The security footage shows the moment when, detectives said, 23-year-old Jason Dyer-Mitchell opened fire inside the business located near Northwest 17th Avenue and 54th Street, just after 12:30 a.m., Saturday.

Lorenzo, who works security at the store, spoke with 7News hours later.

“The guy came in, and he started arguing with the owner,” he said.

The video shows Dyer-Mitchell and one of the victims going back and forth for a few seconds. What the altercation was about is unclear.

As one of the gas station owners begins to kick Dyer-Mitchell out of his store, the suspect is seen pulling out and gun and discharging it about nine times, striking both owners and a bystander who was shopping at the store.

“[The gunman] shot [one of the owners] two times and then shot him in the back after he turned around, four more times, and then he shot the other guy three times,” said Lorenzo.

Detectives identified the victims as 51-year-old Shahbaz Hussain and 42-year-old Shamun Shaukat. The owners, affectionately nicknamed “Sunny” and “Moon,” were pronounced dead at the scene.

“He wasn’t just a boss; he was a friend,” sad Lorenzo.

Investigators said the injured bystander managed to crawl out of the store, as strangers rushed to his aid before paramedics arrived and hoisted him into an ambulance.

Dyer-Mitchell appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer on Monday.

“You were arrested for two counts of second-degree murder with prejudice and two counts of second-degree murder with a weapon,” said Glazer.

This is not the suspect’s first run-in with the law. He was arrested in Miami Beach in January 2022 for assaulting a tourist with a nail. He faced charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and other offenses, including several drug charges.

How Dyer-Mitchell got a hold of the gun used in the gas station shooting remains unclear.

Lorenzo shared his grief and remorse for not being there to protect the owners during the shooting.

“I was supposed to have been there to protect them, but I wasn’t there at the time, and that makes me feel bad,” he said.

The Chevron station remains closed. Monday evening, 7News cameras captured Miami Police officers at the scene.

Dyer-Mitchell is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

‘I think I might have a crush on you’: Former Miami Senior High teacher arrested for alleged inappropriate communication with students https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/i-think-i-might-have-a-crush-on-you-miami-senior-high-school-teacher-arrested-for-alleged-inappropriate-communication-with-students/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 17:04:48 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1433059 A now former mathematics teacher at Miami Senior High School was arrested following allegations of engaging in inappropriate communication with two female students through social media.

The incidents began in October 2023, with 24-year-old Roger Alaniz allegedly initiating contact with the students.

Police said that one of the victims reported that Alaniz pressured her to give him her phone number and subsequently sent messages indicating romantic interest, causing her to feel uncomfortable.

According to the arrest report, Alaniz wrote his personal phone number on a paper the victim was working on, which she ignored.

The arrest report states Alaniz asked her numerous times, “Have you added me yet?” and “When are you going to text me?” The victim replied, “I’ll do it later.”

Alaniz then approached the victim with his phone and said, “Put your number,” the report states. The victim reportedly felt pressured and entered her phone number in his phone.

The arrest report states that Alaniz and the victim engaged in normal conversation at first, but then Alaniz messaged her, “I think I might have a crush on you. Is that weird?”

The victim reportedly told police that she felt uncomfortable and “purposely arrived late to class” or would “wait for friends to enter the class.”

Police said that the victim didn’t report it because “she didn’t want to give him the satisfaction that his comment affected her. However, she felt guilty about not reporting it because she could have stopped him from reaching out to other girls.”

Another victim reportedly recounted similar experiences, stating that Alaniz attempted to manipulate her by threatening her grades and asserting control over her academic future.

The arrest report states Alaniz requested to follow the victim on Instagram, which she accepted and asked him a question about an assignment. That’s when, according to the arrest report, Alaniz asked for her number and started to message her and they engaged in conversation about school and Alaniz gave her advice about personal problems with friends and boys.

The arrest report states that Alaniz asked “how far she sexually engaged with a boy” and “invited her to go out with him to watch a movie and drive her around town.”

When the victim began to ignore Alaniz, he told her “that her grades would be affected.”

The victim told Alaniz that she wanted a different teacher, and he told her “she would not be able to get out of his class, and if she did, he would find her,” the arrest report states. The victim reportedly told police she did not report the incident sooner because she feared Alaniz.

Miami-Dade Schools Police questioned Alaniz in December of 2023.

On Thursday, nearly five months later, he was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correction Center in West Miami-Dade.

Friday morning, Alaniz appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer.

The judge issued a stay-away order from the alleged victims.

His sister appeared in court over Zoom in tears.

7News received a statement by M-DCPS that reads in part:

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is profoundly troubled by the concerning allegations made against the former employee, leading to his arrest. Upon learning about this suspected behavior, he was immediately reassigned away from the school while Miami-Dade Schools Police conducted their investigation, and his employment with the District was subsequently terminated.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools

Alaniz is charged with two counts of offenses against students by authority figures and two counts of child abuse with no great bodily harm.

“The bond is $5,000 in counts three and four of the child of charge abuse. It will be $2,500 each count,” said Glazer.

M-DCPS announces partnership with BusPatrol to equip school buses with safety technology https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/m-dcps-announces-partnership-with-buspatrol-to-equip-school-buses-with-safety-technology/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 20:40:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1432838 Earlier this week, Miami-Dade County Public Schools announced a partnership with BusPatrol to launch a School Bus Safety Program with Miami-Dade Law Enforcement.

MDCPS announced on Tuesday that school buses in the district are now equipped with safety technology, including stop-arm enforcement cameras designed to detect and ticket vehicles that illegally pass stopped school buses.

https://twitter.com/MDCPS/status/1777759045845205448

BusPatrol released a video demonstrating how the technology works as the camera sensor detects movement on the left side of the bus and captures the license plate of anyone who does not stop and drives past a stopped school bus.

This safety initiative seeks to curb dangerous motorist behavior around school buses and make the journey to and from school safer for all student riders.

MDCPS partnered with BusPatrol to launch the program with Miami-Dade Police

According to the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS), school buses are unlawfully passed an estimated 43.5 million times each school year in the U.S.

7News captured multiple vehicles illegally passing school buses and failing to yield as student riders entered or exited the school bus on Thursday.

A statement from BusPatrol states that the new technology will “help to change this awful behavior and bring a new era of child safety to our roadways here in Miami-Dade.”

“There is nothing more important than the safety of our students. The statistics around child safety on our roads are truly disturbing. The reckless driving behavior recorded during the pilot for this program was shocking and terrifying. Drivers need to take School Bus Safety seriously and stop when they see a school bus deploy its stop arm. This program will help to change this awful behavior and bring a new era of child safety to our roadways here in Miami-Dade.”

BusPatrol

All school buses in the Miami-Dade district are equipped with the new cameras.

The 30-day warning period began on Monday, April 8, stating if you passed a school bus while the red lights were on or if the stop arm was displayed, the cameras would read your license plate and send you a warning in the mail.

The live ticketing begins on May 8. The first offense is a mail-written warning. The second offense is a $200 fine.

“This is about to take place and if you violate, unfortunately, you will receive a $200 fine,” said Luis Diaz, Chief Operating Officer of MDCPS. “This will unfortunately trigger some conversation, and unfortunately for those that violate and feel that they do not feel the need to obey the law, will unfortunately have to pay a financial fine.”

Diaz said this was a major step in favor of children’s security.

“This would be something that everyone should be doing every day that’s transporting in a car,” said Diaz.

This new partnership and law doesn’t come with legislative hurdles.

Senate Bill 766 was signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in May 2023 allowing the identification of school bus driving-related infractions. Since the legislature passed the bill, updates have been made that evolved around what to do with the revenue generated from ticketing people.

With a possible update to the law, it may change the target date for the live ticketing.

For now, Diaz said May 8 is the goal to start live ticketing.

“The community will know what is expected on May 8 so that is our goal and that’s basically our target. That’s game day for us,” said Diaz.

‘He wasn’t responding’: Family recalls moment toddler, who drowned in pool, was found at Margate home https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/he-wasnt-responding-family-recalls-moment-toddler-who-drowned-in-pool-was-found-at-margate-home/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 20:32:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1432424 A day after a toddler boy drowned at his family’s backyard pool in Margate, the boy’s grandfather is speaking out about the heartbreaking discovery.

The toddler was identified as Legend Love.

“He’s a sweet boy, nice friendly playful,” said Anthony Johnson, Legend’s grandfather.

Anthony spoke to 7News, Wednesday.

“I was sleeping, I didn’t see any screaming,” Anthony said.

The grandfather was home when his grandson drowned.

“When I ran out, the lady had the baby, the caregiver had the baby, and carried out the baby and she was crying, so I took the baby, tried to get inside and then laid him down on the table, then I called 911,” he said.

Anthony said he came home from work early because he wasn’t feeling well. When he got home, he laid down to get some rest.

He thought Legend was being watched by the family’s caretaker, who was the only other adult at the home.

“She thought the kid was with me in my room,” Anthony said. “That’s what she said. She thought he was me but he wasn’t with me. It looks like, I don’t know, she got distracted.”

Anthony said he didn’t hear Legend go into his room, which has access to the backyard pool.

“I didn’t hear nothing. The child already goes through the main door. He never got out,” he said. “For some reason, he go in my room and I don’t know how he opened that door but he opened and he got out.”

The grandfather would then wake up to tragedy.

“He wasn’t responding,” he said. “I pumped him like two times.”

Legend’s mother, Shakiera Johnson Love, could not bear the loss of her son.

7News cameras captured the screams of the heartbroken mother as she learned of the tragic news.

Love works at Broward Health Coral Springs and was at the hospital when her son was transported to the ER.

“She didn’t have any idea till, I think, she got a call that there was an emergency with the baby,” said Antonio Johnson, Legend’s uncle. “It was her actual child coming there.”

It remains unknown how Legend ended up in the pool or how long he was in there.

All day on Wednesday, family, friends, and neighbors shared their condolences and dropped off flowers to the family.

“You just have to be there with them all the time,” Anthony said. “It’s not just the pool, they can put stuff in their mouth, they can use stuff to harm themselves because they are active and that kid was active.”

A grandfather will now always remember his grandson as the light of his life and his family’s.

“He’s a nice kid, man. He makes himself happy,” he said. “He knows how to play by himself and make himself happy. It’s a big loss for me.”

7News cameras captured Love’s family putting balloons and flowers on the front lawn of their home.

“We all miss him right now,” said Anthony.

At least 97 children in Florida drowned last year, eight in Broward County. Leaving behind devasting families like Legend’s.

“I’ve never been through anything like this before,” said Antonio. “I wish it didn’t went like that and there was a different outcome.”

A GoFundMe was created by the family to help cover the funeral expenses. If you’d like to donate, click here.

62-year-old father shot in eye by water bead gun in Palmetto Bay pushes for subjects’ arrests https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/62-year-old-father-shot-in-eye-by-water-bead-gun-in-palmetto-bay-pushes-for-subjects-arrests/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 22:50:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1432028 PALMETTO BAY, Fla. (WSVN)– A 62-year-old father is demanding punishment for the children who shot a SplatRBall bead gun into his Palmetto Bay driveway, hitting him in the left eye.

Speaking with 7News on Tuesday, Dave Singer said the high school prank went terribly wrong.

“I couldn’t see out of my eye for two days. I mean, it was like staring at a white wall,” he said.

Since the shooting, Singer said, he’s had to visit the hospital every day to get his eye checked out.

“Three of the ophthalmologists who saw me said I’ll get my vision back, but eventually I’ll get glaucoma, and there’s a potential for me going blind in my left eye,” he said.

The incident occurred Friday night at Singer’s home located on the 8300 block of Southwest 154th Terrace.

Ring video provided to 7News by Singer shows his son and some friends arriving home when a car passes by and sprays the home with the water pellets.

At first, the shooter misses, and the car drives off. Singer reached into his car to get his wallet and begins talking to his son.

“My son said ‘Hey, they are coming back again. That’s the car,'” said Singer.

Moments later, the car drives by again and fires the water pellet gun in all directions, with one of them hitting Singer in the eye.

“Someone call the cops,” Singer is heard saying on the Ring video.

After being hit, Singer falls to the ground.

“It could have taken my eye out, because the doctor said, ‘You have no idea how serious this injury is. You could have lost your eye,'” said Singer.

The water-based gel bullets don’t usually cause much bodily harm, unless they hit someone directly in a sensitive area, like the eye.

Now Singer wants the water pellet shooters to be held accountable. He believes investigators know who is behind the drive by.

“Kids make mistakes, right? So I don’t want to ruin the kids’ lives, but it’s more upsetting to me, literally right now, that the police are not, the Palmetto Bay Police are not being more thorough with in their investigation and the kids haven’t been arrested,” said Singer.

Miami-Dade Police, who are contracted to police the Village of Palmetto Bay, said they have not arrested anyone in this incident because they cannot prove probable cause.

Police told 7News they cannot prove that the kids who shot the SplatRBall gun intended to seriously hurt Singer or anyone on the property.

“They shouldn’t have these kids five days later walking the street after they did a drive by, that’s basically what they did. They did a drive by with a pellet gun,” said Singer.

Singer, a former council member in Palmetto Bay, is the father of Jeremy Singer, the 16-year-old teen who was arrested in January after beating up a 15-year-old following baseball practice.

According to the police report, Jeremy said he tested his arm strength by throwing an air horn at the victim in an attempt to scare him, which accidentally struck his ear.

Singer said that while he is trying to keep a positive attitude about what happened on Friday night, he believes the kids who accidentally shot him should be arrested, just like his son was.

