It felt so good to be out and about after being vaccinated. The mall was hopping with people, and we were excited to check out EST.33 Thai Craft Brewery and Kitchen. The concept is sort of an East meets West situation, and it did not disappoint.

It felt like we ordered everything on the menu. Spiced Crispy Wings ($14) had them, Mushroom Spring Rolls ($10) and Papaya Salad ($12) had that too. Next up, Chicken Pad Thai ($16) Roasted Chicken Green Curry ($28) and Jumbo Shrimp Skewers ($22). We tried to stay within the classic Thai dishes on the menu and then washed them down with a beer flight (we used a car share service, after all). It was a trip to Thailand without ever leaving the 305.

At one point, a thunderstorm rolled through, but we were all good tucked away under the Brickell City Centre roof able to see the rain come down, but just happy to be back in “world” and enjoying a night out.

Salvaje Miami https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/salvaje-miami/ Wed, 05 May 2021 21:30:08 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=912624 Salvaje: translated to English it means wild and in some Latin American countries it’s used to describe something that is terrific. In the case of Midtown Miami’s new rooftop restaurant, Salvaje, it’s both. This Japanese fusion restaurant chain is already crushing the globe with locations in Madrid, Barcelona, Marbella, Ibiza, Panama and Colombia and it’s new location, at Hyde Midtown, is its first spot here in the U.S.

Their focus is to use the best ingredients from all over the world to create their menu. Octopus from Spain, Alaskan King Salmon, Japanese Tuna and grade A Japanese Wagyu beef are some of the items you’ll see on the menu. Salvaje offers sushi as well and an omakase menu.

Eating outdoors in South Florida during the rainy season can be a challenge, but this place is equipped with a retractable roof so that’s not an issue. And if it’s a lounge-y vibe you’re after take a spot on one of Salvaje’s oversized daybeds and catch a sunset. They offer a Sunset Happy Hour with drink specials and a special food menu from 4-6 p.m. every day.

CHICA by Chef Lorena Garcia https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/chica-by-chef-lorena-garcia/ Thu, 01 Apr 2021 21:19:42 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=893351 The Miami restaurant scene … sometimes it’s all style and no substance. You can go somewhere that’s uber fab with a great scene, but the food is, well, meh. So when you come across a spot that delivers on both it’s like finding a pot of restaurant gold.

CHICA by Chef Lorena Garcia is that place. The Miami location is Chef Lorena’s second spot, the first opened in 2017 in Las Vegas to rave reviews. The vibe is high energy with a nightlife feel, but the space is open, so it makes you feel “covid safe” while dining out.

The menu is Latin American inspired featuring a modern spin on classic dishes from Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina to name just a few. We took a little flavor trip with our choices:

  • Lorena’s Arepa Basket
  • Peruvian Corvina Ceviche
  • Pork Belly Tacos
  • Crispy Peruvian Whole Fried Red Snapper

CHICA opened with a bang in late 2019 but, like everything else, was forced to close because of covid. Now Chef Lorena is back and better than ever giving Miami some of it’s favorite dishes with a little extra glam.

Serena https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/serena/ Wed, 17 Mar 2021 21:30:31 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=884487 Who loves a good rooftop vibe?! EVERYBODY!!!!! I mean, what’s not to love? City views and nice breezes make for a good time had by all. Now, throw in some good food and drinks, and that’s a winning combination. Lucky for us the team behind Coyo Taco just launched their sexy new rooftop restaurant and lounge at the brand new Moxy South Beach.

The menu features some of your Mexican favorites given a modern twist by Chef Scott Lindquist. We started with some guacamole. I mean, how can you not? Fresh and so tasty cuz the avocados are mashed to order and served with house made salsas, of all spice levels, and warm chips.

Agua Chiles, the traditional Mexican ceviche (diver scallops $18, cobia $17, shrimp $18) came next followed by the Oysters Serena ($18) baked with creamed spinach, garlic jalapeno and cilantro butter with some crunchy crushed tortilla chips on top. Everyone at our table raved about the Seared Tuna Tostada with avocado mousse ($21) and the Enchiladas con Pollo ($24)– maybe it’s because the tortillas here are hand pressed and made fresh daily from ground cornmeal.

Serena is open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m., so get here soon cuz this roof is on fire.

Osteria Morini https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/osteria-morini/ Wed, 03 Mar 2021 22:30:48 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=875333 New Yorkers! They’re everywhere and now they’re bringing their restaurants with them. The New York restaurant team behind Michelin-starred Marea and Ai Fiori just opened Osteria Morini inside the new Kimpton Palomar South Beach. The Italian eatery promises a Soho vibe on SoBe without the snow, only lots of outdoor dining along the Collins Canal.

We stopped in to give it a try and were dazzled by some of Osteria Morini’s menu items. Their charcuterie board (Batillardo $12, $35 or $45, depending on what you choose) is like none we’ve ever seen. It’s loaded with cured sliced meats and cheeses and spreads so loaded we should’ve stopped there with a glass of wine, but we didn’t (of course!).

