The security footage shows the moment when, detectives said, 23-year-old Jason Dyer-Mitchell opened fire inside the business located near Northwest 17th Avenue and 54th Street, just after 12:30 a.m., Saturday.

Lorenzo, who works security at the store, spoke with 7News hours later.

“The guy came in, and he started arguing with the owner,” he said.

The video shows Dyer-Mitchell and one of the victims going back and forth for a few seconds. What the altercation was about is unclear.

As one of the gas station owners begins to kick Dyer-Mitchell out of his store, the suspect is seen pulling out and gun and discharging it about nine times, striking both owners and a bystander who was shopping at the store.

“[The gunman] shot [one of the owners] two times and then shot him in the back after he turned around, four more times, and then he shot the other guy three times,” said Lorenzo.

Detectives identified the victims as 51-year-old Shahbaz Hussain and 42-year-old Shamun Shaukat. The owners, affectionately nicknamed “Sunny” and “Moon,” were pronounced dead at the scene.

“He wasn’t just a boss; he was a friend,” sad Lorenzo.

Investigators said the injured bystander managed to crawl out of the store, as strangers rushed to his aid before paramedics arrived and hoisted him into an ambulance.

Dyer-Mitchell appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer on Monday.

“You were arrested for two counts of second-degree murder with prejudice and two counts of second-degree murder with a weapon,” said Glazer.

This is not the suspect’s first run-in with the law. He was arrested in Miami Beach in January 2022 for assaulting a tourist with a nail. He faced charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and other offenses, including several drug charges.

How Dyer-Mitchell got a hold of the gun used in the gas station shooting remains unclear.

Lorenzo shared his grief and remorse for not being there to protect the owners during the shooting.

“I was supposed to have been there to protect them, but I wasn’t there at the time, and that makes me feel bad,” he said.

The Chevron station remains closed. Monday evening, 7News cameras captured Miami Police officers at the scene.

Dyer-Mitchell is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

BSO ID victim, suspect identified in fatal Broward Mass Transit shooting; bodycam video, 911 calls released https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/bso-id-victim-suspect-identified-in-fatal-broward-mass-transit-shooting-bodycam-video-911-calls-released/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 17:19:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1420596 Authorities have released the identities of a victim and suspect involved in a fatal workplace dispute that led to a deputy-involved shooting in Pompano Beach.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene of the shooting near the 3200 block of West Copans Road, at around 11:27 p.m. on Wednesday.

Once deputies arrived, detectives said, they encountered 59-year-old Rafael Molina, armed after fatally shooting his co-worker, 42-year-old Warren Chambers.

Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony addressed reporters about the shootings during a news conference held Friday.

“We see that the individual goes into a locker room of some sort, he changes out his clothes, he’s now in civilian attire, and he’s just basically waiting. What we are referencing is ambush him,” said Tony.

According to BSO, Molina waited for Chambers. When the suspect saw the victim him, he pulled out a gun.

“He removed the firearm from the lunchbox, and then, when the victim comes outside of the room, he executes the victim, firing multiple shots at point blank range, puts the victim down,” said Tony. “We looked at the video footage, and the suspect, as we can see, is formulating, contemplating, further planning about what his next move was going to be.”

On Friday, BSO released body camera footage of the encounter and the 911 calls showing the scared employees as they watched their fellow employee shot, plan, and execute another fellow employee.

“We have gunshots fired at the Broward County Transit Facility,” a dispatcher said on the 911 call.

Employees said they were terrified as the suspect went room to room armed with the gun.

“The employee started shooting?” asked the dispatcher.

“Yeah,” said a person.

“Do you know where he is with the gun now?” asked the dispatcher.

“Oh, no. He’s still in there, he’s still in there, he’s still in there, he’s walking around. He has a white shirt on, khaki pants, he’s walking around here, he’s got the gun in his hands,” said the caller.

Cellphone video showed responding deputies guided in by workers, and that’s when, investigators said, the shooter took aim at the deputies.

At one point, an officer even yelled at the shooter.

“What the [expletive] are you doing?” said the officer.

Detectives described how the incident came to an end.

“We witnessed him pull a hammer out and destroy his cellphone. We witnessed him walk and strategically place himself in an ambush position inside of a bus that was vacant,” said Tony.

Tony said BSO deputies showed up and ran toward the bus. Molina then came out with his gun drawn and started shooting at deputies.

“At some point, he fired at deputies, and deputies returned fire,” said BSO spokesperson Veda Coleman-Wright.

The gunshots could be heard on a cellphone video obtained by 7News.

“It’s a shootout,” a 911 caller said.

“More gunshots going on now,” another caller said.

Molina fired six times. Deputies responded by firing 49 shots back.

Investigators said three BSO deputies opened fire.

Body cam video shows the gun next to the body of the shooter

“He made his mind up that he was going to die that day or kill as many people, including law enforcement. There were over half a dozen-plus officers on the scene that he fired at,” said Tony.

Molina was later pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the gunfire. No officer was injured.

As of Friday, Molina’s motive remains unclear.

BSO deputies are looking into Molina’s shattered cellphone to see if it sheds any light into his motive.

“The victim had no idea this was coming,” said Tony.

Molina was a longtime employee, working for 16 years in the transit facility. The victim had been with the facility for almost six years.

Both the suspect and the victim were mechanics.

The incident occurred at the end of their shift on Wednesday night. Chambers was clocking out when he was shot at.

The victim’s family is now grappling with the violent lost of their loved one.

The shooting is currently under investigation by BSO’s Crime Scene, Homicide and Internal Affairs units, along with FDLE.

The three deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, following BSO policy, pending further investigation.

Suspect arrested months after North Miami-Dade liquor store shooting; victim speaks out https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/suspect-arrested-months-after-north-miami-dade-liquor-store-shooting-victim-speaks-out/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 17:23:05 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1418138 A man who, police said, shot a liquor store employee in North Miami-Dade has been arrested months after the incident.

Miami-Dade Police held a press conference Friday morning announcing the arrest of 34-year-old Norman Wright.

On hand at the news conference was the victim, Emmanuel Taylor. He shared his thoughts with the media for the first time since the ordeal.

“Seventy-one years young. No, I’m feeling pretty good,” he said.

The shooting occurred on Dec. 7 at Jensen’s Liquors, located on North Miami Avenue, just north of 79th Street.

According to investigators, Wright walked into the business just before 6 p.m. and demanded some sort of refund for merchandise he was returning.

When Taylor denied the refund, Wright allegedly grabbed a liquor bottle and tried to leave the store.

That is when Taylor stepped from behind the counter and approached Wright. Police said a struggle ensued between the two men inside the store, and moments later, it spilled into the parking lot of the business.

Security footage captured Wright as he fell. When he hit the ground, the video showed the flash from the firearm.

“There are so many guns out there on the street that, you know, anybody can get shot anywhere, at anytime, you know?” Taylor said. “Doesn’t matter where I am, you know? Or who I am.”

Taylor said he spent more than two months in the hospital.

