t have a driver’s license either.

The driver has been identified as 22-year-old Andres Lopez. He was taken to the Miami-Dade Police Department as authorities sorted out his identity.

Another video shows Mercado and her boyfriend stranded, with no ride, and speaking to police near where they were stopped a day earlier.

Mercado and her boyfriend said their diplomat license plates are legitimate, and they have lawyers who are prepared to take action against the police department.

“I look forward to sharing my story in court and not being treated like a savage ever again,” said Mercado.

‘Justice for Joshua’: Community activists gather in Surfside to protest 18-year-old’s arrest, vice mayor’s actions https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/justice-for-joshua-community-activists-gather-in-surfside-to-protest-18-year-olds-arrest-vice-mayors-actions/ Tue, 12 Mar 2024 22:30:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1421793 Community activists gathered in Surfside to call for an independent investigation into a teen’s arrest and the vice mayor’s actions.

Holding ‘Justice for Joshua’ signs, activists gathered Tuesday evening in front of Surfside Town Hall to make their voices heard ahead of an evening commissioner’s meeting.

The protest comes days after an alleged push landed 18-year-old Joshua Epstein in jail as officials charged him with a felony charge of assaulting an elected official.

Epstein was arrested after footage, given to 7News, shows Surfside Vice Mayor Jeff Rose yelling at Epstein, claiming the teen pushed him.

What led up to the exchange captured on video wasn’t recorded on video and isn’t clear.

Epstein’s mother, Eliana Salzhauer, is herself a former Surfside commissioner and critic of town leaders. She was at the protest gathering on Tuesday.

“I want my son’s name cleared and I want a full investigation because the corruption that allowed this to happen in town hall must be eliminated or no resident is safe,” said Salzhauer.

The charge stems from a Surfside squabble that allegedly took place after a candidate forum held at Surfside Town Hall.

“Keep pushing me, Josh, keep pushing me. Back up,” Vice Mayor Jeff Rose is heard saying in the video. “You already pushed me once, and you can do it again and see what happens. You already pushed me once, and it’s on camera.”

Epstein and his mother have both been critical of the Surfside government and claim the push allegation and the subsequent arrest are purely political.

On Tuesday night, commissioners held their first commissioner’s meeting since the incident occurred.

As the meeting began, one of the commissioners, Marianne Meishcheid, tried to add a resolution to the agenda, calling for a vote that would censure the vice mayor for alleged abuse of power.

“His actions have fractured the community,” said Meischeid.

But when the vote began on her resolution, it didn’t go far.

“No,” said one member in a voting call.

“No,” said another member in a voting call.

Meishcheid’s resolution failed as she didn’t have the votes.

But the public didn’t need a vote. During the public comment period, which lasted two hours, various community residents appeared at the podium with questions and concerns about the alleged push.

“You have no respect for us residents,” said one man.

“And quite frankly, I’m really tired of this,” said another man.

Residents told commissioners they saw what unfolded and there was never a push. Others said that even if the pushing did occur, the way it was handled was very wrong.

“Shame on you,” said one resident.

“What I want to call for is going to be an outside investigation,” said one man.

“You have brought shame on this entire town in a way that 88 years of drama has never happened,” said one resident.

7News reached out to the vice mayor for a request for comment and have not heard back.

Karsenty said he had a frightening encounter with the suspect on Friday night before the suspect walked away with something in his hands.

“He was very aggressive, he had something in the hand, I don’t know what, some kind of knife. He was screaming ‘Jew’ or something like that,” said Karsenty.

According to police, Mohammad Ali Alsaccal had a silver pen in his hand when he was arrested on Saturday.

Police said the suspect is a Jordanian citizen who has been living in Sunny Isles Beach.

Alsaccal is accused of aiming hate and anger at Jewish people at Sunny Isles Beach and threatening to hurt them.

“He was approaching groups of Jewish community members that were either on their way to worship or coming back from worship and he went ahead and he pulled some type of silver sharp object and basically, in many of the cases, he went ahead and charged at them, telling them that their the devil, that Jews must die,” said Sunny Isles Beach Police Sgt. Melissa Porro.

Police said Alsaccal threatened victims who were wearing traditional Orthodox Jewish clothing on at least three separate occasions.

The three incidents occurred not far from synagogues on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

“When he committed the final and last incident, our officers located him immediately and placed him under arrest and he’s now sitting in jail without bond,” said Porro.

Alsaccal appeared in court on Sunday where he was charged with several counts of attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and harassment related to ethnic heritage.

“Harass or intimidate with a credible threat,” said the judge.

“The defendant did state: ‘Jews are the devil and all Jews must die,'” said a court member.

According to the arrest report, which were read aloud in court, Alsaccal appeared to deny the allegations.

But witnesses who saw the suspect on the streets of Sunny Isles Beach said the police arrested the right guy.

Karsenty said he is relieved that the man is behind bars.

“They did a very good job because the police come to the synagogue. They showed us a picture and I recognized right away that it was him,” said Karsenty.

Police on Sunday said 39-year-old Mohammad Ali Alsaccal threatened victims who were wearing traditional Orthodox Jewish clothing in Sunny Isles Beach on at least three separate occasions.

Alsaccal was charged with hates crimes and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is also accused of yelling antisemitic insults.

“He was approaching groups of Jewish community members that were either on there way to worship or coming back from worship, and he went ahead and hold, some type of silver, sharp object and basically, in many of the case, he went ahead and charged at them, telling them that they’re the devil, that Jews must die,” said Sunny Isles Police Sgt. ‘I drank too much’: Former MDPD officer accused of drawing his gun after crashing into police car while driving drunk https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/i-drank-too-much-former-mdpd-officer-accused-of-drawing-his-gun-after-crashing-into-police-car-while-driving-drunk/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 12:52:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1419674 A now former Miami-Dade Police officer, once recognized by the Secret Service for his hard work, was arrested after, officials said, he crashed into a police car while driving under the influence.

Public records showed that 43-year-old Victor Montalvo posted bond, Wednesday morning. 7News cameras were there as he walked out of jail and shook his head to questions he left unanswered.

“Anything you would like to say? I mean, you are a police officer, trusted to follow the law and enforce the law,” 7News reporter Jessica Holly asked.

A 7News crew was exclusively outside the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as Montalvo walked out and hid in a lobby as he waited for his ride. Once the ride arrived, he slipped out through a rear door and took off.

Investigators said the incident unfolded around 12:45 a.m. on Tuesday while Montalvo was on duty.

The officer was heading west on Southwest 72nd Street in his unmarked black Ford Explorer SUV when he struck an occupied marked police vehicle stationed on 72nd Street.

Neighbors in the area reacted to the incident on Wednesday morning.

“Driving drunk … is just not something I can deal with,” said area resident Klaus Eylerts.

According to officials, the marked police car was blocking the inner lane to ensure the safety of road workers in the area. A police report stated that after the crash Montalvo “unsteadily” exited the SUV while the police officer in the marked vehicle checked on the workers.

A crew worker then reportedly told the police officer that Montalvo was “laying prone in the roadway.”

The officer then reportedly saw Montalvo reach for the front of his waistband, draw a semi-automatic firearm and take “what appeared to be a low-ready, prone, tactical-type position with what appeared to be a dazed or confused look on his face.”

Montalvo quickly dropped his gun after the police officer loudly ordered him to drop his weapon. The officer kicked it away and handcuffed Montalvo before placing him in the back of a police car.

At one point during the arrest, Montalvo said, “I drank too much,” to an officer. Other officers who arrived at the scene said Montalvo’s breath smelled of alcohol.

According to the arrest report, officer smelled “an odor of an alcoholic beverage on the defendant’s breath, see his watery eyes, hear his slurred speech.”

Despite police telling him of the consequences of refusing a sobriety test, Montalvo refused to take one.

While Montalvo was in the back seat of the police car, he peed himself, investigators said.

The crash resulted in injuries that were not life-threatening to both officers involved.

Montalvo, who had a 20-year tenure on the force, was charged with DUI and causing property damage. He was held on a $2,000 bond before his release.