Our waiter suggested the squid ink pasta (Torcia Nera $27) and wild mushroom rigatoni ($27) both were to die for. The Romana salad ($16), Morini’s version of a Caesar, is another must try and so is the Brodetto ($42) a seafood dish comprised of fish, clams, prawns and fennel in a tomato broth.

Morini is only open for dinner, for now. Lunch and brunch are planned for later this spring to which I say, hurry up, and make it happen.

I grew up in the City of Progress/Strip Shopping Centers, so imagine my surprise when I parked at one said shopping center and walked into a sandwich shop that felt more like I was in Wynwood or South Beach than Hialeah. Pan.com Sandwicheria is that place.

The menu features some Cuban classics with a twist like the “Super Frita” ($9), a double frita sandwich with gouda, bacon and onion jam topped with a fried egg, crispy potatoes and served on a brioche bun. The “Reubencito” ($9) is a classic corned beef Reuben sandwich, only this one comes with fried pork chunks. The “Lechon Americano” ($8) is the pork sandwich you’ve come to know and love topped with guava BBQ sauce, avocado and arugula. Cuban Hummus ($5.50) made from chickpeas, chorizo, green plantains and scallions are on the appetizer list, and they make a mean “Medio Dia Croquette” ($4.50) served with a mustard sauce.

The menu is muy rico!

The Deck at Island Gardens https://wsvn.com/entertainment/the-deck-at-island-gardens/ Wed, 04 Dec 2019 22:29:27 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=560541 Miami. The Magic City. I don’t think there’s too many places where it looks more magical than The Deck at Island Gardens. Tucked away behind the Miami Children’s Museum on the MacArthur Causeway, the waterfront restaurant offers amazing views of the city and the mega yachts docked at it’s adjacent marina.

Now under new management, The Deck got a recent overhaul courtesy of Executive Chef Alfio Longo, who’s trained in a number of Michelin starred restaurants. The menu features fresh seafood starters, salads and delicious thin crust pizzas from their brick oven.

There are large plates prepared table-side meant to be shared. And when I say meant to be shared I’m talking at least 4 people. We had the Oven Baked Salt Crusted Branzino served with yukon gold potatoes, baby carrots, onions, and capers tossed in a lemon olive oil.

A Roasted Rack of Lamb served with a mushroom, spinach and barley risotto is another table-side option. If you’re in the mood for steak, the 8-ounce Filet Mignon is the way to go. It’s served with mashed potatoes and roasted carrots in a red wine reduction.

A few classic pasta dishes (sweet pea risotto, spaghetti vongole, pesto pasta) round out the new and improved menu. Sundays, the party starts with a $65 per person all you can eat brunch that includes a welcome Bellini or Mimosa. Then the scene gets turned up Ibiza-Style as the sun sets, and on Thursday nights the “Forget Me Not” party allows guests to come for dinner then stay for the party under the stars when the DJ heats things up.

It’s an only-in-Miami kind of party with Miami itself serving as the star of the show.

Mama Joon https://wsvn.com/entertainment/mama-joon/ Wed, 20 Nov 2019 23:25:08 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=555620 Don’t you love it when you go out to dinner to try a new restaurant and everything you taste just blows you away? I do! It just happened recently when the “Hubs” and I went to Mama Joon. It wasn’t easy to find. Even our ride share driver’s GPS got it wrong (damn you construction!) but once we found it we were so happy we did.

This little gem is located inside the Life House Collins Park Hotel on Miami Beach. It’s just behind the hotel lobby in a beautiful atrium style room (hiiiiiigh ceilings) with seating outside as well as on their patio. The menu is pretty simple: Mediterranean home style dishes with Lebanese, Greek and some Southern Italian influences.

The dishes at Mama Joon are meant to be shared. We started with “Mama’s Mezze” – a sampler of favorite dips and dishes including house-made marinated feta, babaganoush, falafal, tabouli and, my favorite, fried chickpeas. It’s served with manousheh a crispy, chewy flatbread topped and baked with za’atar, an aromatic spice blend.

I could’ve gone home happy after Mama’s Mezze, but the hits kept on coming. We moved on to a crispy fresh Beet Salad, a hearty Roasted Cauliflower and Halloumi cheese served on an avocado flatbread. And even though at this point I was full I couldn’t walk away from the last 2 dishes: Za’atar Spiced Chicken and Grilled Lamb Chops. The dishes on the menu range from $14 to $32.

Some of the Mama Joon recipes are family favorite’s from the hotel’s owner. Executive Chef Harry Capacetti has added his own personal touch and the result is a magical menu served in a warm, friendly space. All I can say is Mama would be proud.

Chug’s Diner https://wsvn.com/entertainment/chugs-diner/ Wed, 30 Oct 2019 21:53:49 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=547375 Want a breakfast sandwich at 3 p.m.? Need a middle of the day snack? If you’re in Coconut Grove, you’re in luck. Chug’s Diner takes some Cuban classics and gives them somewhat of a gourmet makeover. The foodie upgrade is thanks to Chef Michael Beltran, chef/owner of the finer dining spot, Ariete, about a block away from Chug’s.