“These kids, basically, shot my eye out, OK? And the police department wants to charge them with a misdemeanor, which is absolutely crazy in my book,” he said. “So, it seems like they have different set of laws for my kids compared to other kids in the neighborhood.”

Singer said he disagrees with the MDPD because he believes that probable cause was established when the kids inside the car attacked his home twice.

FIU, Zoo Miami, local schools host solar eclipse viewing events https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/fiu-zoo-miami-local-schools-host-solar-eclipse-viewing-events/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 21:46:08 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1431696 As the moon passed between the Earth and the sun, hundreds of people filled the lawn at Florida International University, Zoo Miami and several South Florida schools to take advantage of the opportunity to view the partial solar eclipse.

Students and staff at FIU filled the lawn of their school on Monday afternoon, as they took turns peeking through the two telescopes provided by the school or looked at the eclipse through their safety glasses.

“I am so excited for this,” said FIU student Michelle Nassimos. “I’m glad that FIU is doing like a free public viewing.”

The next time students and staff will get to experience a natural phenomenal like this will be in 20 years.

“It’s crazy. Who knows, you know, if we’re going to be, you know, alive in another 20 years, so, gotta experience it today,” said Nassimos.

For other curious students wanting to see the eclipse, the experience was very new.

“It feels like something out of a movie, like, I’ve never seen one before, and it looks really cool how you can see the shadow of the moon on the sun,” said Laly, another FIU student.

“I’ve never got to see this event before, and it’s, for me, it’s fascinating,” said Amelie Perez.

“I’m so excited, I love stuff like this,” said FIU student Acayah Brand. “Just seeing it, and having the telescope and the glasses provided for us, it makes me really happy, ’cause I like the solar stuff and, like, the space things.”

A Ph.D. student at FIU told 7News that the school saw 46% of the moon covering the sun.

Dr. James Webb, a professor at FIU, helped set up the viewing party. He said he is glad to hear the students’ feedback.

“Actually, nature sets us up. I’m just capitalizing what nature is doing,” said Webb.

Webb hopes this scientific event will seep into student’s minds.

“I like people to show that, if we can predict eclipses hundreds of years in advance, maybe they’ll take science and other things seriously, like global warming,” he said.

Interest in the science is peaking, as 7News cameras captured people gathering on the school’s lawn to witness the event.

“If we didn’t have this, I don’t think anyone probably would have cared as much to see it,” said Brand.

“I think it brings a lot of people together,” said Lely. “Normally this place is so empty, but it’s packed right now, and everyone’s just here to see it.”

Meantime, children at Zoo Miami went wild over the eclipse, as the local zoo hosted a viewing party at its plaza.

Guests at the zoo were able to use telescopes, grab some safety glasses and learn about the partial solar eclipse, thanks to the Southern Cross Astronomical Society of Miami.

Several children described what they saw and felt during the event.

When asked whether she was feeling excited, a girl replied, “Yeah. It’s a memory that we will never forget, and it’s a beautiful moment.”

“It looks orange, and there’s, like, a little piece taken off,” said Lily.

“It’s kind of like a cookie that’s been bitten, like a chip off,” said a boy.

“It’s like a circle, and it’s half cut,” said Rachel.

“I don’t see anything,” said a second boy. “Oh, I see it.”

When asked whether this was the best day of your life, a fourth girl said, “Yeah.”

7News cameras captured another eclipse watcher trying to put her phone up to her glasses to capture the moment.

Another big concern at Zoo Miami was how the animals were going to react to the partial eclipse. Following the partial eclipse, the animals barely reacted.

At schools throughout Miami-Dade and Broward, students came ready with an extra school supply: eclipse sunglasses.

The solar eclipse brought a perfect opportunity for students at three South Florida schools to bring a lesson to life.

Magnet students at Terra Environmental Institute prepared for citizenry science as they crowdsourced information for scientists.

“Any scientists that are working on trying to identify animal behavior during the eclipse, due to a biotic factor, can actually, hopefully, have more data and more information on it,” said Lissette Perez-Munoz, a teacher at Terra.

7News cameras captured Terra students looking up at the sky with their sunglasses on as the eclipse took over the South Florida sky. Others used their own imagination to protect their eyes.

“I know I’m supposed to use a solar filter, but I didn’t have the resources available, so I improvised with a photo filter I bought online and some tape,” said Isaac Litan, a student at Terra.

Over in Pompano Beach, science teacher Dianne Paillet’s class at Crystal Lake Middle School went through a play-by-play of the solar eclipse.

“It’s very cool, and basically we’re seeing, every single time a cloud goes over it, it gets smaller and brighter,” said one student.

“To be able to see it, live, it brings it out of the classroom and into real life,” said Paillet.

At Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in West Miami-Dade, the astronomy club enjoyed the eclipse to its full potential, as they used the paper sunglasses and state-of-the-art equipment to mark the moment.

A senior at the school described what he saw.

“Last time it came around, I was in sixth grade, but I did not have the opportunity to see it, so this is actually my first eclipse,” said Anthony Turbe, a senior at the school.

Other students said the eclipse provides scientists an opportunity to learn more about the universe.

“As much as a spectacle as it is, and as cool and interesting as it may look, it’s also a fantastic opportunity for scientists to make really important observations about the universe and the laws of physics as we understand them,” said Gaston Lacayo, a student at Terra.

Officials at Belen said their students have the technology to take their experience to the next level. They said they are the only school in the country that has a 16-inch telescope that is equipped to take quality snaps of the celestial sight.

They are also one of a handful of high schools in Florida that has an observatory.

“The observatory gets used a lot and often so that we can really expose the kids, especially, to these incredible things,” said Father Guillermo García-Tuñón, Belen’s president.

The solar eclipse was a great way to start the school week off on a high note.

Up north in Broward, at Markham Park, people were able to take a peep through a telescope to get a safe view of the moon passing between the Earth and the sun.

“It’s a once-in-a-generation experience that this is just very fascinating,” said Steven Luxenberg, president of the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association.

7News cameras captured Broward residents of all ages coming together to see the amazing phenomenon.

In Fort Lauderdale, the Riverwalk was packed with people wearing eclipse glasses.

After witnessing the event on the campus lawn and the zoo plaza, the students and children are now a little more prepared for the next one when it comes again in 20 years.

House destroyed after fire ignites on Parkland property; investigation underway https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/house-destroyed-after-fire-ignites-on-parkland-property-investigation-underway/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 10:38:09 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1430819 Firefighters battled a house blaze that broke out early Friday morning in Parkland, leaving behind nothing but ash and charred concrete structures that once belonged to the home.

The fire started round 3:30 a.m. in the area of Godfrey Road and Wiles Road. Crews were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they worked to contain the blaze.

Officials said the the two-story home was under renovation when someone saw smoke coming from inside. The second floor reportedly collapsed while firefighters were extinguishing the flames.

“We encountered heavy flames from the roof through the second story,” said Coral Springs/Parkland Fire Department Capt. Richard Antonini. “Portions of the house were collapsing at they arrived.”

Coral Springs and Parkland responded to the scene in less than five minutes from the first 911 call.

“They put down about 2,000 feet of fire hose,” Antonini said.

Video from 7Skyforce showed the aftermath of the house, represented as piles of ash and rubble, and the remaining property that seems to be unaffected by the blaze. All that was left on the Parkland property was a tennis court and an outdoor structure likening a barn.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

“I’m just glad everybody’s OK and I’d like to know what caused it just to make sure it doesn’t happen to any of our houses,” said Tom Harrah, a neighbor.

The Fire Marshal is on the scene and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Car plunges into canal in West Miami-Dade; 2 inside escape sinking vehicle through sunroof https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/car-plunges-into-canal-in-west-miami-dade-2-inside-escape-sinking-vehicle-through-sunroof/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 01:59:49 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1430353 Two people escaped from a sinking car after an attempt to avoid hitting another vehicle in West Miami-Dade sent them into a canal.

Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue responded to the scene of the crash in the area of Coral Way and Southwest 117th Avenue around 7:45 p.m., Wednesday.

“Ladder 29 responding Coral Way, Southwest 117th Avenue, reference a vehicle in the canal,” a dispatcher said in radio transmissions.

According to MDPD, everyone inside the four-door Lexus that went into Snapper Creek got out.

“We do have a vehicle in the canal. Reportedly everyone is out of the vehicle,” said the dispatcher.

The occupants of the car, who are 18 and 19 years old, said the other car made a U-turn in front of them while they were driving southbound. They swerved their car to get out of the way and went into the canal.

One of the occupants, Eric Hernandez, spoke with 7News.

“I’m safe and alive,” he said.

Hernandez said he and his friend were returning home from getting some food and were heading southbound when the crash occurred.

“We tried, like, swerve and brake, but we couldn’t, and since he was making a U-turn, we, like, it made us go to the rail, and it broke, and we went to the water,” he said.

The teen explained how he and his friend escaped the sinking vehicle.

“In the water, all the glass started, like, cracking, and we tried opening the door, and the door didn’t open, so we went out through the sunroof,” said Hernandez.

7News cameras captured the damaged car along the canal and some damage to the guardrail. The two teens were seen wrapped in aluminum blankets.

“[The car] floated all the way down this way, due to the wind — as you can see, how it’s really windy — and it finally sank over here,” said Ivan Grau of Sunshine Towing.

After escaping, the boys swam to the shore, where Grau helped them out, and they were able to call their parents.

7News cameras captured the teens as they tried to salvage belongings in the car.

Southwest 117th Avenue was temporarily shut down near the scene of the crash, but it has since reopened to traffic.

It remains unclear whether or not the driver of the other car will be cited.

‘Spot,’ the robotic police dog, helps MDPD during hours-long standoff of barricaded man in NE Miami-Dade   https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/spot-the-robotic-police-dog-helps-mdpd-during-hours-long-standoff-of-barricaded-man-in-ne-miami-dade/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 20:12:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1429689 Following an hours-long standoff on Tuesday between law enforcement and a barricaded man who was armed in Northeast Miami-Dade, officers had an unlikely ally that came to their aid.

Miami-Dade Police were assisted by Spot, a robotic addition that was introduced to the department in 2023. Spot is used by the Special Response Team for special situations.

The department explained how Spot is utilized in a video posted to social media.

“Spot will be utilized on all barricaded subjects, and hostage rescue incidents where there is a value in introducing technology to gain valuable information rather than placing officers in harms way.”

In exclusive video captured by 7News, Spot was able to clear a path for the Special Response Team during Tuesday’s barricade.

It allowed officers to approach a vehicle safely to get the get 27-year old Darnell Paul into handcuffs.

Spot’s abilities range from relatively simple movements.

“Opening doors, retrieving objects, climbing stairs, and offering visual feedback to the operator,” said MDPD Lt. Francis Rego.

The robotic dog also allows officers to speak through it.

After the takedown, Miami-Dade Police spoke about how cutting-edge Spot is.

“It is a tool of the Special Response Team, they have had other robots in their inventory but this is just state-of-the-art technology,” said Edgardo Caneva, Assistant Director of Public Safety and Emergency Response Services.

But this isn’t the first time robotics have been used in the country’s police force.

“They’re a great tool,” said Caneva. “They offer us opportunities to go upstairs, open doors, pick up objects automatically, in this case with the Boston Dynamics robot.”

Massachusetts State Police have their own robotic dog called Roscoe, which was provided by robotics company Boston Dynamics.

The team used Roscoe during a standoff that came under fire when an armed suspect shot it with a rifle.

“He was shot three times. Once in the hands of the gripper, once in the elbow, and one to the body,” said Massachusetts State Police Trooper John Ragosa.

These type of robotic tools allow teams all over the country to diffuse the most critical and sensitive of situations, which allows human and dogs alike to stay out of potentially dangerous operations.

“In this case a robotic dog went down there first and took the rounds that could of been meant for somebody else,” said Ragosa.

‘The world never forgets’: 3 Nova Music Festival massacre survivors share their stories at UM https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/the-world-never-forgets-3-nova-music-festival-massacre-survivors-share-their-stories-at-um/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 03:12:10 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1429441 A group of survivors made a South Florida stop to share their stories of how they escaped the Hamas terrorist attack at an Israeli music festival.

The three survivors — Shye K. Weinstein, Kapah Dor and Or Elmakias — were invited on behalf of ISRAEL-is and the Seed the Dream Foundation’s “Survive to Tell” tour to share their heroic stories at the University of Miami on Monday.

“We hear everything that happen: the gunfire, the screaming, the chaos,” said Weinstein. “From that point on, we’re running, we’re escaping, we’re running for our lives.”

Hamas’ surprise attack at the music festival occurred on Oct. 7, on the Gaza Strip.

Authorities said 364 people were killed, at least 40 hostages were taken, and many more wounded at the Supernova Socket Gathering, a celebration called the Nova Music Festival.

The festival massacre was one of the first surprise attacks from Hamas on Israel.

“There were so many good people, and happy and joyful people, who just wanted to dance and enjoy music,” said Elmakias.

Dor, an Israel Defense Forces soldier and survivor, said he managed to escape from the terrorist attack and save seven people.

“I lost everything, I died on that day,” said Dor. “I lost my job, I lost my home, I lost my dogs, I lost the relationship I had.”

Elmakias, 27, was shot in the leg. She shared her courageous story of how she had to limp through fields on her own to survive.

“This is our story; it’s not just me or a personal story,” she said. “It’s about all of us, all the Jews, all the Israelis.”

Weinstein, a photographer at the festival, documented the horrors of the terrorist attack.