In response to the incident, Director Stephanie V. Daniels released a statement:

“As the police Director, I am disheartened by the recent incident involving one of my officers who was arrested for driving under the influence, while on duty. My officers are held to the highest standards of conduct, both on and off duty, and the actions of this individual do not reflect the core values of our department. The officer has been relieved of duty and we will continue to work with the State Attorney’s office throughout the judicial process.”

14-year-old girl charged with battery of school police officer at Myrtle Grove Elementary; attorneys, family claim officer slammed her https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/14-year-old-girl-charged-with-battery-of-school-police-officer-at-myrtle-grove-elementary-attorneys-family-claim-officer-slammed-her/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 23:39:49 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1419392 An investigation is underway after a 14-year-old girl was arrested on Wednesday after, police said, she kicked an officer at a Miami Gardens elementary school.

But the girl’s attorneys are claiming that that the officer slammed their client and then arrested and charged the teen to cover up what the officer did.

Anez Donaldson’s attorney’s held a conference at The Handfield Firm, located at 4770 Biscayne Blvd., Tuesday afternoon.

The arrest stems from an incident after dismissal at Myrtle Grove K-8 Center in Miami Gardens in February where Donaldson said a parent was threatening and harassing students.

Then she felt someone grab her from the rear.

“It really hurts my feelings and seeing my mom cry and look at me,” said Donaldson. “When I landed on my back, he physically had forced me on my stomach.”

Donaldson said that the officer picked her up and body slammed her to the ground. She said her thumb is broken, her shoulder is dislocated, and her back is still sore as a result of the incident.

“He broke my thumb while he was trying to force me in handcuffs,” said Donaldson.

But the arrest report describes a different story. According to the arresting officer, police tried to escort an aggressive student away from an argument when she “intentionally struck Officer A. Green against his will by physically pushing the officer away while stating ‘Don’t (expletive) touch me'”

The arrest record goes on to say that the “defendant kicked and pulled away from officers.”

Donaldson was charged with battery on a police officer, resisting officer with violence and interference with educational institution.

In a statement, Miami-Dade County Public School said “we are aware of an isolated incident regarding an altercation that occurred during Wednesday’s dismissal at Myrtle Grove K-8 Center. The incident is being reviewed by administration.”

While the district reviews the incident, the attorney for the teen said they will be taking legal action.

“And hopefully when the investigation is completed, Miami-Dade Public Schools will take the necessary action to make sure that no other child have to endure what this child has had to endure,” said attorney Larry R. Handfield.

Miami-Dade Schools Police is investigating the incident.

Man charged with murder in fatal NW Miami-Dade corner store shooting; police say video shows suspect fleeing scene https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/man-charged-with-murder-in-fatal-nw-miami-dade-corner-store-shooting-police-say-video-shows-suspect-fleeing-scene/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 21:49:37 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1417889 A man accused in the fatal shooting of a longtime convenience store employee in Northwest Miami-Dade faced a judge, as police say newly released surveillance video shows the suspect fleeing the scene of the crime.

Myron Hawkins appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer, Thursday afternoon.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Hawkins. You were arrested for one count of first-degree murder,” said Glazer.

According to Miami-Dade Police, the killing took place at the Presi Stop, located at the corner of Northwest 22nd Avenue and 92nd Street, just before 9 a.m., Wednesday.

“The victim was inside of the business, talking to a friend, when an unknown subject entered the business, produced a firearm and, without provocation, shot the victim,” said MDPD Detective Andre Martin.

“It looks like he just went up to the victim and shot him in the head with a firearm,” said Glazer.

Investigators said the gunman took off running.

Police set up a perimeter and searched for Hawkins on the ground and in the air.

Area residents helped officers in their search.

“I have a witness advising that she’s seen that subject that matched the description that ran into this house,” said an officer in radio transmissions.

Surveillance video shows a man running behind a home along the 1900 block of Northwest 91st Street.

Another surveillance camera recorded officers canvassing the area.

Officers caught up with Hawkins one street over and took him into custody.

Police said the victim, later identified as 48-year-old Patrick Zamor, died inside the store.

According to a detective who testified in court, the victim had worked at the store for several years, and Hawkins was a regular customer.

“That’s it, no bond. Good day, sir,” Glazer told the suspect in court.

Police said Hawkins was homeless at the time of the shooting. Detectives on Thursday returned to Presi Stop, but they have not said anything about a possible motive.

1 dead, 1 arrested after shooting inside corner market in NW Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/1-dead-1-arrested-after-shooting-inside-corner-market-in-nw-miami-dade/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 15:17:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1417328 Shots rang out inside a corner market in Northwest Miami-Dade, leaving a man dead and leading police to arrest another.

Miami-Dade Police units responded to the scene of the shooting at the corner of Northwest 22nd Avenue and 92nd Street, just after 9 a.m., Wednesday.

“The victim was inside of the business, talking to a friend, when an unknown subject entered the business, produced a firearm and, without provocation, shot the victim,” said MDPD Detective Andre Martin.

It was an unsettling start to the day for residents of this neighborhood.

“I just heard shots: one, two, three. Then it stopped; then it started again,” said a neighbor who asked not to be identified or show her face on camera.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived at the scene to find the victim dead inside the store.

“The subject then fled in an unknown direction,” said Martin.

“Wearing a black shirt and a dark blue or black hoodie,” a dispatcher said in radio transmissions.

Police set up a perimeter along Northwest 94th Street, between 21st and 22nd avenues.

Authorities searched the area using K-9 units and a search helicopter.

“I’m advising someone’s hiding behind a shed, 2141 Northwest 91 Street,” said the dispatcher.

Miami Central High School was temporarily placed on lockdown as law enforcement continues its investigation.

Back where the killing happened, a group showed up just outside the police perimeter with a teen in tears. The group acknowledged being friends and family of the victim, but they declined to talk.

Investigators said officers were able to locate and apprehend the subject not far from the store.

Wednesday night, police identified the deceased man as 48-year-old Patrick Zamor, as they continue to investigate.

Tourist’s body found days after falling overboard in Miami River https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/tourists-body-found-days-after-falling-overboard-in-miami-river/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 19:40:52 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1416875 The body of a California man was discovered days after, officials said, he fell overboard from a boat on the Miami River.

Thirty-five-year-old Abraham Mgowano’s body was recovered Tuesday afternoon near the area of 390 NW 2nd St. in Miami after officials received a call of a body floating in the river.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials, on Saturday, at around 2:30 p.m., Mgowano fell overboard from a 44′ cabin cruiser near Lummus Park in the 400 block of Northwest River Drive.

Twelve other passengers and one operator were also on board at the time.

Miami Police, Miami-Dade Police, the U.S. Coast Guard and FWC searched for Mgowano by air and even called on divers to search for him in the water.

Despise their efforts, they weren’t able to find Mgowano.

On Tuesday morning, a person spotted a body in the river, not far from where crews had searched.

Police said Mgowano was visiting from Berkeley, and his social media accounts indicated that he was a software engineer for Google.

In a statement provided to 7News, friends of Mgowano said “Abraham, he was the greatest of all time. We call him genius, he had a big heart, he always loved us and showed us true love. Always unites us when he comes to Tanzania for visit.”

The FWC has taken over the investigation into what led up to the deadly day trip on the water.

7News has learned that Mgowano is originally from Tanzania. His friends back home told 7News they’re too upset to comment.

‘I just love dogs’: Good Samaritan saves dog who jumped into Biscayne Bay https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/i-just-love-dogs-good-samaritan-saves-dog-who-jumped-into-biscayne-bay/ Fri, 23 Feb 2024 22:12:04 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1415855 An amazing splash and save occurred on Biscayne Bay in Miami after a local resident jumped into the water to rescue a dog.

Cellphone video captured by resident Sofia Ghodsi shows a dog jumping into the bay, early Thursday morning.

“I see a dog, like a track star, running towards the bay,” said Ghodsi.

But luckily, Ghodsi saw a good Samaritan following behind the dog.

“My heart was racing. I had to see that he was going to be a good Samaritan and save this dog and that he did,” she said.

Twenty-six-year-old Blake Lazarus climbed a barrier and jumped into the water to rescue the dog.