Order at the counter and the friendly wait staff will bring your order to your table inside or outside in the courtyard. The hardest part of ordering is staring at all the fresh pastries at the counter just waiting to end up in your belly. LOL.

Order a “Completa” with 3 eggs, Cuban toast and breakfast potatoes ($7.99) or the Scramble Sandwich served on Cuban bread with Gouda cheese ($6.49). I had Scramble Sandwich a few weeks ago when I skipped breakfast and was still craving something “eggy” at 2 p.m. Apparently, my mom was too, cuz she ordered the Breakfast Sandwich on Cuban bread with ham and a fried egg topped with crispy potatoes ($7.49).

If you’re not feeling breakfast at 2 p.m. and need lunch, there’s plenty of salads to choose from, ranging from a simple Mixed Green ($7.99) to a fancier Buratta and Avocado salad served with grilled bread ($15). On the heartier side there’s lots of sandwiches to choose from ($5.99 – $17.99) and full on meals on the “Abuela’s Plates” menu served with white rice, black beans and your choice of protein.

Keep on chugging along, Chug’s.

Gregory’s Diner https://wsvn.com/entertainment/gregorys-diner/ Fri, 25 Oct 2019 17:16:42 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=545308 They are the power couple behind Miami’s beloved Mandolin Aegean Bistro, and now Anastasia Koutsioukis and Ahmet Erkaya are at it again. The pair just opened Gregory’s Diner, an homage to Anastasia’s Greek grandparents: Gregory and Maria. The couple opened their own diner in St. Louis after emigrating from Greece and kept it going for 35 years.

Gregory’s offers an all day menu of some old school diner classics with a modern spin. On a recent visit we had the Grand Crudite with black bean dip ($12) a beautiful prawn cocktail appetizer ($20) and two delicious pastas. One was a rigatoni with meat sauce ($16) the other a delicious creamy pasta special made with walnuts.

Right now they’re open for lunch, dinner and brunch on the weekends. They serve some breakfast items all day, but by December they hope to have a full, all-day breakfast menu.

Gregory’s is inside the historic Vagabond Hotel in the city’s up and coming Mimo District on Biscayne Boulevard. Three other eateries have opened here in the past four years without much success. Let’s hope Gregory’s Diner, like Anastasia’s grandparents, is open here for the next 35 years too.

Boia De https://wsvn.com/entertainment/boia-de/ Wed, 16 Oct 2019 21:33:31 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=541428 It’s called “Boia De.” Loosely translated this Italian phrase means “Oh My” in English. And after our recent visit the phrase works for this restaurant in all the right ways. Boia De is a tiny little restaurant (24 seats) in a strip shopping center near Miami’s Buena Vista neighborhood. There’s no sign, only a neon exclamation point over the door to identify it. But once you order and start eating: WOW.

We ordered a few goodies and shared. It started with the Lettuces (not a typo) salad ($13) a beautiful mixed greens salad tossed with green goddess dressing and topped with crispy shallots. The Tagliolini Nero ($24) pasta came next. Our waitress recommended this thin long pasta served cold tossed with king crab and truffle oil. I thought to myself “cold pasta, that’s weird?” but boy was I wrong. I’m sorry I shared with the hubby and didn’t order my own LOL Grilled Broccolini ($14) tossed in a homemade ranch dressing followed as did the Cannelini Beans ($14) served in a Parmesan broth with littleneck clams and a perfectly toasted piece of bread for dipping. A perfectly executed Ricotta Gnocchi ($17) in a cherry tomato pomodoro sauce wrapped things up for us. I’m not a big gnocchi fan, but this one may have turned that around for me.

To be honest, everything on the menu looked so good it was hard to decide what to order without over-ordering. The couple in the kitchen, Luciana Giangrandi and Alex Meyer, have quite the culinary pedigree between them. The pair is a force to be reckoned with so make a reservation (only 24 seats, remember) and prepare to be wowed.

Papi Steak https://wsvn.com/entertainment/papi-steak/ Wed, 09 Oct 2019 21:21:58 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=535832 Take two guys named David, a steak dish, a celebrity following and a South Beach location and you’ve got the hottest new steakhouse in the 305. The “Davids” Grutman and Einhorn, the latter AKA “Papi,” have teamed up to open Papi Steak in Miami Beach’s South of Fifth neighborhood.

Einhorn, who grew up kosher, actually created the “Papi Steak” at Komodo, Grutman’s Brickell restaurant. But the dish was so popular they decided to join forces. Yes, you can find the traditional Filet Mignons and NY Strips on the menu at Papi Steak, but the 32 ounce Glatt Kosher Ribeye is the star of the show here.

The Wagyu Pastrami appetizer is another winning menu item along with the traditional Latkes served with house made apple sauce.

If you’ve got non-beef eaters in your party there’s a Jumbo Prawn, Dover Sole, Grilled Branzino and Maine Lobster, to name just a few, that’ll keep them happy.

And of course expect plenty of steakhouse sides on the menu: whipped potatoes, roasted mushrooms, cornbread, mac and cheese … you get the picture.