“The funny thing was that I wasn’t in a lot of pain, no,” Taylor said. “I was in a lot of discomfort, only because I was in the hospital, I was intubated for like three weeks, but other than that, I was fine. Not a lot of pain.”

Detectives told 7News that they found Wright from a trail of evidence that he left behind at the crime scene.

Late Friday morning, Wright appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer. He was charged with armed robbery and attempted murder.

“I’m going to grant the state’s motion for pretrial detention and hold you with no bond,” said Glazer.

As for Taylor, he keeps a smile on his face and his head high, knowing that Wright is behind bars.

“Ecstatic. I’m happy that he got arrested because he could be doing it to somebody else,” he said. “We’ve got to get these people off the street.”

Wright has a previous criminal history that includes possession of cannabis and resisting an officer without violence. He remains at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade.

2 manatees return to SeaWorld Orlando after brief stint at Zoo Miami https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/2-manatees-return-to-seaworld-orlando-after-brief-stint-at-zoo-miami/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 21:03:30 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1410436 Two young female manatees have returned to Orlando after spending just under a month at Zoo Miami.

The move to Zoo Miami back in January aimed to help with overcrowding at manatee critical care facilities such as Zoo Tampa, Zoo Jacksonville, and SeaWorld Orlando.

Zoo Miami, well-equipped with experienced staff and volunteers, worked to ensure the manatees’ readiness for release, though they fell short on predetermined measurements and a vet exam.

However, space opened up in SeaWorld in Orlando as several manatees were released this week, providing the two females with the opportunity to continue their journey toward a release back into the wild.

In a statement, Zoo Miami expressed its ongoing dedication to the conservation of animals.

“We will continue to aid and support manatee rehabilitation and release as a part of the MRP. Zoo Miami is committed to conservation of animals in South Florida and across the globe.”

Memorial Healthcare System launches “One City at a Time” program in Hollywood https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/memorial-healthcare-system-launches-one-city-at-a-time-program-in-hollywood/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 20:48:02 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1406507 Memorial Healthcare System successfully launched its “One City at a Time” program in Hollywood, aimed at bringing health resources and services to underserved communities.

The system’s first event took place Saturday at the Washington Park Community Center at 5199 Pembroke Road and included lunch, raffles, a job fair and activities for kids.

The program offers uninsured or underinsured residents free access to medical exams, screenings, vaccinations, nutritional counseling, Medicaid eligibility information, insurance enrollment guidance, referrals to social services and specialists, and primary care physicians.

For those who were unable to attend the event, Memorial’s mobile health center will be in the community three days a week for the next three months.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesdays (9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.) – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center (2400 Charleston Street)
  • Wednesdays (10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.) – Boulevard Heights Community Center (6770 Garfield Street)
  • Thursdays (9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.) – Washington Park Community Center (5199 Pembroke Road)

The “One City at a Time” program, part of Memorial Primary Care’s proactive health commitment, aims to enhance community health by eliminating barriers to care and facilitating easy access to resources.

Hollywood is the third city in south Broward where Memorial has introduced the program in the last eight months, following Hallandale Beach and Dania Beach.

This initiative, officials say, aligns with Memorial’s dedication to preventing and effectively treating chronic conditions before they escalate into crises for individuals and their families.

18-year-old arrested, charged after allegedly bringing loaded handgun to Stranahan High School https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/18-year-old-arrested-charged-after-allegedly-bringing-loaded-handgun-to-stranahan-high-school/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 19:32:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1404974 Police have arrested a young man after, they said, he brought a loaded gun to Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police, 18-year-old Jamar Ross was located and taken into custody, and the weapon was recovered, Friday afternoon.

Detectives said officers were following a tip from school security that a student had a gun on campus.

The campus, located at 1800 SW 5th Place, was placed on lockdown not long before classes were scheduled to be dismissed, as officers began searching the premises.

Parents were worried as the news of the student with a gun spread.

“Kids can’t get an education these days. You gotta worry about them getting killed in school,” said one concerned parent.

“Oh, my God. I can’t. It’s terrible,” said another parent.

“I’m kinda nervous because I can’t get my child,” said one parent.

“Gun violence has tripled, so they need to change the gun laws, and we wouldn’t have this problem with teenagers with guns,” said one parent.

“As far as I know, he didn’t do any threats, but apparently, they found out he had a gun, so that’s all we know. But once they found out, they put everyone on lockdown,” said Mischa Griffin.

Students said that while the situation is nerve-racking, it’s something they’ve become used to.

“They turn off all the lights and told us to stay away from the windows and to duck down behind all the bookshelves,” said Julio Zarco.

“It was one weapon. Police are already here. For how many security already on campus, taking one person down probably shouldn’t be a hassle,” said Lily Leiper.

Students received several messages, including one asking, “Anyone know why 30 cops cars are at Stranahan High School today?”

“Like this could be my last time actually, like, alive,” said Ethin Rodriguez.

Griffin’s daughter said students were told to hide.

“I was going to another classroom and when I walked into the building, they told me to go to the bathroom,” said the daughter.

She said she stayed in the bathroom for 40 minutes.

Dismissal resumed as normal. No injuries were reported.

Ross has been charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and disrupting a school function.

The suspect’s motive remains unclear. This is an open and ongoing investigation.

Student hospitalized after being stabbed at North Miami Beach Senior High School, police say https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/student-hospitalized-after-being-stabbed-at-north-miami-beach-senior-high-school-police-say/ Thu, 25 Jan 2024 19:52:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1404538 Rescue crews airlifted a student to the hospital after, police said, he was stabbed at a high school in North Miami Beach.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units arrived at North Miami Beach Senior High School, located at 1247 NE 167th St., Thursday afternoon.

“Respond to North Miami Beach Senior … it’s going to be in reference to a juvenile with a stab wound to the rib area,” said a dispatcher on radio transmissions.

According to officials, the victim suffered traumatic injuries and was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center.

“During that altercation, one of the students removed some kind of sharp object. We don’t know exactly what that sharp object is; it has not been recovered,” said Miami-Dade Schools Police Deputy Chief Carlos Fernandez.

Officials with Miami-Dade County Public Schools said the incident was an isolated altercation. They provided the following statement:

Earlier this afternoon, a student was transported to a nearby hospital for his injuries sustained during an isolated altercation. As a precaution, North Miami Beach Senior High School is currently on a secure, and a controlled dismissal is underway. Miami-Dade Schools Police is currently investigating the incident and additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

M-DCPS

Students and parents spoke to 7News about the incident.

“So far, I know is that the kids called me when I was at work, and they were like, ‘Mom, somebody got stabbed, and they got into a fight,'” said parent Yajaira Rojas.

Rojas said she quickly went to the school to pick up her children once she heard about the situation.

“I felt really scared, like, I just wanted to go home,” said Bianca Deer, a student. “It was basically saying that a kid got stabbed, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, that was crazy.'”

Deer said she doesn’t know the students involved, but once she saw students running, she went to hide herself.

“I went, and I was in the room with my cheer brother and sisters and my coach,” said Deer.

Police said the victim and the subject agreed to meet at the bleachers around lunchtime. It was sometime after that they had their fight.