“I just love dogs,” said Lazarus.

Lazarus said his ongoing left elbow surgery recovery did not stop him from taking action when he saw the canine in distress.

“The dog wasn’t looking back, just kept running, so I stopped thinking he would stop right here and we could corner him,” he said, “but he just hopped this ledge and sent it over into the water. It was crazy, I didn’t really expect him to do it.”

A police officer called for help, but there was no time to wait, as the dog was drifting away along the seawall.

“Just swam with my right arm and held him a little bit with my left,” said Lazarus.

The police officer helped pull both of them out of the water.

“I love dogs and would hate to see anything happen to a dog so, again, if it was my dog, I would hope someone would do the same,” said Lazarus.

Ghodsi is thankful Lazarus took action and saved the dog.

“I think it’s amazing. We need more Samaritans like him. It was such an honor to witness that,” said Ghodsi.

The rescue video, filmed by Ghodsi, has over a million and a half views on social media as of Friday afternoon.

Both Lazarus and Ghodsi said they are glad that good news went viral.

Father charged with 2nd-degree murder after shooting son in NW Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/father-charged-with-2nd-degree-murder-after-shooting-son-in-nw-miami-dade/ Thu, 22 Feb 2024 15:56:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1415248 A father was arrested after, police said, he fatally shot his son during an argument in Northwest Miami-Dade.

Sixty-eight-year-old Michael Tyndale was charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court, Thursday afternoon.

“Good afternoon, sir, you were charged with one count of second-degree murder,” said Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer.

Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue units responded to a domestic dispute along the 19000 block of West Lake Drive in Northwest Miami-Dade, Wednesday afternoon.

“[The address is] 19526 West Lake Drive. Person shot, ‘my father just shot me,'” a dispatcher said.

According to the arrest report, the family was inside the home when Tyndale and his son started arguing. Tyndale, armed with a handgun, then followed his son to the kitchen, pointed the gun at him, and fired a single shot, striking his son in the head.

Immediately after being shot, Tyndale’s son, identified as 44-year-old Markian Tyndale, fell to the ground but was able to dial 911, letting police know that his father shot him and that he was dying.

Cellphone video shot by a neighbor captured paramedics transporting Markian to the hospital.

“He was later airlifted to [HCA Florida] Aventura Hospital, where he sadly succumbed to his wounds,” said Miami-Dade Detective Andre Martin.

Tyndale, according to the arrest report, also called 911 following the shooting. He remained on the scene and was taken into custody by MDPD. He was then transported to the MDPD Homicide Bureau, where he invoked his right to an attorney.

Tyndale’s wife, who witnessed the shooting, was also detained and provided investigators with a sworn statement that he fatally shot their son.

Tyndale was arrested and was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade.

The troubling news spread to the neighborhood, Thursday morning.

“When I saw all of these police tapes, I was like ‘Wow. This is unbelievable.’ This is horrible. This is just terrible, terrible, terrible,” said Lorena Rojas.

A woman stopped by to check on Mrs. Tyndale.

“I didn’t have any person, you know, and I’m here because her sister gave me her address, and I just wanted to check on her to see how everything was going,” said the woman.

A family is now left shattered, and a grieving mother and wife is left to pick up the pieces.

On Thursday night, 7News cameras captured a private hazmat crew walking in and out of the home as they cleaned up the crime scene.

It remains unclear what the argument between Tyndale and his son was about.

The wife and mother, who witnessed the shooting, told 7News that she told police everything that happened and she is done talking about it.

Michael Tyndale remains in jail with no bond.

‘We’re living a nightmare’: Children of farmer fatally shot by MDPD in SW Miami-Dade demand answers https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/were-living-a-nightmare-children-of-farmer-fatally-shot-by-mdpd-in-sw-miami-dade-demand-answers/ Wed, 21 Feb 2024 22:21:41 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1414928 It was a tragic takedown at a Southwest Miami-Dade farm when police shot and killed a man who, they said, was armed with a gun. Now, his children are speaking out.

“The cops shot my dad, the cops shot my dad,” said Gabriela Cueli in a recorded video in the aftermath of her father’s death.

On Nov. 29, 2023, 22-year-old Gabriela was behind the camera when her father, 59-year-old Osvaldo Cueli, was shot by police in his driveway.

“We’re living a nightmare, in all honesty,” Gabriela said. “I never thought my dad would die like this.”

Ever since that tragic day, Osvaldo’s children are still trying to figure out why this happened.

Before the shooting happened, 19-year-old Osvaldo Cueli, who shares the same name with his father, said they ran off people trespassing on their 10-acre farm, located at Southwest 182nd Avenue and 192nd Street, twice on the same day.

“My dad honked the horn like that twice and then they saw us and instantly started running,” Osvaldo said.

Osvaldo also said that his father took a gun with him the third time when he checked for intruders and drove his car to the front gate, while he followed his father in a golf cart, at around 3 p.m.

Then, two black trucks pulled up.

“One pulls up this way, and one pulls out there. As he turns around, they are already shooting at him,” he said.

Osvaldo said he had no idea that the people who arrived were police.

“I thought they were random people trying to kill us. There was no light, there was no sirens. There was not one word spoken. They just started shooting out of the car,” he said.

“Did you see your father point the weapon?” the reporter asked.

“No.” he said.

“Did your father fire a weapon?” asked the reporter?

“No.” he said.

According to Miami-Dade Police, unmarked vehicles were checking out reports of a stolen car that looked a lot like the one the father parked. When they arrived, the man coming out of the car produced a gun, and that’s when shots were fired.

“That’s when the subject, armed with a firearm, produced a firearm, and that’s when shots were fired,” said MDPD Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

Police said the victim fired multiple shots at the unmarked truck and that was when officers returned fire.

The video, recorded by the children, shows them yelling at the officers after the father was shot dead.

“Why? He’s not breathing!’ Gabriela yells in tears.

After Osvaldo was down, his children watched as, they said, nothing was done to help their dying father.

“They walked all over him, like a rag doll, as if he was nothing, as if he was trash on the floor,” said Gabriela. “They did not care. Smiling all in our faces, telling us, ‘Everything is going to be OK, everything’s fine.’ There was no ambulance, there was no airlift; nothing was done to try to help him.”

The man’s children added the plainclothes officers never identified themselves.

Nearly three months later, they are sharing video of their nightmare as they wait for the outcome of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation.

“Get justice for my dad. He was murdered; he didn’t deserve that,” said Osvaldo.

“They just – they killed him. They didn’t try to help him at all,” said Gabriela.

The car that officers were called to investigate was not the stolen car they were looking for.

Osvaldo Cueli’s children said they were both interviewed by the FDLE, and they’ve retained an attorney.

1 arrested in connection to attempted burglary at Aventura jewelry store after authorities raid home in SW Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/1-arrested-in-connection-to-attempted-burglary-at-aventura-jewelry-store-after-authorities-raid-apartment-in-sw-miami-dade/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 15:37:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1414435 One man was arrested in connection to an attempted burglary that left an Aventura jewelry store damaged after officers raided a home in Southwest Miami-Dade. Several people were also detained during the raid.

7News cameras on Tuesday morning captured Aventura Police and multiple Miami-Dade Police Special Response Team vehicles arriving at home in the area off of 57th and Southwest 162nd Avenue. Officers also deployed several flash-bangs inside the home.

Residents in the area reacted to the raid.

“I was awakened by my younger brother, who does attend the high school across the street, saying that he was afraid to go outside because he had heard some really loud, what seemed to be gun shots,” Samantha Mazo said.

While no shots were fired, officers broke down the door at the home and were able to bring out several people in cuffs while they searched the residence.

“We saw some people being detained but they were released,” Mazo said. “We did see one sir in handcuffs and he was taken away from what it seemed to be, and after that, it was just more coming in and out of the house.”

According to Aventura PD, a warrant was executed at the residence following a monthslong investigation into the attempted burglary that happened at the International Jewelers Exchange, located at 19275 Biscayne Blvd.

The jewelry store was damaged on Oct. 19, 2023 after, police said, three would-be burglars crashed into it with a flatbed truck. They left the store empty-handed after finding out the display cases were empty.