And speaking of pictures don’t be surprised if you run into the paparazzi on the way out. J Lo, Drake and DJ Khaled are among Papi Steak’s celeb fans. You never know who you might see at this hot spot but you won’t leave hungry, that’s for sure.

El Santo Miami https://wsvn.com/entertainment/el-santo-miami/ Wed, 02 Oct 2019 19:25:33 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=534720 Good food and a totally Instagrammable space. What could be better? El Santo Miami is the latest and greatest restaurant/lounge to hit up Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. The space is actually three different spots. One’s a more casual taqueria, then there’s a more formal dining room and lounge, and finally a secret cocktail lounge called Don Diablo so now you can do more than dance salsa when you’re on Calle Ocho

The taqueria celebrates Mexican Lucha Libre culture while the decor in the dining room gives off old church vibes. The Don Diablo lounge sets the party mood with Dia de los Muertos skeletons and skulls decor complete with a wood coffin DJ booth. We didn’t stay at El Santo long enough to party but we did try some really tasty menu items.

Our meal started on the menu’s Crudo section ($12.95 – $14.95)

We had the Corvina Tiradito: Sashimi style Corvina with ají amarillo Leche de Tigre and ají amarillo aioli $12.95

The Mini Tacos are not to be missed. They’re made with crispy gyoza skins.

Pick your favorite filling:
Corvina $8
Tuna $9
Lobster $12 (winner!)
Waygu Beef $13
Salmon $7

We wrapped things up with the Organic Arroz con Pollo entree ($32). Not at all like the Arroz con Pollo I’ve been eating my whole life but quite the delicious surprise.

We weren’t able to stick around to dance our guac off at the Don Diablo lounge, but there’s always next time.

Now our ever growing food scene has gotten another Indian restaurant and this one comes with a top chef. Executive Chef Hemant Mathur is at the helm at Maska, in Miami’s Midtown neighborhood, and he’s a big deal. He’s the first Indian Chef in the U.S. to be awarded a Michelin star.

The space is beautiful. It’s modern and plush with a full bar and specialized cocktail menu. You can expect some traditional Indian dishes and some fresh takes on the classics. We loved the Lasoobi Gobi (crispy cauliflower in garlic sauce), the Tandoori chicken (made in the clay Tandoor oven) and the Maska chicken (butter chicken). Most of the dishes come with butter Naan bread for sopping up all the saucy goodness.

Small plates $9-16
Tandoor $12-$24
Large plates $18-$32

If you’re tired of the same old same old go Indian and give your taste buds a tour of some good stuff.

Love Greek culture. I’m in love with a Greek. My fiance’ is half Greek. So whenever we get the chance to try a new Mediterranean restaurant in town count us in!

Meraki Greek Bistro, in the heart of downtown Miami, did not disappoint. The thing is if you blink you might miss it. It’s tucked away down an alley and behind a building. But once you turn the corner you’re transported to a lovely “taverna” style patio and some hella’ good food.

We had some of the classics:
Dolmades – stuffed grape leaves
Homemade Greek meatballs – grilled to perfection
Traditional Greek salad – don’t be fooled authentic Greek salads don’t have any lettuce only tomato, onion, cucumber, olives, capers, green peppers, feta cheese, and herbs
med feta
Marinated grileld octopus – drizled with extra virgin olive oil, lemon & oregano
Lamb Gyro platter – we shared with another couple and it was perfect

Appetizers $4.99 – $12.99
Salads $9.49 – $11.99
Entrees $11.99 – $18.99
Gyro Bar $6.49 – $6.99

Meraki Greek Bistro is the real deal. Once you find it, you will be back 🙂

Salumeria 104 https://wsvn.com/entertainment/salumeria-104/ Wed, 08 Aug 2018 21:23:51 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=404447 Oh, pasta … How I love to hate you. I blame you for my muffin top but I love you in the moment when I’m savoring every carby, saucy bite of you. But eating in moderation is the key to staying healthy right? So I say if you’re gonna go for the pasta make it worth your while. Do it right at Salumeria 104. The popular Italian eatery now has a second location in Coral Gables. A salumeria is sort of like an Italian deli. A small shop that specializes in cold cuts of cured meats and cheeses. Salumeria 104 offers salumi and so much more.

On a recent visit we started with one of their signature meat and cheese boards and then tried some of their most popular dishes.

Burratina: fried green tomatoes with aged balsamic vinegar $14
Tagliatelle Bolognese: house made tagliatelle with home made bolognese – a house favorite $16

Planta https://wsvn.com/entertainment/planta/ Wed, 25 Jul 2018 21:43:39 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=400798

Truth: I’m not the biggest fan of vegetarian restaurants. I usually leave feeling like the texture of all the food is just wrong and I’m hungry 30 minutes after the check is paid. When I heard about Planta, a new South Beach spot, that opened recently I didn’t even think I wanted to go but I gave it a shot and, boy oh boy, am I glad I did.

We tried so many things on that menu and everything was delicious. Yes, they make sushi from carrots and a ceviche like crudo from coconut instead of fish but the flavors are soooooo on point and the texture of the food tastes just as if you were eating the real thing.