“It happened at a basketball court. A bunch of people were around,” said student Anthony Pavon.

Students said the school went into a lockdown. When asked whether he was surprised to hear about the stabbing, Pavon replied, “No, not really.”

As a result of the incident, M-DCPS officials said, the students were released through a secure, controlled dismissal.

Rojas said she hopes police find who stabbed the student.

“Hopefully everything gets resolved and they find who did this,” she said.

Police said the student who was stabbed is expected to be OK. He is in stable condition. His age and grade have not been released.

“We have some information on who the subject may be, and we continue to work the case,” said Fernandez.

As of late Thursday night, police were still looking for the person who injured the student and the weapon. They hope he’ll turn himself in.

Mother gives birth to baby girl while in Lyft ride under I-95 overpass in North Miami — with help from cousin https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/mother-gives-birth-to-baby-girl-while-in-lyft-ride-under-i-95-overpass-in-north-miami/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 23:22:23 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1404153 A baby girl gave new meaning to “rush hour” after a mother gave birth inside a rideshare vehicle underneath Interstate 95 in North Miami, with help from her cousin and her Lyft driver.

North Miami Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units arrived underneath the overpass on Northwest 135th Street just before 5 p.m., Wednesday.

The mother began going into labor at home and called a Lyft driver. She told the motorist to book it and take her to the hospital.

“So she just said, ‘Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!'” said the driver.

At some point during the ride, the mother called her cousin, Cherley Zamor.

“She was screaming ’cause, I guess, the baby was coming,” said Zamor.

Zamor said got in her car to race to race behind the Lyft SUV carrying her pregnant cousin.

“And I followed,” said Zamor.

At some point, the Lyft driver said, he knew they wouldn’t make it to the hospital, so he pulled over right under I-95.

When asked whether anybody had ever delivered a baby in his vehicle whole working for Lyft, the driver replied, “It’s the first time.”

Zamor pulled up under the overpass moments later and got jumped into the backseat of the rideshare SUV.

“She was just screaming, ‘Ow, it hurts!’ That’s it,” said Zamor.

Zamor said she called 911 and helped deliver her cousin’s baby.

“And told her to push. That’s the only thing I could do, ’cause the head was already out,” she said, “so she pushed, the baby came out, I picked her up, tapped her on the butt, wrapped her in the towel and waited for the cops.”

Once officials arrived, they were able to transport both the mother and her newborn daughter to Jackson North Medical Center.

Zamor said she was grateful for the added help, even though she and the Lyft driver did the heavy lifting.

“He was very helpful. We’re thankful for him,” she said. “Lyft should tip him and reward him.”

Officials said there were no problems during transport to the hospital, and both patients are doing well.

“We’re happy. It’s a healthy baby girl. She’s in health; that’s all that matters,” said Zamor. “I’m proud of myself.”

Newly obtained video shows social media influencer charged in boyfriend’s murder hitting him in Colorado https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/newly-obtained-video-shows-social-media-influencer-charged-in-boyfriends-murder-hitting-him-in-colorado/ Fri, 12 Jan 2024 01:00:36 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1399555 Newly surfaced cellphone video shows a confrontation between an online model and her boyfriend months before, prosecutors say, she fatally stabbed him at their luxury Miami condo.

The footage shows murder suspect and former OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney arguing with boyfriend Christian Obumseli while the two were in Aspen, Colorado, in 2022.

The video appears to show Clenney accusing Obumseli of infidelity while repeatedly attacking him as he attempts to fend her off.

“I was [expletive] sober for two weeks, two weeks!” she yelled at him as she hit him repeatedly. “And now, why am I not sober? ‘Cause of you!”

The video is the latest showing the suspect striking the eventual victim prior to his April 3, 2022 murder.

“You’re hindering my progress!” Clenney said in the video as she punched Obumseli.

Police said Clenney stabbed her boyfriend inside the One Paraiso high-rise along the 3100 block of Northeast Seventh Avenue.

“My boyfriend is dying of a stab wound,” Clenney told a 911 dispatcher.

“Ma’am, what is the address?” said the dispatcher.

Clenney is currently in jail awaiting trail.

Investigators said Obumseli died from his wound. He was 27 years old.

The latest footage of in-camera roughhousing was obtained by 7News following a public records request with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.

“Yes, I’m not mad at you!” Clenney said in the video as she hit Obumseli again.

Investigators said the altercation took place while the couple were on a trip involving photo shoots to generate content for Clenney’s online brand.

This video isn’t the only evidence of a violent relationship prior to the killing.

In February of 2022, surveillance video showed Clenney pushing and hitting Obumseli and pulling on his hair in her condo’s elevator. Less than two months later, police said, she knifed her lover to death.

Clenney and her defense team said the stabbing was an act of self-defense.

“She was in a struggle for her life. She defended herself; he came at her,” said Frank Prieto, Clenney’s attorney.

But state prosecutors call it cold-blooded murder.

“An extremely tempestuous and combative relationship,” said Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle.

So does Kim Wald, an attorney representing the Obumseli family. In response to the videos, Wald filed a civil complaint against multiple parties connected to Obumseli’s death.

“When you look at these videos, you look at this behavior, you look at all of these instances where she was committing crimes, it’s really just – there’s no words for it,” said Wald. “That’s why you have this civil lawsuit, to stop this history of domestic violence, to bring awareness to domestic violence and to hold people accountable.”

Clenney has been charged with murder. Her case remains open and pending.

Alleged Shakira stalking suspect appears in court after disturbing social media posts https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/alleged-shakira-stalking-suspect-arrested-outside-her-miami-beach-home-after-disturbing-social-media-posts/ Mon, 08 Jan 2024 23:14:16 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1398239 A Texas man, that was arrested for allegedly stalking pop star Shakira following a series of alarming social media posts appeared in court on Tuesday.

Fifty-six-year-old Daniel John Valtier of El Paso, Texas was arrested Monday morning outside of the pop star’s home.

According to the arrest report, Shakira’s security had been made aware of Valtier following social media posts and deliveries made to her home between late December and the start of 2024.

In Valtier’s posts, he falsely claimed a relationship with the pop star, including that the two were married and had a family.

The false claim was repeated by Valtier in court in front of the judge.

“There will be absolutely no contact with this individual at any time except for required court appearances,” the judge said.

“I didn’t agree,” responded Valtier.

“Do you understand?” asked the judge.

“She’s my wife. I speak to her all the time,” said Valtier

“No. sir, no sir. She is not your wife, she is not your wife, ok,” the judge said.

The judge said Valtier was a threat to public safety and to Shakira and ordered him to stay away from her.

Despite Shakira and her team issuing several warnings to Valtier, he continued, police said, sending her packages containing wine bottles, chocolates and toys directly to her home.

On Wednesday, police said, Shakira’s security team shared with them a social media post that appeared to indicate Valtier was in Florida intending to visit her home. The post sparked concerns since he had been living in El Paso.

As a result, on Monday, when Valtier arrived outside Shakira’s home via taxi cab, he was arrested by Miami Beach Police.

Police said Valtier doesn’t know the victim or any member of their family.

Valtier faces charges of stalking. The judge raised his bond to $100,000.