As a result of the raid, Luis Angel Herrera Ramirez, 31, was arrested.

Mazo were shocked to see so many armored vehicles and so many officers in tactical gear wielding long guns.

“To know that something flew under the radar is terrifying,” Mazo said. “You never know who your neighbors are,” she said.

While the home raided was in Miami-Dade, the case originated out of Avenutra, which is about an hour away.

“It was concerning, it was weird,” Mazo said. “Usually, we deal with the regular Miami-Dade, but Aventura, it kind of, more red flags, you know, what really happened, what’s going on, how deep is, it is that serious, is it dangerous? We still live here.”

Ramirez was charged with one count of burglary/smash and grab, one count of grand theft auto due to the U-Haul truck used to crash into the store that was stolen and one count of criminal mischief/vandalism.

Police are still looking for the other subjects involved in the attempted burglary at the jewelry store.

He was transported to the Dade County jail.

The owner of International Jewelers Exchange told 7News he is thankful for the work the Aventura Police Department has done.

Aunt reflects on using CPR to save 5-month-old nephew 10 years ago https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/aunt-reflects-on-using-cpr-to-save-5-month-old-nephew-10-years-ago/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 10:47:45 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1414233 A series of photos captured a woman’s determination to save her nephew. On that day, the camera offended her, but 10 years later, she’s thankful for the photos and the powerful message they sent.

“Now in retrospect, I can appreciate the value of that moment that he was able to capture because it brought so much awareness to the importance of CPR, more specifically, infant CPR,” said Pamela Rauseo who saved her nephew.

The photos were taken on Feb. 20, 2014. Rauseo got out of her vehicle on State Road 836 with her nephew, Sebastian, in her arms, who was not breathing.

“Next thing I remember, I got down on my knees and I started performing CPR,” she said. “I remember at one point, looking over and seeing somebody taking pictures.”

Miami Herald photographer, Al Diaz, was among the good Samaritans who flagged down help and then captured the images. Since Rauseo knew CPR, that 5-month-old baby is now a healthy 10-year-old boy.

“He has a big personality, extremely smart,” she said,

The boy’s mom and aunt said he’s a special young man who has a bright future that will include learning CPR.

“It will be cool to know it, so are you going to learn?” Rauseo her nephew, to which he responded, “Yeah.”

“My advise is, for anyone that doesn’t know, learn,” she said. “It’s a minimal time investment and it’s something that save a loved ones life, in this case, my nephew.”

The family later learned that the reason Sebastian was not able to breath that day was because he had cysts on his esophagus.

If you’re interested in learning CPR, the American Red Cross offers classes. For more information, click here.

Police investigation underway after 3 horses found slaughtered in SW Miami-Dade field https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/police-investigation-underway-after-3-horses-found-slaughtered-in-sw-miami-dade-field/ Fri, 16 Feb 2024 17:28:56 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1413452 Three horses, including a therapy horse, were stolen and slaughtered in Southwest Miami-Dade, police said.

Miami-Dade Police officers responded to the scene of Southwest 124th Street and 197th Avenue after reports of three horse carcasses, Friday morning.

Officers arrived to find the carcasses, two female and a male, in a field.

One of the animals was identified by the owner as a 16-year-old female therapy horse named Paloma. She was one of the horses that, police said, were taken from their home and slaughtered.

“To be honest, there are no words to express what you can feel,” said David Yepez, Paloma’s owner.

Video footage from 7Skyforce showed the scene from above as investigators canvassed the area for clues while the remains of the horses were left scattered on the pasture.

Investigators found the remains of the horses close to the farm where the animals lived.

Yepez said his horse touched the lives of many families through her therapy work.

“A horse that gave so much to kids, to parents that helped out, to find such a cruel ending, it’s something that’s not, you know, you wouldn’t expect it,” said Yepez.

The killing of the animals was likely for the illegal sale of horse meat.

“By someone who just didn’t care, and in an inhumane way, and all they cared about was their pockets,” said MDPD Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

This incident marks the second horse slaughter 7News has reported on this year. On Jan. 3, two horses were killed in Southwest Miami-Dade after their owner reported them stolen.

“I’ve been out here for 25 years, never thought it could happen to me,” she said. “I thought I was safe. I had the lights, the cameras, the dogs. I moved out here to keep my horses safe, and it happened to me.”

Police suspected that the animals were killed for their meat, which can be sold anywhere for $10 to $20 a pound. Authorities are still investigating that case.

It is unclear when the horses in this most recent case were stolen, but it was presumably overnight. An investigation is now underway.

“For someone to just be able to take these horses, slaughter them — God knows how they did it and how much pain they had to endure — only because they are just worried about making money and having some type of monetary gain,” said Zabaleta.

Police said eating horse meat is not healthy for humans because of the medicine given to horses.

If you have any information on these killings, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Memorial created at Miami intersection where mother was fatally struck by dump truck https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/memorial-created-at-miami-intersection-where-mother-was-fatally-struck-by-dump-truck/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 17:42:30 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1413065 A grieving community created a makeshift memorial at an intersection in Miami where one of their own was killed after she was struck by a dump truck while she was pushing her baby in a stroller, leaving loved ones devastated.

7News cameras on Thursday captured the memorial at Northeast 22nd Street and Biscayne Boulevard, where flowers and candles were placed below leftover crime scene tape.

According to City of Miami Police the crash took the life of 33-year-old Jaklin Sabag at around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Melissa Gardner, a member of the local WhatsApp group “Margaret Pace Park Moms,” said she helped set up the memorial because she was devastated to hear about the tragedy that took the life of one of their members.

“It’s heartbreaking, heartbreaking, so all of us are going to gather here,” said Gardner.

Hours later, 7News captured loved ones and members of the group consoling each other and wiping away tears next to the memorial.

“I’m happy that we are all able to come here today right now to remember her,” said group member Alexandra Paz.

Detectives said Sabag was pushing her 8-month-old son’s stroller when she started to cross busy Biscayne Boulevard between cars.

“The truck was at a standstill due to the traffic that was heading southbound on Biscayne Boulevard,” said Miami Police Officer Michael Vega.

Police said Sabag was not on the pedestrian crosswalk when she stepped in front of the flatbed dumpster truck.

“She was crossing in front of the truck that was at a standstill, and the truck [driver] has no visual of her, and he accelerates as the traffic moves forward and unfortunately runs her over,” said Vega.

The truck driver, detectives said, wasn’t traveling above five miles an hour and didn’t know he had just run over someone. Sabag was pinned underneath the truck, where she died.

“I didn’t know her. We went to the same playground we went to the same park, we are neighbors,” said Laura Espejo, another member of Margaret Pace Park Moms.

“It was really unfortunate. I think a lot of us, we kind of walk this route every day to go to Walgreens or to go to Granier, the local bakery,” said Paz, “so I was think it was really tragic for all of us. We kept saying how heartbreaking it was.”

Authorities reviewed surveillance video of the accident.

Detectives said the truck driver stayed and cooperated with the investigation.

“When the guy saw it, he just put his hands there, and like he did not know how to react,” said Juan Camilo Giron, a witness. “Like, he wasn’t sure about what was going on, for the way that he was just walking and coming in and out like this.”

Multiple people in the area rushed to the scene and were able to hold on to the baby until he was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital to be checked out.

While the stroller was left mangled, the baby was not hurt.

7News on Wednesday spoke with a family friend who said Sabag was wonderful and was loved., adding that her family from New York has traveled to South Florida and are making arrangements.

“It’s emotional for all of us, because it could have been any one of us,” said Gardner.

Some of Thursday’s vigil may have known Sabag, whereas others didn’t, but those who are part of the local moms group are bonded by the love a mother has for her children.

“I can’t think about the baby. I can’t,” said Espejo. “[Sabag] is already causing all of this. She’s already causing that we make a huge unity of this neighborhood, because we all have families.”

Several family members or friends of the victim came to the memorial but did not want to talk to 7News.

The incident remains under investigation.