Planta you’re firmly planted in my taste buds and I hope to be back.

Skorpios Midtown Miami https://wsvn.com/entertainment/skorpios-midtown-miami/ Wed, 28 Mar 2018 22:16:09 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=353583 OPA!!! When a new Greek spot opened in Midtown, I knew I had to give it a try, and who better to bring than my Greek boyfriend. He’s a tough critic, but Skorpios passed his test (and mine). The food is authentic and so is the space. They made it look like a little seaside restaurant you might find in Mykonos sprinkled with a little Miami chic, of course.

We tried some Greek classics including:

  • Greek Salad with vine ripe tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil and barrel-aged feta $14
  • Dolmades grape leaves with rice, tomato, fennel and pine nuts $9
  • Chicken Souvlaki $18
  • Hummus with Oven Baked Lamb $14
  • Grilled Langoustines with olive oil and lemon $26
  • Octapothy Skorpios 1 pound grilled whole octopus $22

Appetizers/Salads $9 – $22
Flatbreads/Mains $12 – $45
Desserts $10

The food, the space, the music all set the tone for what will be a tasty night of Greek favorites all brought to you courtesty of Eric Milon (one of South Beach’s original Club Kings) and his team. They really know how to set the mood for a great vibe paired up with some good Greek!

But in the case of the new Carillon Miami Wellness Resort they’ve done a pretty good job of getting in the hit column. The Strand Bar and Grill is the hotel’s signature restaurant. It’s a beautiful space part of the Carillon’s multi-million dollar renovation. The cuisine seasonally inspired with Executive Chef Stephen Ullrich running the show. We sampled a few signature dishes.

  • Beet Bucatini with arugula pesto, whipped ricotta and Parmesan
  • Polenta Agnolotti with short rib, kale, and pickled pearl onion
  • Lamb Trio with smoked yogurt, za’atar, confit tomato and cucumber gremolata
  • Sea Scallops with artichoke, brussel sprouts, black truffle and pomegranate

Starters $15- $28
Pastas $19- $25
Entrees $29- $45

Located right on the sand on Miami Beach the Carillon Miami Wellness Resort offers a spa and beach club membership. The beautifully renovated property just turned 60. We can only hope we’ll look as good at that age.

And now Chef Michael Schwartz is doing it again. His new restaurant, Amara at Paraiso, overlooking Biscayne Bay is the perfect backdrop for the award winning chef’s delicious dishes. The James Beard winner focuses on coastal ingredients and Latin American flavors to create the menu here and now, if you can believe it, things just got better.

Amara just started their Sunday Brunch service. You can enjoy brunchy favorites from the restaurant’s a la carte menu OR enjoy table-side dishes from food carts. One cart features sweet dishes like arroz con leche and guava toast. The other savory favorites like skirt or rib eye grilled steak, plantain tortilla or tiradito. Think of it as dim sum a la Chef Schwartz.

Yay is all we can say!

A secret about a hidden little gem that oozes charm and elegance AND offers good food. It’s called Cafe Roval, once a pump house delivering water to the nearby Miami neighborhoods it’s surrounded by, now a quaint indoor outdoor restaurant with lush gardens, a waterfall and a pond.

The menu has a Mediterranean flare and on a recent visit we had:

Lamb Meatballs with whipped ricotta
Grilled Octopus served with a bean salad
Beets with Arugula dusted with chopped pistachios
Rigatoni Bolognese made with pork, beef and veal
Sea Scallops with lentils and fried herbs
Yellowtail Snapper with farro and tahini dressing
Prices: $10-$19 appetizers, $22-$38 entrees, $9-$10 desserts

The food is tasty and the setting makes you forget the hustle and bustle of the city is just beyond the beautiful limestone building where you’re sitting. This is one secret that’s OK to share.

Prime Fish https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/prime-fish/ Tue, 04 Jul 2017 21:35:26 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=243220 Brunch: it does a body good. And if you love an all you can eat situation there’s none better than the spread at Prime Fish. Savory, sweet, breakfast, lunch, hot and cold they’ve thought of everything. But it’s not sooooo much that you’re overwhelmed and don’t know where or how to begin. In addition, the Bloody Marys, mimosas and bellinis are bottomless I mean what’s not to love?

Salads, French Toast, Kobe Beef Sliders, Chicken and Waffles, an omelette and carving station, biscuits, bagels it goes on and on and I kept going back for more and more. If this sounds like too much you can always order something yummy from the a la carte menu.

Don’t forget to save room for some dessert. Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union did. They were there when we were there on a recent Sunday afternoon. Great food for a great price and a free celebrity sighting. That’s my kinda brunch!

Octopus – another staple on any Greek menu, also a must have ($18)
Keftedakia – Greek style meatballs ($16)

Ella’s Oyster Bar https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/ellas-oyster-bar/ Wed, 31 May 2017 21:53:55 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=234069 Calle Ocho: It’s not what it used to be. The land of the walk up Cuban window where you can get a cafecito and a croquetta is now sharing sidewalk space with some trendy new restaurants and bars and Ella’s Oyster Bar is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Co-owned by China Grill alum, Jordan Marano and Christian Plotczyk, it’s named after Christian’s daughters Gabriella and Isabella. Cute, right?  You know what else is cute? The space itself and the food doesn’t disappoint.