South Florida gears up to honor injured veterans in 20th Annual Soldier Ride https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/south-florida-gears-up-to-honor-injured-veterans-in-20th-annual-soldier-ride/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 19:51:48 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1396943 The South Florida community is honoring over 40 injured veterans, including current patients at Walter Reed Medical Center, during this year’s Miami-Key West Soldier Ride.

The annual Wounded Warrior Project event began Thursday and will run through the weekend, marking its 20th year.

The event began when a lone cyclist took the 5,000-mile coast-to-coast journey to recognize post-9/11 injured veterans, giving rise to Soldier Ride.

Army veteran Jacob Norotsky was serving in Iraq back in 2007 when the helicopter he was in was attacked. He now suffers from PTSD as a result.

“It just felt like every hill we went just got better and better and all the guys and girls around me just overcoming and you could just hear the camaraderie getting better by the moment,” said Norotsky.

Soldier Ride has evolved over two decades, bringing large groups of injured veterans to cities across America.

Focused on fostering strong social connections, the program addresses mental and physical service-related challenges, enhancing stress, anxiety, and depression management while reducing suicide risk.

“You lose that uniform, you lose that sense of purpose and identity but what Wounded Warrior Project does is puts together events like this to create that sense of camaraderie again. That sense of team, that sense of challenge. It brings you around with your brothers and sisters.” said James Herrera with the Wounded Warrior Project.

Soldier Ride not only provides support but also allows the community to celebrate often overlooked wounded warriors as they cycle through local streets.

“With Soldier Ride, no one ever rides alone. We ride together as a unit just like they did during their service time,” said Herrera.

Thursday’s section of the ride began in Miami Beach and ended at LoanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins. The ride will continue down towards Key West over the Seven Mile Bridge on Friday. The group will rest on Saturday and end the event on Sunday with a trip to the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon.

“It’s just so amazing that so many people come from so many places all over the country, and it’s like we’ve been best friends our entire lives and just that instant bond of being back with brothers and sisters again. It’s just an amazing ride,” said Norotsky.

Man dead, woman ‘expected to survive’ after helicopter crashes into SW Miami-Dade canal, police say https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/man-dead-woman-expected-to-survive-after-helicopter-crashes-into-sw-miami-dade-canal-police-say/ Wed, 27 Dec 2023 19:16:13 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1394709 A man has died and a woman was rescued after the helicopter they were in crashed into a canal in Southwest Miami-Dade, police said.

According to Miami-Dade Police, the helicopter crashed with two people on board near Southwest 184th Avenue and 120th Street, just before 1:10 p.m., Wednesday. Several calls to 911 ensued.

“According to investigators, the witnesses were stating they saw what appeared to be a helicopter that was spinning and falling,” said MDPD Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

More than 10 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units were called to the waterway to find the helicopter completely submerged. Some searched by air, and divers went into the water.

Moments later, police said, witnesses watched the woman come out of the water. She told first responders there was still a male in the helicopter.

Divers were able to locate the man and pull him out of the water.

Paramedics transported both victims to Jackson South Medical Center by ground.

“Unfortunately, the male succumbed to his injuries. The female is expected to survive,” said Zabaleta.

As of Wednesday night, police said, the woman is in stable condition.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration said the helicopter is a Hughes 369 aircraft.

Police said the helicopter took off from Fort Myers and was en route to Miami Executive Airport when something went terribly wrong.

Area resident Vivian Alvarez said she saw the immediate aftermath of the crash.

“We saw a chopper very low, very low, and actually, directly, right behind where it happened,” she said.

Shortly after, Alvarez said, she noticed more choppers.

“Soon thereafter, there were like five helicopters,” she said.

It is unclear what led to the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board has taken over the investigation to determine who was flying the helicopter and who was navigating it.

MDPD is handling the death investigation.

Detectives have not confirmed how the victims are related, and they said NTSB officials are expected to identify the pilot.

“It’s pretty scary that something like that happened around here,” said Alvarez. “It’s shocking.”

It will take some time for crews to lift the helicopter out of the canal.

Miami Heat to retire Udonis Haslem’s No. 40 jersey in ceremony https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-heat-to-retire-udonis-haslems-no-40-jersey-in-ceremony/ Fri, 22 Dec 2023 21:16:17 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1393766 The Miami Heat announced Friday the retirement of Udonis Haslem’s No. 40 jersey in a ceremony scheduled for next month during halftime of their matchup against the Atlanta Hawks.

Haslem, a pivotal figure in the team’s history, will join an elite group of Heat players on Jan 19, including Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade, as the sixth player to have his jersey retired.

The organization said the decision to retire Haslem’s jersey reflects his remarkable 20-year career with the Heat, culminating in three NBA Championships, seven Eastern Conference Championships, and 12 Divisional Titles.

“It’s about a great legacy, a thank you moment that has been earned over 20 years of being an incredible championship player and most importantly, the best leader,” said Heat President Pat Riley. “He’s going to have his day and I can’t wait to see his jersey hang in the rafters.”

Haslem, who retired last season, made history as one of only three players in NBA history to play two decades with one franchise, joining the ranks of Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki.

As a 16-time captain, Haslem is the franchise’s all-time leader in offensive, defensive, and total rebounds. His 5,791 boards rank fourth among undrafted players in the modern draft era (1966).

In addition to his rebounding prowess, Haslem holds impressive rankings among the Heat’s all-time leaders, including second in games played, starts, and minutes. He is fifth in field goals made, seventh in points, ninth in field goal percentage, and 10th in blocks.

Among postseason leaders, Haslem ranks first in offensive rebounds, second in total rebounds, and games played, showcasing his impact on and off the court.

Haslem’s new role is as a resource to the coaching staff, a mentor to both Heat and Skyforce players and a representative of the organization in the community and business endeavors.

Miami Lakes woman facing felony charges for role in Jan. 6 Capitol riot https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/miami-lakes-woman-facing-felony-charges-for-role-in-jan-6-capitol-riot/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 17:40:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1392351 A Miami Lakes resident is facing felony charges for her alleged role in the January 6 Capitol riot, where she entered the building just minutes after the initial breach, according to court documents.

Barbara Balmaseda, 23, was arrested on Thursday on felony and misdemeanor charges connected to her involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol. The charges include obstruction of an official proceeding, entering a restricted building, disorderly conduct, and parading in a Capitol building.

Balmaseda allegedly traveled from Florida to Washington, D.C. to protest the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Court documents revealed she exchanged messages expressing her belief in election theft and knowledge about the certification process.

According to court documents, Balmaseda was captured on U.S. Capitol Police CCTV allegedly entering the Capitol via the Senate Wing door, just four minutes after the initial breach.

Inside the Capitol, she allegedly joined a mob confronting police in the Crypt, eventually moving into the Rotunda. Balmaseda exited the area, re-entered, and stood nearby as rioters attempted to breach an officer line. Law enforcement officers received additional support at 3:11 p.m., corralling rioters, including Balmaseda, towards the nearest exit.

Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade canceled due to inclement weather https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/seminole-hard-rock-winterfest-boat-parade-canceled-due-to-inclement-weather/ Fri, 15 Dec 2023 17:01:40 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1391277 In an unexpected turn of events, the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade, hailed as the “Best Show on H2O,” has been canceled this year due to inclement weather.

The annual event in Fort Lauderdale, known as the traditional kickoff to the South Florida Holiday Season, brings together the community and draws visitors from around the world.

Organizers decided to cancel this year’s parade in the interest of safety as adverse weather conditions pose potential risks to participants and spectators.

“After dedicating 12 months of hard work, it’s with profound sadness and disappointment that we have decided to cancel the 2023 Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade,” said Lisa-Scott-Founds, WinterFest president and CEO. “Our decision to cancel the event was based on reports by the National Weather Service, which suggests perilous conditions exist that may threaten both the safety of boaters and spectators.”

South Florida has been hit by wild winds and rounds of rain that are expected to continue into the weekend.

The inclement weather is expected to dominate forecasts throughout mid-December.

https://twitter.com/FTLCityNews/status/1735320403373891766?s=20
https://twitter.com/VivianGonzalez7/status/1735672861593899272?s=20

In its 52 years, only COVID-19 has forced the seventh largest parade in the world to cancel.

Officials said that the weather made it too risky for the event to proceed.

“With the high rises and the wind gusts approaching 45 mph, there’s just a recipe for a disaster putting any boats on the water in,” said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan. “These conditions would be nothing short of reckless.”

For Willie Urbitta, he had his 82-foot yacht decorated and ready to go.

The weather has been so bad that he couldn’t even turn it around on Thursday.

“I see the weather report, the weather is not changing,” Urbitta said. “It’s sad, but it’s safety first.”

The Historic Downtowner, located at 10 S. New River Dr E, had 150 tables reserved for people to eat and watch the parade float along the river. Now, workers spent the day on the phone letting people know that it’s not happening.

“It’s a huge disappointment, but we know that WinterFest does a phenomenal job of trying to coordinate this every year,” said John Conlon, manager at The Historic Downtowner.

The conditions on Friday were not the kind of weather anyone expected in December.

Beaches were empty and flood barriers were put in place to protect boarded up businesses that are usually filled with holiday crowds.

The one-of-a-kind parade showcases a display of beautifully decorated boats of all sizes along a 12-mile route. Organizers have said that the parade brings in over a million viewers in attendance and an economic impact of over $50 million to Broward County.

Coral Springs man appears before judge for alleged vandalism of pro-Israel sign at Miami Beach cafe https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/coral-springs-man-appears-before-judge-for-alleged-vandalism-of-pro-israel-sign-at-miami-beach-cafe/ Thu, 07 Dec 2023 22:34:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1388924 A Broward County resident is in legal jeopardy after being charged with criminal mischief with prejudice for allegedly slashing an Israeli sign outside Bagel Time Cafe.

On Thursday, 24-year-old Nour Abaido from Coral Springs, faced questioning in Miami-Dade County.

Abaido, who had previously posted bond, received a stern warning during the proceedings.

“You already posted a bond, just stay away from the Bagel Time Cafe,” said Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer.

The charges stem from an incident on October 28th around 1:30 a.m. at the Bagel Time Cafe on Alton Road and West 41st Street in Miami Beach. Surveillance footage appeared to capture Abaido exiting a Mustang and vandalizing an Israel flag sign outside the cafe.

Miami Beach police were able to use the video to identify and apprehend Abaido. After being booked in Broward, he posted bail, only to return to jail in Miami-Dade this week.

During his court appearance, Abaido was told that he would be placed under house arrest.

“I was told I was going to get an ankle monitor, and then I’m going to be sent home,” he stated.

Abaido is now confined to his home under a total lockdown, with a work exception, while awaiting his upcoming court date.

Rapper Kodak Black faces cocaine charges after latest arrest in Plantation https://wsvn.com/entertainment/rapper-kodak-black-faces-cocaine-charges-after-latest-arrest-in-plantation/ Thu, 07 Dec 2023 17:26:17 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1388818 Rapper Kodak Black, also known as Bill Kapri, finds himself behind bars once again following an arrest in Plantation Wednesday on charges of possession of cocaine, tampering with physical evidence and improperly stopping or parking his vehicle.

Black appeared before a judge Thursday afternoon.

According to a police report, Plantation Police officers spotted a black Bentley SUV holding up traffic around 2:07 a.m. in the 600 block of NW 47th Terrace.

Officers, upon approaching the vehicle, found Kapri asleep at the wheel and the driver-side window partially down. A strong odor of burnt cannabis came from the vehicle, and cannabis wrapping paper and residue were found throughout the exposed center console, the report states.

Upon questioning, Black admitted, according to police, to having “weed” in the car.

As officers reviewed license and vehicle information, they noticed white powder falling from Black in an attempt to throw away illegal narcotics, police said.

A search also revealed a clear plastic baggie with a white chunky substance in Black’s pocket. Field tests confirmed the substance as cocaine.

Police said Black’s vehicle also showed signs of recent damage, indicating it was previously involved in a crash.

This is not the first encounter with the law for the rapper, who was most recently arrested in July 2022 in Fort Lauderdale.

During that incident, Florida Highway Patrol pulled him over for driving a purple SUV with window tints exceeding the legal limit.

Troopers detected a marijuana smell and then searched the SUV and found a small clear bag with 31 white tablets and almost $75,000 in cash. The tablets were later identified as oxycodone.

Officials also said record checks revealed that Black’s vehicle tag and driver’s license were both expired at the time.

Earlier this year, a warrant for his arrest was issued after authorities said he failed to appear for a drug test.

In January 2020, then-President Donald Trump commuted a three-year federal prison sentence the rapper received for falsifying documents used to purchase weapons. At that time, Black had served approximately half of his sentence.

Black was ordered held on a $5,000 bail. He has since bonded out of jail.

Conditions of his pre-trial release include random drug tests and a mandatory substance abuse evaluation.

Manatee rescue team transports trio from Miami Seaquarium to care centers across Florida https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/manatee-rescue-team-transports-trio-from-miami-seaquarium-to-care-centers-across-florida/ Tue, 05 Dec 2023 23:59:48 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1388174 Three elderly manatees, including two named Romeo and Juliet, were successfully transported to two of the nation’s three critical care centers for manatees from Miami Seaquarium, addressing concerns about their advanced age and health conditions.

The Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Tuesday that Romeo and Juliet, both over 65 years old, are now at ZooTampa, while Clarity is at Seaworld Orlando.

“We are very excited to have our new residents at the zoo,” Dr. Cynthia Stringfield, senior vice president of  Animal Health, Conservation and Education at ZooTampa.

For Romeo and Juliet, the trek for those two took five hours. Romeo weighs more than 2,00 pounds and Juliet weighs more than 3,000 pounds.

The manatees are undergoing comprehensive medical evaluations at their respective facilities

The operation involved specialized transport vehicles and a team of experts due to the manatees’ age and health conditions.

“ZooTampa has taken ownership of them because they had some longstanding health concerns and things like that,” Stringfield said. “And we specialize in that and felt like we could give them a good home and give them some good, excellent medical care.”