Suspect accused of bailing out of Mercedes in South Beach faces judge; other subject at large https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/suspect-accused-of-bailing-out-of-mercedes-in-south-beach-faces-judge-other-subject-at-large/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 03:01:20 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1412766 A suspect accused of resisting arrest on Miami Beach following a chaotic series of events appeared in bond court.

Thirty-year-old Javaugh Carrawell was arrested by Miami Beach Police after bailing out from his black Mercedes Maybach following an attempted traffic stop.

After a brief police chase, Carrawell was found hiding in the bushes of a condominium in the area of Ninth Street and Meridian Avenue.

“Hands up, hands up!” police are heard saying in surveillance video obtained by 7News.

According to the arrest report, this all started with an attempted traffic stop in the 1100 block of Meridian Avenue. Police stopped the car because of its dark tinted windows and lack of taillight.

The car stopped for a moment, but it was only for Carrawell and the driver to hop out of the car and take off on foot.

The surveillance video showed the suspect running and jumping over a fence. Witnesses pointed out the suspect’s hiding spot, prompting a police response.

Shortly after police ordered Carrawell to leave his hiding spot with his hands up, they found a gun.

“I see it, I see it! There’s a gun, there’s a gun!” said an officer.

Police found an unloaded gun tossed on the ground.

As the suspect was taken to jail, police towed the Maybach, with Tennessee license plates, away for evidence.

Carrawell appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Steven Leifman, Wednesday afternoon.

“Point the public defender, $650 total,” said Leifman.

“Thank you sir,” said Carrawell to the judge.

“You’re welcome. Have a good day,” said Leifman.

According to police, Carrawell has an extensive criminal history. He faces a charge of resisting arrest and a weapons charge.

The driver of the vehicle is still on the loose, as police continue their search.

Carrawell’s bond is set at $650.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of the second subject, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

‘Shutting the door on spring break’: Miami Beach officials outline methods to deter chaos during spring break https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/shutting-the-door-on-spring-break-miami-beach-officials-outline-methods-to-deter-chaos-during-spring-break/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 21:16:01 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1412355 Miami Beach officials are outlining new laws and regulations to dismantle a decades-long tradition as March approaches.

On Tuesday, during a meeting at the Loews Hotel, located at 1601 Collins Ave., officials discussed a list of changes that will help aid in stopping the lawlessness.

Spring break at Miami Beach is infamous for its shootings, stampedes and all around bad behavior.

“We won’t tolerate disorderly conduct, unruly behavior, stampedes, shootings, loss of life,” said Miami Beach Group 3 Commissioner Alex J. Fernandez. We’re shutting the door on spring break and that’s the message that we are putting out here.”

Over the years, city leaders have tried to cut down on the chaos, but this year, the city is taking its most drastic measures yet.

“Essentially, we want to divorce ourselves from spring break,” said Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne A. Jones.

“Miami Beach is ready, Miami Beach will not tolerate any behavior that is outside the norm,” said Miami Beach City Manager Alina Hudak.

The plan to quell the spring break madness includes pumping up paid parking prices in lots and garages with prices as high as $100 a day.

“If you’re seeking to drive into Miami Beach, driving in with guns, with drugs, you won’t have a place to park,” Fernandez said. “We’re raising prices parking rates up to $100, we’re closing the garages early, sidewalk cafes will be closed early and we’ve been announcing for a year now that it’s possible that we’ll have a curfew during spring break.”

During the two busiest weekends in March, sidewalk cafes will be closed and scooter and slingshot rentals will be off limits.

Visitors to the beach can also expect several DUI checkpoints and license plate readers that will scan the causeways.

If a person’s vehicle gets towed, they are expected to pay up to double to retrieve their vehicle. There will also be security checkpoints for those who head to the beach from Ocean Drive and no one will be allowed access after 6 p.m.

“Choking down the causeways, choking down the businesses, choking down traffic, choking down parking, it’s totally anti-hospitality,” said David Wallack, owner of Mango’s Tropical Cafe.

Wallack said that scheduling three-day concerts with international allure would have taken March in a better direction.

“Literally without a fantastic special event,” he said. “Look at what we are left with. Preparing for war,” said Wallack.

Homeowners hope that the checkpoints will keep the city safe.

“We don’t want to continue to have this disrupting life of the people who actually live here and also the life of the people who want to come and have a good time as a tourist,” said Andres Asion.

Just like in years past, Miami Beach Police will have help from law enforcement agencies across South Florida.

City leaders are hoping that this March passes without the madness.

“We’re proactively sending a message out there. You come to Miami Beach, you come have a good time and enjoy our city but if you come to break the laws, there’s going to be serious consequences,” Fernandez said.

There are still no dates and times for curfews as city officials said those will be put in place as needed.

Dashcam video shows FHP troopers arresting man accused of spray painting over pro-Palestinian graffiti on I-95 https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/dashcam-video-shows-fhp-troopers-arresting-man-accused-of-spray-painting-over-pro-palestinian-graffiti-on-i-95/ Mon, 12 Feb 2024 21:43:22 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1412012 Newly released dash camera video from the Florida Highway Patrol captured the arrest of a man painting over pro-Palestinian messages on Interstate 95. The man told troopers that he thought what he was doing was the right thing.

“I just want to delete that’s it, I tried to delete it,” Yoni Maimon said on police footage.

Maimon, 30, ended up in cuffs, but in the end, his charges were dropped.

The arrest happened on Jan. 2 after police received a report of a possible vandalism along I-95 near Marina Mile Boulevard.

Troopers found Maimon with a can of spray paint in his hand, attempting to cover pro-Palestinian messages. By the time troopers arrived, he had already covered two sections reading “Free Gaza” and “Free Palestine” with silver paint.

Not long after they arrived, the dashcam video showed Maimon being placed in cuffs and put in the back of a cruiser, where he tried to explain to troopers that he didn’t create the graffiti and was trying to get rid of it.

“Why didn’t you call us? Why didn’t you call law enforcement?” the trooper said.

“I didn’t know I can call because I saw people do it so I wanted to delete it,” said Maimon on police video footage.

“You didn’t draw?” a trooper said.

“No, of course not,” Maimon said. “I just want to delete everything over there with the spray. I just want to delete. I’m from Israel and it’s a big fight right now with Israel and Gaza.”

Maimon told troopers that his boss was the one who sent him to do it. He works for a non-profit organization that helps Jewish families in South Florida and in Israel.

“We’re only trying to cover hate. This guy is an angel,” said Eran Hazan, Maimon’s boss, in an interview with 7News. “He helps families from the moment he wakes up in the morning until he goes to sleep.”

Hazan said he thinks FHP went too far that day.

FHP responded with “The arrestee is not the company hired to remove any graffiti. Therefore is considered vandalism/criminal mischief.”

“It’s not your property,” a trooper said.

“I know,” Maimon said.

The case was turned over to the Broward State Attorney where prosecutors painted a different picture for proceeding and chose to drop it. The state attorney said that the defendant in this case was covering up something he thought was offensive and was not attempting to destroy property.

Maimon said he’s learned his lesson but doesn’t regret what he did. He also said that he will report any graffiti instead of taking matters into his own hands.

Surveillance video shows man attempting to kidnap child at Miami Beach CVS; suspect arrested, charged https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/surveillance-video-shows-man-attempting-to-kidnap-child-at-miami-beach-cvs-suspect-arrested-charged/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 21:12:27 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1410636 Newly released surveillance video from a Miami Beach CVS showed the moments when a stranger attempted to snatch a child, leading to the man’s arrest.

The incident happened at the CVS located at 7400 Collins Ave., at around 11:55 a.m., Thursday.

The suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Nicolas Metternich Sternaman, is seen entering the pharmacy and immediately grabbing the boy, who was heading toward the exit with his father, and turned for the door.

The arrest report states Sternaman “violently grabbed the child by his neck from behind, lifted the child off the ground.”

As soon as the suspect took the child, the child’s father grabbed the man and a struggle ensued.

The arrest report states, “The victim’s father, in fear of his child being abducted, immediately grabbed the defendant, and the defendant let the child off of his grasp.”

The boy’s father was able to fight off the predator, and his son was pulled to safety.

Eventually, the man broke free and fled the scene.

According to Miami Beach Police, the child’s father ran after the man.