“We’re still seeing bodies, we’re seeing cars that are crashed, cars that are abandoned, cars that are riddled with bullets,” he said.

According to reports, 44 people have been taken by Hamas and remain missing.

Family: Man killed in police-involved shooting in Homestead says he was shot while trying to go inside home, died in his bedroom https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/family-man-killed-in-police-involved-shooting-in-homestead-says-he-was-shot-while-trying-to-go-inside-home-died-in-his-bedroom/ Mon, 01 Apr 2024 20:54:05 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1429322 The family of the man who was shot and killed in Homestead in a police-involved shooting said he was trying to run away from police and back inside of his own home when he was shot.

Thirty-one-year-old Leandro Ledea Chong was fatally shot by Homestead Police officers inside his home, located along Sunrise Boulevard, Saturday morning.

7News cameras on Monday captured the front of the house riddled with bullet holes and dried blood, showing the aftermath of the shooting.

Chong’s ex-girlfriend spoke to 7News on Sunday about the incident through a translator.

“When I got there, I started screaming that they had killed him,” said Cabrera.

Cabrera said she dated and lived with Ledea Chong for two years. After their separation, she said, she still took care of him, living just two homes away.

Cabrera claims her ex-boyfriend should have never been killed because he was mentally ill.

“I showed Homestead Police his mental health papers when they had arrived,” she said.

On Friday, video posted on social media by Homestead Social shows Ledea Chong being surrounded by Homestead Police officers.

However, they decided to disengage because, investigators said, he was not a threat at the time.

But on Saturday, police said, they were forced to fire their weapons because they believed him to be a threat.

“An incident did occur with the officers where the officers were forced to fire their firearms,” said Homestead Police Capt. Fernando Morales.

His family said police first shot him outside the home and then they shot him again as he ran back inside. They said officers shot and killed him in his bedroom.

Police have not confirmed whether or not Ledea Chong was armed at the time of the incident.

But according to a GoFundMe set up by the family to cover funeral costs, Ledea Chong had a fanny pack filled with keys, a rehab brochure and a screwdriver.

It remains unclear whether or not Ledea Chong was holding the screwdriver in his hand at the time of the shooting, but Cabrera said the police were aware that he was ill.

“It was the same cops that came in the morning and at night,” she said.

Cabrera also said she had called a crisis health center to come help her ex-boyfriend.

“In the end, they had just sent police for this ending,” she said.

Officials with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said their investigation is active and ongoing, so they cannot do an interview with 7News.

Police: 64-year-old man pocketed over $100K after pretending to be licensed contractor for multiple roof repairs https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/police-64-year-old-man-pocketed-over-100k-after-pretending-to-be-licensed-contractor-for-multiple-roof-repairs/ Fri, 29 Mar 2024 20:31:25 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1428635 A Miami man has been arrested after, police said, he pretended to be a licensed contractor and defrauded 13 victims across Miami-Dade County.

According to detectives, a collaborative investigation between the Miami-Dade, Key Biscayne and Hallandale Beach police departments revealed that since August 2019, John Louis McQueen defrauded numerous people by offering to build new roofs without a license, as required by Florida law.

“This investigation was initiated in August of 2020,” said Miami-Dade Police Department Detective Geordi Estepan.

Police said McQueen, 64, fraudulently utilized the credentials of legitimate contractors on fake receipts and contracts across the county.

After a thorough investigation, and with the assistance of the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, an arrest warrant was issued for McQueen, who was located in Hallandale Beach and arrested on Wednesday.

He faces various charges, including grand theft, organized scheme to defraud and contracting without a license.

During the investigation, a total of 13 victims were identified. Detectives said they suffered a total loss of approximately $103,000.

One of those victims is a Miami Gardens couple who met McQueen after Hurricane Irma damaged their roof.

“I am so hurt because I trust people,” said Victoria Jackson.

Jackson said that she trusted McQueen after he told her he was a contractor.

“I gave him $7,795,” said Victoria Jackson.

She signed the paperwork he gave her, saying that he had the right permits and would begin work on fixing her roof.

“No work was done. I gave him the check, he cashed it the same day,” said Jackson.

Jackson said McQueen betrayed her trust and took her hard-earned money.

“And on the day that he was scheduled to come out to do the work, nobody showed up,” Jackson said. “I called him, I called him, he didn’t answer, he didn’t answer.”

McQueen appeared in bond court on Thursday.

“Count one, organized scheme to defraud, it’s a $50,000 bond. I’m setting the amounts on the warrant,” said Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Mindy S. Glazer.

Detectives are looking for additional victims who may have been affected by McQueen’s tactics.

There is no indication as to whether any of the victims will ever get their money back.

MIA’s Skytrain back on track after extensive repairs https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/mias-skytrain-back-on-track-after-extensive-repairs/ Fri, 29 Mar 2024 11:32:22 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1428483 Miami International Airport has partially reactivated its Concourse D Skytrain service, which has been out of operation for six months due to necessary structural repairs.

On Friday, three of the Skytrain’s four stations resumed service, enabling smoother transitions for travelers going through the concourse.

The Skytrain stopped its operations in September after inspections revealed cracks under the track. Repair crews have since made enough progress to resume trips for most of the mile-long track.

“I am thrilled that most of our Concourse D Skytrain will soon be operational again,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who oversees MIA, in a news release. “Our unwavering commitment to passenger and employee safety prompted the temporary suspension of Skytrain services last September. With the impending reopening, travelers can expect seamless access to most Concourse D gates in just minutes.”

The repairs have reactivated stations 2, 3 and 4, covering gates D20 to D60. Station 1 will rejoin the network by the summer, costing a total of $4.2 million.

Since the closure of the Skytrain, American Airlines and MIA have offered golf-cart shuttles and bus rides for passengers who need to maneuver through the airport.

This Skytrain restoration comes amidst a broader airport modernization effort, with Miami-Dade County pouring a monumental $7 billion into capital improvements and $1.7 billion into maintenance upgrades.

The Modernization in Action Plan is set to revamp all 616 of MIA’s elevators, escalators and walkways, among other critical infrastructure updates. Already, strides have been made, with a focus on enhancing passenger boarding bridges and modernizing public restrooms.

Last month saw the launch of the “I AM MIA” campaign, an initiative toward enhancing customer service. This initiative deploys Lightning Crew teams throughout the terminal, tasked with quickly addressing maintenance needs and assisting passengers, further cementing MIA’s commitment to a premier travel experience.

As America’s primary gateway for international freight and a major hub for international passengers, particularly to Latin America and the Caribbean, MIA’s upgrades are vital to its continued role in supporting the economic vitality of Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida.

With an annual contribution of $31.9 billion in business revenue and attracting around 60% of Florida’s international visitors, the airport’s modernization efforts are crucial for sustaining its economic impact and improving the overall passenger experience.

As MIA gears up for a future of growth and enhanced service, the partial return of the Skytrain is a welcome development for travelers and a sign of more improvements to come.

TMZ: Feds subpoena flight charter companies used by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs amid probe https://wsvn.com/entertainment/tmz-feds-subpoena-flight-charter-companies-used-by-sean-diddy-combs-amid-probe/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 20:48:19 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1428248 After raiding the homes of Sean “Diddy” Combs, federal officials conducting a sex trafficking investigation are now focusing on flights taken by the actor and rap mogul.

As federal investigators put together a road map, the thing they are after now is a flight map. and that’s why every charter company Combs used is receiving a federal subpoena, TMZ reported Thursday.

Thus, the investigation into allegations that Combs engaged in sex trafficking might come down to charter jets and figuring out who was on them, as they went from state to state and around the world.

Federal law enforcement sources have told TMZ that all of the jet charter companies Combs used will receive subpoenas.

In addition, TMZ reported, the Feds want to look at all of the flight manifests, which could be critical, especially if some of the people who filed recent civil lawsuits against Combs were on board these planes.

This would enable federal agents to contact the passengers and interview them. Anyone who flew with Combs, including his celebrity friends, could be contacted by officials conducting a probe out of New York tied to allegations of sex trafficking.

This latest development comes a day after 7Skyforce hovered above Combs’ sleek private jet, once again parked at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, where he was met by Homeland Security Investigations agents prior to a planned family trip that never happened.

The aircraft had been at Antigua earlier in the week, following a trying three days for the mogul, who remains under the legal microscope.

Video provided by TMZ shows trashed rooms at Combs’ Los Angeles home. The footage shows deconstructed computers, ransacked desks, and open cabinets and desk drawers. Federal authorities even burrowed through the star’s bathroom.

It was the result of the Homeland Security Investigations’ raid on Monday, which went down as another raid happened at Combs’ South Florida property on Star Island.

7News cameras captured the surprise federal visit on Star Island from the ground and air.

Meanwhile, bodycam video from Miami-Dade Police obtained by 7News shows Brendan Paul, Combs’ alleged drug mule and a former Syracuse basketball player, being led away from the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport in handcuffs, Monday.

Paul was arrested on two separate charges.

Combs has not been charged with a crime. He and his legal team have denied all wrongdoing. His attorney, Aaron Dyer, released a statement describing the raids as a “gross overuse of military-level force.”

As of Thursday night, Combs’ whereabouts are unknown.

Miramar Police Department provides food, presents to family mourning loss of Navy sailor https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/miramar-police-department-provides-food-presents-to-family-mourning-loss-of-navy-sailor/ Wed, 27 Mar 2024 21:34:18 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427816 The Miramar Police Department is lending a hand to the family of a U.S. Navy sailor from South Florida who died while on a tour of duty.

The department on Wednesday provided the family with presents, food and a shoulder to cry on as they mourn the death of Michael Aregbesola.

Aregbesola, from Miramar, died on March 20 as a result of an incident. He was 34.

The U.S Department of Defense said his death was a non-combat incident.

7News cameras captured his family, one week after learning of Aregbesola’s death, ahead of the Easter weekend.

“He really loved his son,” said Deanna Aregbesola, the sailor’s widow. “Thank you so much. Thank you for coming out.”

Aregbesola moved from Nigeria to the U.S. in 2017. At the age of 30, he decided to enlist in the Navy. He was deployed to the USS Mason, which has been operating in the U.S. Fifth Fleet in the Red Sea since November 2023.

His widow describing the kind of man Aregbesola was.

“He was a very selfless man. That’s all I’m going to say,” said Deanna.

His other family members were left devastated.

“It really hurts. I’m shaken and I’m broken to the core knowing that he’s lost and they cannot find his body,” said Michael McGhi, the sailor’s father-in-law.

With the delivery from the Miramar Police Department, the family can begin picking up the pieces, one step at a time.

“Thank you for your support,” said Aregbesola’s 4-year-old son, Michael Aregbesola Jr.

The Pentagon said an investigation has been opened into Aregbesola’s death.

His family hopes the investigation moves as quickly as possible.

‘Ending the squatter scam’: DeSantis signs new bill expanding protections for homeowners dealing with squatters https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/ending-the-squatter-scam-desantis-signs-new-bill-expanding-protections-for-homeowners-dealing-with-squatters/ Wed, 27 Mar 2024 20:28:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427796 Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a new bill into law to give homeowners more power when dealing with squatters.

Squatting is defined as people moving into or onto another person’s property without permission.

“You assume in America, if you purchase a home and own a residence, that’s your residence,” said DeSantis.

People may think that to get the squatter out of the home, just call police. But it can be a lot trickier than that.

“We are, in the State of Florida, ending the squatter scam,” said DeSantis.

Prior to this bill being signed into law, squatters were considered to be tenants, and there is a process to evicting these tenants.

Under the new law, signed by the governor in Orlando on Wednesday, a property owner can request law enforcement to immediately remove a squatter from their property if the following conditions are met:

  • The individual has unlawfully entered and remains on the property.
  • The individual has been directed to leave the property by the owner but has not done so.
  • The individual is not a current or former tenant in a legal dispute.

The new law also increases penalties for those engaging, encouraging or teaching others ways to be squatters. These penalties include:

  • A first-degree misdemeanor for making a false statement in writing to obtain real property or for knowingly and willfully presenting a falsified document conveying property rights.
  • A second-degree felony for any person who unlawfully occupies or trespasses in a residential dwelling and who intentionally causes $1,000 or more in damages.
  • A first-degree felony for knowingly advertising the sale or rent of a residential property without legal authority or ownership.

Squatting is not foreign to South Florida, as it has seen its own fair share of incidents.

“They just come in, they break in, and this is their home,” said Natasha Johnson, who said squatters took over her property.

Back in 2021, 7Investigates spoke to Johnson, who at the time was expecting to inherit a duplex from her father. However, when she arrived to renovate the property in hopes of renting it out, she found squatters had taken over the home.

“The city didn’t have my back. The governor didn’t have my back,” said Johnson. “I was depressed, headaches all the time, constantly thinking about what am I going to do.”

She said it took eight years to kick the squatters out.

“The officers, they wouldn’t do anything. They told me, I mean I told, they saw the squatters in the house,” said Johnson. “They told me I couldn’t even go inside the house to talk to them.”

By that time, Johnson said, the squatters had already made themselves at home.

“They moved in a refrigerator, a stove,” said Johnson. “Supposedly they put some tile down. They’re turning on the water, they’re turning on the lights. I’ve called down there, to the water company, because they’re now sending me bills.”

Johnson said the law came too late.

“Should’ve have that a long time ago. Now, I’m stuck with damages,” she said.

Johnson said the new law would’ve saved her an unimaginable amount of stress after she lost thousands of dollars in unpaid rent and damages. She said she wishes there was a program homeowners like her could enroll in to recoup some of the money she lost.