The transport of these manatees comes to the relief of activists like Phil Demers.

“We are looking forward to seeing how well they are thriving there,” he said.

Romeo and Juliet had been at the Miami Seaquarium since the 1950s and were moved to improve their social environment.

Demers took video of the manatees at their old home, and was highly critical of the conditions they were kept in and pushed for the relocation effort.

“These types of wins for activists are rare, they’re few and far between, but this one, in light of Lolita’s death, is very sweet.

Lolita the Killer Whale, who lived at the Seaquarium for decade, died in October before she could make her planned return to open waters.

Officials with the Miami Seaquarium said they arrived at their facility before the enactment of the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Clarity, a female who was rescued back in 2009 with watercraft-related injuries, will be temporarily cared for at SeaWorld Orlando until a group of MRP experts can determine the best placement for her at another facility.

Now, with Clarity, Romeo and Juliet making the trek to a new home, caretakers said that they are where they belong.

“They came out of the stretcher no problem, cruised around and checked out their new surroundings,” Stringfield said.

ZooTampa said that they are going to give Romeo and Juliet medical care that they need and will eventually move them to another facility, which will create an opening for injured manatees from the wild.

The injured manatees will be rehabilitated at ZooTampa and will be released back into the wild.

Grand jury to review 2019 UPS hijacking and fatal shootout in Miramar https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/grand-jury-to-review-2019-ups-hijacking-and-fatal-shootout-in-miramar/ Tue, 05 Dec 2023 23:16:05 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1388101 7News has learned that Broward prosecutors are set to present the 2019 UPS hijacking fatal shooting investigation to a grand jury early next year.

The grand jury will carefully examine the facts of the case, including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement report, to determine the appropriate course of action.

The investigation stems from a harrowing officer-involved shootout in Miramar in 2019, resulting in multiple fatalities, including UPS truck driver, 27-year-old Frank Ordonez.

Following a 30-mile chase into Miramar and a botched robbery at Regent Jewelers on Miracle Mile, authorities said two robbers kidnapped Ordonez prior to the deadly encounter on Miramar Parkway.

In the aftermath of the shootout, then Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez, who has since retired, commented on the incident.

“If the subject wouldn’t have shot, no shots would have rung. None would have gone out. My understanding is that [the suspects] shot first,” Perez said in an interview with 7News.

Speaking with 7News back in June after seeing never-before-seen police dashcam video of the incident, Ordonez’s brother expressed his anger and anguish over the shooting.

“His daughters don’t get to grow up with a father now,” said Roy Ordonez as he broke down in tears.

The tragic incident claimed the lives of not only Ordonez but also the two robbers, both ex-convicts in their 40s, and 70-year-old Richard Cutshaw, an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire while driving.

As the fourth-anniversary approaches, the community is gathering Tuesday evening to remember the lives lost.

The Broward State Attorney’s Office released a statement to 7News that reads:

“Today marks the 4-year anniversary of the tragic deaths of two innocent civilians in our county. Our office is committed to a thorough investigation of the matter with justice and integrity at the forefront. Although we are unable to discuss the details of the ongoing investigation, please know that our hearts and minds are on the victims, their families, and all of those who have been affected by this horrible event.”

Harold F. Pryor. Broward State Attorney

A Vigil for Ordonez was held Tuesday night.

“Every day, every day, every day, it’s hard for me and my family,” said Lucy Abolinario, Ordonez’s mother.

It’s a day a family remembers as they gathered for the fourth anniversary when innocents lives were lost during the hijacking of the UPS truck.

“We’re pouring our hearts out here with the pain we’re going through,” said Sara Ordonez, Frank’s sister.

“We’re just trying to pick up the piece,” said Carlos Felipe, Frank’s brother. “To this day we’re still trying to pick up the pieces.”

7News cameras captured Ordonez’s family placing balloons and lighting candles during his vigil.

“We’re pouring our hearts out here with the pain we’re going through,” Sara said.

The investigation was initially handled by the FDLE, which has taken four years and it something that took too long for the still grieving family.

“Finally after four years, we’re waiting for the right time for them to make the right decision,” Carlos Felipe said.

“We loved him a lot, it was really really hard to lose him,” said Genevie Merino, Ordonez’s sister.

Loved ones also mourned 70-year-old Richard Cutshaw, an innocent man who was driving in his car when he was caught in the crossfire.

“Everybody put your hand on your heart,” Abolinario said.

Family members of the late Ordonez told 7News that they haven’t spoken to anybody from the State Attorney’s Office in Broward County for about a year-and-a-half. They hope that changes soon.

Police pursuit of stolen van on I-95 ends in arrest on SR-112 in Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/police-pursuit-of-stolen-van-on-i-95-ends-in-arrest-on-sr-112-in-miami-dade/ Tue, 05 Dec 2023 19:36:12 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1388087 A police pursuit of a stolen van that began on the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Miami Gardens ended with the arrest of a subject accused of committing sexual battery.

Before leading police on a chase, the subject, later identified as Jose Carlos Blanquicett, allegedly left a hotel after he had a dispute with another person. He then stole a van from a Toyota dealership in North Miami.

“The subject had an altercation with someone and he ran out of the hotel,” said Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Joe Sanchez. “He was able to run to a Toyota dealership, where he stole a vehicle that had the keys in it.”

7Skyforce followed above the van as Blanquicett swerved through traffic.

According to FHP officials, troopers initially attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the stolen Ford cargo van on I-95 in the area of Northwest 69th Street. The vehicle failed to stop and fled.

The van, speeding in and out of traffic, forced authorities to conduct multiple PIT maneuvers, all of which were unsuccessful.

At one point, Blanquicett struck a trooper’s cruiser before continuing on his escape.

Blanquicett abandoned the van on the ramp onto State Road 112 West and began running the on-ramp on foot. Around 2:15 p.m., he raised his hands and surrendered to officers.

“The good thing is there were no injuries and the subject was arrested, and he’s being charged with the stolen vehicle, he’s being charged with reckless driving, assault and battery on a police officer,” Sanchez said.

The van has since been towed away and traffic on the highway continued to flow.

On Wednesday morning, Florida Highway Patrol officials released the charges of his arrest; he now faces charges of grand theft, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, battery on a law enforcement officer, and sexual battery.

Miami-Dade Police said the sexual battery occurred outside of a mental health facility before he ran off.

Suspected illegal narcotics were in plain view in the vehicle.

After a search, Ferguson was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of Adderall without a prescription.

Coral Springs man arrested in connection to slashing of pro-Israel sign in Miami Beach, sources say https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/coral-springs-man-arrested-in-connection-to-slashing-of-pro-israel-sign-in-miami-beach-sources-say/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 21:07:13 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1387037 The man who, police said, is responsible for slashing an Israeli flag sign outside Bagel Time Cafe in Miami Beach has been arrested.

Nour Abaido from Coral Springs was arrested Friday in Broward County. The 24-year-old faces charges of criminal mischief with prejudice, among other offenses.

https://twitter.com/fox_sheldon/status/1730683069345018148?s=20

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 28 and was captured by surveillance cameras outside the cafe at 41st and Alton Road.