The arrest report states, “[Officers] responded to the area and observed the witnesses and the suspect running. The defendant was then taken into custody without incident.”

A 7News crew showed the surveillance video to passers-by Olivia Nguyn and her mother after they saw the news cameras on Collins Avenue. They were on a stroll close to the CVS.

“Oh, my God, that was insane,” said Nguyn. “I can’t believe that happened, like, literally right there. In the daylight, yeah. Luckily, his dad was there.”

The arrest report states, “[The child] sustained redness in his face and his back. The child was visibly shaking and would not let go of his mother’s grasp in fear.”

Sternaman has been charged with kidnapping and battery. Police said he invoked his rights and did not give them any kind of statement when he was placed under arrest.

He is being held on a $1,000 bond, but no bond has been set yet on the kidnapping charge.

The suspect was set to appear before a judge on Friday but refused to appear in the morning and in the afternoon.

Lanes reopen after rollover crash on Florida Turnpike near I-75 exit blocks traffic in NW Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/lanes-reopen-after-ollover-crash-on-florida-turnpike-near-i-75-exit-blocks-traffic-in-nw-miami-dade/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 13:44:43 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1410390 A fiery rollover crash on the southbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike extension, near Interstate 75, led to severe traffic jams and road closures, Thursday morning.

7SkyForce was overhead around 8:30 a.m. showing the aftermath of the damage: An 18-wheeler was on its side while skid marks appeared on the street. Several cars and another 18-wheeler was near the rolled over big-rig.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a tractor-trailer lost control and collided into seven other vehicles. After the collision, the semi-truck collided into the median concrete barrier, leading it to overturn and catch fire.

Firefighters have since out out the blaze but the tractor-trailer was still emitting smoke as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue worked the situation.

Authorities shut down the northbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike as a medical helicopter landed on the road for a hospital transportation. Those have since been reopened.

FHP said non-life-threatening injuries have been reported.

“This is going to be a trauma alert, we’re going to need air rescue en-route,” said a dispatcher over Broadcastify police scanner. “One patient with bilateral broken arms.”

Hazmat crews were also at the scene as they dealt with diesel fuel that spilled onto the roadway.

Cleanup crews worked to clear the area.

Several lanes that were closed have since been reopened.

Police arrest suspect after 1 shot following fight in parking lot of Palmetto General Hospital https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/police-arrest-suspect-after-1-shot-following-fight-in-parking-lot-of-palmetto-general-hospital/ Wed, 07 Feb 2024 17:15:11 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1409830 Police have arrested a suspect on Wednesday after a shooting at a South Florida hospital left one man injured following an altercation outside of a Hialeah hospital.

The suspect, 21-year-old Luis Martinez Rodriguez, was charged with attempted second-degree murder.

Hialeah Police responded to shots fired in the parking lot of Palmetto General Hospital, located at 2001 West 68th Street, Tuesday night.

Family members and the victim identified the shooter as Rodriguez.

According to police, there was a family dispute at the hospital. During the argument, Rodriguez pulled out a firearm and shot a family member one time in the arm.

“We have been able to arrest the person responsible for all of this,” Hialeah Police Department Lt. Eddie Rodriguez said.

He then fled the scene.

Police said the argument occurred while a woman was inside recovering from giving birth. The father of the baby got into an argument with one of her relatives.

During their investigation, detectives were able to contact Rodriguez and convinced him to return to the hospital. He was then taken into custody and remains at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

“Rodriguez pulled out a firearm and shot a family member and he fled the scene prior to police arrival,” said Lt. Rodriguez.

The victim, 43-year-old Carlos Costa, was rushed into the emergency room, which led to a brief lockdown.

He is expected to be OK.

Rodriguez appeared in court on Wednesday where he was read his charges.

“You said he shot the victim because he verbally disrespected him?” the judge asked.

The judge denied Rodriguez bond.

Rodriguez could be facing up to 15 years in prison.

“You’re talking about a 21 year old, recent arrival from Cuba, who has already committed a crime and now he’s not going to be able to see his child grow up,” said Rodriguez.

Parents of former OnlyFans model charged with murdering boyfriend bond out after arriving at TGK https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/parents-of-former-onlyfans-model-charged-with-murdering-boyfriend-bond-out-after-arriving-at-tgk/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 13:51:36 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1409140 The parents of a social media model, charged with fatally stabbing her boyfriend in Miami, have bonded out after being extradited to Miami on charges related to their daughters’ case.

Exclusive 7News video showed Kim Dewayne Clenney, 60, and Deborah Lyn Clenney, 57, arriving at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center early Tuesday morning.

The two appeared in bond court, where their attorneys asked the judge to request corrections to allow them to bond since they’ve already posted their bond.

“Sir, you were arrested for, it says, offenses against computer users,” the judge said. “These are serious charges so it’s important that you stay in touch with your attorney.”

Their attorneys released the following statement to 7News:

On January 30th, Kim and Deborah Clenney were surprised in their home in Texas by Florida authorities executing an extradition warrant to place them under arrest and transport them back to Florida. Recognizing the absurdity and excessiveness of this action, a Texas judged ordered them released after two days. Today, Kim and Deborah voluntarily surrendered to the Turner Gilford Knight Correction Center in Miami Dade County, posted bond and are being released. They have both been charged with unlawful access to a computer. The allegations are frivolous and entirely without merit. The charge is such an overreach by law enforcement that it seems clear they are being targeted for being witnesses in their daughter’s case. This misuse of power and show of force is simply an attempt to bully them and scare them off from supporting their daughter, which will never happen.

Ratzan & Faccidomo
https://twitter.com/fox_sheldon/status/1754880325954482213?s=20

Both were previously taken into custody in Austin, Texas, on an out-of-state warrant. A Miami-Dade circuit judge signed arrest warrants for the couple last week, charging them each with a felony count of unauthorized access to a computer that once belong to their daughter’s boyfriend, Christian Obumseli.

Their daughter, 27-year-old Courtney Clenney, faces the same new charge. Jail records show she’s been held without bond on a second-degree murder charge since August 2022.

Clenney, who had used the name Courtney Tailor on such platforms as Instagram and OnlyFans, fatally stabbed Obumseli at the couple’s Miami apartment in April 2022 as the culmination of a “tempestuous and combative relationship” that began in November 2020, prosecutors said previously.

Clenney has acknowledged killing Obumseli but said she was acting in self-defense. Her attorney, Frank Prieto, previously said that Obumseli was regularly abusive.

An attorney for the Obumseli family released a statement following the arrest of Deborah and Kim:

“The Obumseli family is saddened to hear the reports that Courtney’s parents illegally took possession of Christian’s laptop. This is yet another disturbing reminder of the horrible crimes committed against their family. We support the State Attorney’s Office’s thorough investigation into Christian’s murder and continue to seek justice through the criminal and civil justice system. We are reserving further comment at this time until documentation about this arrest is released by law enforcement.

What cannot be forgotten is the daily pain felt by Christian’s loved ones because a smart, caring, critical member of their lives was stolen from them because of failures by his abuser, the One Paraiso apartment complex, and the other security and management companies who did not act to protect this innocent victim of domestic violence.”

Kimberly Wald

In January, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office released a video of a confrontation between Courtney and Obumseli, showing the violent nature of their relationship. This incident was one of many caught on video before Courtney murdered the 27-year-old on April 3, 2022.

Clenney was arrested in Hawaii several days after the stabbing, but investigators believe she gave Obumseli’s computer to her parents some time between the killing and her arrest. According to the arrest warrants, detectives recovered text messages where the parents discuss trying to gain access to the computer. She is currently awaiting trail for murder.

Miami-Dade officials said the parents had no contact with their daughter during their time behind bars.

The attorney for the parents has scheduled a news conference on Wednesday morning. The Clenneys are expected to be there.

Officer suspended after suspected DUI crash led to no charges filed against driver https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/officer-suspended-after-suspected-dui-crash-led-to-no-charges-filed-against-driver/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 21:39:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1408733 A Pembroke Pines officer, involved in the case of a suspected drunk driver that crashed into two cars, has been suspended and ordered to take a 40-hour driving under the influence course, following an investigation into his actions.