Oysters (duh!) – fresh daily east coast and west coast selections

Tuna Taquitos – homage to Calle Ocho the taco toppings include chicharrones

Little Havana Clam Bake – says it’s for 2 but 4 can share the mussels, lobster, clams and veggies in this pot of seafood goodness

Oysters Rockefeller – can’t have an oyster restaurant without serving this classic

Heirloom Tomato Salad – cool compliment to the clam bake

Coconut Milk Cherry Rice – creamy rice served in a coconut, thank goodness our waitress suggested it or we would have missed out on this

And if you’re not in the mood for seafood Ella’s offers Fried Chicken and pancakes and Roasted Bone-in Short Rib on the menu.

We skipped dessert because I had to drive my boyfriend to the airport, but we hope to stop in again. Hopefully, next time we can still get a table at this soon to be Calle Ocho hot spot.

You eat it cuz you’re there and really it’s order from the menu or starve. Thanks to The Anderson, great bar drinks and great bar food now go hand in hand.

Mix and match empanadas with Chef’s Herb Aioli ($10)
The Anderson Slider – perfect size for late night munchies ($4)
Griot & Tostones – crispy pork and tostones with spicy pickled veggies ($11)
And last but not least the famous Anderson Fried Chicken Sandwich ($14)

Wash this down with some of their new cocktail offerings and you’re good to go without breaking the bank. Or skip the booze and just go for a late-night food run. They’re open until 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Good booze, good food, great times at The Anderson.

Sure they’ve got all your Cuban favorites like said Croquettas (ham and chicken), Arroz con Pollo, Chicken Vaca Frita (my fave dish on the menu) , Lechon Asado, Palomilla Steak and Masitas de Puerco (fried pork).  But Executive Chef Odell Torres’ menu also features some new dishes with a Cuban twist like the Lechon Flatbread, Crispy Moros Roasted Pork, Bacon Wrapped Maduros and Cuban Picadillo Cannelloni Pasta.  It’s like a flavor mash up in your mouth.

There’s an outdoor bar and live music several nights a week.  It’s a great place for a party.  Matter of fact Emilio celebrated his birthday on opening night.  And now the Miami Design District has reason to celebrate too.

Upland (his 5th South Florida restaurant) left me wondering “how soon can I come back?” Starr may be the concept guy but his Chef Justin Smillie simply slays every item on the menu. Fresh pastas, amazing thin crust pizzas, beef, fish, vegetable side dishes … I can’t. I just can’t!

upland-miami-1

Here’s what we had (Don’t judge there were 4 of us LOL):

  • Pistachio pizza with fontina and stracciatella.  Crispy and amazing ($19)
  • Little gem salad with avocado, cucumber, ricotta and a walnut vinaigrette.  It’s called “Little Gem” for a reason ($18)
  • Seared octopus with cilantro avocado pesto ($25)
  • Crispy duck wings ($19)
  • Bucatini cacio e pepe – my new favorite version of this dish ($19)
  • Estrella chicken liver pasta with sherry, rosemary and sage.  I know what you’re thinking “chicken liver”?!  Rethink it.  Dee-lish ($21)
  • Fusilli with maine lobster, fire roasted tomato, almond butter and basil ($31)
  • Whole smoked roast branzino for two fennel with leek vinaigrette and meyer lemon ($72)
  • Tuscan-style melt in your mouth lamb chops with coal roasted eggplant, confit tomatoes, crispy chickpeas and mint ($38)
  • Coal roasted short rib for two, hands down the best short rib I’ve ever had! ($78)

OLLA is the real deal when it comes to South of the Border dining. No tacos and quesadillas here. You’ll find only authentic regional Mexican dishes on this menu whipped up by Chef Scott Linquist. The word OLLA translates to a ceramic jar that’s used for cooking and some dishes here come in an “olla” served family style for all to share.

olla2

Here’s what we had:

  • Ahumado – hot smoked salmon, boiled egg and a green chile tomatillo sauce ($10)
  • Caesar – not very Mexican but it’s served with Tijuana style dressing, white anchovies, croutons and a Mexican style cheese instead of parmesan ($12)
  • Pollo Enchilada – chicken covered in salsa verde, and topped with a gooey delish Mexican cheese ($12)
  • Coloradito – duck breast in a sour cherry salsa, roasted peanuts and homemade mole served with warm tortillas

Bazaar Mar by Jose Andres https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/bazaar-mar-by-jose-andres/ Wed, 21 Dec 2016 22:24:24 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=194127 Happy Holidays!!! There’s a gift waiting for you at the new SLS Hotel in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood. Super Chef Jose Andres built it just for you. It’s his new restaurant concept Bazaar Mar. It’s all about seafood here but in typical Jose Andres fashion the dishes are anything but typical.