The law will help homeowners like Johnson get back what is rightfully theirs more quickly.

“You’re not going to be able to commandeer someone’s private property,” said DeSantis.

The law is set to go into effect on July 1.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ alleged drug mule arrested in Opa-locka https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/sean-diddy-combs-alleged-drug-mule-arrested-in-opa-locka/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 20:00:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427403 Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs’ dilemma continued Tuesday after a 25-year-old man, alleged to be Combs’ drug mule, was arrested in Opa-locka.

The suspect, Brendan Paul, was described in a recent lawsuit and was arrested on Monday.

He was charged with one count of possession of suspected cocaine and another of possession of suspected marijuana candy after federal agents intercepted Combs’ plane at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.

This was also the last place Combs was seen in public since after the music mogul’s Star Island home in Miami Beach and his Los Angeles home were raided on Monday by federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations.

The searches were connected to an investigation by federal authorities in New York as part of a sex trafficking probe.

A Los Angeles resident and Combs’ neighbor weighed in on what he’s been seeing next door in recent months.

“I’ve seen black suburbans, Uber drivers, private drivers between 1-3 a.m., Ryan Mendelsohn said. “Sometimes earlier, sometimes later, but I’ve seen girls get out of the car in swimsuits, swimwear and bathing suits sometimes.”

According to TMZ, they reported that Combs’ private jet was spotted in Antigua Monday night.

All these events stemming after several sexual assault lawsuits were filed against Combs in recent months.

Combs’ former protege and girlfriend, R&B singer Cassie Ventura, sued him last year, alleging years of sex abuse and rape.

“Hopefully, this is the beginning of a process that will hold Mr. Combs responsible for his depraved conduct,” said the lawyer for Cassie and Jane Doe.

In February, producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones, who was seen working out beside Combs, filed a lawsuit against the star claiming that Combs, his staff, and music executives knew about and were involved in illicit and unwanted sexual activities in Florida, New York, California and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

7News cameras on Tuesday captured activity at Combs’ Star Island home, where some house personnel were leaving the property and black SUVs were seen going in and out of the property as they dropped off, or possibly, picked up people in the home.

TMZ released footage taken from inside of Combs’ California mansion showing the aftermath of the raid. Deconstructed computers, messy, ransacked desks, furniture, cabinets, and open safes and drawers can be seen in the video as Homeland Security officials carried out their investigation.

“They had to present a probable cause statement before a magistrate judge, they had to produce some evidence that they were going to find evidence of criminal activity in his home,” said Attorney Areva Martin.

Combs’ attorney released a public statement for the first time on Tuesday stating the raids of his homes were “excessive” use of “military-level” force.

“Yesterday, there was a gross overuse of military-level force as search warrants were executed at Mr. Combs’ residences. There is no excuse for the excessive show of force and hostility exhibited by authorities or the way his children and employees were treated. Mr. Combs was never detained but spoke to and cooperated with authorities. Despite media speculation, neither Mr. Combs nor any of his family members have been arrested nor has their ability to travel been restricted in any way. This unprecedented ambush — paired with an advanced, coordinated media presence — leads to a premature rush to judgment of Mr. Combs and is nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits. There has been no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations. Mr. Combs is innocent and will continue to fight every single day to clear his name.”

Aaron Dyer, Diddy’s attorney

Sons Justin Dior Combs, 30, and King Combs, 25, were seen handcuffed outside their father’s Los Angeles mansion during Monday’s raid.

Currently, Combs has private security guarding his Star Island home that belongs to his security personnel.

Combs has not been charged with a crime and has not spoken out publicly addressing the investigation.

More Americans flee Haiti to Miami as gang violence increases, evacuees urging US to intervene https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/more-americans-flee-haiti-as-gang-violence-increases-evacuees-urging-us-to-intervene/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 21:12:40 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1427048 Demands for U.S. support are amplifying as more than 30,000 people have fled Haiti as the turmoil and unrest consumes the country.

Sara Heimcke and her family are one of 30,000 citizens who have flown out of the country. Her 12-year-old son, Joseph, was forced to face terrifying sounds every night.

“I always hear gunshots,” said Joseph.

“Are you excited to be here? Do you feel relieved?” asked 7News’ Reporter Michael Hudak.

“Yes. Yes,” said Joseph.

7News Michael Hudak asked Sara how would she describe her life, she feels torn.

“Ha… describe my life? Psh. I don’t know,” said Sara. “There’s nothing to say. There’s nothing particular to say except that we’re kind of torn apart.”

The latest round of evacuees landed in Miami International Airport Monday afternoon using commercial flights through Sunrise Airlines, which is a Haitian airline that announced new direct flights from the country’s second-largest city Cap Haitien.

The flights come as more armed gangs continue to terrorize the population and attack police stations, and other government facilities in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, where they have also seized control of the airport.

“Thank God that we can make it for today,” said an evacuee who flew from Haiti to Miami.

“We really want a better situation for the young kids, and give them a chance to dream because a lot of kids want to go back to school, and they can’t go back to school,” said an evacuee who flew from Haiti to Miami.

Dozens of people have been killed and tens of thousands have been left homeless since the gang attacks began on Feb. 29th. The gangs also stormed Haiti’s two biggest prisons and released more than 4,000 inmates.

Earlier in the week, a U.S. government-chartered flight evacuated more than 80 U.S. citizens from Haiti and brought them to Miami International Airport. People who arrived in Miami on Monday are calling for the U.S. to intervene.

“We are left aside,” said Carline Allen, who flew from Haiti to Miami. “We are left behind. And we see the way that the Americans, they handle other issues.”

Allen tells 7News that sending American troops might not be the answer but says American intervention is the only solution.

The average cost for a one-way direct flight from Haiti to the United States is currently around $1,000.

Police: South Florida school janitor arrested after paying student $5 to perform sexual act https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/police-south-florida-school-janitor-arrested-after-paying-student-5-to-perform-sexual-act/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 19:18:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425690 A now former janitor at a Northwest Miami-Dade private school was arrested after he allegedly paid a 12-year-old student $5 to perform a sexual act.

Miami-Dade Police said 33-year-old Jermaine Garret-Hudson worked at Sheyes of Miami Learning Centers & Elementary School, located at 3038 NW 48th Terrace in the Brownsvilled neighborhood.

Detectives said the victim told them that the suspect approached him in December of 2023 and offered to pay him $5 in exchange for oral sex.

Attorney Stephanie Ducheine-Welsh, who is representing the victim’s family, told 7News that Garret-Hudson had made sexual advances to the boy several times before.

“[The victim’s mother] was told by her child that since last year, there was a janitor that was exposing himself, exposing his genital areas to him at least on two different occasions” she said.

Detectives said the victim performed the sexual act on Garret-Hudson and they went their separate ways.

The student’s mother reported the incident to police in late February. She spoke with 7News on Friday.

“I went to go pick my kids up from school. When my daughter got in the car, she told me that she heard rumors about my son performing a sexual act with the school janitor,” she said.

Garret-Hudson was arrested on Tuesday.

The boy’s mother, who asked not to be identified or show her face on camera, said her son was deeply affected by the incident.

“Mentally, he’s just not the same. I could tell; he tries to keep himself occupied so he doesn’t think about it,” she said, “and he told me that it did affect him a lot.”

A 7News crew went to Garret-Hudson’s home on Friday. His family did not want to talk.

Garret-Hudson was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. On Wednesday, he appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer.

“I’m going to grant the state’s motion for pretrial detention,” she said.

The suspect faces charges of human trafficking and lewd and lascivious battery.

“Count one, human trafficking, is no bond., and count two is a second-degree felony. That bond is $7,500,” said Glazer.

The victim’s family told 7News that other families at the school had been complaining about Garret-Hudson and inappropriate advances that he was allegedly making toward their children for over a year.

Sheyes of Miami Learning Centers & Elementary School did not immediately respond to 7News’ request for comment.

Students react to BCPS approving measure to install metal detectors on campuses https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/students-react-to-bcps-approving-measure-to-install-metal-detectors-on-campuses/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 16:32:42 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425652 Select schools in Broward County are set to install metal detectors after the school board approved new measures that they hope will detect danger before it gets onto campuses. Some students are not convinced that those measures will change anything.

The Broward County Public Schools Board on Wednesday finalized a plan to install metal detectors at 31 district high schools and six K-12 centers. The initiative is set to kick off with a pilot program this summer at two schools, laying out the groundwork for a broader application that encompass 31 campuses throughout Broward County.

J.P. Taravella High School and Charles W. Flanagan High School are the two schools that will be in the pilot program starting in the summer.

7News on Thursday told students at J.P. Taravella High School about the news.

“There’s some threats going on around the school. They should really do that,” said a student.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” said Alma.

Students were less than thrilled when they were told their school would be installing metal detectors.

“Because, even though like, it’s for safety or whatever, I still think that students should, there should be a comfortable place to learn and like, I feel like us getting metal detectors every day is just not comfortable,” Alma said.

Broward County officials agreed that safety trumps comfort.

“It’s long overdue in my eyes,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata. “This was one of the tasks I did that I personally wanted to do.”

They hope this latest move will help lay the groundwork for a broader application that encompasses the 31 campuses throughout Broward County.

Since the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School that killed 17 people and left 17 others injured, there has been an emphases on school safety.

Although, metal detectors likely wouldn’t have made a difference in that shooting, since the shooter gained entry to the school through a side door.

“And I feel like it’ll change the dynamic of the the school to be honest,” Alma said.

Public schools in Miami Dade County use a mobile detection unit that searches for metal objects and weapons in schools. All schools in the county are subjected to random inspections.

In a statement, a spokesperson with Miami-Dade County Public Schools wrote:

“While there are no permanent metal detectors, MDCPS has a random metal detection program that is conducted by a Metal Detection Team. All Miami-Dade public schools are subject to a visit by a Metal Detection Team for a random inspection.”M-DCPS

Man critical after police-involved shooting near Brownsville park https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/man-critical-after-police-involved-shooting-near-brownsville-park/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 02:29:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425490 Police are investigating what they described as an officer-involved shooting near a park in Northwest Miami-Dade’s Brownsville neighborhood that sent a man to the hospital.

Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue units responded to the area of Northwest 24th Avenue and 50th Street, Wednesday night.

“Person shot, Northwest 50th Street and 24th Avenue,” a dispatcher is heard saying in radio transmissions.

The shots rang out near Brownsville Middle School and Marva Y. Bannerman Park.

According to police, the subject fled in his dark-colored Nissan after committing a traffic infraction on Wednesday evening. Once units located the vehicle, the subject hit a parked vehicle on 50th Street with his car.

Detectives said the subject exited the Nissan armed and began running across a park on 50th Street where children were playing.

“At the end of the day, you have an individual that’s fleeing from officers with a firearm in their hand,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta. “You don’t know what that person’s intentions are at the time.”

Video that has circulated on social media shows the moment shots were fired. Police are heard screaming at the man to drop the gun as he is seen running.

Seconds later, multiple shots are heard, even after the man hits the ground. Eventually, the injured man sits back up and falls to one side.

At one point in the video, after the gunfire ends, the man raises his arms in the air.

“You of course see him running through a park, where you’re visually seeing children playing,” said Zabaleta. “That’s something that clearly is a concern.”

Another video shows people who were playing basketball in the park running as gunshots are heard.

“Yo!” one person said on the video. “They still shooting.”

As detectives combed the scene, they said, the gun was recovered.

Neighbors were left terrified.

“It was a guy with, like, a black shirt, black pants running,” said one woman who did not want to identify herself. “Next thing we heard, we heard gunshots, like multiple gunshots. We actually dropped down to the floor.”

Witness Ronald Johnson told 7News that officers told him to get out of the area as shots rang out.

“You sound a little shaken up. Is it like nerve-wracking?” asked 7News reporter Joe Roetz.

“Yes, of course. I thought they were coming after me. I was like, ‘What did I do wrong?’ said Johnson. “They come out in full force, like army, like a hit squad almost, unfortunately. But I guess they are doing their job.”

Johnson said he was heading to a meeting at the Circle of Brotherhood, a group that tries to combat violence among Black men.

“All the other police surround me as if I did something wrong,” explained Johnson. “Then they just had to move their cars around the block.”

Another witness described what she saw.

“I saw two boys ran by, and then, after that, that’s when I heard the gunshots,” said a woman. “Like, what if a child would have gotten hit?”

Paramedics transported the man who came under fire to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. As of Thursday afternoon, he is listed in critical condition.

It is unclear whether or not police will charge the subject.

Neither the subject nor the officer has been identified.

Fort Lauderdale Police asking for public’s help in identifying armed sexual battery suspect https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/fort-lauderdale-police-asking-for-publics-help-in-identifying-armed-sexual-battery-suspect/ Wed, 20 Mar 2024 14:39:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1425051 Police are searching for a man who is accused of sexually battering a woman at gunpoint in Fort Lauderdale.

The incident occurred on Feb. 27. in the 700 block of Southeast 16th Street at around 2:30 a.m.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the victim was walking in the vicinity of the 1600 block of South Federal Highway when an unidentified suspect began trailing her in his vehicle.

Police said that the suspect then exited his vehicle armed with a handgun, confronted the victim and demanded money. Upon refusal, police said that the suspect forcibly took the victim back to his vehicle and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint.

“We’re investigating an armed sexual battery that occurred in the 1600 Block of South Federal Highway,” said Fort Lauderdale Police Sergeant Hector Martinez. “It is obvious that he was targeting the victim.”