The case stems from a traffic stop on June 11 on Pines Boulevard when an SUV rear-ended two cars. One of the cars was an unmarked vehicle belonging to an off-duty City of Miami officer.

“I’m the one that stopped him. I’m off duty. He’s going to be DUI,” said the officer in body camera video.

Body camera video showed the driver appearing to stumble, had trouble following directions and even made a nasty hand gesture to the officer.

As the hours passed, even though the off-duty officer said he was waiting for the DUI unit to arrive, they never came.

According to the incident report, written by Pembroke Pines officer Zarick Jackson, the DUI investigation was not done because of a language barrier.

“A DUI investigation was not conducted by me due to the driver of vehicle 1 only speaking Spanish and me only speaking English,” the report read.

Jackson also said that he did suspect alcohol use.

7News has learned that an internal affairs investigation into how the crash is handled is complete. Jackson has been given a 20-hour suspension and will take a 40-hour DUI training course.

The suspect’s case is closed after he had his crashed car towed away and paid over $300 in fines and fees.

DeSantis discusses tackling growing homeless population during Miami Beach stop https://wsvn.com/news/politics/desantis-discusses-tackling-growing-homeless-population-during-miami-beach-stop/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 17:47:51 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1408667 During a South Florida stop, Gov. Ron DeSantis talked about tackling the growing homeless population in some areas.

7News cameras on Monday captured DeSantis speaking at a news conference at a venue on Washington Avenue in Miami Beach.

DeSantis told the crowd that Florida will continue to be a “Law and Order” state, and plans to work with the Legislature. He also specifically mentioned House Bill 1365, which would make unauthorized public camping illegal.

https://twitter.com/GovRonDeSantis/status/1754598620198760610?s=20

This refers to people putting up tents on streets, along sidewalks and parks where camping is not allowed.

“My bottom line is this; people that live in Miami Beach, people that live anywhere in the state of Florida, I take it as like kind of the dad test. Can I just take my kids and just walk down the street?” DeSantis said. “You should be able to do that at every place without having to worry about homeless or being accosted by somebody. So I think these protections will be very good for Floridians. It will ensure that we don’t see any part of our state descend into the madness that you see in places like San Francisco, New York City or Seattle.”

DeSantis also talked about more financial support from the state for municipalities that need more help for sheltering the homeless population and help with mental health services.

Ron Book with the Homeless Trust said that Miami-Dade has a fraction of homeless compared to other big cities.

“There’s a reason we don’t look like like them, and that’s because we follow a discipline plan, we have a dedicated source of revenue to end homelessness, and we’ve reduced unsheltered homelessness by 90%,” Book said.

Book supports the bill but said it’s critical that the encampments stick to a one year-time limit.

“Nobody, nobody, has had the successes in this country that we’ve had in Miami-Dade,” he said. “I wish the 66 other counties in the state have what we have.”

If the bill is passed, it will go into effect in October.

Toddler twins dead following medical call in NW Miami-Dade; woman in coma https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/toddler-twins-dead-following-medical-call-in-nw-miami-dade-woman-in-critical-condition/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 11:45:02 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1407582 Police confirmed that 3-year-old fraternal twins, a boy and a girl, have died following a medical emergency in Northwest Miami-Dade.

Miami-Dade Police units responded to an emergency call involving two children near the off-ramp of Interstate 95 onto the Florida Turnpike extension or State Road 826, at around 2 a.m. on Friday.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found two children in the back seat of a silver SUV.

“There was an unresponsive child and shortly after that, another call was received that another juvenile was unresponsive,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Andre Martin.

“Two children in cardiac arrest. One person is performing CPR on one child,” said one woman on dispatcher radio.

Officials said a woman was found at the scene, and she jumped over the railing of the on-ramp, landing on the train tracks below.

Another dispatcher said, “The mom jumped off the highway onto the train tracks under right where we are.”

Family members have identified the woman as 42-year-old Shirlene Alcime. They said she is the mother of the deceased children.

The father of the toddlers, speaking to 7News in Creole, said he was in shock and wants to know what led up to this and why it happened.

“Two very interesting things, very loving kids,” he said. “Normally when I come in the door, they come and they hug me. I can’t, really, I can’t talk right now.”

The father said the twins went to work with their mother on Thursday and never returned. He said he repeatedly called them but got no answer.

“Her and I had no issues. I don’t know what happened with the kids. I’m not sure how they died,” said the father. “That’s surprising for me to see because that’s not the kind of person she is.”

The details discussed among emergency personnel were confirmed by Martin at around 7:30 a.m.

The children were transported to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead. Alcime was transported to Aventura Hospital where she is now in a coma.

“Right now, our investigators are working to piece this tragic incident together,” said Martin. “There are many questions that they have that they are working to find answers to.”

Friends of the family are also in disbelief as they wait to hear an update on the mother’s condition.

“They’re happy kids. They’re nice kids, this is so hard to see innocent little kids and they’re gone,” said one friend.

“We want to get to the bottom of it and find out why,” said another friend.

Detectives said the children did not have any obvious signs of trauma on their bodies.

Miami-Dade Police officers and Florida Highway Patrol deputies are working together to investigate the incident.

FWC investigating reports of Florida panther in SW Miami-Dade neighborhood https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/fwc-investigating-reports-of-florida-panther-in-sw-miami-dade-neighborhood/ Thu, 01 Feb 2024 22:35:27 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1407318 Florida Fish and Wildlife officials swarmed a Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood after a resident reported spotting a Florida panther behind his home.

Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission arrived early Thursday morning to the area of Southwest 131st Terrace and 100th Avenue.

7Skyforce captured the scene as officials combed through a popular bird watching spot in search of the panther.

Nicolas Crespo said that he ran into a man who took the picture of the big cat.

“I said, ‘Are you a birder?’ He said, ‘No, I’m a conservationist, and I have just photographed a Florida Panther eating a cat, there,'” said Crespo.

Crespo said the man called police, and the search for the panther began.

Officials said the goal is to find the panther and relocate it since it is an endangered animal.

“I know there is only a few 100 Florida panthers out there. So hopefully they can catch it safely,” said neighbor Delano Cicconi.

They said the animal could also be a danger to a neighborhood full of children and pets.

Neighbors said they are guarding their pets, and they hope the panther is found.

“Yes, I told the cat, ‘Inside no matter what,'” said Crespo.

“Now, hearing that there is a panther, that is very scary,” said Cicconi.

As for the picture and the man who claimed to have seen the panther, he told the 7News morning crew that he didn’t have time for an interview.

Police are asking residents to exercise caution until officials are able to locate the endangered animal.

Late Thursday afternoon, FWC officials issued a statement saying they are investigating “reports of a possible Florida panther sighting in Miami-Dade County” that “are likely due to sightings of a domestic cat.”

Parents of former OnlyFans model charged with killing boyfriend arrested for allegedly hacking into victim’s laptop https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/parents-of-former-onlyfans-model-charged-with-killing-boyfriend-arrested-for-allegedly-hacking-into-victims-laptop/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 03:25:42 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1406617 The parents of a former OnlyFans model charged with murdering her boyfriend at a Miami high-rise were arrested after, officials said, they tampered with evidence regarding the case.

While Courtney Clenney awaits her trial for her boyfriend’s murder, there is now a new twist in the case.

On Tuesday, 60-year-old Kim Clenney and his wife, 57-year-old Deborah Lyn Clenney, were arrested in their hometown in Austin, Texas.

Courtney herself now faces additional charges as well.

The arrest of the 26-year-old’s parents comes after the alleged hacking of a laptop that belonged to the murder victim, Christian Obumseli. The Clenney family had the computer in their possession after Obumseli’s 2022 killing.

In court documents first obtained by 7News, authorities alleged “Courtney Taylor Clenney (“subject 1”), Kim Dewayne Clenney (“subject 2”), and Deborah Lyn Clenney (“subject 3″) who, together as principals of one another along with other uncharged individuals, did commit one (1) count of unauthorized access or excessive access to a computer, computer system, or electronic device of Christian Obumseli and/or his estate, a third-degree felony.”