Here’s some of what we tried:

img_0165

  • California Funnel Cake – the “cake” is made from seaweed topped with avocado, blue crab, salmon roe, mayo, cucumber $13
  • Po Boy José! – fried baby squid in a perfectly fluffy brioche bun $12
  • Ora King Salmon from New Zealand $24
  • Sea Urchin Cone $13
  • Cobia Ceviche – it’s in the shape of a rose almost too beautiful to eat, but I ate it! $26
  • Bagel & Lox – not what you’re thinking: smoked salmon on air bread stuffed with cream cheese. oh, and it comes in the shape of a little fish $12
  • Croquetas de bacalao – spanish codfish fritters $12
  • Maine Lobster Croquetas – made with lobster and shrimp $16
  • Marinated ‘Ferran Adrià’ Liquid Olives – an olive like you’ve never had and will never have again. Magic in your mouth $18

Miami we must of been really nice this year cuz this is Chef Jose Andres’ second South Florida restaurant. And this is the gift that keeps on giving.

Fi’lia https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/filia/ Wed, 23 Nov 2016 22:38:05 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=187154 I’m not gonna lie. I’m not a fan of Miami’s Brickell neighborhood. Not because there aren’t lots of great places to eat, drink and be merry but because it’s such a headache. Too much construction, not enough parking, and too many cars equals way more congestion than I care to deal with (yes, I know I sound like an old lady right about now). But Chef Michael Schwartz has given me reason to stop my “Brickell Bitching” by way of Fi’lia, his new Italian eatery at the SLS Brickell.

img_9069

The highlights include:
Tableside Caesar salad $20 prepared old school right next to you with croutons toasted right on the cart Sam’s Chicken Parm $23, don’t know who “Sam” is but thank you Sam Meatballs $15 who doesn’t love a good meatball Wild Mushroom Pizza $18 thin, crispy perfection made in Fi’lia’s wood burning oven

Fi’lia is Schwartz’s 6th Miami restaurant so obviously the James Beard award-winning chef must be doing something right. Fi’lia I’m feelin’ ya!

The Italian gem La Moderna gave their menu a little face lift and they’re back better than ever.

img_8802

Some of the new menu items include:
Crudo Grand platter ($24) 3 different tartares served with crusty bread Turbot in Crosta ($32) almond and lime crusted turbot (European flatfish) with mozzarella and roasted mushrooms La Fiorentina ($48) a 19 ounce, 28 day dried t-bone steak definetly meant to be shared Risotto ($24) with sauteed shrimp, burrata and arugula pesto sauce.

Phuc Yea https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/phuc-yea/ Wed, 19 Oct 2016 20:43:07 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=177247 It started as pop-up in a hallway at an office building in downtown Miami a few years ago and boy did Phuc Yea make an impression. And not just because of the name (pronounced fook, which means blessings and prosperity in Vietnamese) but because they were doing food like nobody else in town. Now we’re impressed again with news of the restaurant’s permanent location in Miami’s Mimo neighborhood.

img_8597

The menu is “Viet-Cajun”. I’m still not clear on what that is exactly but what is clear is that everything we had was delicious! The noodles and rolls are great. Our fave, the PY Noodles ($10) in garlic butter, oyster sauce and Parmesan cheese. Don’t know how something so simple can taste so good. Main dish offerings include seafood, curries, tofu, and crispy duck to name just a few but the star of the show has to be the Cajun Wok. It’s a Cajun boil style pot with veggies and sausage tossed with the protein and sauce of your choice.

img_8116

The restaurant, located within the Shops at Merrick Park, offers, what Chef Juan Aguero, calls a Latin-Asian fusion menu.  Some signature dishes include Skirt Steak Croquettes ($10), Vaca Frita Buns ($13), a charred marinated octopus Pulpo 320 ($16)  and the Braised Short Rib ($33) that falls right off the bone.

There’s a main dining room, a lounge for late night nosh and an outdoor patio for when the weather cools down.  The band keeps it hot while the chef keeps it tasty.

Tanuki https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/tanuki/ Wed, 21 Sep 2016 21:28:26 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=168262 Look!  Up in the sky!  It’s a bird.  It’s a plane. It’s NOT Superman.  It’s a Tanuki, a Japanese raccoon dog, and it’s not up in the sky it’s in the middle of the dining room at Tanuki. The new South Beach eatery just opened featuring some Asian favorites.

img_8083

Sushi, Sashimi, Specialty rolls, Entrees like Black Cod and Peking Duck.  They’ve got it all.  We started with some crispy Spicy Shrimp ($15) in chili ailoi, a Daikani salad ($9) with crab, oranges, and greens in a citrus vinaigrette.  Our Marinated Black Cod ($20) and Sichuan Style Beef ($15) perfect for sharing.

Ran out of room for dessert but Tanuki is open til 2 a.m. so next time I’m in the mood for a late night Mochi I know just where to go.