After the assault, the victim managed to escape from the vehicle and flee the scene. The suspect also fled the scene.

“We think he has to know the area because the area he was driving around, where he met the victim, how he followed the victim,” said Martinez.

Video surveillance footage obtained as part of the investigation shows the suspect’s vehicle in the area before and after the incident.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, standing 5 feet 10 inches, with short dark hair, a clean-shaven face, and a medium build. He was possibly wearing a white t-shirt with a dark-colored sweater and long dark pants at the time of the incident.

“We are concerned that this person may do it again,” said Martinez.

Police said that he was driving a gray Hyundai sonata, believed to be a 2018 or 2019 model, with dark tinted windows and a paper tag instead of a real license plate.

“The rims appear to be an upgrade for that model,” said Martinez.

Authorities urge anyone with information or relevant video surveillance footage to contact Detective Sergeant Hector Martinez at 954-828-5510 or Detective Christopher Chylack at 943-828-5535.

Family of 46-year-old man injured in Miami police-involved shooting demand change https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/family-of-46-year-old-man-injured-in-miami-police-involved-shooting-demand-change/ Thu, 14 Mar 2024 16:22:40 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1422402 A week after a police response in Miami ended with officers opening fire, the family of a 46-year-old man who was shot is speaking out.

Donald Armstrong is now fighting for his life after he was shot by Miami Police on his front steps.

Armstrong’s family spoke to 7News, Thursday morning.

“If he was falling, why you going to shoot the man if you tased him already?” said Diedre Crumity, Armstrong’s aunt. “They shouldn’t have shot him. He was falling. And when he hit the ground, they still shoot him.”

His aunt is still trying to come to terms with what happened.

“He didn’t have a gun! That’s the problem,” she said. “I don’t understand. He didn’t have no gun, he didn’t have no knife. And you gone still shoot him?”

Cellphone video shows Armstrong holding an object in his hand.

After the March 7 shooting, a coalition of community members from across the state and across the country came together Thursday in the Northwest Miami neighborhood where it happened.

Those community members are demanding change.

“It’s really a shame that we see the solution to every problem as a man with a gun, like what does that say about our society?” said a speaker.

Cellphone video from the incident showed Armstrong getting into a verbal altercation with police on the steps of his home. Five police officers were standing near the front of a house and Armstrong was seen standing on the front porch wielding a blade.

Before the situation escalated, he was tased and as he fell to the ground, he was shot over nine times.

“A grave injustice is what they have done to us,” said a speaker. “The people who we thought were suppose to protect and serve us.”

Armstrong’s family told 7News that his condition is improving every day and is in a somewhat stable condition at the hospital but is unable to speak and communicate with his friends and family members.

The City of Miami Police Department has not responded to 7’s request for an interview.

Miami Seaquarium addresses eviction notice, claims grounds for termination are inaccurate https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/miami-seaquarium-addresses-eviction-notice-claims-grounds-for-termination-are-inaccurate/ Mon, 11 Mar 2024 23:02:27 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1421438 Miami Seaquarium released another response to the county’s eviction notice, with weeks to go before they have to vacate the property.

The theme park said the county’s grounds for their lease termination are factually and legally unfounded.

“We assert that the grounds for lease termination, as stated, are unfounded factually and legally- which we are prepared to defend through legal channels, if necessary,” said Miami Seaquarium Executive Director Edwin Gonzalez.

Last week, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava ordered the Dolphin Company to leave the property, they’ve occupied since 1955, by April 21 amid growing concerns and criticism over the care of the marine life.

“When a tenant fails to maintain the property, they are in direct violation of the lease,” Cava said.

In the eviction notice, county officials lay out their reasons for the decision, including a “long and troubling history of violations,” “failing to provide for the safe and adequate maintenance of the animals in its care.”

The notice also cites “alarming observations and conclusions documented by the [U.S. Department of Agriculture].”

Terminating the lease, county officials said, is the best path forward.

In a 9-page letter on Monday, the Seaquarium said it has made significant upgrades in their facilities and animal care programs, including over $200,000 to replace the floating dock in the Flipper Stadium.

The park said they also closed the last row of “The Golden Dome” to visitors after the county requested it following an inspection where the inspector noticed cracking and sprawling in the wall above that row.

The letter also pointed to the recent purchases of the new parrot trailers and said they have addressed all the concerns regarding the dolphin pools and sea lion area.

They even pointed to a building dedicated to Miami-Dade students who participate in park programs. They insist that it also addressed a 2022 non-compliance complaint by the USDA.

In the letter, the park writes “The USDA removed its concern in the subsequent Inspection Report on Nov. 14 2022. In other words, the USDA’s removal shows compliance by the Seaquarium. The Seaquarium has never been the subject of an USDA administrative enforcement action.

The park included photos and exhibits, which they said, “will clarify our position and demonstrate the proactive steps we have taken to adhere to our lease obligations and regulatory requirements.”

The seaquarium claimed that all of its animals are in a safe environment with no concerns, which makes the lease termination illegal.

Monday’s letter is the park’s response to their own document last week, which said, they intended to provide proof that none of the claims from the county are true.

A few days ago, 7News cameras captured Eduardo Albor, the president of The Dolphin Company, as he tried to speak with Levine Cava.

“She cares about the animals? Why doesn’t she come to see the animals?” said Albor.

Albor claimed changes and improvements have been made at the park.

“I will just let my lawyers defend our rights, because it is offensive to speak about my people, my people that are responsible for the animals, so I’ll let the lawyers do their work,” he said.

The Seaquarium said they would like to sit down with the county to come to some sort of resolution so they can stay on the property.

“We are hopeful that the enclosed response will pave the way for constructive dialogue between our organizations. Our goal is to find a mutually beneficial resolution that allows us to continue our important work without disruption,” the letter read.

7News has reached out to the county for comment but has not heard back.

District Seven Miami-Dade Commissioner Raquel Regalado denied 7News’ request for comment.

13-year-old girl shares encounter with man arrested in Homestead for attempted child abduction https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/13-year-old-girl-shares-encounter-with-man-arrested-in-homestead-for-attempted-child-abduction/ Mon, 11 Mar 2024 16:20:45 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1421308 Police on Monday arrested a 43-year-old man accused of an attempted abduction in Homestead.

Michael Luprecio was charged with attempted kidnapping of a child under the age of 13 and aggravated battery.

The victim, 13-year-old Candace Ramirez, spoke with 7News.

“I don’t know to be honest,” she said. “A bit sick right now.”

After her ordeal, Ramirez was left shocked and distraught.

“I was just crying, you know, ’cause like, it’s never really happened to me and like, I was just thinking about it and how and why did this happen to me? Why did this happen to me?” she said.

According to the arrest report, on Friday, Homestead Police responded to the scene where the alleged kidnapping happened. Once at the scene, an officer met with Ramirez and her mother.

Ramirez, the report stated, told the officer that she was walking her dog in front of her home along SW Fourth Street when she saw a dark Chevrolet turn directly into her driveway. She then saw Luprecio getting out of the car, opened the hood and started looking underneath the bay of the hood as if he was trying to fix his car.

The 13-year-old then said she started walking towards her yard and passed Luprecio. When she walked towards her door, Luprecio, she said, suddenly lunged towards her and grabbed her right wrist and lower buttocks, which caught her by surprise.

“I just ignored it ’cause I didn’t know him and all of a sudden he tried to grab me and then I pushed him away, I screamed at him, and then he grabbed my lower bottom and I was shocked, I couldn’t do anything,” she said.

According to police, Luprecio tried to put the teen into his car.

During a struggle with Luprecio, she said she screamed for help and was able to break free from his grip, ran inside her home and called the police.

“I just ran into my house,” she said. “He [her dog] started barking but he couldn’t do anything, you know, because of his size.”

CCTV video from a nearby business captured Luprecio entering his vehicle and fleeing the scene east on SW Fourth Street.

As detectives continued to investigate the case, they were able to locate Luprecio’s vehicle, which was parked at 1221 NW 9th St. Through video surveillance, detectives saw Luprecio entering his vehicle and drove away.

Officers then made contact with Luprecio during a traffic stop at the 900 block of Northwest Eighth Street in reference to an obscured tag. Luprecio told officers that he had a suspended license.

Luprecio was then read his Miranda rights and agreed to speak to police without an attorney present.

He was arrested and was transported to the Homestead Police Department for booking and was later transferred to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center

Luprecio appeared in court Monday afternoon, where a judge denied him bond.

“I’m gonna hold him no bond,” said the judge. “Sign the order granting a pre-trial detention hearing.”

Luprecio’s attorney asked the judge to release the suspect so he can attend a cancer treatment on Tuesday but the judge said the judge hearing his case will have to decide that.

Police said Luprecio has a criminal history.

“This person does have a criminal history. It is not his first run in with the law,” said Homestead Police Department Captain Fernando Morales.

When told that police captured Luprecio, Ramirez was relieved.

“You know they caught the guy?” said the reporter.

“They did?” she said.

“Yeah. Does that bring you any type of closure?” the reporter said.

“Yeah,” she said.

Now, Ramirez is trying to crack a smile and for the first time in several days, she can smile knowing that Luprecio is now behind bars.

“I just want to say to the girls, all of them out there, to always bring something to defend yourself if a man comes up to you,” said Ramirez.

Ramirez’s mother said she will stay home from school for a few days to catch up on some rest, ease on some of the stress, and spend some time with her chihuahua, Milo.

Homestead Police believe this may have happened to someone else. If something similar happened to you or someone you know, regarding the suspect, contact Homestead Police.

2 planes collide on tarmac at MIA, officials say; no injuries reported https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/2-planes-collide-on-tarmac-at-mia-officials-say-no-injuries-reported/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 17:44:40 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1420611 Two planes, officials said, collided on the tarmac Thursday night at Miami International Airport.

Video from Only In Dade showed a Frontier Airlines plane and an American Airlines plane parked on the tarmac, where one of the planes had a puncture on its tail.

According to both airlines involved, the wing tip of American Airlines flight 929, which was heading from MIA to Sao Paolo, Brazil, made contact with the tail of the parked Frontier aircraft.

7News spoke to a passenger who was supposed to be on the Frontier flight.

“There’s like a few hundred of us in the terminal all very, very angry,” Christian Galvez said.  “They told us that an American Airlines plane had clipped the back wing.”

Galvez, 25, was upset about the whole incident.

“We got to the airport two hours early, we end up being there for six hours. We paid for our flight, for our seat,” he said.

He told 7News he would have been in Texas if the planes didn’t collide.

“Go see the city, see the country, see some cows,” he said.

But the one thing that Galvez is worried about is whether or not he will get his money back after paying for his flight.

“If they decide to not refund all of our money, that’s like $500 lost,” he said. “We already spent money on tickets to go to the aquarium, to go to a bunch of other places in Texas that we are probably not going to get that money back either.”

Frontier Airlines provided the following statement:

Yesterday evening as a Frontier Airlines aircraft was parked at the gate at Miami International Airport, preparing to board passengers for a flight to Dallas-Fort Worth, an American Airlines aircraft pushing back from its gate came in contact with the Frontier aircraft. Only crew members were on board the Frontier aircraft at the time and no injuries have been reported. Frontier is currently assessing damage and re-accommodating customers.

Frontier Airlines

American Airlines also provided the following statement:

“During pushback from the gate in Miami (MIA), the wing tip of American Airlines flight 929 with service from MIA to São Paulo (GRU) made contact with the tail of a parked aircraft. Customers deplaned normally and the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this caused.”

46-year-old suspect who barricaded self in Hialeah taken into custody; no injuries reported https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/46-year-old-suspect-who-barricaded-self-in-hialeah-taken-into-custody-no-injuries-reported/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 16:17:26 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1420564 A SWAT unit took a man into custody after, police said, he barricaded himself inside a mobile home in Hialeah for hours.

Hialeah Police units responded to the residence, located in the area of East 17th Street and Sixth Avenue, Friday morning.

According to investigators, the individual was contained within a residence, surrounded by SWAT personnel.

7Skyforce hovered over the scene, where officers were seen surrounding the home and on the roofs of neighboring homes.

The suspect was later identified as 46-year-old Jordan Coviac.

Residents were told to evacuate their home as police continued to investigate.

7News spoke to one family in the area who were woken up by police and told to leave.

“We only felt the police knocking on doors and windows of our home ans telling us to get out, to get in our cars and get out,” said Lissandra Bacallao through a translator. “We were evacuated, and we have been in the car since 5 a.m., not able to go to work. It’s just been a mess.”

Nearby homeowners said the suspect first tried to enter their home with a weapon.

No injuries were reported.

It remains unclear what led to the man barricading himself.

The charges he may face were not disclosed.

Key Biscayne coach accused of sexual assault to remain behind bars as he awaits May trial; alleged victim testifies at hearing https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/key-biscayne-coach-accused-of-sexual-assault-to-remain-behind-bars-as-he-awaits-may-trial-alleged-victim-testifies-at-hearing/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 22:48:50 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1420350 An accused child predator will remain behind bars as he awaits trial following a new round of evidence introduced by prosecutors in the second day of pre-trial hearings.

In a pre-trial detention hearing on Thursday, the court listened to new testimony of another alleged victim who said South Florida gymnastics coach Oscar Olea sexually assaulted her when she was a minor.

“He started putting, like, equipment against the wall, where the windows were and things like gymnastics equipment to cover,” said the woman in a recorded testimony.

The woman, whose identity is being protected, is now 26 years old. She said she was assaulted by Olea when she was 13.