The targeted sign read “Bagel Time Proudly Stands with Israel.”

The surveillance video showed Abaido allegedly arrive in front of the cafe in a yellow Mustang and head straight for the sign. He is then seen allegedly slashing the sign before fleeing the scene.

Speaking with 7News on Friday, Bagel Time Cafe owner Josh Nodel commended police for their diligence in their search for the suspect.

“First of all, I’ve got to give [credit] to the police officers of Miami Beach,” he said.

Abaido’s arrest comes brings a sigh of relief to the cafe owner.

Exactly one month after the act of vandalism, the cafe was targeted by another vandal.

Surveillance footage captured a woman, her face concealed, hopping out of a white BMW SUV and tearing down signs supporting Israel and the United States around 12:30 a.m., Tuesday.

The security cameras documented the woman throwing the banners, throwing them in the middle of the street and stomping on them.

Nodel said he hopes police are also able to locate this woman

“They say that [the surveillance video] is very good evidence for them to be able to continue the case,” he said.

The subject in the second incident has not been identified.

Abaido is being held at the Broward County Jail on a $25,000 bond.

Father outraged after he says daughter ate THC-infused candy at Miami Gardens elementary school https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/father-outraged-after-he-says-daughter-ate-thc-infused-candy-at-miami-gardens-elementary-school/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 21:40:02 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1386184 A father is seeking answers after, he said, his 9-year-old daughter became sick after consuming candy infused with THC at her school in Miami Gardens.

Chaunic Symonette said the incident occurred on Tuesday at Bunche Park Elementary School.

“Six hundred milligrams of THC. Absolutely it was a lot,” he said.

Symonette told 7News that his daughter and two other classmates ate the substance.

“She was not stable. I’m asking her certain questions, she don’t know her birthday, she’s not aware, doesn’t know where she’s at,” he said. “She was standing up, she was real woozy. Very fatigued, shaky, jittery. Pretty much just not in her right state of mind.”

After picking up his daughter from school, Symonette said he was told a fifth-grade student handed out the THC-infused candy.

“She had the candy, and she said that all the kids were sick, that the candy was making them feel sick,” Symonette said. “So I just sat down and was like, ‘Hey, let me look at the candy wrapper’ and see what kind of candy it was, and that’s when I found out what kind of candy it was.”

Acting quickly, he rushed his daughter to the hospital, where she tested positive for marijuana in her system.

Symonette said he promptly notified the school of the incident.

“Notified the school what was going on. They were pretty shocked,” he said.

Although it remains unclear how the student possessing the candy got a hold of it, Symonette is determined to take legal action.

“I’m planning on filing legal actions against the school board. Right now, I’m trying to gather as much information as I can gather,” he said.

7News reached out to Miami-Dade County Public Schools for comment and is awaiting a response.

Man describes moments he was shot in Fort Lauderdale armed robbery; subject still on the loose https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/man-describes-moments-he-was-shot-in-fort-lauderdale-armed-robbery-subject-still-on-the-loose/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 21:37:31 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1386161 A man is sharing his story months after he became the victim of an armed robbery in Fort Lauderdale.

Antonio Seymour spoke with 7News about the frightening moments that, police said, unfolded along the 300 block of Northwest 17th Avenue at around 3 p.m. on June 20.

“I’m pretty sure I’m not the first person he did this to. [I’m] damn sure he ain’t the last person he did this to,” said Seymour.

Seymour, who shuttles people to doctor’s appointments, said he was waiting to pick up a client in his Chrysler Pacifica.

“I had two prior clients I just dropped off, so I was going to pick up my third client,” he said.

But Seymour’s work day suddenly took a dangerous turn when, he said, the subject approached him demanding money.

“I had this funny feeling, so I just gazed back to the left, and the guy was standing there with a big gun on me, saying, ‘Give me the money,'” he said.

The victim described the subject as a skinny Black male, between the ages of 20-30, standing at about 6 feet and weighing 150 pounds.

“I’m trying to explain to him, ‘Ain’t no money,'” said the victim.

Still, Seymour said, he handed over his wallet in fear. Despite doing so, he says he was still shot through the car door.

“He shot though the driver’s side door, and he [hit me] on both legs,” said Seymour. “As a result, I got a dead foot. My left foot is dead.”

The subject then fled the area.

In a desperate move for survival, the victim, who suffered gunshot wounds to his thighs, drove himself to Fort Lauderdale Police Headquarters with gunshot wounds to both upper thighs.

“Luckily by the grace of God, I was five – not even five minutes from the police station, so luckily, I was able to drive myself to the police station, and they were able to take care of me from there,” said Seymour.

The man who robbed Seymour, police said, rushed to a nearby liquor store where surveillance cameras recorded him using the victim’s debit card.

“He goes to the liquor store, used my debit card, then he leaves from the liquor store and goes to the chicken place on Sunrise, he goes to Church’s Chicken, and used my card twice at Church’s Chicken,” said Seymour. “Then he went across the street to McDonald’s and used my card two more times there.”

Seymour said that if the man had just asked for money, he gladly would’ve helped.

“If he just would’ve asked me for $5 or $10 or something, I would’ve given it to him because somebody had just blessed me with a $20 tip,” he said.

But because he resorted to violence, leaving Seymour with severe nerve damage to his foot, the victim said the robber needs to be stopped.

“I’m working, though, so if he’s doing this to a working man, he can do this to my mom or my grandma, you know what I’m saying? My daughter or my son, something like that,” he said, “so he needs to be all discreet, though.”

However, Seymour added, he still feels compassion toward his assailant.

“I don’t want to see no harm done to him,” he said.

If you have any information on this shooting or the subject’s whereabouts, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Family returns to court to advocate for teen murder suspect’s transfer to juvenile facility https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/family-returns-to-court-to-advocate-for-teen-murder-suspects-transfer-to-juvenile-facility/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 20:50:09 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1385812 The family of 13-year-old Derek Rosa continues their battle to have him moved from the adult Metro West Detention Center, where he is held as a murder suspect.

During a recent court hearing on Tuesday, emotions ran high as Rosa’s father waved and blew a kiss to his son, while Rosa’s grandmother shed tears.

The teenager stands accused of murdering his mother in her Hialeah apartment on Oct. 12.

Allegedly, Rosa stabbed his mother while she slept next to his newborn half-sister before calling 911 to confess to the crime.

In October, the family pled not guilty on Derek’s behalf, with his father, Jose, advocating for a second chance.

“I guess what we’re asking for is another opportunity – a second chance – to help him grow and become mature as a grown man to put this behind him, and say ‘we have your back,'” said Jose Rosa.

The question of where Derek Rosa should be held has been a subject of legal contention. The judge, who has twice delayed a decision, emphasized the need to determine the suitability of the adult facility for the juvenile.

At Tuesday’s hearing, the judge stated, “What I need to hear is what’s going on in the adult facility. Is it suitable for this particular juvenile?”

Another hearing is scheduled for Friday to decide whether Rosa should be transferred back to juvenile corrections. His murder trial is anticipated to begin in February or March.