If that’s the decision you’re up against ohhhhhh, how I envy you! That can only mean you’re at Halves & Wholes, the new amaze-balls sandwich shop that recently opened on Miami Beach.

img_7589

Chef Bernie Matz is crushing it with a creative and yummy list of sandwiches that will keep you coming back again and again. On a recent visit I feel like I had one bite of almost all of them LOL. My fave had to be the Eggplant Croqueta. If I didn’t know any better I’d think I was eating an actual croqueta instead of fried eggplant. The short rib Stack sandwich and turkey Superbird came in a close 2nd and 3rd. But what else would we expect from Chef Bernie and the Menin Hospitality group. The same bunch who brought us Bodega Taqueria y Tequila which happens to be right across the street.

img_7585

Halves and Wholes offers some great salad options too. I’ll have to go back and try those next time.

Pao https://wsvn.com/entertainment/pao/ Wed, 07 Sep 2016 21:30:02 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=161959 Unicorns! They do exist! They exist inside Pao by Paul Qui’s beautiful dining room at the uber hip Faena Hotel on Miami Beach. The Top Chef Champ and James Beard award winner really gets it right with his take on Modern Asian cuisine.

IMG_7701

The menu at Pao is broken down into several sections: crudos, small plates, charcoal grilled meats and vegetables, rices and big sharing plates. If you go I recommend you share everything with everyone in your party so you can all sample some of Chef Paul’s genius. He draws on his native Filipino food influences along with Spanish, Japanese and French cuisine creating his one unique menu that includes unicorn! One of his signature dishes the “Unicorn” is uni (sea urchin) in a roasted corn pudding (uni\corn get it!) served in a spiky sea urchin shell. The dish pays homage to the $6 million Damien Hirst gold leaf unicorn statue that watches over the glamorous dining room. Our waiter says it’s the most photographed dish on the menu!

IMG_7700

Pao is a little decadent, yes. But if you’re a foodie this place is NOT TO BE MISSED.

P.S. If you do go to Pao check out Faena’s C’est Rouge cabaret show after dinner. It’s a great way to cap off your fantasy meal.

Ariete https://wsvn.com/entertainment/belkys-bite-blog/ariete/ Wed, 31 Aug 2016 21:30:20 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=158221 I’m not gonna lie. I don’t go to Coconut Grove too much. When I was in high school I used to hang out there all the time. Those were the “Pre-South Beach” days and the Grove was “the” then place to be. But that was 30 years ago and now I live on the beach so needless to say I try to avoid U.S. 1 at all costs! But now there’s a good reason to head South. That reason is Ariete!

IMG_7549

Their website says Ariete “offers innovative cuisine in a new-American-meets-New-World way.” That’s website speak for Chef Michael Beltran’s ability to make everything taste soooooo gooooooood! We stopped in for brunch and had Eggs Benedict ($16) on a Gruyere cheese biscuit topped with a Cuban style frita with hollandaise and homemade frita “papitas.” The Carrot Cake Waffles ($12) with cream cheese, cinnamon sugar, and spiced currant syrup were TO DIE and the traditional Bagel & Lox platter ($15) gets a twist with “pastrami” made from salmon and a bagel made with squid ink. Pastry Chef Dallas Wynne takes doughnuts ($7) to the next level with ingredients like sour orange and wood grilled pineapple marmalade. The doughnut offering changes from time to time but just do yourself a flavor and order one.

Ariete is open for dinner and brunch on Saturday AND Sunday. I drive an Audi so when you see me on U.S. 1 headed towards Coconut Grove now you know where I’m headed. Honk your horn and just wave 🙂

Portland, Oregon https://wsvn.com/entertainment/portland-oregon/ Thu, 18 Aug 2016 01:50:45 +0000 http://wsvn.com/?p=148577 Keep Portland Weird. That’s the slogan seen throughout this great city in the Pacific Northwest. But Portland isn’t weird. It’s cool, eclectic, original, a live-and-let-live kind of place, and that’s what the slogan is really about. It’s about supporting local businesses that make Portland, Oregon stand out from other U.S. cities.

160817_Belkys_blog_2

I was just there, surprised my cousin for his 50th birthday, and the only “weird” thing I found about the city is that nobody honks their horns in Portland LOL. It’s not weird It’s pretty damn great, and it’s becoming one of America’s great food cities. I hit up some pretty cool spots during my visit. Here is my list in no particular order:

Departure – Cool rooftop, great food.

Imperial – Best fried chicken ever from one of Portland’s best chefs.

Voodoo Doughnut – There’s a reason why there’s always a line outside.

Screen Door – A one-hour wait for brunch, and well worth it.

Clyde Common – Farm to table at its best.

Urban Farmer – Simple, straightforward Northwest sustainable ingredients.

Doug Fir – It’s like eating in a cool log cabin.

Pepe Le Moko – Uber cool bar with the best bar snacks.

Tear Drop – Classic cocktails with a twist.

Huber’s Cafe – The city’s oldest restaurant, make it your late night stop for a Spanish coffee.

Thanks for giving me an excuse to visit cousin Alex. And thanks for keeping it weird, Portland!

This little Miami Beach treasure, run by a husband and wife team, pumps out fresh pasta every day. Tagliatelle, ravioli, and gnocchi perfection. Prosciutto di parma, pear, pumpkin, pork, lamb and truffle oil combined to perfection to create delicately delicious fillings.