“He pushed me, and he starts kissing me,” she said.

The victim testified Olea encouraged her to take private lessons and that the first assault took place at the gymnastics studio where he taught her.

She said she and Olea had sex over 10 times.

She testified that Olea took her to his one-bedroom apartment, where his mother also lived.

At one point, she told investigators, Olea took her to get an ultrasound because he thought she was pregnant.

“How old were you when that occurred?” asked detectives.

“I was 13, 14 around that year,” said the victim.

“How old was Oscar?” asked detectives.

“He was 12 years older than me. I remember clearly, so he was, I believe, 26,” said the victim.

Olea is accused of inappropriately touching and in some cases having sexual relationship with minors he coached on Key Biscayne and in Coral Gables for over a decade.

The lead detective on the case for Key Biscayne Police also testified on Thursday, as the defense pieces together the timeline of Facebook messages between Olea and the alleged victims.

The defense said getting a correct timeline is important because of a scrutinized photo found in the messages showing a man romantically holding a young woman in front of a closet.

Prosecutors said the man in the picture is Olea. The defense argues that the quality of the photo makes it difficult to tell who the person is.

The judge ruled Thursday afternoon that Olea will remain behind bars until his trial begins on May 2.

Key Biscayne coach accused of sexual assault appears in court as interrogation video is released https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/key-biscayne-coach-accused-of-sexual-assault-appears-in-court-as-interrogation-video-is-released/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 23:36:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1419949 New details were revealed in court concerning a South Florida gymnastics coach accused of sexual assault involving girls, as police say there may be a trail of victims.

Oscar Olea is accused of inappropriately touching and in some cases having sexual relationship with minors he coached on Key Biscayne and in Coral Gables for over a decade.

Oscar Olea appeared in court Wednesday in his orange jumpsuit, as testimony from one of the victims was heard.

The testimony comes from a woman in her 20s who claimed she was 16 years old when she was sexually assaulted by the 38-year-old suspect.

The alleged victim said the coach took her virginity.

“It all happened so fast, like, I had zero control,” she said.

Police also released Olea’s interrogation video from September of 2023, when he spoke to Key Biscayne Police and described how he would touch female gymnasts, he said, in a playful way.

“Do you ever teach classes alone? Or your employees are always there with you?” the detective is seen asking in the video.

“Before I did, due to the fact that it was very hard to find employees, but now, I have employees working with me,” said Olea.

Olea admitted to teaching alone in the past but denied the allegations he had inappropriately touched a student.

“Don’t get me wrong, incidents do happen in gymnastics. But the fact, to look at a child, and say, in English, with the translation, ‘Oh, you have a big [expletive], I want to eat it.’ I’m not going to say it,” said Olea. “Pretty much, if I was in a relationship, I’m not gonna – not being funny or anything, but that’s like saying, like, that’s just, no.”

In another part of the video, investigators asked Olea about the way he would touch athletes he was coaching.

“When you say you tickle them in a playful manner, and you say the parents question you about it, can you demonstrate what you mean by that?” one of the detectives asked.

“Sure. Can I stand up?” said Olea.

Olea went on to describe to investigators how he would be “hands on” with gymnasts during sometimes private lessons, while other times with parents in the room.

“I’ll go around like, ‘Oh, my God, smile, smile, oh, my God.’ I’ll just lift them up and the mom, half the time, are there, the ones that see me doing that. And that’s it,” he said. “Or, like, I’ll go from here, like, ‘Tickle, tickle, tickle,’ like this. That’s it.”

But officers questioned Olea as to whether his techniques were standard practice.

“The tickling and the other stuff, is that part of standard training of gymnastics coaches?” asked a detective.

“No,” said Olea.

“Is that something that you think you do because you’re animated, as your describe?” asked the detective

“I do it because I’m animated, and at the same time, I do it because it’s built a good reputation, not reputation, rapport, or good vibe with the parents and kids in the sense, like, Coach Oscar is serious, but funny,” said Olea.

Olea’s charges come weeks after The Miami Herald published an investigation into him, including accusations from three alleged victims.

Key Biscayne Police also confirmed that an investigation into this case was opened in September 2023 regarding allegations that Olea inappropriately touched two students, ages 4 and 7, last year.

The case was turned over to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, but they never prosecuted him.

The State Attorney’s Office said the decision was made because of conflicting statements, and they decided to close the case in January.

Olea’s hearing will resume at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. The hearings are to determine whether or not Olea will remain behind bars until his trial.

Police pursuit ends in Florida City; 17-year-old in custody https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/police-pursuit-ends-in-florida-city-17-year-old-in-custody/ Mon, 04 Mar 2024 15:18:18 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1418891 A police pursuit ended in Florida City after a 17-year-old driver fled authorities.

Just before 9:30 a.m. Monday, the pursuit reportedly began near 202nd Avenue and Southwest 344th Street.

According to Miami-Dade Police, the officers tried to conduct a traffic stop on a white van in an unknown location when the driver took off in the car.

7Skyforce was overhead as the vehicle drove on Southwest 217th Avenue in Homestead heading south. He then fled police eastbound on 202nd Avenue in a white Chevy van.

The van was seen driving on sidewalks, racing down the street and splashing through puddles.

At one point, aviation officers following the vehicle had to steer clear of the Homestead Airport as the driver passed by because of skydivers in the area.

The white van was being followed by an unmarked vehicle and driving erratically before it ended up at an empty lot near 192nd Avenue and Southwest 344th Street.

The van coming to a stop after entering the lot and crashing into a wall.

With nowhere to go, the 17-year-old subject stopped at a fence and exited the van to try to jump over from the hood but failed to do so. Police officers surrounded the culprit with their guns drawn and continued to arrest the subject.

Yalina, a witness of the ended pursuit and nearby resident, was on the other side of the fence watching it all play out.

“I would say this sometimes occurs here but like this one? No. It’s good that the police captured the guy because now we feel more safety,” said Yalina.

The subject was allegedly wanted for fleeing a police officer during a traffic stop.

Miami-Dade Police said that since the driver is a juvenile, he won’t face any charges. Instead, he will be issued traffic citations.

Suspect arrested months after North Miami-Dade liquor store shooting; victim speaks out https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/suspect-arrested-months-after-north-miami-dade-liquor-store-shooting-victim-speaks-out/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 17:23:05 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1418138 A man who, police said, shot a liquor store employee in North Miami-Dade has been arrested months after the incident.

Miami-Dade Police held a press conference Friday morning announcing the arrest of 34-year-old Norman Wright.

On hand at the news conference was the victim, Emmanuel Taylor. He shared his thoughts with the media for the first time since the ordeal.

“Seventy-one years young. No, I’m feeling pretty good,” he said.

The shooting occurred on Dec. 7 at Jensen’s Liquors, located on North Miami Avenue, just north of 79th Street.

According to investigators, Wright walked into the business just before 6 p.m. and demanded some sort of refund for merchandise he was returning.

When Taylor denied the refund, Wright allegedly grabbed a liquor bottle and tried to leave the store.

That is when Taylor stepped from behind the counter and approached Wright. Police said a struggle ensued between the two men inside the store, and moments later, it spilled into the parking lot of the business.

Security footage captured Wright as he fell. When he hit the ground, the video showed the flash from the firearm.

“There are so many guns out there on the street that, you know, anybody can get shot anywhere, at anytime, you know?” Taylor said. “Doesn’t matter where I am, you know? Or who I am.”

Taylor said he spent more than two months in the hospital.

“The funny thing was that I wasn’t in a lot of pain, no,” Taylor said. “I was in a lot of discomfort, only because I was in the hospital, I was intubated for like three weeks, but other than that, I was fine. Not a lot of pain.”

Detectives told 7News that they found Wright from a trail of evidence that he left behind at the crime scene.

Late Friday morning, Wright appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer. He was charged with armed robbery and attempted murder.

“I’m going to grant the state’s motion for pretrial detention and hold you with no bond,” said Glazer.

As for Taylor, he keeps a smile on his face and his head high, knowing that Wright is behind bars.

“Ecstatic. I’m happy that he got arrested because he could be doing it to somebody else,” he said. “We’ve got to get these people off the street.”

Wright has a previous criminal history that includes possession of cannabis and resisting an officer without violence. He remains at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade.

Video shows alleged hazing by University of Miami’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity members https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/video-shows-alleged-hazing-by-university-of-miamis-sigma-alpha-epsilon-fraternity-members/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 23:16:17 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1417895 A disturbing video that leaked online appears to depict members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at the University of Miami engaging in a troubling act of hazing within their fraternity house.

The video, which has garnered attention on social media, shows one student crouching inside a trash can while others surrounding him chug large amounts of milk.

They then proceed to spit and vomit onto the student in the trash can, leaving a disgusting mix of milk and vomit running down his back.

Thankfully, it appeared that no one was seriously injured.

In response to the circulating video, the University of Miami issued the following statement to 7News:

“The University of Miami has received multiple reports related to alleged conduct violations by one of our fraternity chapters. We are aware of videos being circulated but can only confirm the authenticity of one video. A full investigation is underway. ”

The unidentified student in the video appears to be unaware of being filmed, surrounded by other fraternity members. The person capturing the footage seems to be located in a nearby apartment rather than within the fraternity.

However, it’s not all fun and games. The incident may have legal consequences beyond university disciplinary actions.

Under the Florida Anti-Hazing Law, also known as the Chad Meredith Act, hazing might be considered a felony if it recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student.

This law was enacted in 2005 following the tragic death of UM student Chad Meredith, who drowned in Lake Osceola after hours of drinking with two Kappa Sigma students.

This alleged hazing incident follows the closure of UM’s Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter in 2022. The closure resulted from a leaked video showing members of the fraternity chanting disturbing remarks about raping and murdering women.

When asked to comment on the alleged hazing, members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity asked a 7News crew to leave their property. Several of them told 7News reporter Michael Hudak that they had no idea what he was talking about.

Cross-county police chase involving Tahoe reported stolen from Margate ends at MIA; 1 in custody https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/cross-county-police-chase-involving-tahoe-reported-stolen-from-margate-ends-at-mia-1-in-custody/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 11:53:23 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1417267 Authorities arrested a man at Miami International Airport after he sent police on a chase in a vehicle that was stolen from a business in Margate.

On Wednesday morning, a Miami-Dade Police officer followed a black Chevy Tahoe on the westbound State Road 112 expressway, heading to MIA, after the department was notified that the Broward Sheriff’s Office Aviation team was following it out of Broward County.

“Right now, you’re looking at Miami-Dade Police officers pursuing this black Tahoe,” said an aerial camera reporter.

According to officials, the driver traveled onto southbound Interstate 95 and headed into North Miami, then Northeast Miami-Dade. He eventually made his way to MIA.

7Skyforce was overhead just before the police pursuit ended, capturing the black vehicle swerving through traffic before heading to the heavily policed airport.

“They’re driving it like it’s stolen through all the streets of North Miami, Biscayne Boulevard, also out west by Opa-locka,” said the aerial camera reporter.

As the driver approached the airport, he was seen entering the departure lanes.

“OK, let’s see if he’s going to the arrivals or departures section of the airport here,” said the aerial camera reporter.

He opted for departures.

Video footage captured the SUV driving into the American Airlines main terminal. He stopped just before passing a crosswalk in front of Terminal E where authorities immediately handcuffed the man behind the wheel without incident.

Witnesses watched it all unfold and questioned why the man drove the stolen car to the airport.

Abhi, who is visiting Miami from New York, could not contain his laughter upon learning where the motorist ended up.

“This seems like the worst place to end a car chase, at the airport. There’s a lot of police here,” he said.

“I heard the new ‘Bad Boys’ is being filmed. This looks like the new set,” said Sanka, Abhi’s friend, who is also visiting Miami from New York. “This is a great, warm welcome to Miami.”

According to Margate Police, the black Chevy Tahoe was stolen out of a business, Tuesday night.

Footage from the scene showed some damage to the passenger side of the vehicle, but it is unknown if that occurred during the chase.

Law enforcement remained at the scene as they investigated this incident.

Michael Wilson, the owner of Wilson Window Tinting in Margate, told 7News the car is his.

“Somebody came in here late last night, around 9, 10 o’clock, they smashed the window, came in and stole some stuff, took our shop vehicle,” said Wilson. “They went through the drawers here, and the laptop sitting here.”

Wilson provided 7News with all of the security footage showing two subjects inside the shop. They eventually got the keys to the Tahoe and took off.

“They broke the window. We don’t know overall everything he took,” said Wilson.

However, Wilson is certain that the crooks took several thousand dollars worth of film and tools, loaded them into the Tahoe and made out like bandits.

“Everything’s tough right now. Everybody’s hurting for money and, you know, now we just lost a lot of product,” he said.

However, at the end of the pursuit, only one person was in the vehicle.

On Wednesday morning, a detective was assigned to auto crimes saw the vehicle in Miramar, Wednesday morning.

No air traffic delays were reported, but the road was temporarily blocked off past Terminal E. Drivers were able to pass through once the driver of the Tahoe was driven off in the back of a Miami-Dade Police car.

“How does the story end?” said Sanka.

“Can I show you? I’m going to pull it up” said 7News reporter Michael Hudak.

“Yeah, sure,” said Sanka.

“A gateway driver rushing through traffic,” a reporter on video is heard saying.

“Was he late for a flight or something? Couldn’t catch an Uber?” said Sanka. “Police escort!”

Abhi correctly guessed the ending to the pursuit.