Disneyland’s ‘It’s a Small World’ attraction temporarily shut down after man strips on ride https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/disneylands-its-a-small-world-attraction-temporarily-shut-down-after-man-strips-on-ride/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 22:40:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1385467 ANAHEIM, CA. (WSVN) – A man’s strip-down on a popular Disneyland ride led to a shutdown lasting over an hour, with police removing him from the park and subsequently charging him with indecent exposure.

The troubling incident occurred at Disneyland in Anaheim on Sunday afternoon.

According to officials, the unidentified 26-year-old man disrupted the “It’s a Small World” ride by stripping down, prompting a shutdown.

Police were called to the scene and escorted the man out of the park. Authorities suspect he was under the influence of drugs at the time and transported him to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

The man has since been charged with indecent exposure.

The “It’s a Small World” ride resumed normal operation after the disruption was addressed by park officials.

Display in Miami’s Design District vandalized with anti-Israel messages https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/display-in-miamis-design-district-vandalized-with-anti-israel-messages/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 22:03:52 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1385430 An Israeli flag display in Miami’s Design District was the target of vandalism after it was spray-painted and torn down.

The defaced Israeli flag display was near the area of North 38th Street and North Miami Avenue.

The incident was reported to Miami Police over the weekend. 7News cameras captured video of the defacement around noon on Monday.

The person or persons responsible spray-painted “UN-OCCUPY PALESTINE” in black over Israeli flags, which were later torn down.

The flags were replaced with messages condemning the Israeli Defense Forces as terrorists and claiming that American taxes fund genocide.

The targeted display, which features images of kidnapped and missing individuals following recent Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, drew attention from motorists in the area.

“It’s a horrible message because this war is really bad for everyone,” said one passerby.

“It’s disappointing to see this in South Florida where we have a large population that is Jewish,” said another person. “Both sides have a right to express themselves, but it is disappointing to see this.”

It’s unclear when the vandalism occurred.

Miami Police officials reported receiving calls about the incident over the weekend. By Monday afternoon, the defaced messages had been replaced, and the entire display received a fresh coat of white paint by Miami Design District employees.

7News reached out to the Design District office and management via phone and email, but it appears that no one had permission to post or paint on the wall in question.

A Miami Police officer stopped by Monday afternoon, but 7News is waiting to hear back from the police department to know if the incident is being investigated as a crime.

Early Black Friday shopping sets tone for busy holiday weekend https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/early-black-friday-shopping-sets-tone-for-busy-holiday-weekend/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 10:48:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1384569 In the midst of a bustling five-day holiday shopping weekend, eager shoppers kicked off their spree on Thursday night, fueled by the joys of a Thanksgiving feast.

“After they finished eating, they come over to that food off!” shared one shopper.

With a number of items on their shopping lists, ranging from electric toothbrushes to air fryers and TVs, shoppers were united by one common thread—the holiday deals.

“I’m trying to get an electric toothbrush,” said one shopper.

“For spoons. An air fryer. We also bought a TV,” said another shopper.

However, regardless of the items on their lists, the real draw for consumers, according to the National Retail Federation, lies in the unbeatable deals and a sense of tradition.

“It makes me feel fantastic. I know the deals are good, and I look forward to it,” shared a satisfied shopper.

As shoppers readied themselves to spend, expectations loomed for a record-breaking holiday season.

While some left with their sought-after big-ticket items, others took their time to ponder and test products before committing.

Many left with full carts, but above all, full hearts, having spent quality time with family during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Thrifty drivers quickly seized the opportunity, with one fortunate individual filling up with over 17 gallons for less than six dollars.

Word of the pricing glitch spread, leading to a lineup of eager drivers circling the station in hopes of capitalizing on the temporary bargain.

However, the joy was short-lived, as the gas station promptly rectified the mistake. The pricing has now been fixed.

The last time gas was priced at 32 cents per gallon dates back to the year 1964.

Runoff looms for Miami Beach mayoral seat amid controversy https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/runoff-looms-for-miami-beach-mayoral-seat-amid-controversy/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 17:29:17 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383781 After two Miami Beach mayoral candidates failed to secure the necessary threshold for the city’s top job, Tuesday’s decisive runoff election will determine the winner.

Former Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Gongora aims to re-enter local government, while Miami Beach Commissioner Steven Meiner seeks to ascend to the mayoral role.

“I’ve been so focused on residents’ quality of life, law, and order being number one,” Meiner said.

“I wanna re-brand our city as one of arts and culture; I wanna make sure we have the police presence we need,” Gongora said.

The vacancy arose when current mayor Dan Gelber reached his term limit.

In the Nov. 7 election, only 242 votes separated the two candidates, each with multiple endorsements.

Recently, Meiner lost the endorsement of the Miami Herald, withdrawing support due to allegations of unwanted advances reported by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The advancements, according to the Herald, include that he “…allegedly tried to kiss a college-age SEC intern when they went out for dinner,” while another intern claimed, “…while she was at the SEC during law school about a decade ago, Meiner frequently texted her and made comments she saw as inappropriate.”

Meiner, responding to the allegations while campaigning at City Hall on Tuesday, stated, “No. No. No, but I’ve said that publicly, and it’s unfortunate that that’s what we’re dealing with.”

The Miami Herald also withdrew support for Gongora, citing incidents that “paint the picture of someone who seems willing to use his position in ways that harm public trust.”

According to the Herald, Gongora presented official city proclamations at private events, potentially giving the impression of city hall endorsement.

“You know, there are no rules about presenting these types of things,” Gongora said Tuesday. “We thought we were doing a nice thing by honoring businesses and people, but since I have a good record as an elected commissioner, people look for anything they can to try and attack you.”

Despite their differences, both candidates share a common focus on public safety.

“I’m ready to make sure we have more police out in the streets,” said Gongora.

“It’s not only police visibility, which is a big part of it, but it is making sure we prosecute our crimes,” Meiner said.

Polls close at 7 p.m.

The incident unfolded just after 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the area of NW 154th Street and 19th Avenue, where the officers were investigating another case.

The officer was in an unmarked red pickup truck surveilling the suspects in a group of men with guns outside a home. The officers approached and that’s when the men started shooting.

The bullet, bouncing off the officer’s bullet-proof vest, grazed him in the cheek.

“We’re just grateful he was wearing his vest and it helped protect his life,” said MDPD Director Stephanie Daniels.

Following the incident, the suspects fled the scene, prompting an extensive investigation by law enforcement.

In surveillance footage obtained by 7News, the sound of gunshots could be heard. Moments later, in another video, two men could be seen jumping a neighboring fence with a third man running towards the front door of a home.

Several seconds later, an officer could be seen on video searching for the suspects.

Hours after the search for the suspects began, surveillance video showed four men coming out of a home with their hands in the air after the Miami-Dade Special Response Team arrived at the scene.

At least five people were initially detained, including Fernandez and Humes.

The injured officer, who had been transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, was discharged Monday night after receiving medical attention.

Humes has also been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The officer who was shot was treated at the hospital and was released on Monday.