The arrest form alleges that while Courtney was in jail, she and her parents worked with others to obtain a PIN code to gain “unlawful access” to the late Obumseli’s computer.

Once they figured out the code, Kim texted the group, “Hell yeah! That PIN worked!”

During a Miami-Dade court hearing in 2022, Courtney’s parents shared an “I love you” with their defendant daughter.

Now, all three of them are defendants.

Courtney has claimed self-defense in the death of Obumseli.

Attorneys who are representing the Obumseli family responded to the arrest of Clenney’s parents.

“Clearly, what they did was illegal. Clearly, the state attorney’s office was correct in filing charges,” said Larry Handfield.

“What happened here is just another example of what this family continues to do, that Courtney committed this heinous crime, her parents now are committing this crime of breaking into his laptop,” said Kimberly Wald. “Obumseli’s family didn’t deserve this. Christian didn’t deserve this, he is the victim, and the family knows that justice will prevail.”

Wald also released the following statement:

The Obumseli family is saddened to hear the reports that Courtney’s parents illegally took possession of Christian’s laptop.

What cannot be forgotten is the daily pain felt by Christian’s loved ones because a smart, caring, critical member of their lives was stolen from them because of failures by his abuser, the One Paraiso apartment complex, and the other security and management companies who did not act to protect this innocent victim of domestic violence

Kimberly Wald

Documents connected to the hacking case also named Courtney’s legal defense team members as involved persons, none of whom have been charged.

It remains unclear when Kim and Deborah will make their first virtual court appearance.

Ronald Reagan Senior High teacher arrested on pornography charges; fired after alleged indecent act in video https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/ronald-reagan-senior-high-teacher-arrested-on-pornography-charges-fired-after-alleged-indecent-act-in-video/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 15:41:53 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1406360 A teacher at Ronald Reagan Senior High School has been arrested on pornography charges.

Wesly Alvarez, 45, a Fine Arts teacher, was fired from the school in Doral following a Miami-Dade Schools investigation into his alleged actions.

According to the arrest report, students complained to the school resource officer and the school principal that a Snapchat video was circulating of Alvarez exposing his genitals in front of the school bathroom mirror. Student witnesses said Alvarez was wearing the same clothing to work that day as they saw on the video.

Alvarez faced a judge on Tuesday, who placed his bond at $7,500. The judge prohibited Alvarez from having any unsupervised contact with any children, with the exception of his own children.

Police arrived to the school, called Alvarez to the school office, where he admitted to the allegations, and was arrested. He was transported to Turner Gilford Knight Center. A student captured a photo of Alvarez walking through the school parking lot in handcuffs.

In a statement, the District said that they were made aware of a video on social media regarding Alvarez and launched an investigation. This investigation led to the firing and subsequent arrest of the teacher.

“Conduct such as the one he is accused of will not be tolerated. As such, his employment with the District is being terminated and we will ensure he is precluded from seeking future employment with M-DCPS,” said the statement.

School officials sharing a message with parents about Alvarez’s arrest. The principal wrote that “Alvarez, an employee of the school was recently arrested on grave charges regarding inappropriate conduct with a student.”

Parents at the school were shocked when they heard about Alvarez’s arrest.

“In shock, absolutely in shock. I don’t really know what happens to these teachers. I mean it just seems like after a certain amount of time their brain switches off and goes into another realm,” said Sisi Torre.

Students at the school said they aren’t surprised to learn that Alvarez was arrested.

Alvarez has since posted bond and was seen leaving TGK Tuesday night. He did not speak to 7News as he left the scene.

Miami-Dade Police, on Sunday, arrested 32-year-old Danielle Marie Lorini and her co-defendant 36-year-old Andrew Joseph Causa.

The two were charged with five counts of third-degree grand theft.

Lorini and Causa appeared in court, Monday.

Broward County Public Schools said it doesn’t have a record of her being a public school teacher. It is unclear where the woman teaches.

According to police, surveillance cameras captured the duo stealing merchandise totaling $20,186.70 from a Best Buy store, located at 7751 Bird Road.

The five instances of theft spanned from Sep. 2, 2023, to Jan. 28, where the two took around thousands worth of merchandise from the store’s shelves and left without paying.

On Sunday, a Best Buy employee caught the couple taking security tags off of items, stashing them, and then exiting the store without paying.

Both remain in jail.

Police: Woman who stole tequila bottle, pepper-sprayed clerk at North Miami Beach Walgreens arrested on unrelated charges https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/police-woman-who-stole-tequila-bottle-pepper-sprayed-clerk-at-north-miami-beach-walgreens-arrested-on-unrelated-charges/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 22:19:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1404956 Police have arrested a woman accused of stealing a bottle of tequila and pepper spraying a store clerk at a Walgreens in North Miami Beach.

The incident happened on Jan. 11 at the Walgreens store located at 791 NE 167th St.

Police identified the woman as 27-year-old Roneisha Sampson. She is currently in custody on unrelated charges.

According to North Miami Beach Police, the suspect walked in, stole the bottle of Don Julio and ran out of the store.

“Looks like a Black female that fled. Unknown direction of travel, wearing white shirt and gray pants, in a light gray Altima, unknown tag,” said a dispatcher over Broadcastify police scanner. “An employee was maced in the face.”

As the suspect fled the scene, she dropped her phone in the store.

About an hour later, detectives said, the woman realized she lost her phone and returned to retrieve it. The manager, who recognized her from the initial visit, said he didn’t have it. That’s when the suspect became enraged and pepper-sprayed the cashier on her way out of the store.

Children who were standing in the checkout line were also stung.

“Luckily, it was pepper spray, but I have seen shootings in the same area, same parking area here, so again, it happens, unfortunately,” said Robert Jimeno, a customer at Walgreens.

Store surveillance video shows the suspect inside the store doing the crime and then walking out.

The 31-year-old victim was left with burning eyes and asking why this happened to her.

“She was distraught. I did speak to her afterwards. She was shocked that it happened. She’s a really nice lady,” said Jimeno.

The victim was at work on Friday but went home early. She said she would love to tell her story but company policy won’t allow it.

Judge gives student accused of attacking teammate lesser charge; released on house arrest https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/judge-gives-student-accused-of-attacking-teammate-lesser-charge-released-on-house-arrest/ Thu, 25 Jan 2024 17:48:23 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1404443 A South Florida high school student accused of injuring his baseball teammate will be released from juvenile detention after a judge lowered his charge.

Jeremy Singer, who attends Miami Palmetto Senior High School, was originally arrested for aggravated battery with serious injury, but on Thursday, the judge granted him a lesser charge of battery.

“I do believe that there is probable cause for a felony battery,” said Judge Yery Marrero.

In the courtroom, Singer’s family and several of his friends were in attendance to support the young baseball player.

“My brothers, my friends and my family,” said Singer.

Singer was arrested on Tuesday during school hours after being accused of injuring a fellow teammate at Coral Reef Park during baseball practice.

Edward O’Donnell IV, Singer’s attorney, said the entire team was upset on Jan. 18, the day of the attack, because a student brought food to the field, which caused the entire team to run laps.

According to the arrest report, Singer meant to scare the victim, not hurt him, when he threw an air horn at him. The horseplay led to the victim needing six stitches as the air horn caused a laceration on his ear.

“Clearly Jeremy wasn’t trying to deny he did what he did. It’s just he clearly didn’t intend in any way to cause this sort of harm to him,” said O’Donnell.

In court Thursday, the judge heard the arguments from both sides.

“He threw a small object, from such a close range, so hard that the victim in this case needed six stitches,” said the prosecutor.

“He clearly never meant to cause those injuries, it was one throwing of one item,” said O’Donnell.

The mother of the teen who was injured, Nicolette Bory, was contacted after the hearing, but she did not answer phone calls from 7News. However, she posted photos of her son’s injury on her Instagram story and wrote, “Let’s show everyone what they didn’t show in court. This wasn’t an accident or nothing accidentally thrown his way. JEREMY SINGER DID THAT.”

The judge ordered Singer to remain on house arrest and to refrain from contacting the victim. He is set to appear in court again on Feb. 1.