“If the car chase ended here, I feel like the person was definitely apprehended,” said Abhi.

The takedown happened on camera, near Door 13 on Terminal E.

No injuries were reported in this incident.

Police later identified the man they arrested as 57-year-old Walter L. Griggs. He faces a list of charges, including grand theft and fleeing and eluding police.

Miami-Dade Police have not confirmed whether they are still looking for a second subject or whether the damaged car is indeed the vehicle involved in this chase.

4 passengers file lawsuit against Thriller Miami Speedboat Adventures after tour boat, vessel collide off PortMiami https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/4-passengers-file-lawsuit-against-thriller-miami-speedboat-adventures-after-tour-boat-vessel-collide-off-portmiami/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 17:44:44 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1416898 Several passengers are taking legal action against a tour boat company after a collision on the water out of Bayside sent 13 people to the hospital.

The collision happened on Feb. 11, miles away from PortMiami. Several agencies, including Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, units with City of Miami Fire Rescue, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene.

According to MDFR, two vessels collided, injuring 29 people in total.

Paramedics transported 13 patients, and at least one of them was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Newly obtained video taken by one of the victims on board the Thriller tour boat showed the point of impact when a private vessel crashed into the tour boat.

“Our clients have suffered fractures, traumatic brain injuries, loss of consciousness, very serious things that’s going to be with them for life,” said Thomas Graham, an attorney with Mausner Graham Injury Law PLLC.

Graham and Eric J. Mausner are representing four of those victims.

“Our clients are actually from New York, they came down for a nice Miami weekend and unfortunately, they got into this horrible accident,” Mausner said.

Both attorneys believe that the Thriller vessel and the private vessel are at fault for the collision.

“When you’re a captain out on the water, especially taking passengers for hire, you have to maintain a safe speed, maintain a lookout and avoid collisions, and none of that happened here on behalf of either boat,” Graham said.

“It does look like the charter boat T-boned the Thriller boat, but the Thriller boat may have turned into the lane of the charter boat,” Masuner said. “We have to do more investigation.”

Graham and Mausner plan to file multiple lawsuits.

“We believe both bare liability, both failed to follow navigation rules,” Graham said. “And again, this is something that should not have happened and it caused horrible injuries.”

7News has also recently obtained the waiver passengers signed before they got on board the tour boat.

According to the waiver, if signed, passengers are acknowledging that “participation in guided speedboat tour activities entails known and unanticipated risks that could result in physical or emotional injury, paralysis, or death.”

The attorneys said, despite what the waiver said, their clients are entitled to damages.

Since Feb. 11, 7News has reached out to Thriller Miami Speedboat Adventures for comment on the collision but has not heard back from the company.

The U.S. Coast Guard is also investigating the crash, which could potentially lead to more lawsuits in addition to the civil suit.

Authorities respond to incident involving seaplane near PortMiami; no injuries reported https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/authorities-respond-to-incident-involving-seaplane-near-portmiami-no-injuries-reported/ Fri, 23 Feb 2024 19:23:04 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1415813 Authorities responded to an incident involving a seaplane near PortMiami.

The incident occurred at around 1:45 p.m., Friday, and it reportedly involved a total of seven passengers on board the seaplane.

According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, all passengers have been successfully evacuated from the aircraft and no injuries have been reported.

7Skyforce hovered over the scene, where the seaplane could be seen in the water flipped on its side.

“You can see is it on its one side there, one pontoon visible, one underwater, along with what would be the right wing there,” said 7News Ralph Rayburn.

According to FlightAware, the plane is a Cessna 208 with the tail number N85WL, and it departed from Palm Beach International Airport at 1:04 p.m.

A witness who spoke to 7News said he saw the plane coming down.

“We just saw it come down, we didn’t see it land. Not actually, to this moment, not really sure what happened,” said Santi.

7News spoke to four people that were onboard the seaplane.

“Is everyone OK?” the reporter asked.

“Yeah, thanks for asking,” said one of the people.

“What, how did that happen?” the reporter said.

“Just a, uh, yeah yeah,” said the person.

“How many people were on the plane? It seats like nine people, right?” asked the reporter.

The person turned around and did not want to talk after he saw the reporter’s camera.

Another man, that was seen standing next to the plane, told 7News that “everyone is OK.”

The seaplane was towed by Sea Tow back to the Miami seaplane base on the MacArthur Causeway where it remains.

It is unclear why the plane went down.

The National Transportation Safety Board said they are aware of the situation and are gathering information.

Father charged with 2nd-degree murder after shooting son in NW Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/father-charged-with-2nd-degree-murder-after-shooting-son-in-nw-miami-dade/ Thu, 22 Feb 2024 15:56:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1415248 A father was arrested after, police said, he fatally shot his son during an argument in Northwest Miami-Dade.

Sixty-eight-year-old Michael Tyndale was charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court, Thursday afternoon.

“Good afternoon, sir, you were charged with one count of second-degree murder,” said Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer.

Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue units responded to a domestic dispute along the 19000 block of West Lake Drive in Northwest Miami-Dade, Wednesday afternoon.

“[The address is] 19526 West Lake Drive. Person shot, ‘my father just shot me,'” a dispatcher said.

According to the arrest report, the family was inside the home when Tyndale and his son started arguing. Tyndale, armed with a handgun, then followed his son to the kitchen, pointed the gun at him, and fired a single shot, striking his son in the head.

Immediately after being shot, Tyndale’s son, identified as 44-year-old Markian Tyndale, fell to the ground but was able to dial 911, letting police know that his father shot him and that he was dying.

Cellphone video shot by a neighbor captured paramedics transporting Markian to the hospital.

“He was later airlifted to [HCA Florida] Aventura Hospital, where he sadly succumbed to his wounds,” said Miami-Dade Detective Andre Martin.

Tyndale, according to the arrest report, also called 911 following the shooting. He remained on the scene and was taken into custody by MDPD. He was then transported to the MDPD Homicide Bureau, where he invoked his right to an attorney.

Tyndale’s wife, who witnessed the shooting, was also detained and provided investigators with a sworn statement that he fatally shot their son.

Tyndale was arrested and was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade.

The troubling news spread to the neighborhood, Thursday morning.

“When I saw all of these police tapes, I was like ‘Wow. This is unbelievable.’ This is horrible. This is just terrible, terrible, terrible,” said Lorena Rojas.

A woman stopped by to check on Mrs. Tyndale.

“I didn’t have any person, you know, and I’m here because her sister gave me her address, and I just wanted to check on her to see how everything was going,” said the woman.

A family is now left shattered, and a grieving mother and wife is left to pick up the pieces.

On Thursday night, 7News cameras captured a private hazmat crew walking in and out of the home as they cleaned up the crime scene.

It remains unclear what the argument between Tyndale and his son was about.

The wife and mother, who witnessed the shooting, told 7News that she told police everything that happened and she is done talking about it.

Michael Tyndale remains in jail with no bond.

Pembroke Pines man speaks out after truck stolen from home; alleged thieves captured on surveillance cameras https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/pembroke-pines-man-speaks-out-after-truck-stolen-from-home-alleged-thieves-captured-on-surveillance-cameras/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 21:49:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1414501 A Pembroke Pines man is speaking out after his truck was stolen from his home overnight. The whole incident was captured on his surveillance cameras.

The victim, Victor Pumo, said his Ford F-250 truck was parked outside his driveway when it was stolen on Tuesday, just before 2:30 a.m.

“It was parked right here where with this rent-a-car is now,” Pumo said. “So I’m working the auto remote in the garage and I don’t hear the alarm when I click it, and I clicked it again and didn’t beep, I said, ‘Oh, no,’ and then I opened the door to see that empty driveway.”

Surveillance cameras captured two suspects getting out of a white Mercedes Benz as they approached Pumo’s truck.

The alleged crooks didn’t simply get onto Pumo’s property and steal the truck, they also surveyed the area as they drove up and down the street in their car.

“They acted like they owned the place,” Pumo said.

During the theft, one of the suspects was seen standing near the truck as he appeared to wait for his accomplice to hack into the truck by using an electronic tablet that he was holding.

Once the suspects were able to gain access to the truck, the truck’s alarm went off.

“You work hard for nice things then people who are too lazy to get a job, they want to come and do this for a living,” Pumo said. “Lucky for them, I didn’t hear them.”

Pumo told 7News that his vehicle was locked and has no idea how they were able to break into it.

“Good thing we’re in good hands with Allstate,” Pumo said.

If you have any information on this crime, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Tamarac woman says she narrowly escaped partial ceiling collapse caused by stormy weather https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/tamarac-woman-says-she-narrowly-escaped-partial-ceiling-collapse-caused-by-stormy-weather/ Mon, 19 Feb 2024 03:14:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1414056 The soggy weather that battered South Florida this holiday weekend caused part of the ceiling to collapse inside an apartment in Tamarac, and now a woman is voicing her frustrations.

The resident, who asked not to be identified, thought the rain would be the only thing coming down on Sunday.

“It just collapsed in front of my eyes,” she said.

But she was wrong.

“It was just a little bit of water dripping all of a sudden, and I look at the rooms, and then I see exactly when the roof collapsed,” she said.

The woman, who’s a tenant at an apartment building, said she was relaxing when, all of a sudden, the rain ripped a hole in her roof, causing the partial ceiling collapse.

The resident said the ceiling fell in front of her face and almost on top of her.

“I was there because I was ready to lie down, but when I see all the water, then I backed out,” she said.

Thank goodness she did.

“Of course, I scream,” she said.

Officials with Tamarac Fire Rescue said this was not a roof collapse but some water intrusion.

But the rain and the partial ceiling collapse nevertheless put a damper on everything.

“I was worried, and then I’m by myself. That’s why I was shaking. I don’t know who to call,” said the tenant.

Thankfully, she called 911.

The tenant said the pieces of her ceiling will take some time to reassemble, but material things can be replaced.

“I don’t even know what’s going to happen now, to be honest with you,” she said.

Fortunately, the American Red Cross is helping her out until she can pick up the pieces at home.

Greater Miami Jewish Federation celebrates solidarity with Israel at Miami Beach event; retiring CEO Jacob Solomon honored https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/greater-miami-jewish-federation-celebrates-solidarity-with-israel-at-miami-beach-event-retiring-ceo-jacob-solomon-honored/ Mon, 19 Feb 2024 01:44:27 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1414030 The South Florida Jewish community showed their support for Israel at a special ceremony in Miami Beach, held four months after the surprise attack from Hamas.

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation hosted “The Main Event – An Extraordinary Night of Jewish Community,” at the Loews Miami Beach, Sunday evening.

The federation described the event as “a momentous celebration of Jewish community and solidarity with Israel.”

Reuven “Ruvy” Rivlin, who served as the 10th president of Israel between 2014 and 2021, was the evening’s keynote speaker.

The event also honored Jacob Solomon, president and CEO of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, who is retiring after 40 years. He received the Friend of Israel Humanitarian Award.

Speaking with 7News, Solomon praised the local Jewish community for their generosity and commitment.

“For one thing, I have enormous pride at the accomplishments of the federation and our Jewish community,” he said. “We have an awesome community here, people who really care, they’re deeply engaged, and they’re very generous in terms of their resources, their time and their talent.”

Sunday’s event takes place hours after overnight strikes in Gaza killed 18 people.

Solomon addressed the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East.

“I think, as a people, we’re going into a challenging phase — antisemitism, the war in Israel, increase in isolation — and I think Jewish unity and resilience is more important than ever,” he said.

Also on hand at The Main Event was Michael Herzog, the Israeli Ambassador to the United States since 2021.

It has been more than 130 days since Hamas’ surprise Oct. 7 attack. Israeli officials said they will not back down anytime soon.

Key Biscayne bike rider dies after being struck by e-bike ridden by 12-year-old; mayor calls for e-bike ban https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/key-biscayne-bike-rider-dies-after-being-struck-by-e-bike-ridden-by-12-year-old-mayor-calls-for-e-bike-ban/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 22:24:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1413186 A fatal crash claimed the life of a woman on Key Biscayne who was out for a bicycle ride.

Megan Andrews, 66, was fatally hit by a 12-year-old while riding her bicycle at the intersection of Woodcrest Road and Hampton Lane, Wednesday night.

Mark Fried, a life-long friend of the victim, said she was more than a one-in-a-million type of person.

“She was an amazing educator. She taught my nephew who has special needs,” he said. “She’s known and loved by the community. That gives me the privilege to cry.”

Fried described the crash scene.

“There were four or five police cars with lights on, and there was a crime tape,” he said.

Fried pointed the finger to the Village of Key Biscayne government, saying that for too long, they’ve treated potential e-bikes and scooter accidents as “no big deal.” Back in February, he wrote the village council a letter about the problem.

“Stop signs don’t mean anything. Cars don’t mean anything. They are just out there,” he said. “There are two sides of the story. One is the failure of leadership and not setting or enforcing rules. The bigger story is the loss of a wonderful woman.”

Neighbors agree with Fried’s assessment.

“If you have kids, 10 years old, younger or older, driving around these bikes that are 30 miles per hour, speed limit here is 20 miles per hour. Running stop signs. Going in the wrong direction, one-way streets,” said George Nelson, the victim’s neighbor.

In Florida, there is no age limitation or license needed to use an e-bike.

For years, and as recently as Tuesday night, residents appeared at the Village Council meeting to warn members that something awful could happen if they don’t crack down on children, who are years away from obtaining a valid driver’s license, riding e-bikes at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour.

Residents said these kid drivers are simply ignoring or don’t know the rules of the road.

“I’d like to say that the safety and security of our residents is a top priority,” said Key Biscayne Mayor Joe Rasco during Tuesday’s meeting.

Tuesday’s meeting ended with village officials being asked to draft their opinion on the matter. But following the death of Andrews, Rasco is rolling out immediate measures.

“Residents are so outraged by the ongoing crashes by e-bikes that the mayor has announced an emergency city council meeting on Friday, Feb. 16, where I will be proposing an emergency ban on e-bikes and scooters effective immediately,” said Rasco in a video.

But neighbors said the move by the village could be too little, too late.

“She is a pillar of the community. I grew up with her two children, and it’s just a big loss since we’ve all been trying to control these e-bikes that have gotten wild out here,” said Nelson.

“This leadership, they didn’t do their jobs,” Fried said.

Rasco’s office told 7News that the mayor was not available for an interview on Thursday but would have more to say in Friday’s meeting, set to begin at 9 a.m.

It is unclear whether or not the 12-year-old involved in the fatal crash will face any consequences.

Attempted break-in gone bad: Victim fatally shoots car thief in NW Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/attempted-break-in-gone-bad-victim-fatally-shoots-car-thief-in-nw-miami-dade/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 11:29:20 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1412527 The victim of an attempted car break-in in Northwest Miami-Dade turned the tables on two subjects, setting off a deadly chain of events that ended in an overnight crash, police said.

Surveillance video captured the moment when, police said, the alleged carjackers crashed into a home in the area of Northwest 79th Avenue and 192nd Street, just before 2:30 a.m., Wednesday.

The security footage also shows one subject fleeing the scene.

At around 6 a.m., 7News cameras captured a large police presence and multiple damaged vehicles in the neighborhood.

According to Miami-Dade Police, two subjects were trying to break into a car in front of a home when the victim interrupted.

“That vehicle’s owner came out and confronted those two subjects,” said MDPD Detective Andre Martin.

Investigators said an altercation erupted between the vehicle’s owner and the subjects.

“The vehicle’s owner produced a firearm, fired into the direction of the subjects. The subjects fled in a nearby vehicle,” said Martin.

The driver smashed into a few other vehicles as the car came to a stop close to where the incident began, causing serious property damage.

“The person that was shot was the subject that we have deceased here on the scene. It is unknown whether or not anyone else was injured in this incident,” said Martin.

A neighbor who lives in the area and identified himself as Daniel spoke to 7News about the crash. Speaking in Spanish, he said he didn’t know what happened to the cars.

“Look at this mess. I am waiting for the insurance to arrive and remove the cars,” he said. “No, I’m not the owner of the house. I don’t even know what happened here.”

7Skyforce captured the subject’s body near the white vehicle.

A family arrived on the scene shortly after, and a woman was seen breaking down on the ground and crying. The man who was comforting the woman came back to the scene on Wednesday afternoon.

Reporters swarmed the man, asking him his relationship to the victim.

“That’s my son,” said the man.

Anita, another neighbor with spoke to 7News, said her Ring camera captured the aftermath of the crash.

“[It was at] 2:46 a.m. The police, you see, when they crash,” she said.

Martin, meanwhile, had a message for the community, especially for people who might encounter somebody who is trying to break into their car.

“Citizens who find themselves becoming a victim of a crime, not to confront these subjects,” Martin said. “It’s very dangerous. You don’t know how desperate these people are, and you don’t know how that situation might end. So we urge the community, if you find yourself become the victim of a crime, do not confront the subjects. Please contact the police.”

Another subject is still on the run, as police continue their search. It is unclear what this individual looks like.

It also remains unclear whether the victim who shot and killed the alleged thief will face any charges.

If you have any information on this attempted break-in, shooting or crash that could help police, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Pinecrest Police responded to a disturbance between customers on Feb. 1 at the restaurant located at 8975 S Dixie Hwy.

Two men got into a heated argument after a man in a blue shirt got impatient after waiting four minutes for a guy in a black shirt to finish ordering at the cash register.

But the man in the black shirt was never able to finish ordering as the man in the blue shirts starts getting angry.

The man in the black shirt, identified as Enrique Fernandez, tells the man in the blue shirt that he can skip him and order first. That suggestion was the spark of the fight as the two ended up squaring off against each other.

Video showed Fernandez getting brutally attacked by the man in the blue shirt as he gets whacked in the face, nailed in the neck, and smashed into the cash register.

The footage continued to show Fernandez fighting back; he throws a chair towards the man in the blue shirt, striking him on his side. The man in blue then exits the restaurant.

Shortly after, both men left the restaurant, and man Fernandez returned holding a towel over his bloody face. Police and rescue crews arrived on scene to assess the situation.

Customers entering the Pinecrest restaurant on Monday were shocked to see the fight that occurred earlier this month.

“That’s crazy,” said one man as he was shown the video.

“That’s so crazy,” said another person.

The subject wearing the blue shirt is still at large as police continue looking for him.

If you have any information on this restaurant brawl, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000

Man injured in Thriller tour boat crash speaks out; dozens injured https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/man-injured-in-thriller-tour-boat-crash-speaks-out-dozens-injured/ Mon, 12 Feb 2024 21:25:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1412023 A victim who was injured after a tour boat crashed in PortMiami is speaking out. The crash also left dozens of others injured.

“We were on the speedboat with my parents,” said Mendy, a passenger on the boat.

“Who was on the boat,” the reporter asked.

“Me, him, him,” said Mendy’s younger sibling.

The man said his family of six boarded the Thriller tour boat at Downtown Miami’s Bayside on Sunday. They sat down on the back right side of the boat, expecting a family joyride, but that expectation was short-lived.

“Probably about five minutes in, we started the actual speeding part. Next thing I knew, all of a sudden, there was a big impact,” said Mendy.

He said a private vessel crashed into the left side of the speedboat while they were riding through Fisherman’s Cut.

New video of the vessel captured on Monday morning showed the side broken in with its chairs out of place from the impact.

“I saw a bunch of people on the left side of the boat just flying out of their seats,” he said. “One woman, she landed right by my feet and she was unconscious, bleeding from her head. I was able to hear the blood in her lungs as she was breathing.”

Mendy told 7News that the woman was airlifted to Jackson Memorial. The rest were transported by U.S. Coast Guard boats or by speedboat to be taken to the shore.

On Monday, his family walked out of Jackson Memorial, hours after the crash.

“Some fractured bones but nothing that time can’t heal with,” said Mendy.

The victim said he’s not from South Florida and was only in town for his cousin’s Bar Mitzvah.

The victim’s parents are still recovering from non-serious injuries at Jackson Memorial.

Rabbi Yossi Harlig, Mendy’s uncle, spoke to 7News after he visited his sister and family in the hospital on Monday.

“It sent shockwaves through our family,” said Harlig

Mendy said he has no resentment for anyone involved in this incident because he calls it purely, a terrible accident.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are still investigating. Although their investigation is ongoing, FWC announced on Monday that they will be releasing an initial report later in the day.

Miami Seaquarium loses accreditation, violating lease https://wsvn.com/entertainment/miami-seaquarium-loses-accreditation-violating-lease/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 15:14:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1410936 The Miami Herald reported that the Miami Seaquarium lost its accreditation from the American Humane’s animal welfare certification program, violating its lease with Miami-Dade County.

A recent inspection report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture exposed alarming concerns about animal treatment at the 55-year-old marine park. The report revealed issues that included a sea lion experiencing blindness from cataracts, rusty bird cages, mold in the penguin house, ants in a vitamin cabinet, a dolphin ingesting a nail and another jumping from a pool barrier. Additionally, flamingos were found wading in dirty water.

In 2023, the seaquarium’s website listed several accreditations, which included the American Humane Conservation, the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums and IMATA Animal Trainer Development Program.

The loss of the seaquarium’s accreditation leaves it in violation of its lease with Miami-Dade County, but they vowed to stay open. The park’s only remaining certification, from the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums, falls short of the lease requirements, which mandate certifications from both AMMPA and American Humane.

7News reached out to the American Humane and IMATA that appeared to have dropped their support for the seaquarium. As of late Friday afternoon, they have not responded back.

This latest development comes after a controversial year for the seaquarium. Lolita, the killer whale who lived at the park for more than 50 years, died back in August at age 57. Several animals have since been transferred to other facilities.

In addition, a dolphin named Sundance died from stomach pain while in captivity. The park has since faced several critical reports, including a Jan. 9 report from the USDA citing a “lack of appropriate veterinary care for 25 animals.”

Susan Hargreaves, the founder of the charity Animal Hero Kids, spoke with 7News on Friday afternoon.

“I feel we’re in the final days of the Miami Seaquarium,” she said. “These are all nails in the coffin of the Miami Seaquarium.”

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who previously announced plans to terminate the Seaquarium’s lease, expressed concerns after the reports were made public.

“It is with profound frustration that I must convey the county’s deep-seated concerns regarding the quality of care provided to the animals at the seaquarium,” she said.

Hargreaves, a veteran South Florida animal rights activist and educator, has been protesting the seaquarium since 1986. She said she has a possible solution.

“Turn it into Veganza Animal Heroes theme park, where we teach about being kind to animals, being kind to the planet,” she said.

The seaquarium has yet to release a formal statement in response to these allegations and has not responded to 7News’ inquiry on the recent developments.

Riders upset after Miami-Dade Transit announces yearlong shutdown of Metromover’s Inner Loop https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/riders-upset-after-miami-dade-transit-announces-yearlong-shutdown-of-metromovers-inner-loop/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 22:49:23 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1410670 Metromover riders were not happy to learn about an upcoming closure that might complicate their commutes.

Miami-Dade Transit on Thursday announced an extended yearlong closure of the Inner Loop starting later this year as they make repairs and improvements to the transit system.

County officials said they are shutting down the Inner Loop to test and store the newly retrofitted mover cars.

Officials said the system overall will remain open and operational. Riders will still be able to travel through downtown Miami, Brickell and the Omni Loop districts.

The Inner Loop is the route that takes riders through Bayfront Park, the Knight Center and Government Center. It is one-third of the Metromover system, the train service that takes people all over Miami-Dade County.

Residents spoke to 7News to share their displeasure with the plan.

“For a third of that to disappear, that’s going to affect where people like me can go,” said Michael, who is visiting from London.

“I think it is a bad decision,” said Elizabeth Zeledon, who takes the Inner Loop every day. “You are not considering everyone’s needs, and that is very important. There is a lot of people here that doesn’t have a car and uses it every day.”

Another resident, Ricardo, is also not happy.

“For me, it’s very bad, because it makes it more difficult for transportation,” he said.

“As someone who is not from here, this sort of infrastructure is invaluable as a tourist when you are trying to figure out where to go,” said Michael.

News of the upcoming Inner Loop closure comes on the heels of major renovations and replacements by Miami-Dade County at Miami International Airport, where they announced that the SkyTrain, which has been closed since Sept. 2023, will hopefully be 75% functional this spring.

An exact date for the upcoming Inner Loop closure has not been determined.

When the upgrades are completed, the various loops — Inner, Brickell and Omni — will be able to run in different directions as needed, unlike the current system, which can only move in one direction.

Family speaks out as police search for hit-and-run driver after fatal collision in NW Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/family-speaks-out-as-police-search-for-hit-and-run-driver-after-fatal-collision-in-nw-miami-dade/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 13:26:43 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1409124 The family of a 55-year-old that, police say, was left to die following a hit-and-run Tuesday is desperately looking for answers.

According to officials, around 6 a.m. Tuesday, a vehicle hit a scooter in the area of Northwest 22nd Avenue and 54th Street. The driver and passenger of the car fled the scene on foot, prompting police to search the vicinity.

“Please. Give my family closure. He didn’t deserve this,” said Nykia Eating, the victim’s stepdaughter.

Eating returned to the scene Tuesday evening to place balloons and flowers as a way to remember her stepfather.

“I just pray that he find justice. They left him. They just left him like that. My family is hurting right now,” said Eating.

The family identified the victim as Anthony Manning. They say he was a man loved by everyone.

“He was known. Everybody loved him. We loved him so much. We miss him already,” said Eating.

Miami-Dade Police said the driver ran a red light and hit the male victim as he was on his way to work, killing him on the scene.

“He was at my house last night. He kept saying ‘I want to go to work tomorrow.’ He kept telling everybody, ”I gotta go, I gotta go to work tomorrow. He died trying to go to work,” said Eating.

Police are searching for the hit-and-run driver who took off by foot along with a passenger after crashing into Manning.

The family said Manning had just gotten his scooter a month ago as he waited for his car to get fixed in the shop.

When asked how she will remember her stepfather, Eating said “loving”.

“Loving. The only Dad I had. Can’t get another one,” said Eating.

A local pastor said these kind of incidents in the area have become a major problem.

“You can run from police, but you can’t run from yourself. Right?,” said Charles Dinkins, senior pastor at Hosanna Community Baptist Church. “So at the end of the day, you’ve got to face yourself and the consequences of your actions. Things like this happen all the time in the community. You become almost immune to it.”

Live video footage captured the victim’s body covered by a yellow tarp near a black BMW that police focused their investigation on. Hours later, a medical examiner was on the scene to transport the body to the medical examiner’s office.

Several blocks were taped off as authorities searched for evidence and the driver who struck the scooter. Evidence markers placed next to debris and personal belongings.

“Preferably the young people or those who were involved will see the need to turn themselves in and turn their life around even,” Dinkins said.

Police have not confirmed nor denied whether the BMW was stolen.

If you have any information on this crime, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
